Role of Botanicals in the Prevention of Cancer

  • Many cultures have traditions that encompass the use of herbs, spices, and other plants for medicinal purposes. From the ancient past to the present medicinal knowledge has been passed down to new generations in the form of shamans, medicine men, healers, and the like. In the past decade there has been a surge of scientific interest in complementary and alternative medicine, much of which has its origins in traditional medicine. It has been recognized for some time that dietary patterns and content affect cancer risk. Epidemiological studies have strongly suggested that the fruit and vegetable content of the diet associates with reduced risk for colon, lung, prostate, and other cancers. Many different types of cellular mechanisms have been postulated by which compounds in botanicals can prevent cancer. Mechanisms particular to the prevention of colon cancer will be addressed in this review.

The Specification of Science Education Programs in the Local Public Library: Focusing on the Programs In G-city

  • The city of 'G' has been made a number of achievements with its science program as a part of public library's cultural program during the last 5 years. Recently, the national science centre has been established in the same city, the debate is now needed whether the science program in the public library have reasons to be maintained or to be reduced. The aim of this research is on the operating strategies of the science program in the public library. The research methods include case studies of operational strategies in domestic and foreign science centre, the level of satisfaction of local citizen on the science program, the vision of science program in the advancement of public library in the $21^{st}$ century. In results, the research proposes that the science program in public library should be maintained, but with locally characterised programs. In addition, the study also advised on the provision of scientific information, the strengthened search functions, and the development of user-centred services for those in science fields.

Mapping of the Universe of Knowledge in Different Classification Schemes

  • Given the variety of approaches to mapping the universe of knowledge that have been presented and discussed in the literature, the purpose of this paper is to systematize their main principles and their applications in the major general modern library classification schemes. We conducted an analysis of the literature on classification and the main classification systems, namely Dewey/Universal Decimal Classification, Cutter's Expansive Classification, Subject Classification of J.D. Brown, Colon Classification, Library of Congress Classification, Bibliographic Classification, Rider's International Classification, Bibliothecal Bibliographic Klassification (BBK), and Broad System of Ordering (BSO). We conclude that the arrangement of the main classes can be done following four principles that are not mutually exclusive: ideological principle, social purpose principle, scientific order, and division by discipline. The paper provides examples and analysis of each system. We also conclude that as knowledge is ever-changing, classifications also change and present a different structure of knowledge depending upon the society and time of their design.

  • Educational technology (ET) and learning sciences (LS) are two related disciplines that have shared interests in studying technologies for advancing human learning. This study conducted a content analysis of articles published in authoritative academic journals, Educational Technology Research and Development (ETR&D) and Journal of the Learning Sciences (JLS) from 2003 to 2012. By selecting and examining 93 issues with 429 articles during this decade with three analytical frameworks, the purpose of this study is to determine research trends precisely and create a scientific communication and theoretical connections for these two disciplines. The illustrated results indicate the dialogue between these two communities has begun yet accompanied by some certain limitations, whereas, they still need be more cooperative and communicational to move towards further integration, so as to contribute to promoting progressive education, learning theory and practice.

Monitoring of Wine Quality by using Environmentally friendly Tomato Concentrate and Commercial Wines (친환경 토마토 농축액을 이용한 토마토 와인과 시중 판매 와인 품질 모니터링)

  • This study investigated the quality characteristics of fermented wines using a selected strain to obtain basic data on sugar-free tomato wine production. Alcohol content of the tomato and commercial wine was 8.2~12.9%, whereas tomato wine showed a relatively low alcohol content of 8.2%. For total phenol content, Chile wine showed the highest value of 162.89 mg/100 g, followed by persimmon wine at 122.33 mg/100 g. Tomato wine showed a relatively high total phenol content of 96.57 mg/100 g. In all sections, xylose was not detected, although there were differences in free sugars depending on each product. Acetic and citric acid contents were highest in tomato wine, and the six kinds of commercial wine and tomato wine showed acetic acid content of 800.6 mg/100 g and citric acid content of 1,064.4 mg/100 g. The total free amino acid content was 100.63 mg/100 g in tomato wine, which was 2~3 times higher compared to that in commercial wine ($26.33{\pm}52.15mg/100g$).

The Characteristics of Formative Assessments Practiced in Middle School Science Teaching from a Constructivist Perspective (중학교 과학수업에서 형성평가의 실제 - 구성주의적 관점에서의 형성평가를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of formative assessments practiced in middle school science teaching from a constructivist perspective. In order to examine the practices of formative assessments in science teaching, 7 science classes were observed and video-taped for each of 2 instructions. We also interviewed the teachers and 3 students per each class with semi-structured questions. The findings indicated that 3 types of formative assessments were generally used in science teaching; planned, interactive, and transitional from planned to interactive. Teachers tended to assess students' personal, social, and scientific developments through formative assessments. The assessment of scientific development was the most frequent pattern and was classified into the assessments of content, process, and context. However, formative assessments concerning content covered in class were dominant. The processes of formative assessments consisted of three interdependent stages; getting informations from students, judging their responses, and giving feedbacks to them. The types of questions and feedbacks used were also influenced by the extent of interactions between the teachers and the students.

Study of Scientific Comparison for the Characteristics of Black Ware Excavated from White Porcelain Kiln of Yongyeon-ri, Damyang and those of Other Regions

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the material characteristics of black wares excavated from Yongyeon-ri, Damyang and to clarify the correlation of the factors that develop black coulor compared with black wares excavated from other regions. As a results of absorption rate, colour coordinate, compositional mineral, section analysis and contents showed high correlation between the kilns and the waste dumplings, indicating that they were made using the same materials. Second, comparing the microtextures and contents of the glaze layer with the excavated sherds from other kilns, a characteristic coagulation phenomena of iron oxides were not observed in Yongyeon-ri and Gilmyeong-ri, and it was considered that the material, mixing ratio, and firing environment were different from those of Bonggok-dong. In addition, statistical analysis using the major components revealed that the bodies of Yongyeon-ri were highly correlated with those of Bonggok-dong, which is nearest to the region, and similar to Gilmyeong-ri in the glaze layer. The characteristics of colorant were different depending on Fe2O3 content and K2O content also contributed to the classification of the composition of each excavated kiln. Conclusionally, it can be seen from the scientific analysis that the colour of black wares excluded from different regions is materially different from that of iron oxide, the coloring condition, and the firing environment.

Development and Application of an Scientific Inquiry Program Related to School Science for Elementary Gifted Students; Using the Geological Museum (초등 영재학생을 위한 학교 학습 경험과 연계된 과학 탐구 프로그램 개발 및 적용; 지질 박물관을 이용하여)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and apply an scientific inquiry program related to school science for elementary gifted students. And development of a program had been used a geological museum. A science inquiry program had developed after verifying a content validity to 3 science education experts about program's design and content selection, and then program applied to 20 elementary gifted students during 4 weeks, 14 hours. The results of this study showed that gifted students interested in an inquiry program using a geological museum, and they were in full activity. Especially gifted students replied that they lodged in their memory that inquired into activities on listening a docent's explanation about exhibits. Gifted classroom teacher also replied that gifted students saw a high level of participation and expectation. And they replied that this program supplied a chance that gifted students can understand a meaning of inquiry.

Comparative analysis of nutritional values of riverine and marine hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha; Hamilton, 1882)

  • A study was performed to analyze the biochemical composition (moisture, protein, fat, ash, salt value, iron, calcium and phosphorus) of raw and salted hilsa. Pure (with less than 1% impurities) and clean dry salt was used (fish weight : salt weight = 3 : 1) for salting the hilsa. The nutrients values of the hilsa from two different regions were significantly (p < 0.05) varied. The biochemical compositions were also different before and after the processing of the hilsa. Riverine hilsa contains relatively more moisture ($57.79{\pm}0.51%$) and protein ($15.65{\pm}0.50%$) than marine hilsa. Fat ($16.39{\pm}0.51%$) and salt ($1.80{\pm}0.14%$) contents are higher in marine hilsa; whereas the ash ($7.88{\pm}0.35%$) content was higher in the riverine hilsa. Minerals like iron ($4.92{\pm}0.32mg/100g$) and calcium ($480.02{\pm}6.73mg/100g$) remain in large amounts in the marine hilsa, but the phosphorus ($112.36{\pm}4.40mg/100g$) content remains at a high level in the riverine hilsa. In addition, the protein (raw condition, $18.54{\pm}0.46%$, riverine; $17.12{\pm}0.42%$, marine and salted condition, $32.54{\pm}0.5%$, riverine; $27.31{\pm}0.48%$, marine) and fat (raw condition, $15.41{\pm}0.46%$, riverine; $19.07{\pm}0.51%$, marine and salted condition, $11.58{\pm}0.39%$, riverine; $13.6{\pm}0.55%$, marine) contents were higher in the abdominal region of the riverine and marine hilsa both in the raw and salted conditions than in the head and caudal region.

Comparison and Analysis of the 2009 Elementary Science Curriculum of South Korea and the Elementary Science Curriculum of Finland (우리나라 2009 개정 초등 과학교육과정과 핀란드 초등 과학교육과정 비교분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the elementary science curriculum of Finland, which ranked at the first place in the science domain of Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a comparative study on the academic achievements of OECD member nations, for three consecutive years and recorded a high national competitiveness index, and that of South Korea, thus providing information needed to develop curriculums and textbooks in the middle of occasional curriculum revisions and giving useful implications for the implementation of curriculum in the field of education in South Korea. The research findings were as follows: First, as for the science content areas based on the ratio of large area items according to the evaluation and analysis framework of TIMSS 2007, South Korea's ratio of life, chemistry, physics, and earth hardly showed fitness for TIMSS 2007 and exhibited equal distribution among the areas. In Finland, the ratio of life, chemistry, physical, and earth was similar to the fourth grade level of TIMSS 2007. The country showed differential distribution with life accounting for the highest percentage. Second, as for the cognitive domains, South Korea showed a high percentage in "Uses and Procedures of Tools" of "1. Knowing" and "Making Connections," "Comparison/Contrast/Classification," and "Uses of Models" of "2. Application." Finland recorded a high percentage in "Information Interpretation" of "2. Application." While South Korea focused on the uses and methods of scientific instruments during scientific activities, Finland made an approach with a focus on problems related to daily life such as the interpretation of information including reports and graphs from an interpretative perspective.
