Analyzing Science Teachers' Understandings about Scientific Argumentation in terms of Scientific Inquiry

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate science teachers' understandings about scientific argumentation in the classroom. Seven structured interview protocols were developed, asking the definition of scientific inquiry, the differentiation between scientific inquiry and hands-on activity, the opportunity of student argumentation, explicit teaching strategies for scientific argumentation, the critical example of argumentation, the criteria of successful argumentation, and the barrier of developing argumentation. The results indicate that there are differences and similarities in understandings about scientific argumentation between two groups of middle school teachers and upper elementary. Basically, teachers at middle school define scientific inquiry as the opportunity of practicing reasoning skills through argumentation, while teachers at upper elementary define it as the more opportunities of practicing procedural skills through experiments rather than of developing argumentation. Teachers in both groups have implemented a teaching strategy called "Claim-Evidence Approach," for the purpose of providing students with more opportunities to develop arguments. Students' misconception, limited scientific knowledge and perception about inquiry as a cycle without the opportunity of using reasoning skills were considered as barriers for implementing authentic scientific inquiry in the classroom.

자유탐구활동이 초등학생의 과학탐구능력과 과학적 태도에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Free Inquiry Activities on the Science Process Skills and Scientific Attitudes of Elementary School Students)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how free inquiry activities affects the scientific process skills and scientific attitudes of 5th and 6th of elementary school students. For this study, 265 elementary students from 5th and 6th grade in Seoul were selected. In comparison group 130 students were implemented and to the experimental group 135 students who did not the free inquiry activities were implemented. The result of this study is as follows: First, curiosity was the most affective factor that motivate free inquiry activities and made them select their topics. Most of the students invested for the inquiry activity in less than 3 weeks. They had some help in every stages. Students became interested in free inquiry activities because they learned new facts and enjoyed doing experiments and they wanted to continue for the same reasons. Second, free inquiry activities had little effect on the basic science process skills of the experimental group, compared to the control group at the significant difference of p=0.05. Third, free inquiry activities had considerable effect on the integrative inquiry process skills of the experimental group, compared to the control group at the significant difference of p=0.05. Fourth, the result of the post-test of the experimental group showed that free inquiry activities had no effect on scientific attitudes at the significant difference of p=0.05. In conclusion, free inquiry activities will be much more effective in developing integrative inquiry process skills than in developing basic scientific process skills and scientific attitudes.

온-오프라인 혼합 학습환경에서 과학교사의 교수 지향과 PCK 특징 (Characteristics of Teaching Orientation and PCK of Science Teachers in Online-offline Mixed Learning Environment)

  • 본 연구는 온-오프라인 혼합 학습환경에서 과학교사의 교수 지향과 그에 따른 PCK의 특징 탐색을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구에서는 교사 12명을 대상으로 설문, 반구조화 면담, 수업관찰 및 현장노트의 질적 자료를 수집하여 귀납적으로 분석하였다. 본 연구 참여교사의 과학 교육 목표 지향과 과학 교수·학습 지향의 조합으로 범주화하여 '과학 개념 이해-강의식 수업' '과학 개념형성-탐구 수업' '과학 개념 및 탐구 과정 적용-탐구 수업' '과학 개념 및 탐구 과정 적용-강의식 수업' '과학 정보 분석 및 판단-탐구 수업' '과학적 태도 함양-탐구 수업' '과학적 태도 함양-강의식 수업' '과학·기술·사회 상호관계 인식 함양-탐구 수업'의 교수 지향을 추출하였다. 온-오프라인 혼합 학습환경에서 과학 교육 목표 지향과 관계없이 '탐구 수업 지향'의 교사는 '강의식 수업 지향'의 교사와 다르게 다양한 탐구 활동을 위한 온라인 학습환경 특이적인 교육과정에 관한 지식을 형성하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. '과학 개념 이해-강의식 수업 지향'의 교사들은 학생 이해 점검을 위한 질문 전략, 반복 강의 전략 등의 교수 전략에 관한 지식을 가지고 있었다. 반면, '과학 개념 형성-탐구 수업 지향'의 교사들은 학생들의 과학 개념 형성을 위해 온라인 학습환경에서 실시간 모둠 활동을 수행하는 전략, 코로나 19 이전 수행하던 대면 모둠 활동을 가상 실험, 학생 개별 실험으로 대체하여 수행하는 전략에 관한 지식을 가지고 있었다. '과학 개념 이해-강의식 수업 지향'의 교사들은 학생 과학 학습에 관한 지식이 드러나지 않은 반면, '과학 개념 형성-탐구 수업 지향'의 교사들은 온라인 학습환경에서 탐구 수업 관련된 학생의 학습 어려움에 관한 지식을 가지고 있었다.

초등학생을 위한 자유 탐구 프로그램 개발 및 적용: 학생의 과학 탐구 기능 특성 및 지속적 피드백을 중심으로 (Development and Application of Open Inquiry Program : Focusing on the Students' Traits of Science Inquiring Ability and Repeated Feedback)

  • The revised curriculum in 2007 adds an open inquiry approach to increase students' creativity and interest in science. Because it is the first time for elementary students to perform the open inquiry due to the national curriculum, it is essential that teachers give students' successful experiences in order to build a positive impression about inquiry activity. The purpose of this research is to develop and apply the open inquiry program. The research findings are as follows: First, we analyzed the students' traits of open inquiry ability during the program. The third and fourth grade students showed weakness in operating and inquiring abilities. They also feared failure and were unable to concentrate in classes which were based on explanation or discussion. When students had unexpected results, however, their inquiring abilities and creativeness increased considerably. Additionally there were some students who were stressed during the science-inquiry activity, due to no interest in science and an inability to think scientifically. Second, we developed an open inquiry program for elementary students. The program was modified, reflected upon the students' traits during open inquiry in class. Through repeated feedback like this, we completed the program. Third, for those who studied in the lessons there was a meaningful change in students' science inquiry abilities and abilities to perform 'formulating a hypothesis' and 'the control of variables'. These students' level of self-inquiry performance improved steadily. Moreover, they obtained a strong attachment to their inquiry and understood the method of quantitative experiments.

초등 과학영재학생들의 자유탐구 산출물 특성 분석 (Analysis on the Characteristics of Free Inquiry Products for Scientifically-Gifted Elementary School Students)

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of "free inquiry" products for scientifically-gifted elementary school students. To do this, 5~6 graders (n=99) at a gifted science education institutes in Seoul were selected. The products (n=82) of "free inquiry" submitted by the students in 2018 and 2019 were analyzed according to their contents and method types. The analysis of the results showed that the free inquiry outputs of scientifically-gifted students tended to not include the scientific knowledge of the upper grades than the corresponding students. In the outputs, the scientific knowledge in different grades were often not linked. There were relatively many cases of convergence of knowledge in various science and/or non-science subjects and knowledge of 'physics', whereas knowledge of 'earth science' were the least. The outputs were more often aimed at "finding scientific facts" than "development and invention" and tended to target non-living things rather than living things. The scientifically-gifted students tended to conduct free inquiry using 'experimental-centered inquiry' by themselves rather than by group. They were also most likely to conduct experiments only once, and did not clearly write down the period of their inquiry. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

An Analysis of the Effects of Learning Stress for Inquiry Activities in College Earth Science Course

  • This study analyzed variations of learning stress by comparing the salivary cortisol levels of students who participated in Earth Science inquiry activities. The cortisol concentrations between the pre- and post-inquiries of the sample of 34 university students, who had taken the course of 'Basic Earth Science and Experiments', were analyzed. The Earth Science inquiries consisted of geology and astronomy activities. The observational geology activities consisted of a session of 'structure contours and map patterns' and the cognitive astronomy activities consisted of a session of 'representations of horizontal and equatorial coordinates'. These Earth Science inquiry activities were found to cause students to have anxiety, and the thought processes that these activities involved were found to cause learning stress. The variations in cortisol concentrations of students increased by $1.6{\pm}5.9ng\;mL^{-1}$ after conducting observational activities in geology compared with $2.1{\pm}6.2ng\;mL^{-1}$ after doing cognitive activities in astronomy. The analysis of the observational activities in the geology inquiry activities indicated that they were consistent with low levels of learning stress. Conversely, the analysis of the cognitive activities in the astronomy inquiry activities showed significant individual variations in cortisol concentrations. Furthermore, individual differences in cognitive ability were reflected in the astronomy inquiry activities. While students, who received high scores, exhibited low levels of stress in the geology inquiry activities, they showed high levels of stress in the astronomy inquiry activities. It was concluded that, in the case of students with high scores in the study, the level of learning stress increased due to the raised anxiety in cognitive inquiry activities. In contrast, students, who received low scores in the study, exhibited high levels of stress in the geology inquiry activities, and low levels of stress in the astronomy inquiry activities.

2015 개정 교육과정 '과학탐구실험' 평가 도구 및 평가 현황 탐색 (An Investigation on the Assessment Tool and Status of Assessment in the 'Scientific Inquiry Experiment' of the 2015 Revised Curriculum)

  • 2015 개정 교육과정이 도입됨에 따라 신설된 과학탐구실험은 과학적 실천을 통한 과학의 학습과 핵심역량의 함양 등의 측면에서 기대를 받고 있는 과목이다. 특히, 변화하는 평가의 맥락에 기초하여 실천중심의 교과목인 과학탐구실험에서의 다각화된 평가가 운영될 필요가 있으나, 이에 대한 다양한 어려움과 한계가 보고되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 과학탐구실험의 평가 현황을 살피고, 이로부터 평가의 운영과 지원 방안을 고찰하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 25명의 현직 과학교사로부터 과학탐구실험 수업에서 사용되었던 평가 도구와 이에 대한 설명 자료를 수집하여 분석하였다. 평가 도구의 분석은 평가 요소, 평가 기준, 평가 방법의 측면에서 이루어졌고, 평가 결과가 어떻게 활용되는지도 살펴보았다. 결과에 대한 타당성 확보를 위해 과학교육 전문가와 교사들로부터 점검을 받았고, 추가적으로 분석 결과에 대한 의견도 청취하여 연구에 활용하였다. 연구 결과, 교사들은 탐구 기능요소 중 특정 요소만을 중점적으로 평가하고 있었고, 일부 기능 요소는 특정한 주제 및 맥락과 연계하여 평가되었으나 활용 빈도는 낮았다. 또한, 인지적 영역과 정의적 영역에 대한 평가도 이루어지기는 했으나, 각 영역을 평가하는 데 있어서 한계점도 관찰할 수 있었다. 평가 기준의 측면에서 평가 목표는 대체적으로 제시되어 있으나, 평가 목표에 대한 세부 평가 요소의 구분 및 각 요소별 행동 특성을 단계적으로 진술하는 등의 구체적 기준 수립이 이루어진 사례는 상대적으로 적었다. 평가 방법에서 평가의 시점과 주체는 각각 '수업 후 평가'와 '교사 평가'가 주로 사용되었고, 다른 방법은 특정 내용, 특정 상황으로 한정되어 활용되었다. 평가 결과는 모든 사례에서 성적 산출을 위해서 활용되었고, 일부만이 수업 개선과 학생 피드백을 위한 목적으로 활용하고 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 과학탐구실험에서의 학생 평가를 지원하기 위한 방안에 대해 논의하였다.

한국의 초등 과학 교과서 생명영역에 나오는 탐구 주제 및 생물 재료에 대한 초등 예비교사들의 인식 분석 (The Analysis of Pre-service Elementary Teachers' Perception on Biology Inquiry Subjects, and biology Materials in the Korea Elementary School Science Textbook)

  • The aim of this study was to analyze a group of pre-service elementary teachers experience on the cognitive terms of biology inquiry subjects, and experience on living materials related with the domain of life in the Korea elementary school science textbook. Firstly, elementary school pre-service teachers had the confidence of inquiry subjects related with the domain of life such as 'when we take breath what will happen in human body?' and 'Can we make the model of human body?' But they did have the most diffidence of 'The search for pieris rapae, a cabbage butterfly's life', 'Can we grow the little creature?' The reason why pre-service elementary teachers had diffidence of comprehending experiment procedure and planning ability was that 'they focused on understanding the scientific concepts instead of planning experiments by themselves', and 'they carried out the least amount of experiments' Secondly, elementary school pre-service teachers had never experienced biology materials related with the domain of life in the Korea elementary school biology science textbook such as 'tradescantia reflexa', 'Caddis larva', 'hydrilla verticillata', and 'Plantain lily.' According to the findings obtained from the study, the reason why they had never seen the biology materials was that they had the least opportunity of immediately observing life creatures due to memorization-intensive classes.

중학교 1학년 과학 교과서의 탐구 영역 분석 (Analyses of Scientific Inquiry in Science VII)

  • 이 연구는 제7차 과학과 교육과정에 따라 저술된 7종의 중학교 1학년 과학 교과서에 제시된 과학적 탐구 과정 및 활동의 개수를 확인하고 그 적절성을 판단할 목적으로 수행하였다. 전반적으로 볼 때 제 7차 과학과 교육과정에 제시된 과학적 탐구의 기본적 과정은 어느 정도 잘 반영되어 있으나, 통합적 탐구 활동은 대체로 미흡하다. 또한, 교과서에 제시된 과학적 탐구 과정 및 활동이 그 과제와 일치하지 않는 것이 많으며, 특히 실험은 단 1개도 엄격한 의미의 실험으로 볼 수 없다. 논문의 마지막 부분에서는 과학적 탐구의 통합적 과정과 탐구 활동도 충분히 반영될 수 있게 해야 하며, 특히 실험과 조사의 의미를 분명하게 정의되어야 할 필요성을 제시하였다.

교사양성 대학에서의 일반화학실험 개선과 적용 (Reformation and Application of an Introductory Chemistry Laboratory at the University for Teacher Education)

  • 이 연구에서는 문제 해결을 강조한 탐구적 일반화학 실험을 개발하여 그 적용 효과와 학생들의 실험에 참여하는 태도에 미치는 영향을 알아보는데 목적을 두고 있다. 문제 해결을 강조한 일반화학 실험이 실험에 참여하는 태도 변화에 효과가 있었는데, 맹목적 참여자에서 비판적 참여자로 변화한 수가 실험집단에서 3배 가까이 많았다. 또한, 차별성 인식, 탐구 정도, 토론의 유용성 부분에서 유의미한 차이를 보였다.
