  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the learning contents presented in high school science and in pre-service science textbooks of college of education, and to examine educational implications for pre-service science teachers by analysing their connection to each other. High school science is called as 'convergence science.' Seven high school science textbooks and eleven science textbooks related to physics, chemistry, biological science, and earth science for pre-service teachers were selected to analyse learning contents. The relationship between high school science with those of college-level science textbooks for pre-service science teachers was found when the learning contents were compared. Science textbooks for pre-service science teachers have the biggest number of learning contents on the chapter 'Energy and Environment' of high school science. About 86.6% of learning contents of high school science were introduced on textbooks on science, but pre-service teachers should learn the remainder. The part of learning contents presented in high school science textbooks was higher than the college-level for pre-service science teachers. Moreover, the part of learning contents was included in Engineering & Technology. And these required a special teacher education. Accordingly, the results suggested that learning contents for high school science should be optimized and reduced. Also, various educational programs should be developed and educational curriculum for pre-service science teachers should be revised.

  • The textbook is a predominant feature of most classrooms. Because the textbook is an important aspect of educational experience, it is essential that the content of the texts be carefully scrutinized. The purpose of this study was to examine the visual portrayal of gender groups in elementary $"Chay{\tilde{o}}n"$ textbooks developed by the 6th National Science Curriculum. An instrument was developed to analyze the nature and type of activity engaged in by these groups as well as how often members of these groups were portrayed. Data were collected from 8 elementary $"Chay{\tilde{o}}n"$ textbooks. The results show the following two different features. While the elementary $"Chay{\tilde{o}}n"$ textbooks do not show gender-biases in representing science learning activities such as observing, experimenting, measuring, they show distinct gender-stereotyped roles and activities. It is expected that the results of this study are considered in developing the new elementary "Science" textbooks which show gender-fairness.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare and analyse the subject organization and teaching units of middle school science curriculums and science textbooks, by studying the organization of subject matter and content scope and level of middle school science subject in South and North Korea. As a result of this study, the composition, scope, and level of content between middle school science textbooks in South and North Korea were similar. However, the study found that science education objectives, separated science curriculum subject organization, economical efficiency weighted format and organization of science subject matter, result-centered experiments, the enlightenment of Kim Ilsung and his son in North Korea science education were very far from the desirable direction of science education. Therefore, the view on level-based curriculum and organization of the science curriculum should be integrated, and preparation of student-centered organization of textbooks and expansion of science-technology-society content is needed before unification. And also, the united Korea science curriculum shouldn't simply compromise or neutralize between middle school science curriculum in South and North Korea. They should make a future-oriented plan for information and globalism society.

  • In this study, the types of inquiry activities in the $5^{th}$ & $6^{th}$ grade science textbooks according to the 2015 revised science national curriculum were analyzed and compared according to grade level and science area. Science textbooks for elementary school $5^{th}$ & $6^{th}$ graders contain quite diverse types of inquiry activities, which are student-centered inquiry activities. There were comparatively higher proportions of inquiry types such as experiment & observation and simulation, but relatively lower of inquiry types of investigation-discourse & presentation, discussion, expression. Elementary science textbooks are expected to cultivate science key competencies for elementary school students. Considering the science area, the motion & energy, substances, earth & space, and integration areas had the most experiment & observation among activity types, while the life area had the most simulation activities. Even in some area of the 6th grade science textbook, there was little or no data interpretation, discussion, and simulation activities. In order to achieve the goal of elementary science education, science textbooks should be developed considering the revision of future elementary science curriculum.

  • This study is focused on the main concepts of gravity and geomagnetics which are introduced in the earth science textbooks of high school in 7th curriculum. This study examines the validity and accuracy of the Earth Science textbooks and shows some effective teaching plans by using the latest materials. This study also illustrates the main concepts of gravity and geomagnetics through presenting some effective and practical teaching-learning methods. The results of the study were as follows: First of all, a number of main concepts of six textbooks of high school were selected; the field of gravity, the direction and dimension of gravity, the measurement of gravity, the main reason of gravity anomaly and geoid, earth terrestrial magnetic field, secular variation of goemagnetics. Secondly, most Earth Science textbooks of high school explains the main concepts of the gravity and geomagnetics in similar ways. Those textbooks, however, don't put an emphasis on the essential contents which has been regarded as important thing in terms of the current educational course of study. The high school textbooks also use the material which is too old-fashioned and has some problems of accuracy and validity. Especially, many main concepts of the textbooks and scientific data(such as the direction of gravity, the measurement of gravity, the main reason of gravity anomaly, the use of geoid, secular variation) are different with those of South Korea, In addition, some materials(graphs and diagrams) are very old ones and they don't have authentic information. Finally, Among the various main concepts, some important ideas (the direction of the gravity and the method of measuring gravity, the measurement and use of gravity anomaly, the definition of geoid and secular variation of geomagnetics) should be corrected by showing the latest and authentic materials.

  • The years from 1895 to 1915 marked an important period in Korean because it was the start of modern education during which a new school system was developed. In particular, the Government made laws and rules concerning the use of textbooks in schools. In this research information about books in use in schools was obtained from the {School Textbook List} which was drawn up during this period. Science textbooks printed in Korea from 1895 to 1915 were control1ed in their use by the Ministry of Education and the Government General of Chosen. They used the Private School Ordinance, Regulations for Official Examination of Textbooks in 1908, and Law of Publication in 1909 as the main means of controlling textbooks. The official examination of textbooks under the Japanese rule of Korea resulted in an increasing number of science textbooks being banned. While science textbooks had enjoyed more freedom from control by the Government General of Chosen than other textbooks, the situation changed significantly as Japan to intensify the control of all kinds of textbooks in Korea.

  • Numerical data of the geological time scale in Earth Science I, II textbooks and those of University textbooks of Korea and other countries are briefly reviewed. Numerical data of the geologic time scale shown in Earth Science I, II textbooks are mostly out of date and many of them follow those in the University textbooks of Korea. The same situation is apparent for introductory Earth Science or Geology textbooks of other countries as old data exist in their text books as well. There are many new data in the International Stratigraphic Chart (ISC 2000) and International Geologic Time Scale (IGTS 2003) recently updated by International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) and A Geologic Time Scale (GTS 2004). Among the new data, some important things are Paleogene and Neogene Periods of Cenozoic Era, Mississippian and Pensilvanian Epochs of Carborniferous Period, Paleoproterozoic, Mesoproterozoic, and Neoproterozoic Eras of Proterozoic Eon, and Eoarchean, Paleoarchean, Mesoarchean, and Neoarchean Eras of Archean Eon. These new data should be used in the new Earth Science textbooks.

  • This study analyzed illustrations presented in middle school science 14 paper textbooks and 14 digital textbooks under the 2015 revised curriculum in terms of gender stereotypes. In both paper and digital textbooks, the most common type of illustration was multiple pupils. For pupils, the frequency of gender was balanced in both paper and digital textbooks. However, there were differences among publishers in digital textbooks. In both paper and digital textbooks, girls showed a higher frequency than boys in learning activities. However, the opposite tendency was observed in non-learning activities. In particular, non-learning activities of digital textbooks showed gender imbalance among all publishers. In both paper and digital textbooks, behavioral characteristics were mostly described to be active without gender differences. But, there were differences among publishers in digital textbooks. For adults, men showed a higher frequency than women in both paper and digital textbooks. Gender frequency was balanced in family activities, however, men showed a higher frequency in social activities. Unlike paper textbooks, digital textbooks were gender balanced in occupational activities. In both paper and digital textbooks, the number of occupations in which men appeared more frequently was higher than that in which women appeared more frequently. Especially, men showed a higher frequency than women in both scientist and researcher. Behavioral characteristics were mostly biased in terms of gender in both paper and digital textbooks.

  • In the elementary school science curriculum, wind is one of the most important concept. In particular, land and sea breeze has been a key example to deliver how wind is driven, and thus its model experiments have been used to help students understand causes of wind. Here we compare causes and explanations for wind and land and sea breeze between textbooks in colleges and elementary schools to examine any potential improvement for the contents. In addition, we conducted survey to examine how pre-service teachers understand land and sea breeze, and convection box experiment used in elementary school textbooks is useful to understand land and sea breeze. Based on the comparison, we find that college level textbook explains the cause of wind as atmospheric pressure difference while elementary school textbooks explain them differently according to curriculums. In the textbooks, there are a difference in the way described for land and sea breeze. Analysis of questionnaire indicate that pre-service teachers understood land and sea breeze correctly, and they selected the convection box experiment in 2009 curriculum textbooks as the most suitable one. Explanations and experiments for land and sea breeze in the textbooks have been revised as the modification of elementary school curriculums. We expect this study helps to deliver more solid contents for wind and land and sea breeze in the upcoming new curriculum.

  • This study is focused to characteristics of earth region vocabularies used in 7th curricula science textbooks for 3rd to 6th grades of elementary school. The numbers of earth region vocabularies are generally increased from the lower to the higher grade textbooks, ‘science’ and ‘experiments and observation’. In ‘science’ textbooks, numbers and use frequencies of earth region vocabularies are predominant in astronomy and atmospheric science vocabularies. Meanwhile, in ‘experiment and observation’, domains related with astronomy have relatively more numbers of the vocabularies but domains related with geology have higher use frequencies of those vocabularies relative to domains related with another areas. ‘Strata’ and ‘fossil’ of geology vocabularies, ‘air temperature’ of atmospheric science vocabularies and ‘sun’ and ‘planet’ of astronomy vocabularies are commonly the highest frequent in the use for science textbooks and experiment and observation. In the both books, earth region vocabularies are derived from 70% to 80% words of Chinese, below 10% of pure Korean, and rest of other languages. Additionally, cases of pure Korean vocabularies unpacked from professional nomenclatures, ones without previous explanations and multiple vocabulary applications to same phenomena are observed in the both books. Synthesizing above results, it is suggested that the reconsideration of domains related with each area of earth science and vocabulary uses assigned to above cases is necessary, in possible.
