과학계 박물관의 전시공간구성과 관람객 움직임의 특성(I) (A Study on the Spatial Configuration and Characteristics of Visitors' Movement in Science Museum(I))

  • The premise of this study is that an ultimate objective in planning an exhibition space is visitors' experiences created by a result of their first-hand experiences and responses within an exhibition space, and this result can be recognized in the visitors' movement. Thus, the exhibition layout that can directly affects viewers' main line of flow and movement patterns was examined vis--vis a mutually complementary relation in a triangular composition with the structure of exhibition space and the exhibition contents. This study, with the subjects of standing exhibit halls of Gwacheon National Science Museum, Daejeon National Science Museum, and Tokyo National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, analyzed 'the correlation between the configuration of the exhibition area and the visitors' movement. The targeted subjects were analyzed from the perspectives of type of architectural space and organization of the exhibition method, and the purpose of this study was to find a spatial evidence to predict the spectator movement formed within the exhibition halls of science museums. The main indicators used are: Based on the investigation/analysis as described above, the following conclusion could be drawn. Diversity of exhibition environment and spectator movement: besides the two big categories of the types of architectural space and types of exhibition method, the construction of vertical circulation and size and shape of the exhibition space, distribution characteristics of exhibition medium, organization of symbolic space and such other diverse organizations and combinations of exhibition environment are implied to have the capability to alter the scope and degree of predicting spectator movement. As an example, the types of architectural space comprising the wide-area viewing circulation was found to be able to change the system of planar circulation according to the composition of vertical circulation. Along with this, it was implied that the format of architectural space influences the form of the exhibition space, and may also act as a factor directly influencing the diversity and arrangement of the exhibition methods. That is, the spatial elements comprising the exhibition environment acts inter-complexly, and exhibits characteristics of limiting or controlling spectator movement.

과학관 전시체험관에 대한 관람자 행동유형 및 만족도에 대한 연구 (A study on behavioral patterns and satisfaction of visitors depending on the characteristic of exhibition in science museum)

  • This study has been analyzed various exhibition in Ulsan Museum of Science which was opened in March 2011 and found out the connections between elementary school science and its curriculum. In addition, this study has pointed out how visitors' behavioral patterns change depending on the characteristics of exhibition. The Study has also examined the visitors' satisfaction on the educational effectiveness, facilities and environment of the museum and aimed to seek ways to revitalize and improve the general conditions of exhibition rooms which is essential for Ulsan Museum of Science. The results of analysis on the form exhibition showed that 31.7% were in a passive form and the other 68.2% were in active form which was 43 out of 63 exhibition. After analyzing the visitors behavioral patterns, the majority of exhibition with higher attraction power and holding power were active-type exhibition and especially the experience-type exhibition takes the large portion. Based on the survey, we found out that both students and teachers represent high expectations of pleasure through active experience. They showed high satisfaction rates on the number of exhibition, guide facilities, inside temperature and accessibility of Ulsan Museum of Science.

  • Although natural and science museum project is being promoted, performance of research that can be recommended for exhibition space plan is not sufficient. Nature and science museum is the space of participation type so structure and type of space depends on the content of exhibition. Therefore, this paper is the gradational research to understand correlation and characteristic and give direction for exhibition space plan suitable for system of exhibition content through analyzing system of exhibition content and structure of exhibition space. Further, prepare basic material for exhibition space of nature and science museum being newly planned or renovated through understanding structure of exhibition space according to exhibition scenario.

전시시나리오구조 유형별 관람행동특성에 관한 연구 - 자연과학계박물관을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Characteristics of Viewing Behaviors by the Composition Type Exhibition Scenarios - Focused on Natural Science Museums -)

  • The purposes of natural science museums are to educate the general public on the principles and application of science, and help them understand various aspects of science technology. Data should be analyzed by considering these educational aspects of exhibition, and the methods of presenting exhibits should be decided. Accordingly, the composition of exhibition contents with various exhibition elements has an important role at natural science museums. The relation and structure of exhibition themes are significant factors in helping visitors understand the principles of science and a system of viewing circulation can be used as an important tool for understanding the flow of exhibition. In other words, at the planning stage for the composition of exhibition contents, the relation of exhibition themes as well as the circulation patterns of viewers can induce active viewing behaviors. Therefore, centering on the patterns of viewing circulation as well as on the connectivity of exhibition themes at natural science museums, the purposes of this research are: 1) to conceptualize the composition of exhibition contents; and 2) to find elements that can induce active viewing behaviors by analyzing visitors' viewing behaviors. This research was establishing an analytical indicator of contact for viewing behaviors observed from the composition of exhibition scenarios, the active viewing patterns of engagement, first contact, and repeated contact were analyzed. First, a composition pattern with a high participation rate, in contact with exhibits, was found to induce an overall-viewing circulation and have a big ring of the composition of exhibition themes. Second, by inducing a partial-viewing circulation pattern, a high rate of first contacts was observed from a ring pattern of theme connection. Even for the structure with theme connection with depth, a high frequency of contacts with various exhibits was found when exhibition themes have a ring pattern. Third, the repeated contacts were mostly found in the form of scenarios, which has a successive structure of ring and cross patterns.

어린이과학관 전시 개선 모형 개발 및 적용에 따른 과학교육에서의 제언: 누리과정을 중심으로 (Developing Exhibit Improving Model of Children's Science Museum and its Implication in Science Education: Based on the Nuri Curriculum)

  • 본 연구는 어린이를 대상으로 한 어린이과학관의 전시 모형을 개발하여 어린이과학관 전시 연출의 가이드라인을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 전시 평가 분석틀과 유치원 교육과정을 기초로 하여 전시 주제로 '신체', '주변 사물', '자연 현상'을 전시 내용으로 한 전시를 제안하였다. '신체'를 주제로 한 전시의 연출은 동선과 색상 요소가 중요하며, '자연 현상'을 주제로 한 전시의 연출은 색상과 조명의 연출을 적용한 상황적 매체의 활용이 적절하다고 할 수 있다. 그리고 '주변 사물'을 주제로 한 전시의 연출은 사물을 대상으로 탐구할 수 있도록 단서나 설치물을 제공하는 것이 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 또한, 개발한 전시 모형의 타당성을 확보하기 위하여 전시 모형의 '거울'전시물에 대한 전시 연계프로그램을 개발하여 G과학관의 어린이관 방문 관람객에게 적용한 결과, 전시 모형을 통해 반사의 개념을 이해하고 표현할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이에 관람 대상에 적합한 전시 내용과 전시 매체, 전시 공간의 연출을 통해 전시 효과를 극대화하기 위한 전시 기획이 필요하며, 전시 기획에 있어 기초적인 가이드라인을 제공한다는 점에서 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.

  • This study aims to understand the correlation between system of exhibition contents and structure of exhibition space in nature and science museums. So, in this paper it deals with 10 examples of overseas nature and science museums as analytical objects, using Space Syntax as an analytical tool. In conclusion, the system of exhibition contents of nature & science museums can be divided into field and theme, and subdivided into total 6 systems according to categorization and integration. The system of exhibition contents by field is generally characterized by unconstricted access and system of exhibition contents by theme is generally marked by high visual openness. And the system of exhibition content according to categorization is characterized by strong concentration on exhibitory convex and its wide distribution.

Exploring Science Communication in Panels of Exhibitions and Proposing its Development Direction in Exhibition Education: Two cases of Natural History Museum

  • The purposes of this study were to explore what components of science communication and its level are contained in text panels of exhibitions in natural history museums and to propose its development direction of exhibition education in Korea. First, to find out the component and level of science communication contained in exhibition panels, the researcher team developed the analyzing tool which was called SEPAT (Science Exhibition Panel Analyzing Tool), then employed them to profile the component and level of science communication. Second, the researchers introduced the exemplary designed media of exhibitions to demonstrate how much science communication could be enhanced. The results were made as follows. First, the components of science communication was considerably weighted toward to 'concept' one. There were also a few 'awareness' and 'engagement', both of which were under 5% in each zone of exhibition and there was not 'NOSI' or 'opinion' embedded in the analyzed exhibitions. Second, the various type of designing exhibitions were found to promote or enhance the restrictedly represented components of science communication. It is suggestable for exhibitions to be designed through various type of 'media' to enhance science communication. Visitors are required to experience rich science communication to meet their educational needs, and exhibition developers in natural history museums and other museums are recommended to be professional in containing all components of science communication through various type of designing exhibitions.

과학관의 전시평가와 개선방안에 관한 기초연구 - 국립중앙과학관의 상설전시관을 중심으로 - (A Basic Study on the Exhibition Evaluation and Improvement in Science Museum - Focused on the exhibitions of the National Science Museum in Korea -)

  • To plan more effective exhibitions, exhibitions should be evaluated and verified through research. This is Important in that it will present measures for improving shortcomings in exhibition goals and procedures; and it will also provide new ideas and goals for future exhibition plans. The purposes of this study are to investigate the applicability of evaluation methods by organizing related theories systematically through a literature review and to provide more practical and valuable information about the methods by applying them to actual museums. For this study, the National Science Museum was investigated since it uses various themes and exhibition methods, compared with other science museums. Exhibition structures and presentation formats were first analyzed, and then the methods of trace and observation were used to investigate how visitors use the museum. Surveys were also conducted at two different times. The results of the analyses showed that problems of exhibits, arrangement methods of exhibition space, or guide systems are more prominent than those of the presentation format itself. Based on these results, measures for improvement are suggested as follows: First, new formats of exhibition halls using new window frames or holes should be explored to stimulate visitors' curiosity and to lead viewing traffic flow in the museum. Second, in presenting representative exhibits, a gate can be installed at each exhibition area, and representative exhibits are displayed by the gate or between exhibition booths. Third, if a small space is provided at the end of each exhibition area, it can be used to give an orientation on the next exhibition or used as a resting place.

국내 어린이 중심 과학전시 현황 파악 및 발전방향 모색 (Examining the Current Status Quo of Children's Science Exhibits and Exploring the Direction of Development in Children's Science Museum Exhibition)

  • 본 연구는 어린이를 대상으로 한 과학전시관의 현황을 파악하고 어린이 과학관에서의 교육효과를 높이기 위한 전시 공간연출의 개선방향을 제안하기 위한 연구이다. 이를 위하여 어린이과학관 전시물과 전시공간을 전시내용에 따라 크게 3가지 주제로 분류하고, 전시매체와 전시공간을 분석하는 분석틀을 개발하였다. 연구 대상은 국내 어린이를 대상으로 한 전시관 총 7곳을 목적 표집하여 선정하고, 촬영을 통해 자료를 수집하여 분석틀에 따라 분석하였다. 연구 결과, '신체'와 '주변 사물', '자연 현상'을 전시 내용으로 한 전시현황을 분석했을 때, 어린이의 발달수준에 맞지 않는 어려운 내용으로 구성되어 있으며, 전시매체 측면에서는 설명적 매체와 관찰형 매체가 주를 이루고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 전시공간 측면에서는 설치물요소와 색상요소에 의존하는 경향이 높으며, 전시 주제에 따른 동선의 흐름이 대체적으로 전시 내용 전체 스토리를 유추하기 어렵다고 할 수 있겠다. 이를 개선하고 어린이 과학관에서의 교육효과를 높이기 위해 전시 연출의 기획단계에서부터 관련 전문가들의 협업을 통해 전반적인 진행이 이루어져야 할 것이다.

과학계 박물관 전시공간의 흡입력과 지속력 분석(II) - 전시영역별 연출매체의 분포특성 분석을 중심으로 - (Analysis on Attraction Power and Holding Power of Exhibition Areas at Science Museum(II) - Focused on Analysis on Exhibition Method of Exhibition Spaces -)

  • This study analyzed visitors' behaviors in the viewpoint of Attraction Power and Holding Power of exhibits on the basis of exhibition layout of real science museums. Through the analysis, the study grasped efficiency of analysis index and exhibition environment elements which might have an effect on planning the exhibition space of a large-scale museum and producing detailed ranges of exhibition. The main indicators used are: 1. Attraction Power: it indicates the relative incidence of people who have stopped in front of an object/exhibit during the exhibition tour. It is calculated by dividing the number of people who stop by the total number of people who have visited the museum or gallery. 2. Holding Power: it measures the average time spent in front of an information/communication element. It is calculated by dividing the average time of stay by the time "necessary" to read an element. As a result of analyzing the exhibition areas of National Science Museum (Daejeon) and National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation(Tokyo), the Holding Power was found to be relatively lower than the Attracting Power. This means that 3.5 out of 10 visitors stop in front of the exhibit in 6 exhibition areas, and among these, only 1/10 is used when compared to the user required time of the exhibits. In other words, like the method of deriving an analysis index, the stage of viewing can be categorized as Attracting Power and Holding Power, and because the stage from Attracting Power to the stage of Holding Power are strongly linked, it shows that it is not easy to display a meaningful result. Except, the general distribution of Attracting Power was shown to be high from the entrance area of the exhibition hall based on the standard of viewing sequence. Also, the Holding Power became sequentially lower according to the sequence of exhibition viewing and displayed a meaningful interrelationship with the distribution ratio of island exhibits. In the case of island exhibition method, it is less influenced by the movement flow of visitors when compared to the wall type method of exhibition and can be understood as an exhibition method that provides spatial chances enabling stopping and viewing.
