  • In Korean cases, the occupation of building construction is below 10% of the total industry workers but from a accident rate point of view, it is a risk serious industry and it's hazard is very considerable which accident rate is up to 30% of the total industry workers. The reason of high accident rate of the building construction is its own characteristic, hazard of the work in which is implicated and the shortage of safety counter plan and information, so it is most required to the building construction that educating, training, short and long period approaching to prevent the hazard. The safety information of building construction which is related to safety accident is divided into human and material such as hazard, work situation, cause and counter plan. The existing hazard cases imply all of the information about the work type and work progress of the building construction, so if the research of the every fact is well accomplished, we can obtain the useful information and prevent the hazard of building construction. From this point of view, the emphasis of this study is based on analyzing the cause of hazard first, suggesting the safety information each part of work type and work progress second, and finally making the all existing hazard cases to the Data Base and developing the safety information system.

A Study on the Development of Industrial Robot Workplace Safety System (산업용 로봇 작업장 안전시스템 개발에 대한 연구)

  • As the importance of artificial intelligence grows rapidly and emerges as a leader in technology, it is becoming an important variable in the next-generation industrial system along with the robot industry. In this study, a safety system was developed using deep learning technology to provide worker safety in a robot workplace environment. The implemented safety system has multiple cameras installed with various viewing directions to avoid blind spots caused by interference. Workers in various scenario situations were detected, and appropriate robot response scenarios were implemented according to the worker's risk level through IO communication. For human detection, the YOLO algorithm, which is widely used in object detection, was used, and a separate robot class was added and learned to compensate for the problem of misrecognizing the robot as a human. The performance of the implemented system was evaluated by operator detection performance by applying various operator scenarios, and it was confirmed that the safety system operated stably.

Evacuation Safety Evaluation of High School according to Hydrogen Fluoride Leakage

  • The purpose is to evaluate evacuation safety by simulating the toxic effects of hydrogen fluoride leaks in areas surrounding national industrial complexes and to suggest alternatives for areas that do not satisfy evacuation safety. For human casualties caused by hydrogen fluoride leakage accidents, Available Safe Egress Time (ASET) is calculated by the toxic effects quantified with the Areal Locations of Hazardous Atmospheres (ALOHA), an off-site consequence assessment program. The Required Safe Egress Time (RSET) is calculated through Pathfinder, an evacuation simulation program. Evacuation safety is assessed by comparing ASET and RSET. The ALOHA program was used to evaluate the time to reach AEGL-2 concentration in 12 scenarios. The Pathfinder program was used to assess the total evacuation time of the high school among specific fire-fighting objects. Of the 12 accident scenarios, ASET was larger than RSET in the worst-case scenarios 1 and 9. For the remaining 10 accident scenarios, the ASET is smaller than the RSET, so we found that evacuation safety is not guaranteed, and countermeasures are required. Since evacuation safety is not satisfactory, we proposed to set up an evacuation area equipped with positive pressure equipment and air respirators inside specific fire-fighting objects such as the high school.

Comparative Analysis of Disaster Safety Education Contents of National Curriculum in Korea : Focusing on the 2019 Revised Nuri Curriculum and the 2015 Revised Curriculum (우리나라 국가수준 교육과정의 재난안전 교육내용 비교 분석 : 2019 개정 누리과정과 2015 개정 교육과정을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the 2019 Revised Nuri Curriculum and the 2015 Revised Curriculum for the comparative analysis of disaster safety education contents in the national level curriculum. The main results of this study are as follows: First, the content of disaster safety education for preschoolers in the 2019 Revised Nuri Curriculum was clarified as 'Knowing how to react in case of accident, fire, disaster, abuse, kidnap etc.' in 'Living safety' category of physical exercise and health sections. Second, in the 2015 Revised Curriculum, disaster safety education contents for elementary school students were found to have the difference between school year in same elementary school curriculum. For first and second graders, 'Disaster safety' was cleary presented in one of major categories of 'Living safety', which was newly created at the creative activity in the Revised 2015 Curriculum. On the other hand, for third to sixth graders, safety education is dispersed in the related subjects such as physical education, science, practical courses or in the creativity activity. Third, the safety contents in the Revised 2015 Curriculum for middle school and high school were also found to be dispersed in social studies, physical education, science, technology-home economics and creativity activity. The results of this study showed that the contents of disaster safety education in the national curriculum did not have continuity and systemicity from kindergarten to high school. Therefore, efforts should be made to ensure continuity and systemicity of disaster safety education contents when the national curriculum is revised in the future.

Theoretical and numerical analysis of the influence of initial stress gradient on wave propagations

  • The investigation of stress wave propagation in a medium with initial stress has very important application in the field of engineering. However, the previous research less consider the influence of initial stress gradient on wave propagation. In the present paper, the governing equation of wave propagation in elastic continuum material with inhomogeneous initial stress is derived, which indicated that the inhomogeneous initial stress changed the governing equation of wave propagation. Additionally, the definite problem of wave propagation in material with initial stress gradient is verified by using mathematical physics method. Based on the definite problem, the elastic displacement-time relationship of wave propagation is explored, which indicated that the inhomogeneous initial stress changed waveform and relationship of displacement-time histories. Furthermore, the spall process of blasting wave propagation from underground to earth surface is simulated by using LS-DYNA.

  • Daily workers in construction sites rarely receive the benefit of systematic safety and health training as they are required to move from one construction site to another in response to the start, completion, and repetition of construction works. Also, small- to medium-sized construction sites often lack the capacity to train their workers. Therefore, as in the advanced countries, basic OSH training sheme for construction workers should be conducted in the industrial-level, rather than in individual workplace-level, to make the training more effective. By doing so, only workers with the basic safety training will be able to engage in construction works. Consequently, accidents in the construction industry will decrease, as workers themselves who are at the forefront of the construction worksites are empowered to play the central role in accident prevention activities.

Running safety of high-speed train on deformed railway bridges with interlayer connection failure

  • In a railway bridge, the CRTS II slab ballastless track is subjected to interlayer connection failures, such as void under slab, mortar debonding, and fastener fracture. This study investigates the influences of interlayer connection failure on the safe operation of high-speed trains. First, a train-track-bridge coupled vibration model and a bridge-track deformation model are established to study the running safety of a train passing a deformed bridge with interlayer connection failure. For each type of the interlayer connection failure, the effects of the failure locations and ranges on the track irregularity are studied using the deformation model. Under additional bridge deformation, the effects of interlayer connection failure on the dynamic responses of the train are investigated by using the track irregularity as the excitation to the vibration model. Finally, parametric studies are conducted to determine the thresholds of additional bridge deformations considering interlayer connection failure. Results show that the interlayer connection failure significantly affects the running safety of high-speed train and must be considered in determining the safety thresholds of additional bridge deformation in the asset management of high-speed railway bridges.

Fractal kinetic characteristics of uranium leaching from low permeability uranium-bearing sandstone

  • The pore structure of uranium-bearing sandstone is one of the critical factors that affect the uranium leaching performance. In this article, uranium-bearing sandstone from the Yili Basin, Xinjiang, China, was taken as the research object. The fractal characteristics of the pore structure of the uranium-bearing sandstone were studied using mercury intrusion experiments and fractal theory, and the fractal dimension of the uranium-bearing sandstone was calculated. In addition, the effect of the fractal characteristics of the pore structure of the uranium-bearing sandstone on the uranium leaching kinetics was studied. Then, the kinetics was analyzed using a shrinking nuclear model, and it was determined that the rate of uranium leaching is mainly controlled by the diffusion reaction, and the dissolution rate constant (K) is linearly related to the pore specific surface fractal dimension (DS) and the pore volume fractal dimension (DV). Eventually, fractal kinetic models for predicting the in-situ leaching kinetics were established using the unreacted shrinking core model, and the linear relationship between the fractal dimension of the sample's pore structure and the dissolution rate during the leaching was fitted.

  • The construction industry remains serious accidents, injuries, and fatalities due to it's unique, dynamic, and temporary nature. On workplace sites, Safety pre-task planning is one of the efforts to minimize injuries and help construction personnel to identify potential hazards. However, the working conditions are complicated. Many activities, including tasks or job steps, are executing at the same time and place. It may lead to an increase in the risks from simultaneous tasks. This paper contributes to addressing this issue by introducing a safety risk interaction analyzing framework. To accomplish this objective, accident reports of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigated. The pairs of task incompatibility, which have time-space conflicts and lead to incidents, are found. Ontology technology is applied to build the risk database, in which the information is acquired, structuralized. The proposed system is expected to improve pre-task planning efficiency and relieve the burdens encountered by safety managers. A user scenario is also discussed to demonstrate how the ontology supports pre-task planning in practice.

A Study on the Educational Needs for College Education and Job Training to Enhance Safety Manager's Competencies: Based on the Survey of Safety Managers in Daejon & Chongju Area (안전관리 전문인력의 역량 제고를 위한 대학교육과 직무교육의 교육수요에 관한 연구: 대전·청주 지역 안전관리자에 대한 조사 결과를 중심으로)

  • As one of the useful approaches to enhance safety managers' competencies, this study aims to suggest improvement plans in terms of education in school and on the job for safety managers. Educational needs at schools and job training institutes were surveyed with 321 safety managers in Daejon & Chongju Area. Correspondence with university professors at safety engineering departments via email was also conducted. Collected data were put into the R stochastic program in codified form and quantitatively analyzed through two-dimensional cross-tabulations and a chi-square test. With respect to school education, three academic subjects were examined. Job training was suggested to be conducted as 'training for trainers', which should be more flexible in terms of contents, method, and fees. Periodical investigation of educational needs for safety personnel who are consumers of safety education and training was also proposed.
