The Current Status of Use and the Difference of Awareness by User Groups in the Cheongryongsan Vegetable Garden Park (청룡산 텃밭공원의 이용실태와 이용주체간 의식 차이)

  • This study intended for Cheongryongsan Community Garden in Gwanak-gu, one of the demonstration places for 'Community Garden' Project recently implemented by the Seoul Government. This study had two major purposes: investigating the current status of the management and usage and identifying its characteristics; investigating users' awareness to consider the construction and operation directions of sustainable community gardens. This study was conducted based on several surveys such as an investigation into the spatial configuration and the management system of parks through a field study, a use survey through a questionnaire survey for vegetable garden users and an awareness survey about the construction direction of gardens direction preferred by users through the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). As a result of a questionnaire survey for vegetable garden users, the usage status was summarized as follows: Considering the common trends in the 2012 and the 2013 user survey, women used Cheongryongsan Vegetable Garden more than men. Over fifties used it most of all users. Users were mostly neighborhood residents. They used to visit there three to five times a week and stayed for about 30 minutes to one hour. Users differently responded to the question related to the order of priority for the use of the garden in the 2012 and the 2013 survey. They had increasingly used it for individuals' production activities more than social exchanges. As a result of making an AHP analysis for general park users, vegetable garden users there were clear differences in the targets which each subject put emphasis on in relation to the construction and operation of vegetable gardens. General park users recognized a vegetable garden as a park where park functions and the functions of the vegetable garden coexisted. On the other hand, vegetable garden users viewed it as a space where they attached importance to the functions of the vegetable garden like an allotment. Last, this study contemplated subjects related to the construction and operation of vegetable gardens which had to be considered in the future. Vegetable gardens tended to be biased as personal hobby places. It was viewed that the main reason was insufficient support activities for vegetable garden education and exchange programs originally planned when vegetable gardens had been constructed. Vegetable garden users recognized vegetable gardens as places for individuals' farming activities like allotments. For the desirable operation of vegetable gardens, it would be necessary to give priority to the park management before the production activities in individuals' vegetable gardens. The important role of the government would be to build the base through the provision of education and opportunities so that a local resident organization could actively participate in the management of a vegetable garden after a vegetable garden was constructed. It would be necessary to make a use survey and an awareness survey for users conducted in this study on a regular basis because the surveys could be important basic data in the decision-making process for the sustainable operations of the vegetable garden.

Resetting the Evaluation Indicators for School Garden Education Service

  • Background and objective: The vitalization of urban agriculture has increased various forms of experience-based education using school gardens, which raised the importance of school gardens in terms of value as well as the need to develop an implementation system for education-based agricultural experience service using school gardens. Thus, we reset the evaluation indicators from the previous study to establish objective evaluation indicators that enable quantitative comparison of school garden education services. Methods: Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and direct question (DQ) surveys were conducted on 20 experts from October 12 to 19, 2020 after establishing the purpose and subjects of evaluation, and then the weights were calculated using the Expert Choice 2010 program. Results: First, we analyzed the problems of the previous indicators by categorizing the performance indicators and comparing and verifying them with six requirements of valuation. Then, we added 'welfare values' and established sub-indicators accordingly. The importance of value indicator in AHP was in the order of education values (0.544), health values (0.182), welfare values (0.164), environmental values (0.062), and economic values (0.049). The importance of environmental and economic values was relatively low, less than 0.1. The importance of sub-indicators was highest in cultivating character (0.144), followed by enhancing ecological sensitivity (0.141) > promoting mental health (0.134) > cultivating agricultural literacy (0.120) > improving social skills (0.104). And mitigating climate change in environmental values was lowest (0.009). Increase in income was the lowest (0.036). This can be regarded as the expression of change to increase the educational effect based on collective life and the connotative meaning of 'school'. In the case of DQ, the AHP weight and order were the same, but the environmental and economic values were relatively low, and the result was different from AHP weight. For sub-indicators, the importance in DQ was highest in promoting mental health (0.136), followed by promoting physical health (0.085), ]cultivating character (0.082), social integration (0.072), and enhancing ecological sensitivity (0.071). After reviewing related experts, we came up with 5 evaluation indicators and 16 sub-indicators for school garden education service, which are objective evaluation indicators that enable quantitative comparison. Conclusion: In the future, we will validate the socioeconomic values of school garden education services and contribute to revitalizing school gardens by establishing policy alternatives for effective operation and management of school gardens.

Petrological Investigation of the Specimens in School Rock Gardens in Jeonju, Korea (전주시 학교 암석원에 전시된 표품에 대한 암석학적 고찰)

  • The effective teaching of Earth Science in the classroom should be augmented by field studies of rocks and minerals in a competently designed school rock garden(SRG). The displayed specimens must be correctly identified, labeled and esthetically evaluated. SRG is more than a general garden with just landscaping and it should provide students with freedom of conducting independent inquiries. The composition of the selected specimens should be representative of the bedrocks of region as well as of Korea in general. There are 130 schools in Jeonju-city and 35 (26.9%) have established rock gardens. There is a pressing demand for more gardens and number of display samples in school. The existing displays need improvement because some samples are not correctly identified and labeled. In addition, there is a duplication of rock types as well as lack of important rock types. The number and composition of the displayed rocks and minerals should be related to the school curriculum and reflect representative bedrocks of Jeonju-city and region.

The Architectural Features of French Picturesque Gardens and Fabriques in the 18th Century (18세기 프랑스 픽처레스크 정원과 파브리크 건축 특성)

  • Although small but eye-catching outdoor constructions are generally called follies in contemporary architecture, French landscape researchers found different features of the fabrique, which they called separately from the folly. Unlike the 18th-century English gardens, in which the landscape itself was emphasized more than decorative structures in it, French fabriques actively made the atmosphere of picturesque gardens. In this background, this paper, from the architectural point of view, studied the 18th-century garden theories in both Britain and France, which might influence the formation of the fabrique. Then, it tried to analyze the features of French major picturesque gardens and their fabriques, relating them to painting, drama, and culture. In conclusion, this study, focusing on the relationship between the garden and its fabriques or follies, compared the different features between the English landscape gardens and the French picturesque ones in the 18th century.

Reviewing the Candidate Types for Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures for Post-2020 Management Related to National Protected Areas System (Post-2020 국가 보호지역 시스템 관리를 위한 기타 효과적인 지역 기반 보전 수단(OECMs) 후보지역 유형 검토)

  • This study aims to systematically review the candidate types for OECMs suitable for domestic conditions in areas related to the Korea Forest Service in order to achieve the goal of establishing the protected areas and OECMs system required by Post-2020 GBF, and to provide basic data for the establishment of the national protected areas system. As a result of the study, the selection criteria for OECMs were presented, and it was found that arboretums·botanical gardens, Natural Recreation Forests, and air holes may correspond to the Candidate Types for OECMs. As a result of evaluating the possible areas for OECMs based on the OECMs selection criteria, in the case of arboretums·botanical gardens, it is judged that only conservation areas can be designated as OECMs, except for areas mainly used by visitors of arboretums·botanical gardens that fall under the BGCI conservation type among national and public arboretums·botanical gardens. However, private and school arboretums·botanical gardens have personal property ownership, so it was judged to have no effective measures to control activities that may adversely affect biodiversity, which showed limitations in designation of OECMs. Natural Recreation Forests was found to meet the OECMs selection criteria. However, private forests have personal property ownership, which limits the designation of OECMs. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the function of in-situ conservation in order to meet the OECMs for private and school arboretums·botanical gardens, and private forests that have personal property ownership. To this end, effective measures are needed to achieve biodiversity conservation outcomes, and it is judged that legal control and corresponding support policies (incentives) are needed. In the case of air holes, for sustainable conservation, the management boundary of air holes should be clearly defined based on the preparation of laws and guidelines related to air holes. In addition, it is judged that it is desirable to designate the competent local forest office as the management authority and conduct periodic detailed surveys of air holes, establish and implement the conservation plans based on those.

  • This study aims to establish the identity of traditional Korean gardens and develop a universal way for overseas Koreans and foreigners to have an appropriate understanding of traditional Korean gardens, as part of efforts to distribute and promote the overseas establishment of traditional Korean gardens. The focus of this study is on developing planning and design guidelines to ensure that traditional Korean gardens have individuality when they are established overseas and on establishing directional rules for planners. Although traditional Korean gardens may vary in form according to their purposes and spatial scales, the most important thing is that they should incorporate emotions that are well-matched with Korean landscapes and that their design language should be easily recognizable and understandable to everyone. The basic spatial types of traditional Korean gardens for overseas establishment, which are presented in this study, include the exhibition(fair) type, the garden type and the park type. These basic types serve as prototypes that correspond to the purposes of the gardens. In consideration of the spatial scale, the exhibition(fair) type is set as the minimum unit for composition, and suggested basic facilities include trees, a well, a pond and an island in the pond, flower beds and fences. The results of this study have significance as basic information for planning and designing traditional Korean gardens for overseas establishment.

Study on Characteristics of 'Private Gardens' in South Korea ('민간정원'의 현황 및 특성 분석)

  • 'Private Garden', is a legal concept that encourages the opening of private gardens to the public. Twenty-five private gardens have registered with the Forest Service since the 2015 policy was enacted. Although it is a positive system in terms of spreading and encouraging garden culture, the exact nature, role, and designation requirements have not been fully discussed. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of 25 private gardens in Korea. The results of the study noted that the southern region occupied a large part of the geographical distribution of the private gardens, which is due to the natural and climatic conditions, the policies of the local governments, and the discretion of public officials. In addition, the gardens are almost all made up of modern gardens; there was only one house garden from the Joseon Dynasty. The owners of the gardens range from their 50s to 80s in age. The gardens were started because the owner believed it was a good endeavor, but many owners felt that it was difficult to manage the enlarged garden and eventually opened it through as a Private Garden in anticipation of receiving economic support. There are also owners who are willing to revitalize the area. In addition, profits are generated from facilities other than the gardens, and some operate related programs to promote the culture of gardening. For a sustainable Private Garden system, it is necessary to check the registration criteria and establish a clear role in the region. There is also a need for further measures for management and marketing. This study is meaningful as basic research on the Private Garden system that is not yet systematic.

A Study of the Conservation Policy and Management Status of Historic Gardens in England - Focused on the National Trust - (영국 역사정원 보전정책과 관리현황에 대한 연구 - 내셔널 트러스트를 중심으로 -)

  • This paper investigates the history, policy and status of the conservation of historic gardens in the National Trust in England and its implications for Korea. It was conducted in three phases as follows: First, related literature data was collected to understand the National Trust and its role in the conservation of historic gardens. Second, The National Trust Policy Papers: Gardens and Landscape Parks in 1996 was reviewed and analyzed into eight categories with a review of 216 gardens and interviews with gardener-in-charge via e-mail. Finally an understanding of the policy for the conservation of historic gardens was formed from the results of the previous phases, and implications were drawn from the integrated analysis guidelines of the policy and status. The key feature of the conservation of the National Trust's historic gardens is that the conservation process has been conducted systematically through acquisition, management, upkeep, advice and so on. Furthermore, the conservation principles are defined in a concise and accessible form. According to their practical conservation process and principles, the results of the National Trust activities are to appreciate the significance of the gardens and act with accountability; integration; managing change; access and participation; and training gardener and partnership. According to the results of its activities under the premise that the purpose of the conservation and the meaning of a garden do not differ significantly among nations, implications for Korea can be primarily suggested by three points as follows: First of all, a flexible approach to change in historic gardens should be managed. In response to inevitable and desirable change, anything that is added or transferred should be recorded for the future as much as possible. Therefore, everything must be recorded and any change should be managed. Second, is to provide sustainable access for the benefit for the people and visitors. The aim of conserving the gardens is for human's to eventually understand that the present generation just borrows the historic gardens before they are passed down. The ensuing implication is that people may enjoy the gardens educationally, aesthetically, and physically, and children can be continuously interested in historic gardens as apart of educating the future generation. Finally, the National Trust educates apprentice gardeners who will maintain the historic gardens and continuously keep the current garden staff up to date with workshops. This is in contrast to the day laborers who work for historic gardens in Korea. In practice, the maintenance of historic gardens is not a simple process. The gardener must understand the past, reflect the present, and prepare for the future. Therefore, gardeners deliver culture from generation to generation.

  • Endocarditis associated with Escherichia coli was diagnosed in a 2-year-old male sea lion (Zalopus californianus). At necropsy, the heart had biventricular dilation with marked attenuation of the apex. Verrucous, grayish-red, vegetative lesions were present in both the aortic and left AV valves. Several discrete hyperemia-rimmed infarcts were noted in the kidneys. (omitted)

Case Study of the Roles and Characteristics of Community Gardens in Four North American Cities (북미 4개 도시 커뮤니티가든 사례조사에 의한 역할과 특성 비교 연구)

  • As urban regeneration and revitalization projects become increasingly popular in Korea, interests in residential environment, landscape improvement and community activities have risen, resulting in increased interest in community garden, a type of urban agriculture. However, the concept of community garden in Korea is yet to be defined apart from the general concept of urban agriculture. Also, any discussion regarding a practical scheme for community gardens remains nascent. Therefore, in order to define and to understand community gardens, and to draw meaningful implications for the community garden research in Korea, this study conducted a preliminary field survey of four North American cities from where the idea of community gardening originates. A total of 166 community gardens in Seattle, New York, Philadelphia and Vancouver were visited during this survey. Four community gardens from each city were selected for further analysis, with particular emphasis on spatial organization and social functions. The results showed that the community gardens in each city perform a diverse array of functions depending on location, type and societal needs. Community gardens in Seattle and Vancouver, which may be classified as 'uptown,' focused on their roles as fields of 'community participation.' Those in New York and Philadelphia, which are classified as 'downtown,' emphasized their function in 'urban beautification.' This study demonstrates that the community gardens in North America serve their roles as urban amenities and multi-functional public spaces for the entire local population. The implication of the results is that considerations for the social roles the community gardens serve and the spatial elements that allow the space to perform such functions are necessary for the further developments in the community garden research in Korea.
