  • Li-AGICs as a anode of secondary battery were synthesized by high-pressure method as a function of the Li-contents. The characteristics of these prepared compounds were determined from the studies with X-ray diffraction method, UV/VIS spectrophotometric and differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) analysis. From the results of X-ray diffraction, it was found that the lower stage intercalation compounds were formed with increase of Li-contents. The mixed stages in these compounds were also observed. In the case of the $Li_{30wt%}$-AGIC, the compounds in the stage 1 structure were formed predominantly, but the structure of only pure stage 1 for structural defect of artificial graphite is not observed. According to UV/VIS spectrophotometric analysis, $Li_{30wt%}$-AGIC shows distinguishable energy state spectrum with the position of $R(%)_{min}$ values, but the characteristic spectra of almost all Li-AGICs are not observed. The enthalpy and entropy changes of the compounds can be obtained from the differential scanning calorimetric analysis results. From the results, it was found that exothermic and endothermic reactions of Li-AGICs are related to thermal stability of lithium between artificial graphite layers.

  • The thermal properties of wood flour, Hwangto, and maleated polyethylene (MAPE) reinforced HDPE composites were investigated in this study. The thermal behavior of reinforced wood polymer composites was characterized by means of thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analyses. Hwangto and MAPE were used as an inorganic filler and a coupling agent, respectively. According to TGA analysis, the increase of wood flour level increased the thermal degradation of composites in the early stage, but decreased in the late stage. On the other hand, Hwangto reinforced composites showed the higher thermal stability than virgin HDPE, from the determination of differential peak temperature ($DT_p$). Decomposition temperature of wood flour and/or Hwangto reinforced composites increased with increase of heating rate. From DSC analysis, melting temperature of reinforced composites little bit increased with the addition of wood flour or Hwangto. As the loading of wood flour or Hwangto to HDPE increased, overall enthalpy decreased. It showed that wood flour and Hwangto absorbed more heat energy for melting the reinforced composites. Hwangto reinforced composites required more heat energy than wood flour reinforced composites and virgin HDPE. Coupling agent gave no significant effect on the thermal properties of composites. Thermal analyses indicate that composites with Hwangto are more thermally stable than those without Hwangto.

  • The cure kinetics of a bisphenol A epoxy resin and polyoxypropylene diamine curing agent system are investigated in both dynamic and isothermal conditions by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In dynamic experiments, the shift of exothermic peaks obtained at different heating rates is used to obtain activation energy of overall cure reaction based on the methods of Ozawa and Kissinger. Isothermal DSC data at different temperatures are fitted to an autocatalytic Kamal kinetic model. The kinetic model is in a good agreement with the experimental data in the initial stage of cure. A diffusion effect is incorporated to describe the later stage of cure, predicting the cure kinetics over the whole range of curing process. Also, dynamic mechanical analysis is performed to evaluate the storage modulus and average molecular weight between crosslinkages.

  • The investigations of the coated-particles of nuclear fuel samples are carried out in three stages: front-end, irradiation in the reactor core, and post-irradiation examination. The front-end stage is the initial analysis of the failures rates of produced samples before they are placed in the reactor core. The purpose of the verification is to prepare the particles for an experiment that will determine the degree of damage to the coated particles at each stage. Before starting experiments with the samples, they must be properly prepared. Polishing the samples in order to uncover the inner layers is an important, initial experimental step. The authors of this paper used a novel way to prepare samples for testing - by applying an ion polisher. Mechanical polishing used frequently for sample preparations generates additional mechanical damages in the studied fuel particle, thus directly affecting the experimental results. The polishing methods were compared for three different coated particles using diagnostic methods such as Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that the ion polishing method is better because the level of interference with the structures of the individual layers of the tested samples is much lower than with the mechanical method. The same technique is used for the fuel particles undergone ion implantation simulating radiation damage that can occur in the reactor core.

  • Scanning worm increases network traffic load and result in severe network congestion because it is a self-replicating worm and send copies of itself to a number of hosts through the Internet. So an early detection system which can automatically detect scanning worms is needed to protect network from those attacks. Although many studies are conducted to detect scanning worms, most of them are focusing on the method using packet header information. The method using packet header information has long detection delay since it must examine the header information of all packets entering or leaving the network. Therefore we propose an algorithm to detect scanning worms using network traffic characteristics such as variance of traffic volume, differentiated traffic volume, mean of differentiated traffic volume, and product of mean traffic volume and mean of differentiated traffic volume. We verified the proposed algorithm by analyzing the normal traffic captured in the real network and the worm traffic generated by simulator. The proposed algorithm can detect CodeRed and Slammer which are not detected by existing algorithm. In addition, all worms were detected in early stage: Slammer was detected in 4 seconds and CodeRed and Witty were detected in 11 seconds.

  • Structural changes of the vitelline envelopes during oogenesis of a polychaete, Nectoneanthes oxypoda, were examined with a scanning electron micrscope. Oocytes grow in the same coelomic fluid to the final stage, but the surface appears to change in the structure during oogenesis. Projections, which were identified to be microvilli, change in shape, number and size. Short microvilli, which cover the surface of oocyte of $33{\mu}m$ diameter densely, grow in length, reaching a maximum at the stage of $73{\mu}m$. The number of microvilli increases with the stages of oogenesis, reaching a plateau at the stage of $82{\mu}m$. The observations suggest that control of material transport including yolk precursor proteins may be correlated with the structural changes in the microvilli.

  • Nano-stages are used in many ultra-precision systems, such as scanning probe microscope(SPM), optical fiber aligners, ultra-precision cutting, measuring systems, and optical systems. It is difficult to find the solutions because the performances and characteristics of nano-scale motion stage are determined by various factors. To understand effects of nano-scale motion stage, three types of hinge structures were designed and manufactured. Each hinge structures were designed following with the results of simulation. And from the result of experiments, hysteresis, displacement, and accuracy were compared with each hinge structures.

  • This paper proposes an efficient image encryption scheme based on quintuple encryption using two chaotic maps. The encryption process is realized with quintuple encryption by calling the encrypt(E) and decrypt(D) functions five times with five different keys in the form EDEEE. The decryption process is accomplished in the reverse direction by invoking the encrypt and decrypt functions in the form DDDED. The keys for the quintuple encryption/decryption processes are generated by using a Tent map. The chaotic values for the encrypt/decrypt operations are generated by using a Gumowski-Mira map. The encrypt function E is composed of three stages: permutation, pixel value rotation and diffusion. The permutation stage scrambles all the rows and columns to chaotically generated positions. This stage reduces the correlation radically among the neighboring pixels. The pixel value rotation stage circularly rotates all the pixels either left or right, and the amount of rotation is based on chaotic values. The last stage performs the diffusion four times by scanning the image in four different directions: Horizontally, Vertically, Principal diagonally and Secondary diagonally. Each of the four diffusion steps performs the diffusion in two directions (forward and backward) with two previously diffused pixels and two chaotic values. This stage ensures the resistance against the differential attacks. The security and performance of the proposed method is investigated thoroughly by using key space, statistical, differential, entropy and performance analysis. The experimental results confirm that the proposed scheme is computationally fast with security intact.

  • In precision laser microfabrication, focusing is essential to acquire good machining precision and uniform machining quality. If it does not perform, laser machining cannot be realized. So, confocal scanning method with high depth resolution is used for focus detection technique. This paper is concerned with a procedure for design, analysis and performance test of an autofocus fine actuating stage, which is composed of flexure-hinge type lever mechanism and piezoelectric actuator. Through series of analytical design, the stage is simplified as a rigid bodies(lever and main body) and springs(flexure hinges). The simplified model was applied to determine the dimension of flexure hinges and lever. After structural analysis confirmed design requirement, an actual stage was made and verified through an experiment on the static and dynamic characteristics(maximum stroke and 1st natural frequency). The fabricated stage was satisfied with the design requirement.
