  • Purpose: Tc-99m MDP bone scan was performed to evaluate a generalized bone pain in a 24-year-old male chronic myelogenous leukemia patient who received bone marrow transplantation at 7 months ago. The patient had received large amounts of blood transfusion for managing symptoms related to anemia. Bone scan revealed substantial splenic tracer uptake. Magnetic resonance image and laboratory evidence of hemochromatosis suggests that the presence of large quantities of iron in the spleen of this patient may have been responsible for the splenic uptake of the bone scanning agent. The authors report a case of splenic hemochromatosis incidentally found on Tc-99m MDP bone scan.

  • The physico-chemical characteristics by bleaching treatments were assessed by several instrumental analyses such as surface morphology, chemical structural change, color change as well as tensile strength. The change of morphological characteristic was observed through scanning electron microscope(SEM). The observation of the fine structure on hair surface by SEM showed the bleached hair had much damaged to hair cuticle, and some of cuticle surface were worn away. To investigate the chemical structural changes in hair keratin, the cross-sections of hair samples were directly analysed using Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy(FT-IRM). The results showed the cysteic acid S=O band intensity was distinctively increased by performing the bleaching treatment. The cleavage of cystine was appeared to proceed primarily through the sulfur-sulfur (-S-S-) fission whereby cysteic acid was formed as a principal oxidation products. The distribution of amide I band in hair keratin was determined by attenuated total reflectance(ATR) FT-IR mapping image. The results showed that the outer side of hair cortex was more damaged than the inner side of the hair cortex. Also, during chemical bleaching of the hair with alkaline peroxide, the hair was turned to reddish yellow due to the oxidative degradation of eumelanin. This means the eumelanin is more unstable than pheomelanin in chemical oxidation. With bleaching, the tensile strength was also reduced as a results of the chemical oxidation.

  • This paper presents an algorithm that automatically extracts buildings among many different features on the earth surface by fusing LIDAR data with panchromatic aerial images. The proposed algorithm consists of three stages such as point level process, polygon level process, parameter space level process. At the first stage, we eliminate gross errors and apply a local maxima filter to detect building candidate points from the raw laser scanning data. After then, a grouping procedure is performed for segmenting raw LIDAR data and the segmented LIDAR data is polygonized by the encasing polygon algorithm developed in the research. At the second stage, we eliminate non-building polygons using several constraints such as area and circularity. At the last stage, all the polygons generated at the second stage are projected onto the aerial stereo images through collinearity condition equations. Finally, we fuse the projected encasing polygons with edges detected by image processing for refining the building segments. The experimental results showed that the RMSEs of building corners in X, Y and Z were ${\pm}$8.1cm, ${\pm}$24.7cm, ${\pm}$35.9cm, respectively.

  • Soluble polyaniline was synthesized by attaching titanium isoproxide ($Ti(OPr)_4$) to the amine group of the aniline. Approximately 1 to 1 molar ratio of aniline and $Ti(OPr)_4$ was mixed and polymerized with ammonium persulfate. The FTIR result showed clear difference between $TiO_2$-aniline composite ($TiO_2An$) and $TiO_2$-polyaniline composite ($TiO_2PAn$). Although the $TiO_2An$ had negligible UV-visible absorption, the $TiO_2PAn$ showed strong absorption in the UV-visible region. Photoluminescence (PL) peaks of $TiO_2An$ were shifted toward red with the reduction of the excitation energy, which could be due to the multiple emission centers. The luminescence peak shift stopped at 501 nm. The PL spectra of $TiO_2PAn$ exhibited three emission peaks at 2.88 eV (430 nm), 2.48 eV (501 nm) and 2.22 eV (558 nm). The new emission center (2.22 eV) was observed after polymerization. Field emission scanning electron microscope image showed crack-free composite film.

  • The characteristic analysis of fly ash generated from a fired power plant using bunker-C oil has been investigated. Ash size distribution by an optical microscopy with image processing technique, morphological shape by a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and microscope, chemical composition by the inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry(ICP), and resistivity measurement as a function of temperature and moisture content by the resistivity meter are performed. A study of physical, chemical and electrical characteristics of bunker-C fly ash plays an important role of improving the performance of an electrostatic precipitator and protecting air pollution. The samples of bunker-C fly ash for analysis were collected from the electrostatic precipitator hopper of Ulsan Power Plant Unit 1 and Pusan Power Plant Unit 1. Mass median diameter(MMD) of bunker-C fly ash was measured 12.7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, while MMD of fly ash generated from the mixture of bunker-C oil(40%) and domestic anthracitic coal(60%) was 25.7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The morphological structure of bunker-C fly ash consisted of fine particles of non-spherical shape. The primary chemical components of bunker-C fly ash were composed of SiO2(2.36%), Al2O3(4.91%), Fe2O3(14.33%) and C(11.84%). Resistivity of bunker-C fly ash was found to be increased with increasing temperature at the range of 100~15$0^{\circ}C$ and was measured 103~104 ohm-cm.

  • In this paper, the Finite-Difference Time-Domain(FDTD) modeling method of the Korean human head is introduced to calculate electromagnetic energy absorption for the human head by mobile phones. After MRI scanning data is obtained, 2 dimensional(2D) segmentation is done from the 2D MRI image data by the semi-automatic method. Then, 3D dense segmentation data with $1mm\times1mm\times1mm$ is constructed from the 2D segmentation data. Using the 3D segmentation data, coarse FDTD models of human head that is tilted arbitrarily to model the condition of tilted usage of mobile phone.

  • Thin films of $BaTiO_3$ system were prepared by radio frequency(rf)/dc magnetron sputtering method. We have investigated crystal structure, surface morphology and PTCR(positive-temperature coefficient of resistance) characteristics of the specimen depending on second heat-treatment temperatures. Second heat treatments of the specimen were performed in the temperature range of 400 to $1350^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction patterns of $BaTiO_3$ thin films show that the specimen heat treated below $600^{\circ}C$ is an amorphous phase and the one heat treated above $1100^{\circ}C$ forms a poly-crystallization. In the specimen heat-treated at $1300^{\circ}C$, a lattice constant ratio (c/a) was 1.188. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) image of $BaTiO_3$ thin films of the specimen heat treated in between 900 and $1100^{\circ}C}$ shows a grain growth. At $1100^{\circ}C$, the specimen stops grain-growing and becomes a poly-crystallization.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate effects of the number of acquisitions (NEX) on signal-to-noise (SNR) and artifacts in SENSE parallel imaging of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). 3.0T MR System, 8 Channel sensitivity encoding (SENSE) head coils were used along with an in-vivo phantom. Reference sequence of 3D fast field echo (FFE) was consisted of NEX values of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12. The T2 turbo spin echo (TSE) sequence used for exams achieved SENSE factors of 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.5, 2.8, 3.0, 3.2, 3.5, 3.8 and 4.0. Exams were conducted five times for each SENSE factor to measure signal intensity of the object, the posterior phase-encode direction and frequency direction. And SNR was calculated using mean values. SENSE artifacts were identified as background signal intensity in the phase-encoded direction using MRIcro. It was found that SNR increased but SENSE artifacts reduced with NEX of 4, 8 and 12 when the NEX increased in reference scan. It is therefore concluded that image quality can be improved with NEX of 4, 8 and 12 for reference scanning.

  • In this study, the non-destructive computed tomography was adopted to observe the density profile of the needle-punched Carbon/Carbon(C/C) composites nozzle throat. The density profile of C/C was evaluated within ${\pm}0.01g/cm^3$ with 98.74% confidence when the correction of the image and high signal-to-noise ratio were achieved by the optimization of the beam hardening, the electrical noise and the scattered X-ray. The density variation of C/C with the computed tomography was in good agreement with the results obtained by the water immersion method and the observation with scanning electron microscope.

  • Objective : To evaluate the role of cranial sonography and computed tomography in the diagnosis of neonatal intracranial hemorrhage and hypoxic-ischemic injury in an Indian set-up. Methods : The study included 100 neonates who underwent cranial sonography and computed tomography (CT) in the first month of life for suspected intracranial ischemia and hemorrhage. Two observers rated the images for possible intracranial lesions and a kappa statistic for interobserver agreement was calculated. Results : There was no significant difference in the kappa values of CT and ultrasonography (USG) for the diagnosis of germinal matrix hemorrhage/intraventricular hemorrhage (GMH/IVH) and periventricular leucomalacia (PVL) and both showed good interobserver agreement. USG, however detected more cases of GMH/IVH (24 cases) and PVL (19) cases than CT (22 cases and 16 cases of IVH and PVL, respectively). CT had significantly better interobserver agreement for the diagnosis of hypoxic ischemic injury (HII) in term infants and also detected more cases (33) as compared to USG (18). CT also detected 6 cases of extraaxial hemorrhages as compared to 1 detected by USG. Conclusion : USG is better modality for imaging preterm neonates with suspected IVH or PVL. However, USG is unreliable in the imaging of term newborns with suspected HII where CT or magnetic resonance image scan is a better modality.
