  • In this study, we developed three dimensional FDG brain PET and MRI coregistration technique. The boundaries of the head in PET and MRI were segmented using sinogram of emission PET scan and T1-weighted MRI. We registered both boundaries by minimizing the mean Euclidean distance of those. To display the registered PET and MRI simultaneously, we used weighted normalization method and interleaving method.

  • Root canal anatomy is complex, and the recognition of anatomic variations could be a challenge for clinicians. This case report describes the importance of cone beam computed tomographyic (CBCT) imaging during endodontic treatment. A 23 year old woman was referred by her general dental practitioner with the chief complaint of spontaneous pain in her right posterior maxilla. From the clinical and radiographic findings, a diagnosis of symptomatic irreversible pulpitis was made and endodontic treatment was suggested to the patient. The patient underwent CBCT examination, and CBCT scan slices revealed seven canals: three mesiobuccal (MB1, MB2, and MB3), two distobuccal (DB1 and DB2), and two palatal (P1 and P2). Canals were successfully treated with reciprocating files and filled using single-cone filling technique. Precise knowledge of root canal morphology and its variation is important during root canal treatment. CBCT examination is an excellent tool for identifying and managing these complex root canal systems.

  • Magnetic Resonance Image represents three-dimensional diagnostic imaging technique using both nuclear magnetic resonance phenomenon and computer. Compared with computed tomography (CT), MRI have advantages harmless to patient's body, three-dimensional image with high resolution and disadvantages long data acquisition time because of long T1 relaxation time, relatively low signal to noise ratio, high cost of setting, also. As physiologic motion of tissue results in motion ghost in MRI, high 2.0Tesla make improve low signal to noise ratio. This study have aim to improve image quality with controling motion ghost of tissue. Supposing a moving pixel in constant frequency, one pixel make two ghosts which are same size and different anti-phase. So, this study will show adjust parameter on locational control of motion ghost. Author made moving phantom replaced by respiratory movement of human, researched change of motion frequency, FOV by location shift, and them decided optimal FOV (field of view). The results are as follows: 1. The frequency content of the motion determines how far the image always appear in phase-encoding direction, the morphology of the ghost image is characteristic of the direction of the motion and its amplitude. 2. Double FOV of fixed signal object for locational control of motion ghost is recommended. Decreasement of spatial resolution by increasing FOV can compensate on increasing of matrix in spite of scan time increasement.

  • In this study, calcium titanate $(CaTiO_3)$ gel was prepared by mixing calcium nitrate and titanium isopropoxide in 2-methoxy-ethanol. $CaTiO_3$ gel was single-layer coated on Ti-6Al-4V using a sol-gel dip-coating technique. The coating was calcined at $750^{\circ}C$ in air by utilizing a very slow heating rate of $2^{\circ}C/min$. The crystalline phases of the coating were characterized by x-ray diffraction using a slow scan rate of $1^{\circ}/min$. The morphology of the coating was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The corrosion behavior of Ti-6Al-4V samples coated with $CaTiO_3$ films were tested in an artificial saliva solution by potentiodynamic polarization and were quantified by the Tafel extrapolation method. The electrochemical parameters showed a considerable increase in the corrosion resistance for the $CaTiO_3$-coated Ti-6Al-4V samples compared to bare substrates.

  • The study aims to develope techniques for generating digital elevation model(DEM) from IRS-1C PAN stereo image data. The bundle adjustment technique was used to determine the satellite exterior orientation parameters as a function of along-track lines. The first degree of polynomial was selected as a function of satellite attitude and position for each scan line. To evaluate the DEM and orthoimage generated, the resulted three dimensional coordinates of the 16 elevation points were computed with the map coordinates. The elevation test showed that root mean square errors of the DEM elevation was about $\pm{16.66m}$ meters.

  • Total thyroidectomy has been advocated as the treatment of choice for most well differentiated thyroid carcinomas. Many surgeons have an aversion to total thyroidectomy, however, because of an allegedly high frequency of complications as compared with those resulting from other operation methods. In this report we reviewed our experience with 37 consecutive total thyroidectomy(January 1995 to December 1996). The clinical features are similar to other studies. The sex ratio is 1 : 3.1(M : F), third decade occupies 33% of cases. The anterior neck mass is the most frequent symptom(95%). In the duration of symptom, 35% of patients was within 3 months. Thirty five cases are cancer, and two cases are Hashimoto's thyroditis. The papillary carcinoma is the most common pathologic type(86%). Total thyroidectomy was done in 20 cases, and total thyroidectomy with modified neck dissection was done in 17 cases. The five postoperative complications occurred in 3 patients among 37 patients: postoperative bleeding in 1, transient hoarseness in 2, transient hypoparathyroidism in 2. Thirty four cases received $I^{131}$ scan and therapy, two cases received thyroid hormone replacement, and one case received chemotherapy. We think that total thyroidectomy can be done without additional risk compared with other thyroid operation methods, with meticulous and careful surgical technique.

  • The effects of an organic additive, naphthalene trisulfonic acid (NTSA), contained in the nickel sulfamate bath on the surface properties of the electrodeposited nickel layer were investigated through electrochemical technique, x-ray diffraction analysis, and microscopic observation. The addition of NTSA facilitated the oxidation process of electrodeposited nickel layer during anodic scan and also increased the hardness and internal stress of the nickel film as the applied current density became higher. It seems that NTSA modulated the deposit structure during electrodeposition and so induced higher distribution of (110) orientation with respect to (200). With the increase of the NTSA in the bath, nickel layer was formed in small grain size, which resulted in enhanced surface evenness and brightness.

  • Electrochemical capacitors are becoming attractive energy storage systems particularly for applications involving high power requirements such as hybrid systems consisting of batteries and electrochemical capacitors for electric vehicle propulsion. A new type electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) was constructed by using carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and DAAQ(1,5-diaminoanthraquinone) electrode. Carbonaceous materials are found in variety forms such as graphite, diamond, carbon fibers etc. While all the carbon nanofibers include impurities such as amorphous carbon, nanoparticles, catalytic metals and incompletely grown carbons. We have eliminated of Ni particles and some carbonaceous particles in nitric acid. Nitric acid treated CNFs could be covered with very thin DAAQ oligomer from the results of CV and TG analyses and SEM images. DAAQ oligomer film exhibited a specific capacity as 45-50 Ah/kg in 4M $H_2SO_4$. We established Process Parameters of the technique for the formation of nano-structured materials. Furthermore, improved the capacitive properties of the nano structured CNFs electrodes using controlled solution chemistry. As a result, CNFs coated by DAAQ composite electrode showed relatively good electrochemical behaviors in acidic electrolyte system with respect to specific capacity and scan rate dependency.

  • The structure of thiamphenicol, one of the congeners of chloramphenicol which is a well-known antibiotic, has been determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction techniques. The crystal structure was determined using diffractometer data obtained by the $2{\theta}:{\omega}$ scan technique with $MoK{\alpha}$ radiation from a crystal having space group symmetry $P2_{1}2_{1}2_{1}$, and unit cell parameters a = 5.779, b = 15.292 and c = 17.322 ${\AA}$ . The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by least squares to an R = 0.070 for the 2116 reflections. The overall V-shaped conformation of thiamphenicol revealed in this study is consistent with those from the crystallographic studies and the proposed models from the theoretical and nmr studies of chloramphenicol. However there is no intramolecular hydrogen bond and the propanediol moiety is fully extended in the thiamphenicol molecule, while the crystal structures of chloramphenicol show the existence of the hydrogen bond between the two hydroxyl groups of the propanediol moiety forming an acyclic ring. All of the thiamphenicol molecules in the crystal are linked by a threedimensional hydrogen bonding network.

  • Cholesteryl aniline ($C_{33}H_{51}N$) is monoclinic, space group $P2_1$, with a = 9.020(3), b = 6.000(1), c = 27.130(9)${\AA},\;{\beta} = 98.22(2)^{\circ}$, Z = 2, Dc = 1.06 g/cm$^3$ and Dm = 1.04 g/cm$^3$. A diffraction data set was collected with Mo-$K_{\alpha}$ radiation (${\lambda} = 0.7107 {\AA}$) on a diffractometer with a graphite monochromator to a maximum 2${\theta}$ value of 50$^{\circ}$, by the ${\omega}-2{\theta}$ scan technique. The coordinates of the non-hydrogen atoms and their anisotropic temperature factors were refined by full-matrix least-squares methods to final R of 0.058. In cholesteryl group, bond distances were normal except in tail part, where high thermal vibration resulted in apparent shortening of the C-C distances. The crystal structure consists of bilayers of thickness $d_{001} = 27.13 {\AA}$, in each of which there is the tail to tail arrangement of molecules aligned in the unit cell with their long axes approximately parallel to the [104] axis. The two halves of the double layer are related to each other by the screw axis.
