  • The present paper describes the scale effect correction methods for scaled NREL Phase VI wind turbines by using CFD[computational fluid dynamics). For the corrections of wind turbine scale effect, various researches on the helicopter rotor scale effect were investigated and the feasibility study of the methods was performed to correct wind turbine scale effect. The present paper also introduces scale effect correction methods based on two dimensional lift slope. In order to test the present method, performance analyses of NREL Phase VI wind turbines under various scale conditions were carried out and new correction method was applied. Granting that the new correction method is valid only above Reynolds No. 100,000, it showed reasonable agreement between model and full scale wind turbines in the linear torque region.

  • The evaluation of a zonal RANS-LES approach is documented for the prediction of broadband noise generated by the flow past unmodified and serrated airfoil trailing edges at a high Reynolds number. A multi-domain decomposition is considered, where the acoustic sources are resolved with a LES sub-domain embedded in the RANS domain. A stochastic vortex method is used to generate synthetic turbulent perturbations at the RANS-LES interface. The simulations are performed with a general-purpose unstructured control-volume code FLUENT. The far-field noise is calculated using the aeroacoustic analogy of Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings. The results of the simulation are validated through the full-scaled wind turbine acoustic measurements. It is found that the present approach is adequate for predicting noise radiation of serrated trailing edge flow for low noise rotor system.

  • In order to identify positive or negative effect of seawall on wind turbine, a wind tunnel experiment has been conducted with a 1/100 scaled-down model of Goonsan wind farm which is located in West coast along seawall. Wind speedup due to the slope of seawall contributed to about 3% increment of area-averaged wind speed on rotor-plane of a wind turbine which is anticipated to augment wind power generation. From the turbulence measurement and flow visualization, it was confirmed that there would be no negative effect due to flow separation because its influence is confined below wind turbine blades' sweeping height.

  • A numerical simulation on the wake flow of a wind turbine which is a scaled version of a multi-megawatt wind turbine has been performed. Two different inlet conditions of averaged wind speed including one below and one above the rated wind speed were used in the simulation. Steady-state pitch angles of the blade associated with the two averaged wind speeds were imposed for the simulation. The steady state analysis based on the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the method of frame motion were used for the simulation to find the torque of the rotor and the wake field behind the wind turbine. The simulation results were compared with the results obtained from the wind tunnel testing. From comparisons, it was found that the simulation results on the turbine power are pretty close to the experimental values. Also, the wake results were relatively close to the experimental results but there existed some discrepancy in the shape of velocity deficit. The reason for the discrepancy is considered due to the steady state solution with the frame motion method used in the simulation. However, the method is considered useful for solutions with much reduced calculation time and reasonably good accuracy compared to the transient analysis.

  • This paper describes the aeroelastic stability test of the small-scaled 'Next-Generation Blade(NRSB)' with NRSH (Next-Generation Hub System) and HCTH hingeless hub system in hover and forward flight conditions. Excitation tests of rotor system installed in GSRTS(General Small-scale Rotor Test System) at KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) were tarried out to get lead-lag damping ratio of blades with flexures as hub flexure. MBA(Moving Block Analysis) technique was used for the estimation of lead-lag damping ratio. First, NRSB-1F blades with HCTH hub system, Then NRSB-1F with NRSH hub system were tested. Second, NRSB-2F blades with NRSH hub system were tested. Tests were done on the ground and in the wind tunnel according to the test conditions of hover and forward flight, respectively. Non-rotating natural frequencies, non-rotating damping ratios and rotating natural frequencies were showed similar level fir each cases. Estimated damping ratios of NRSB-1F, NRSB-2F with HCTH and NRSH were above 0.5%, and damping ratio increased by collective pitch angle increasement. Furthermore damping ratios of NRSB-2F were higher than damping ratios of NRSB-1F in high pitch angle. It was confirmed that the blade design for noise reduction would give observable improvement in aeroelastic stability compared to paddle blade and NRSB-1F design.

  • The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is to calculate and examine a 500 kW Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) power performance and compare to calculation data(BEM method) from Delft University. The experimental approach, which has been the main method of investigation, appears to be reaching its limits, the cost increasing relate with the size of wind turbines. Hence, the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques and Navier-Stokes Solvers are considered a very serious contender. We has used the CFD software package CFX-TASC flow as a modeling tool to predict the power performance of a wind turbine on the basis of its geometry and operating data. The wind turbine with 40m diameters rotor, it was scaled to compare with the calculation data from delft university. The HAWT, which has eight-rpm variations are investigated respectively. The pitch angle is $+0.5^{\circ}$ and wind speed is fixed at 5m/s. The tip speed ratio (TSR) of the HAWT ranging from 2.89 to 9.63.

  • Flow through a scaled horizontal axis marine current turbine was numerically simulated after validation and the turbine design was optimized. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Ansys-CFX 16.1 for numerical modeling, an in-house blade element momentum (BEM) code for analytical modeling and an in-house surrogate-based optimization (SBO) code were used to find an optimal turbine design. The blade-pitch angle (${\theta}$) and the number of rotor blades (NR) were taken as design variables. A single objective optimization approach was utilized in the present work. The defined objective function was the turbine's power coefficient ($C_P$). A $3{\times}3$ full-factorial sampling technique was used to define the sample space. This sampling technique gave different turbine designs, which were further evaluated for the objective function by solving the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS). Finally, the SBO technique with search algorithm produced an optimal design. It is found that the optimal design has improved the objective function by 26.5%. This article presents the solution approach, analysis of the turbine flow field and the predictability of various surrogate based techniques.
