  • The low-rise buildings with gable roofs are commonly used in a number of industries. In order to study the characteristics of peak external pressure coefficient on low-rise buildings with gable roofs, wind-tunnel test have been carried out. Wind-induced pressures were measured simultaneously at many points on wind-pressure models, typical of simple low-rise buildings with gable roofs, which have seven different roof slope with constant width(D), height(H), and length(D). The pressure measurements were made in one kind of turbulent boundary layer, which simulated the natural winds over typical suburban terrains at a geometric scale of 1/150. The results indicate that peak external pressure coefficient on the roof and wall edges were increased. The results compared with wind standard of KBC-2005 and standards of various nations. The comparative resultant, experimental result appeared very similar at AIJ-2004. But the results were somewhat larger then wind standard of KBC-2005.

  • Traditional trip tables are estimated through large-scale surveys such as household survey, roadside interviews, and license Plate matching. These methods are, however, expensive and time consuming. This paper presents two origin-destination (OD) trip matrix estimation methods from link traffic counts in stochastic assignment, which contains perceived errors of drivers for alternatives. The methods are formulated based on the relation between link flows and OD demands in logit formula. The first method can be expressed to minimize the difference between observed link flows and estimated flows, derived from traffic assignment and be solved by gradient method. The second method can be formulated based on dynamic process, which nay describe the daily movement patterns of drivers and be solved by a recursive equation. A numerical example is used for assessing the methods, and shows the performances and properties of the models.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the sociodemographic and health characteristics on the out-of-pocket health spending of the individuals aged 20 and older in Korea. Methods : We used the data from the 2001 National Public Health and Nutrition Survey. The final sample size was 26,154 persons. Multiple linear regression models were used according to the age groups, that is, one model was used for those people under the age of sixty-five and the other was used for those people aged sixty-five and older. In these analyses, the expenditures were transformed to a logarithmic scale to reduce the skewness of the results. Results : Out-of-pocket health expenditures for those people under the age of 65 averaged 14,800 won per month, whereas expenditures for those people aged 65 and older averaged 27,200 won per month. In the regression analysis, the insurance type, resident area, self-reported health status, acute or chronic condition and bed-disability days were the statistically significant determinants for both age groups. Gender and age were statistically significant determinants only for the non-elderly. Conclusions : The findings from this study show that the mean out-of-pocket health expenditures varied according to the age groups and also several diverse characteristics. Thus, policymakers should consider the out-of-pocket health expenditure differential between the elderly and non-elderly persons. Improvement of the insurance coverage for the economically vulnerable subgroups that were identified in this study should be carefully considered. In addition, it is necessary to assess the impact of out-of-pocket spending on the peoples' health care utilization.

  • The PWR Nuclear Fuel assembly consists of more than 250 fuel rods that are supported by leaf springs in the cells of more than 10 Spacer Grids (SG) along the rod length. Since it is not easy to conduct mechanical tests on a full-scale model basis, the small-scaled rod bundle $(5\times5)$ which is called partial fuel assembly is generally used for various performance tests during the development stage. As one of the small-scaled tests, a flow test should be carried out in order to verify the performance of the spacer grid to obtain the Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV) characteristics of the scaled fuel assembly over the specified flow range. A vibration test should be also performed to obtain the modal parameters of the assembly prior to the flow test. In this study, we want to develop the estimation procedure of the damping ratio for the scaled test assembly. For the damping factor of the partial fuel assembly and the grid cage at the first vibration mode, as one of the vibration tests, a so-called pluck testing has been performed in air as a preliminary test prior to in-flow damping measurement test. Logarithmic decrement method is used for calculation of the damping ratio. Estimated damping ratio of the partial fuel assembly is about $0.7\%$ with reasonable error of $2\%$ for the previous results. Nonlinear behavior of the partial fuel assembly might be stem mainly from the rod-grid support configuration.

  • Experimental model studies were carried out to evaluate the end condition for drilled shafts by applying elastic impact on the top of the shaft, which is one of the various methods using stress waves. Typical impact responses corresponding to the various end conditions including free, fixed, rock-socketed, and soft-bottom with good and poor side contact conditions, were investigated. In order to simulate these renditions, mock-up shaft models made of cement mortar were used. Small-scale laboratory experiments were also performed, and field tests were carried out for the shafts that were socketed into weathered rock. It is found that the rock-socketed condition and depth of penetration into rock ran be identified from the reflection at the interface between the soil and rock in the waveform. The soft bottom rendition can be identified, only when the side contact between shaft and surrounding rock is poor, whereas it cannot be identified when the side contact is good because the waveform is similar to that of fixed end rendition.

  • 3D buildings are the most prominent feature comprising urban scene. A few of mega-cities in the globe are virtually reconstructed in photo-realistic 3D models, which becomes accessible by the public through the state-of-the-art online mapping services. A lot of research efforts have been made to develop automatic reconstruction technique of large-scale 3D building models from remotely sensed data. However, existing methods still produce irregular building polygons due to errors induced partly by uncalibrated sensor system, scene complexity and partly inappropriate sensor resolution to observed object scales. Thus, a geometric regularization technique is urgently required to rectify such irregular building polygons that are quickly captured from low sensory data. This paper aims to develop a new method for regularizing noise building outlines extracted from airborne LiDAR data, and to evaluate its performance in comparison with existing methods. These include Douglas-Peucker's polyline simplication, total least-squared adjustment, model hypothesis-verification, and rule-based rectification. Based on Minimum Description Length (MDL) principal, a new objective function, Geometric Minimum Description Length (GMDL), to regularize geometric noises is introduced to enhance the repetition of identical line directionality, regular angle transition and to minimize the number of vertices used. After generating hypothetical regularized models, a global optimum of the geometric regularity is achieved by verifying the entire solution space. A comparative evaluation of the proposed geometric regulator is conducted using both simulated and real building vectors with various levels of noise. The results show that the GMDL outperforms the selected existing algorithms at the most of noise levels.

  • This study introduces an automatic image matching algorithm that can be applied for the scale different image pairs consisting of the satellite pushbroom images and the aerial frame images. The proposed method is based on several image processing techniques such as pre-processing, filtering, edge thinning, interest point extraction, and key-descriptor matching, in order to enhance the matching accuracy and the processing speed. The proposed method utilizes various characteristics, such as the different geometry of image acquisition and the different radiometric characteristics, of the multi-sensor images. In addition, the suggested method uses the sensor model to minimize search area and eliminate false-matching points automatically.

  • During the conceptual design phase of a light sport aircraft, the wind tunnel tests were conducted to investigate the static stability of newly-designed configuration. The 1/5 scale-down wind tunnel model consisted of fuselage, main wing, vertical tail and horizontal tail. The main wing and tails were able to be attached or detached from the fuselage. The aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the 6 different configurations compounding each component were measured by using the internal balance system and their static stability derivatives were derived. With these experimental data, the baseline lift and drag characteristics as well as the effects of each component to the longitudinal, directional and lateral static stability were quantitatively analyzed.
