The study was conducted to centum the construct of individual perception and preference for work characteristics as personal factors influencing Korean nurses' job satisfaction. The subjects of the study were 231 nurses who are currently working in intensive care units and have been for a minimum of 6 months. The study used the Staff Perception and Preference Scale(Song et al., 1997) to measure the individual's perception and preference on the technical. practice. and management components of the ideal work environment. The Korean version of the Staff Perception and Preference Scale consists of 16 items on perception and 13 on preference with each item related on a scale from 1(not at all) to 4(a great deal). Psychometric testing revealed that the preference and perception scale is internally consistent with Chronbach's alphas of .83 for perception scale arid .80 for preference scale. The subscales of the perception and preference scale also showed acceptable reliability for the early stage of the development of the instruments with Chronbach alphas of .62-.76 and .69-.83 respectively. Criterion-related validity of the scale was tested by examining correlations with individual growth need that is conceptually close to individual preference. but not to individual perception. Individual growth need was significantly related to individual preference(r=.63, p<.05), but the correlation with the perception scale was not significant. A separate factor analysis for the each of perception and preference scales was performed with a three-factor loading solution based on a previous study. The results on the staff perception scale confirmed with varimax rotation that the items were cleanly and strongly loaded on technique. practice and management components, which together explained 50.7% of the variance. The factor analysis on the staff preference scale also yielded a three factor solution that explained 56.7% of the variance. but items on technique and management components were loaded together. This phenomena may due to the current nursing delivery system in Korea where nurses never experience either shared governance nor case management, and as a results they may not be able to consider management roles as their potential extended roles. Therefore, more efforts should be given to enhance nurses' autonomy and decision making in the technique, practice and management components of their work environment. Meanwhile, there is a need for continuously confirming and developing tools for individual perception and preferences to effectively enhance job satisfaction among Korean nurses through innovative work environments.
Purpose: To develop Pregnancy Risk symptom Perception Scale (PRPS) and evaluate its validity and reliability. Methods: A preliminary 30-item version of PRPS was developed through literature review, in-depth interview, and Content Validity. Each item was scored on a four-point Likert scale. The preliminary scale was developed based on 301 pregnant women who visited a hospital. Date were analyzed using item analysis, factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ (0.90 for total item, 0.80 to 0.88 for factors). Results: The PRPS consisted of 27 items. Three factors (physical, environmental, and emotional factors) explained 55% of the total variance. Cronbach's Criterion validity was supported by comparison with the Perception of Pregnancy Risk Questionnaire (r=0.34). In reliability test, the reliability coefficient of pregnancy risk symptom perception was high at 0.90. Conclusion: These results suggest that the pregnancy risk symptom perception scale developed in this study comprises items that can assess the level of pregnant women's pregnancy risk symptom perception in Korea. Its validity and reliability were proven. PRPS can be utilized to measure pregnant women's risk symptom perception during pregnancy. PRPS will contribute to the development of systematic prenatal care and effective risk management.
Objectives: This study evaluated the perception on importance of interprofessional core competencies (PI-ICCP) scale. Methods: Data were collected from 353 college students of health. Content validity was tested using the content validity index for individual items(I-CVI) and for scale(S-CVI). Criterion validity was tested using the professional competencies scale developed by Choi. Reliability was evaluated using Cronbach's coefficient alpha. The goodness-of-fit of the construct validity was determined through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Results: The I-CVI of each item was .8 or higher for all items, and the S-CVI was .98. The reliability of the PI-IPCC was Cronbach's α=.98. The goodness-of-fit indices of the model were χ2=1811.54(p<.001), the comparative fit index (CFI)=.91, and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA)=.08, which satisfied the criteria. Conclusions: The construct and criterion-related validity of the perception for PI-ICCP scale were a good fit, so the instrument is appropriate for measuring perception on importance of interprofessional core competencies. Further research will be required using this instrument to investigate perception of interprofessional core competencies of health professionals.
Background: Consumption of tobacco in the form of a water pipe has recently increased, especially among young people. This study aimed to develop a scale which would be used in order to detect perceptions about the effects of water pipe smoking on health and to test its validity and reliability. Our scale named "a scale of perception about the effects of water pipe smoking on health" was developed in order to detect factors effecting the perception of adolescents about the effects of water pipe smoking on health. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 150 voluntary students in scale development and 750 voluntary students in the study group. Data were collected via a questionnaire prepared by researchers themselves and 5-pont Likert scale for "a scale of perception about the effects of water pipe smoking on health" which was prepared through the literature. Data evaluation was carried out on a computer with SPSS. Results: The findings of the study showed that "a scale of perception about the effects of water pipe smoking on health" was valid and reliable. Total score average of the adolescents participated in the study was $58.5{\pm}1.25$. The mean score of the ones who did not smoke water pipe ($60.1{\pm}11.7$) was higher than the mean score of the ones who smoked water pipe ($51.6{\pm}13.8$), the difference being statistically significant. Conclusions: It is established that "a scale of perception about the effects of water pipe smoking on health" was a reliable and valid measurement tool. It is also found out that individuals who smoked a water pipe had a lower level of perception of water pipe smoking effects on health than their counterparts who did not smoke a water pipe.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the general characteristics of health-related majors to their life expectancy scale, depression scale, health perception scale, subjective wellbeing scale, somatic symptom scale and college life stress scale. And it's also meant to analyze influential factors for their stress about college life. Methods: The subjects in this study were the students who were in the department of dental laboratory technology and the department of dental hygiene at a college located in the region of Iksan, North Jeolla Province. Data were gathered in November and December, 2012. The life expectancy scale, depression scale, health perception scale, subjective wellbeing scale, physical symptom scale, somatic symptom scale and college life stress scale of the general characteristics were analyzed by t-test and one way analyses of variance (ANOVA) and the Duncan's multiple range test at the 95% confidence level to assess the statistical significance. And stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine what factors would affect the stress of the students about college life. The data were analyzed with the windows ver. 12.0(SPSS GmbH, Germany) statistical software program. Results: Among the general characteristics, there were significant differences according to gender and age in all the variables that were life expectancy scale, depression scale, health perception scale, subjective wellbeing scale, physical symptom scale and college life stress scale. 61.3% of the students responded they slept for six hours or less, and the respondents who slept for six hours or less scored significantly statistically lower in health perception scale, subjective wellbeing scale and physical symptom scale. As for college life stress, the respondents who got depressed more often, whose subjective peace or happiness was lower, whose life expectancy was lower, who had worse physical symptoms, whose living standard was lower and whose academic year was lower were under heavier stress about their college lives. Conclusion: As the worse physical health and worse mental health(life expectancy, depression, health perception, subjective wellbeing and physical symptoms, etc.) of the college students led to heavier stress about college life, how to promote their physical health and mental health should discreetly be considered, and every necessary measure should be taken to improve their physical and mental health.
It has been suggested that equity theory a social psychological theory concerned with the fairness in casual relationships should be applicable to marital relationships. This study describes the development of the scale for measuring perception of equity which measure the level of equity in marital relationships among Korean couples. PES(Perception of Equity Scale) is composed of two subscales; detailed measure of equity(DME) and global measure of equity(GME). The PES which include items from two areas of concern for intimates-pschological-emotional concern day-to-day concern-are describes. As results of test reliability of areas of DME range from .86 to .88 and reliability of GME is .92. And there are primarily evidences of construct validity of PES. Therefore PES is very reasonable scale to measure of equity/inequity perception in married couples. Finally analyzing of the level of equity in this sample husbands and wives has generally equitable relationships with their partn rs. Another findings suggest that husbands are overbenefited of their patners through marriage whereas wives are not.
New media moved the place of social exchange to the Internet, allowing large groups to communicate in one place beyond the limits of time and space. Recent studies have also reported cases in which human social abilities do not keep up with the expansion of group scale through social media. In this context, current study investigated how human perception of social information is affected by the expansion of the group scale in the context of majority bias. Using Internet-based task, the psychological processes that group ratio and group size are perceived and affect majority-biased social information use were investigated, and whether group scale moderates those processes was examined. The group ratio has a positive effect on the majority bias, and the relationship was partially mediated by ratio perception. Group scale did not moderate the relationship between group ratio and ratio perception. On the other hand, the correlation between group size and majority-biased social information use was not significant. Group scale moderates group size perception. The group size and size perception showed positive correlation under the smaller group scale condition. However under the extended group scale condition, the perceived group size became significantly lower and lost its correlation with group size. These results provide evidence that the psychological mechanism related to group size perception was not properly responding to the expansion of the group scale. Furthermore, the possibility of a specific psychological mechanism for processing group size information and the form of information input specifically accepted by majority bias were discussed from perspective of evolutionary psychology.
Purpose: A descriptive study was conducted to examine the relationship of illness perception, self-efficacy, and self-care of patients who were diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis. Methods: The study was conducted using a convenient sample from two hospitals in Incheon and Seoul. One hundred forty four patients completed a questionnaire which included questions on general characteristics, a Brief Illness Perception Scale, a Self-efficacy Scale and a Self-care Scale. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Moment Correlations and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results: There was a statistically significant positive correlation between illness perception and self-care (r=.335, p=.000) and between self-efficacy and self-care (r=.687, p=.000). Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that among the three variables the most powerful predictor was self-efficacy. Self-efficacy and illness perception were significant factors and accounted for 54.2% of the variance of self care in pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Conclusion: Self-efficacy and illness perception were influencing factors in self care among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Hence further interventional researches are needed that consider these two variables.
Purpose: This study was to examine the relationship between health perception, prenatal care behaviors and health promoting behaviors of unmarried pregnant women. Method: The subjects were 97 unmarried pregnant women. The data was collected through personal interviews using a questionnaire. Adjusted instruments were the health perception scale developed by Ware, prenatal care behavior scale developed by Lee, and health promoting behavior scale developed by Pender. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and the Pearson correlation coefficient with SPSS program. Result: The mean score of health perception was 3.3, and Resistance-Susceptibility was the highest. The mean score of prenatal care behaviors was 2.9, while that of health promoting behaviors was 2.5. The relationship between health perception and prenatal care behaviors was significant(r=0.268, p=.008). The relationship between prenatal care behaviors and health promoting behaviors was also significant (r=0.633, p=.000). Conclusion: The higher the health perception of unmarried pregnant women, the more they are concerned about good prenatal care behaviors. Unmarried pregnant women did well on health promoting behaviors when they had are high degree of good prenatal care behaviors. Therefore, in order to promote positive health perceptions of unmarried pregnant women, it is necessary to develop and adjust various education and supporting programs.
Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate life satisfaction(LS) and to assess the factors that influence LS in senior center elderly people. Methods: The subjects were 253 elders who visited the Y city Senior Welfare Center between July 2006 and August 2006. Data were collected using structured questionnaires. The instruments were composed of Kang's Family Support Scale, Depression Scale by Sheikh & Yesavage, Laffery's Health Concept Scale, and LS scale by Choi. T-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson coefficients correlation and stepwise multiple regression were used to analyze the data using the SPSS Win 12.0 program. Results: The LS level showed a maximum score of 38 with a mean score of 23.23. The mean scores for depression, health perception and family support were 5.52(maximum score, 15), 77.46(maximum score, 112), 43.45(maximum score, 55) respectively. The LS were significantly correlated with health perception, depression and family support. Depression was the most powerful predictor of and it accounted for 42.0% of the total variance in LS. A combination of significance of eudaimonistic health perception and satisfaction with pocket money accounted for 47.2% in LS. Conclusion: Depression and health perception were identified as affecting variables for the LS. Based upon these results, nurses should help the aged to enhance their LS.
