  • In this paper, we propose an integrated spatial and view scalable video codec based on high efficiency video coding (HEVC). The proposed video codec is developed based on similarity and uniqueness between the scalable extension and 3D multi-view extension of HEVC. To improve compression efficiency using the proposed scalable multi-view video codec, inter-layer and inter-view predictions are jointly employed by using high-level syntaxes that are defined to identify view and layer information. For the inter-view and inter-layer predictions, a decoded picture buffer (DPB) management algorithm is also proposed. The inter-view and inter-layer motion predictions are integrated into a consolidated prediction by harmonizing with the temporal motion prediction of HEVC. We found that the proposed scalable multi-view codec achieves bitrate reduction of 36.1%, 31.6% and 15.8% on the top of ${\times}2$, ${\times}1.5$ parallel scalable codec and parallel multi-view codec, respectively.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel design scheme for the operation of Decoded Picture Buffer (DPB) including reference picture re-ordering, marking process, and reference picture list construction to perform an efficient scalable multi-view video coding. Extensive simulations show that the proposed method can provide improved compression efficiency and improved video quality measured in terms of BD-Rate and BD-PSNR for the scalable multi-view video coding.

  • This paper proposes a realistic multi-view scalable video coding scheme designed for user's interest in 3D content services and the usage in the future computing environment. Future video coding schemes should support realistic services that make users feel the 3-D presence through stereoscopic or multi-view videos, as well as to accomplish the so-called one-source multi-use services in order to comprehensively support diverse transmission environments and terminals. Unlike the most of video coding methods which only support two-dimensional display, the proposed coding scheme in this paper is the method which can support such realistic services. This paper designs and also implements the proposed coding scheme through integrating Multi-view Video Coding scheme and Scalable Video Coding scheme, then shows its possibility of realization of 3D services by the simulation. The simulation results show the proposed structure remarkably improves the performance of random access with almost the same coding efficiency.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient motion prediction architecture and DPB design mechanism for scalable multi-view video coding which is implemented by integrating SVC and MVC coding algorithms. In the proposed motion prediction architecture, we employ pictures associated with other views as a candidate for reference picture for improved motion prediction performance. By the proposed prediction architecture, we could enormously reduce the size of compressed video data. When performing scalable multi-view video coding, an integrated DPB design mechanism is also proposed. It is shown by various simulations that the proposed motion prediction architecture for scalable multi-view video coding can result in reduced data size in the compressed bitstream.

  • Based on the fact that high similarities exist between viewpoints of multi-view images, MV-HEVC achieves high encoding efficiency by performing conventional temporal direction prediction in a single viewpoint as well as inter-view prediction between viewpoints. In this paper, we propose to integrate SHVC and MVC (Multi-view Video Coding) to implement scalable multi-view video encoder using HEVC as a base layer. According to experimental results, it is verified that the BD-PSNR improvement reaches up to 1.5dB while reducing the BD-Bitrate by around 50~60%.

  • In this paper, we demonstrate inter-layer prediction tools for scalable video coders. The proposed scalable coder is designed to support not only spatial, quality and temporal scalabilities, but also view scalability. In addition, we propose quad-tree inter-layer prediction tools to improve coding efficiency at enhancement layers. The proposed inter-layer prediction tools generate texture prediction signal with exploiting texture, syntaxes, and residual information from a reference layer. Furthermore, the tools can be used with inter and intra prediction blocks within a large coding unit. The proposed framework guarantees the rate distortion performance for a base layer because it does not have any compulsion such as constraint intra prediction. According to experiments, the framework supports the spatial scalable functionality with about 18.6%, 18.5% and 25.2% overhead bits against to the single layer coding. The proposed inter-layer prediction tool in multi-loop decoding design framework enables to achieve coding gains of 14.0%, 5.1%, and 12.1% in BD-Bitrate at the enhancement layer, compared to a single layer HEVC for all-intra, low-delay, and random access cases, respectively. For the single-loop decoding design, the proposed quad-tree inter-layer prediction can achieve 14.0%, 3.7%, and 9.8% bit saving.

  • At the view of Application layer, there are many researches to achieve the cross-layer optimization with Physical layer. Scalable video coding is good example. Although it is necessary to consider the session layer which lies halfway between two layers, the research about that is insufficient. We present a feasible solution of dynamic session control for scalable video coding over IMS.

  • In this paper, we study the structure of the hierarchical coding method of video signal which can contain the multi resolution video signals. To preserve the compatibility with the conventional coding methods. we accomplished a scalable structure using the subband coding, maintaining enoughly the international coding structure. The proposed scheme showed the low PSNR, a little, when compared with the conventional scheme, but showed a good image quality perceptually and proved to have a advantage in the H/W implementation in a view of processing speed.

  • In this paper, we propose the extension of the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) header for efficient adaptation of multi-layer coded video such as scalable video coding (SVC) and multiview video coding (MVC) in the HTTP streaming. First of all, the limit of the existing TS in terms of flexible adaptation of multi-layer video is investigated, and the signaling by extending TS header is proposed to provide efficient adaptation in a TS level. The proposed extension utilizes the private data field in the adaptation field of TS header to signal scalability and/or view information, which enable us to support diverse adaptation that suits underlying constraints of client capabilities, network conditions and user preferences. In short, the extension enables adaptation of scalable video with full scalability as well as view selection of multiview video in a TS level while keeping backward compatibility with the existing TS syntax/semantics. The performance of the proposed extension is compared with the existing adaptation using PID (packet ID) in terms of efficiency and complexity of adaptation. Furthermore, the increase of TS overhead caused by proposed extension is analyzed and an extension scheme to minimized the overhead is proposed.
