  • In this paper, we propose an integrated spatial and view scalable video codec based on high efficiency video coding (HEVC). The proposed video codec is developed based on similarity and uniqueness between the scalable extension and 3D multi-view extension of HEVC. To improve compression efficiency using the proposed scalable multi-view video codec, inter-layer and inter-view predictions are jointly employed by using high-level syntaxes that are defined to identify view and layer information. For the inter-view and inter-layer predictions, a decoded picture buffer (DPB) management algorithm is also proposed. The inter-view and inter-layer motion predictions are integrated into a consolidated prediction by harmonizing with the temporal motion prediction of HEVC. We found that the proposed scalable multi-view codec achieves bitrate reduction of 36.1%, 31.6% and 15.8% on the top of ${\times}2$, ${\times}1.5$ parallel scalable codec and parallel multi-view codec, respectively.

  • In this paper, we design and implement a 3D scalable video codec by combining the Scalable HEVC (SHVC) and the 3D-HEVC which are the extended standards of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). The proposed 3D scalable video codec supports the view and spatial scalabilities which are the properties of 3D-HEVC and SHVC, respectively. In the proposed 3D scalable codec, the high-level syntaxes are designed to support the multiple scalabilities. In the computer simulation section, we confirmed the conformance of the proposed codec and analyzed the performance of the proposed codec.

  • In this paper. the structure of bandwidth scalable wideband speech codec and its high-band codec are proposed. In the high-band codec. the signal is divided into frequency bands. and each band is quantized in DCT domain. The DCT coefficients are splitted into magnitude and sign, and each is quantized independently by a specialized method based on its characteristics. In addition. the quantized gain parameter in the low-band codec is utilized in the high-band codec for an enhanced performance. The bandwidth scalable wideband speech codec using G.729E for low-band and the proposed codec for high-band is developed, and it is confirmed that the proposed codec has better subjective performance than 24kbps G.722.1.

  • In this Paper. we present a bitrate scalable speech codec which uses an ITU-T G.723.1 as the baseline coder and encodes the synthesis error signal in an enhancement coder. ITU-T P.862 (PESQ) is used to evaluate the Performance of the bitrate scalable coder. Experiments show that 6.7kbps enhancement layer based on G.723.1 5.3kbps produces the increase of 0.39 in MOS and 5.7kbps enhancement layer based on G.723.1 6.3kbps Produces the increase of 0.267 in MOS.

  • A high-Performance scalable speech codec generally requires a very low-rate first layer and a fine granule second layer, and this codec can be implemented with the harmonic codec and the MDCT-based transform codec for each layer. In this structure, however. each codec requires independent frequency transform and the time delay of each codec is accumulated. resulting in long time delay for the overall codec. In this paper, new MDCT structure in the second layer is Proposed. where MDCT is forced to share the look-ahead region of the first layer in order to prevent the time delay accumulation and the resulting functional error of MDCT is analyzed and removed after IMDCT The Proposed delayless MDCT requires no additional bits and Provides the equivalent coding performance with the reduced time delay, yielding a meaningful enhancement of the overall codec.

  • A next-generation codec should be developed to be a scalable video codec(SVC) that not only maximizes the coding efficiency but also adaptively copes with the various communication devices and the variation of network environments. To meet these requirements, Joint Video Team (JVT) of ISO/IEC and ITU-T is standardizing H.264/AVC based SVC. In this paper, we introduce research directions and status on SVC standardization and also analyze techniques and algorithms adopted in the current SVC.

  • In this paper, the high-band codec for bandwidth scalable wideband speech codec is proposed. The wideband input speech signal is separated into low-band signal and high-band signal, and the low-band signal is encoded by the standard narrow-band speech codec and the high-band signal is encoded by the proposed codec. In the high-band codec. the signal is transformed into frequency domain by MLT on a subframe basis, and MLT coefficients are splitted into magnitude and sign for quantization. The magnitudes of MLT coefficients are arranged into several time-frequency bands and each band is quantized in 2D-DCT domain, where the low-band information is utilized for better performance. The sign of MLT coefficient is quantized based on a priority selection process with the weighting measurement. The objective and subjective performance of wideband speech codec including the proposed high-band codec is measured, and it is confirmed that the proposed codec has better performance than 32kbps G.722.1.

  • This paper describes the scalable extension of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) to provide flexible high-quality digital video content services. The proposed scalable codec is designed on multi-loop decoding architecture to support inter-layer sample prediction and inter-layer motion parameter prediction. Inter-layer sample prediction is enabled by inserting the reconstructed picture of the reference layer (RL) into the decoded picture buffer of the enhancement layer (EL). To reduce the motion parameter redundancies between layers, the motion parameter of the RL is used as one of the candidates in merge mode and motion vector prediction in the EL. The proposed scalable extension can support scalabilities with minimum changes to the HEVC and provide average Bj${\o}$ntegaard delta bitrate gains of about 24% for spatial scalability and of about 21% for SNR scalability compared to simulcast coding with HEVC.

  • The conventional 3D-HEVC uses the depth data of the other view instead of that of the current view because the texture data has to be encoded before the corresponding depth data of the current view has been encoded, where the depth data of the other view is used as the predicted depth for the current view. Whereas the conventional 3D-HEVC has no other candidate for the predicted depth information except for that of the other view, the scalable 3D-HEVC utilizes the depth data of the lower spatial layer whose view ID is equal to that of the current picture. The depth data of the lower spatial layer is up-scaled to the resolution of the current picture, and then the enlarged depth data is used as the predicted depth information. Because the quality of the enlarged depth is much higher than that of the depth of the other view, the proposed scheme increases the coding efficiency of the scalable 3D-HEVC codec. Computer simulation results show that the scalable 3D-HEVC is useful and the proposed scheme to use the enlarged depth data for the current picture provides the significant coding gain.

  • The H.264/SVC enables network-adaptive video transmission to smart device which uses wireless network. But, quality scalability of H.264/SVC does not consider personal subjective image quality. In addition, its network efficiency also does not optimized because it uses MGS(Medium Grained Scalability) and CGS(Coarse Grained Scalability). Thus, this paper proposed a new scalable ROI algorithm for not only subjective image quality improvement but also network adaptation. To experiment our proposed a scheme, we added designed algorithm to JSVM(Joint Scalable Video Model) open source video codec of H.264/SVC. Experiment was performed according to the pre-defined scenario for simulating various network conditions. Finally, experimental result showed our proposed scalable ROI scheme. It is better than traditional non-selective scheme in subjective video quality.
