In this paper, we propose a new frame prediction filtering technique and a hardware(H/W) architecture for scalable video coding. We try to evaluate MCTF(motion compensated temporal filtering) and hierarchical B-picture which are a technique for eliminate correlation between video frames. Since the techniques correspond to non-causal system in time, these have fundamental defects which are long latency time and large size of frame buffer. We propose a new architecture to be efficiently implemented by reconfiguring non-causal system to causal system. We use the property of a repetitive arithmetic and propose a new frame prediction filtering cell(FPFC). By expanding FPFC we reconfigure the whole arithmetic architecture. After the operational sequence of arithmetic is analyzed in detail and the causality is imposed to implement in hardware, the unit cell is optimized. A new FPFC kernel was organized as simple as possible by repeatedly arranging the unit cells and a FPFC processor is realized for scalable video coding.

In this paper, an efficient 4K and 8K UHD(Ultra High Definition) transmission scheme is proposed on the convergence networks with broadcasting and LTE(Long Term Evolution) by using CoMP(Coordinated Multi-Point). A video data is compressed and divided into BL(Base Layer), E(Enhanced layer)1, E2 and E3 by scalable HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding). The divided layers can be combined by the scalable HEVC such as mobile HD, full HD, 4K and 8K UHD(Ultra High Definition). The divided layers are transmitted through the convergence networks with DVB-T2(Digital Video Broadcasting-$2^{nd}$ Generation Terrestrial) broadcasting system and LTE CoMP. This scheme transmits mobile HD and full HD layers through DVB-T2 broadcasting system by using M-PLP(Multiple-physical Layer Pipes), and adaptively transmits 4K or 8K UHD layer through LTE CoMP with MMT(MPEG Media Transport) server. An adaptive transmitting and receiving scheme in the LTE CoMP system provides 4K or 8K UHD layer to a user according to the user status. The proposed scheme is verified by showing the system-level simulation results which is better BER(bit-error-rate) performance than the conventional scheme. The results show that the proposed scheme provides the stable video contents to the user especially at the cell edge.

Recently, as users' requests for high quality mobile multimedia services are rapidly increasing and additional bandwidth can be provided by adopting the hierarchical modulation transmission technology, the research on the Advanced Terrestrial DMB (AT-DMB) service using the SVC (Scalable Video Coding) scheme is being actively studied. But, in order to realize a compatible video service and to accelerate the successful standardization and commercialization, it is necessary to simplify the compatible encoder structure. In this parer, we propose a fast mode decision method by constraining the redundant coding modes in the spatial scalable encoder that keeps the current T-DMB video in base layer. The proposed method is based on the statistical characteristics of each coding mode at both base and enhancement layers, inter-layer predictions, which are derived by investigating macroblock-layer coding modes of the spatial scalable encoder's functional structure. Through computer simulations, it is shown that a simplified encoder model that reduces the heavy computational burden can be found, while keeping the objective visual quality very high.

In heterogeneous networks SVC (Scalabile Video Coding) will be used for IPTV service. This paper analyses how to determine the optimal inter-layer reference scheme according to final level to be displayed in hybrid scalable coding which consists of spatial, quality and temporal layer. It determines where to stop layering quality layer stacks in lower spatial layer according to the relationship between noise induced by loss of high frequency component eliminated by filter in order to get rid of aliasing when spatial layering is processed and noise induced by quantization when quality layering is processed. This paper shows the choice of the level of layering between spatial and quality to get better coding efficiency and then presents what is needed for determining it.
The overall channel capacity of a multihop wireless path drops progressively over each hop due to the cascading effect of noise and interference. Hence, without optimal rate adaptation, the video quality is expected to degrade significantly at any client located at a far-edge of an ad-hoc network. To overcome this limitation, decoding and forwarding (DF), which fully decodes codewords at each intermediate node, can be employed to provide the best video quality. However, complexity and memory usage for DF are significantly high. Consequently, we propose syndrome-based partial decoding (SPD). In the SPD framework an intermediate node partially decodes a codeword and relays the packet along with its syndromes if the packet is corrupted. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme by simulations using actual 802.11b wireless traces. The trace-driven simulations show that the proposed SPD framework, which reduces the overall processing requirements of intermediate nodes, provides reasonably high goodput when compared to simple forwarding and less complexity and memory requirements when compared to DF.
To improve coding performance of scalable video coding which is an emerging video coding standard as an extension of H.264/AVC, SVC uses not only intra prediction and inter prediction but inter-layer prediction. This causes a problem that computational complexity is increased. In this paper, we propose an efficient intra prediction mode decision method in spatial enhancement layer to reduce the computational complexity. The proposed method selects Inra_BL mode using RD cost of Intra_BL in advance. After that, intra mode is decided by only comparing DC modes. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces 59% of the computation complexity of intra prediction coding, while the degradation in video quality is negligible.

In this paper, we propose a fast intra prediction mode selection method in Scalable Video Coding(SVC) which is an emerging video coding standard as an extension of H.264/Advanced Video Coding(H.264/AVC). The proposed method decides a candidate intra prediction mode based on the characteristic of macroblock smoothness. Statistical analysis is applied to computing that smoothness in spatial enhancement layer. We also propose an early termination scheme for Intra_BL mode decision where the RD cost value of Intra_BL is utilized. Compared with JSVM software, our scheme can reduce about 55% of the computation complexity of intra prediction on average, while the performance degradation is negligible; For low QP values, the average PSNR loss is very negligible, equivalently the bit rate increases by 0.01%. For high QP values, the average PSNR loss is less than 0.01dB, which equals to 0.25% increase in bitrate on average.

Protection to the multimedia contents is inevitable to ensure that only authorized users be able to access the protected contents for consumption. Since protection mechanisms need to be designed efficiently by exploiting the type of the contents, we propose a protection scheme for the video bitstream encoded by Scalable Video Coding (SVC) technique. Our scheme exploits the property of SVC in which a video is encoded into spatial, temporal, and quality scalability layers. By applying our proposed protection scheme to the appropriate scalability layers we can effectively control the SVC contents completely or partially. Each layer can be flexibly protected with different encryption keys or even with different encryption algorithms. The algorithms that are used to protect each layer are described by the standardized protection description tool, which is the MPEG-21 Intellectual Property Management and Protection (IPMP) Components. In this paper, we present the design of the proposed layered SVC protection scheme, its implementation and experimental results. The experiment result shows that the proposed layered SVC protection scheme is very effective and can easily be applied.
Introduction of motion video including live video into network virtual reality systems makes virtual spaces more attractive. To handle live video in networked virtual reality s)'stems based on VRML, the scalability of networked virtual reality systems becomes very important on the internet where the performance of the network and the end systems varies dynamically. In this paper, a new quality control algorithm suitable for scalable networked virtual reality systems with live video capability is proposed. Our approach is to introduce the notion of the importance of presence (IoP) which represents the importance of objects in virtual spaces. According to IoPs, the degree of the deterioration of each object presentation will be determined in case of the starvation of system resources.
In this paper, we propose the extension of the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) header for efficient adaptation of multi-layer coded video such as scalable video coding (SVC) and multiview video coding (MVC) in the HTTP streaming. First of all, the limit of the existing TS in terms of flexible adaptation of multi-layer video is investigated, and the signaling by extending TS header is proposed to provide efficient adaptation in a TS level. The proposed extension utilizes the private data field in the adaptation field of TS header to signal scalability and/or view information, which enable us to support diverse adaptation that suits underlying constraints of client capabilities, network conditions and user preferences. In short, the extension enables adaptation of scalable video with full scalability as well as view selection of multiview video in a TS level while keeping backward compatibility with the existing TS syntax/semantics. The performance of the proposed extension is compared with the existing adaptation using PID (packet ID) in terms of efficiency and complexity of adaptation. Furthermore, the increase of TS overhead caused by proposed extension is analyzed and an extension scheme to minimized the overhead is proposed.
