The mechanical behavior of rock is essential to estimate the capacity and long-term stability of $CO_2$ storage in deep saline aquifers. As the depth of reservoir increases, the pressure and temperature that applied on the rock increase. To answer the question of how the confining pressure and temperature influence the mechanical behavior of reservoir rock, triaxial compression experiments were carried out on brine-saturated sandstone at elevated temperature. The triaxial compressive strength of brine-saturated sandstone was observed to decrease with increasing testing temperature, and the temperature weakening effect in strength enhanced with the increase of confining pressure. Sandstone specimens showed single fracture failures under triaxial compression. Three typical regions around the main fracture were identified: fracture band, damaged zone and undamaged zone. A function was proposed to describe the evolution of acoustic emission count under loading. Finally, the mechanism of elevated temperature causing the reduction of strength of brine-saturated sandstone was discussed.
Recently, stratigraphic reservoirs are getting more attention than structural reservoirs which have mostly developed. However, recognizing stratigraphic thin gas reservoirs in a stacked section is usually difficult because of tuning effects. Moreover, if the reflections from the brine-saturated region of a thin layer have the same polarity with those from the gas-saturated region, we could not easily identify the gas reservoir with conventional data processing technique. In this study, we introduced a way to delineate the gas-saturated region in a thin layer reservoir using a spectral decomposition method. First of all, amplitude spectrum with the variation of the frequency and the incident angle was investigated for the medium which represents property of Class 3, Class 1 or Class 4 AVO response. The results show that the maximum difference in the amplitude spectra between brine and gas-saturated thin layers occurs around the peak frequency independent of the incident angle and the type of AVO responses. In addition, the amplitude spectra of the gas-saturated zone are greater than those of brine-saturated one in Class 3 and Class 4 at the peak frequency while those of phenomenon occur oppositely in Class 1. Based on the results, we applied spectral decomposition method to the stacked section in order to distinguish the gas-saturated zone from the brine-saturated zone in a thin layer reservoir. To verify our new method, we constructed a thin-layer velocity model which contains both gas and brine-saturated zones which have the same reflection polarities. As a result, in the spectral decomposed sections near the peak frequency obtained by Wigner-Ville Distribution (WVD), we could identify the difference between reflections from gas- and brinesaturated region in the thin layer reservoir, which was hardly distinguishable in the stacked section.
A woodblock softening process using saltwater was investigated in order to reduce the cracks and distortion caused by the woodblock-making process and to make the woodblock softer and sculpturing easier. Although anatomical studies of woodblocks have been ongoing for years, little work has been done on softening treatments using natural materials. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the change in the physical properties of wood treated with saturated brine and the effect of salt on metal nails found embedded in woodblocks. After boiling for twelve h each in water and saturated brine, the saltwater-boiled specimens have longer drying times than the water-boiled specimens. Further, it was observed that salt particles penetrated the cells in the wood. As a result of exposing the copper and iron nails, which were stuck in each specimen, to a high humidity environment, the weight of the saltwater-boiled specimens increased due to the hygroscopicity of the salt. Corrosion of the nails also occurred. This result is similar to the problem that appears on the edge of a woodblock. In conclusion, it was shown that salt in the wood cells affects the corrosion of metal embedded in the wood.
In this study, we investigated the effects of sulfuric acid on the synthesis of calcium borate in the artificial boron-containing brine (bittern) saturated with calcium hydroxide. For the study, we attempted to synthesize calcium borate under various conditions such as reaction temperature, reaction time, and cooling temperature after heating, and then to examine the recovery and purity of the calcium borate according to the presence or absence of sulfuric acid at each condition. The XRD analysis confirmed that, regardless of the presence of sulfuric acid, the calcium borate ($Ca_2B_2O_5{\cdot}H_2O$) was synthesized, while, in the presence of sulfuric acid, the calcium sulfate ($CaSO_4{\cdot}0.5H_2O$) was produced as a by-product. In all the experiments performed by varying the reaction temperature and time, the recovery and purity of the calcium borate without sulfuric acid were observed higher than those with it. The results indicated that the addition of sulfuric acid increased the solubility of the calcium hydroxide, but the calcium sulfate produced as a by-product could decrease the recovery and purity of the calcium borate by preventing the synthesis. In this study, the artificial boron-containing brine (bittern) (500 mg-B/L) was saturated with calcium hydroxide in the absence of sulfuric acid, and then the solution was heated at $80-105^{\circ}C$ for less than 10 minutes to synthesize the calcium borate. The recovery and purity of calcium borate were measured as high as 80 % and 96 %, respectively.

MHR(Metal Hydride Refrigerator) powered by MGT exhaust gas is investigated to find out the optimum conditions corresponding to MGT operating powers. There are many factors to affect cooling capacity of MHR. In this study, the effect of switching time, flow rate of brine on cooling temperature and capacity is investigated. The present results show (1) hydrogen reaction is saturated with 25 min switching time at 25 kW MGT power, (2) cooling power shows maximum phenomenon with increasing switching time, (3) optimum switching times are 20 minutes for 15kW MGT power and 15 minutes for 20, 25kW MGT power, (4) according to increasing brine flow rate, cooling capacity shows decrease at 15 kW MGT power and changes little at above 20 kW MGT power.
Soybean sprouts have been a considered a nutrient-rich vegetable for hundreds of years. To evaluate the seedlot quality of soybean sprouts grown, and to evaluate a method for reducing the presence of improper seeds in soybean seedlots, microbes associated with soybean sprout rot were isolated from samples collected. Morphological characteristics and gas chromatography profiles of the cultured fungal and bacterial strains were identified. Eight types of improper seeds were identified: purple stain(Ps), black rot(Br), seed coat black spot(Cb), wrinkled seed(Ws), brown hilum(Bh), seed coat fracture(Cf), unripe seed(Us), and brown seed coat(Bc). The improper seeds were also dipped into 15%, 20%, and 25% NaCl solutions, as well as a saturated solution of NaCl, for 1min. As the NaCl concentration increased, the number of floating improper seeds increased as well. The highest floating rates were observed for the Cf seeds.

To improve the quality of Gulbi, 10% garlic juice (GJ), 10% onion juice (OJ), and 10% garlic and onion juice mixture (GOJ) were added to the brine solution as a wet-salting method. The changes of total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) and trimethyl amine (TMA) production, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) value, and total microbial numbers in Gulbi were analyzed during storage at room temperature for 12 days. The group treated with 10% GOJ showed the lowest values of 88.2 mg/l00 g in TVB-N, 14.13 mg/l00 g in TMA, and 3.1 $\mu$mol/kg in TBARS. The fatty acid profile of Gulbi was analyzed on 5, 15, and 30 days to investigate the effect of GOJ treatment. The group treated with GOJ showed higher C22:6 (9.91%) and C20:5 (4.25%) contents than control (7.37% and 3.71%, respectively), but had lower C18:1 (24.44%) content. The saturated fatty acid content in Gulbi was 32∼35% and the C16:0 (21∼23%) was predominant in it. Oleic acid was major unsaturated fatty acid in Gulbi. The contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids (C18:3, C20:5, C22:6) were decreased after 30 days but increased the saturated fatty acid (C16:0) and monoenes (C16:1 and C18:1). The Gulbi treated with GOJ by brine salting method showed higher DHA and EPA (9.91% and 4.25%, respectively) contents than the control group.
As a basic study to develop low-salted fermented anchovy, rates of salt penetration into anchovy muscle, patterns of protein degradation and changes in water activity and transfer was analyzed after brining at various salt (NaCl) concentration. The salt penetration curves followed first order. kinetics. The rate constant (k) increased from 0.018 (10% NaCl solution) to 0.051 (saturated). Water activity was reduced from 0.93 (10% NaCl solution) to 0.77 (saturated). Protein degradation during brining was Somewhat occurred in 10% NaCl solution but not in satutrated solution. Water content of anchovy muscle were 74% (w/w), 65% and 58% when 10%, 20% and saturated NaCl solution were used, respectively. This result indicated that as NaCl content of brining solution was increased, the amount of water transfer also occurred. Weight of anchovy increased at 10% NaCl solution and decreased at 20% and saturated NaCl solution. The loss of anchovy solid mash during brining was calculated as 30% after 36 hr brining.

Formation and transportation of $CO_2$-hydrate slurry was conducted by circulating saturated water with $CO_2$ through a double-tube type heat exchanger which was cooled down by brine. The inner diameter and circulation length of the heat exchanger were 1 inch and 20 m, respectively. Water in tank was supersaturated by injected $CO_2$ and the operation pressure was maintained at 3,000 to 4,000 kPa with fluid-temperature of less than $9^{\circ}C$. $CO_2$ hydrate mass fraction was calculated based on density of $CO_2$-hydrate slurry mixture. Results showed that the $CO_2$-hydrate slurry could be circulated without blockage for 1 hr. Circulation status of the $CO_2$-hydrate slurry was also visualized.

It is extremely difficult to apply conventional grouting methods to subsea tunnelling construction in the high water pressure condition. In such a condition, the rapid artificial freezing method can be an alternative to grouting to form a watertight zone around freezing pipes. For a proper design of the artificial freezing method, the influence of salinity on the freezing process has to be considered. However, there are few domestic tunnel construction that adopted the artificial freezing method, and influential factors on the freezing of the soil are not clearly identified. In this paper, a series of laboratory experiments were performed to identify the physical characteristics of frozen soil. Thermal conductivity of the frozen and unfrozen soil samples was measured through the thermal sensor adopting transient hot-wire method. Moreover, a lab-scale freezing chamber was devised to simulate freezing process of silica sand with consideration of the salinity of pore-water. The temperature in the silica sand sample was measured during the freezing process to evaluate the effect of pore-water salinity on the frozen rate that is one of the key parameters in designing the artificial freezing method in subsea tunnelling. In case of unfrozen soil, the soil samples saturated with fresh water (salinity of 0%) and brine water (salinity of 3.5%) showed a similar value of thermal conductivity. However, the frozen soil sample saturated with brine water led to the thermal conductivity notably higher than that of fresh water, which corresponds to the fact that the freezing rate of brine water was greater than that of fresh water in the freezing chamber test.
