We investigate the clustering properties of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z ~ 4. Using the hierarchical galaxy formation model GALFORM, we predict the angular correlation function (ACF) of LBGs and compare this with the measured ACF from combined survey fields consisting of the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (XDF) and CANDELS. We find that the predicted ACF is in a good agreement with the measured ACFs. However, when we divide the model LBGs into bright and faint subset, the predicted ACFs are less consistent with observations. We quantify the dependence of clustering on luminosity and show that the fraction of satellite LBGs is important for determining the amplitude of ACF at small scales. We find that central LBGs predominantly reside in ${\sim}10^{11}h^{-1}M_{solar}$ haloes and satellites reside in haloes of mass ${\sim}10^{12}-10^{13}h^{-1}M_{solar}$. The model predicts fewer bright satellite LBGs than is inferred from the observation. LBGs in the tails of the redshift distribution contribute significant additional clustering signal, especially on small scales. This spurious clustering may affect the interpretation of the halo occupation distribution, including the minimum halo mass and abundance of satellite LBGs.
Global Positioning System (GPS) Precise Point Positioning (PPP) has been extensively used for geodetic applications. Since December 2012, BeiDou navigation satellite system has provided regional positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) services over the Asia-Pacific region. Recently, many studies on BeiDou system have been conducted, particularly in the area of precise orbit determination and precise positioning. In this paper PPP method based on BeiDou observations are presented. GPS and BeiDou data obtained from Mokpo (MKPO) station are processed using the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) PPP software. The positions are derived from the GPS PPP, BeiDou B1/B2 PPP and BeiDou B1/B3 PPP, respectively. The position errors on BeiDou PPP show a mean bias < 2 cm in the east and north components and approximately 3 cm in the vertical component. It indicates that BeiDou PPP is ready for the precise positioning applications in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, BeiDou tropospheric zenith total delay (ZTD) is compared to GPS ZTD at MKPO station. The mean value of their difference is approximately 0.52 cm.
Solar energy is attenuated by absorbing gases (ozone, aerosol, water vapour and mixed gas) and cloud in the atmosphere. And these are measured with solar instruments (pyranometer, phyheliometer). However, solar energy is insufficient to represent detailed energy distribution, because the distributions of instruments are limited on spatial. If input data of solar radiation model is accurate, the solar energy reaches at the surface can be calculated accurately. Recently a variety of satellite measurements are available to TERA/AQUA (MODIS), AURA (OMI) and geostationary satellites (GMS-5, GOES-9, MTSAT-1R, MTSAT-2 and COMS). Input data of solar radiation model can be used aerosols and surface albedo of MODIS, total ozone amount of OMI and cloud fraction of meteorological geostationary satellite. The solar energy reaches to the surface is calculated hourly by solar radiation model and those are accumulated monthly and annual. And these results are verified the spatial distribution and validated with ground observations.
Conventional methods for measuring winds provide wind velocity observations over limited area and time period. The use of satellite imagery for measuring wind velocity overcomes some of these limitations by providing wide area and near condinuous coverage. And its accurate depiction is essential for operational weather forecasting and for initialization of NWP models. GMS-5 provides full disk images at hourly intervals. At four times each day - 0500, 1100, 1700, 2300 hours UTC-a series of three images is received, separated by thirty minutes, centered at the four times. The current wind system generates winds from sets of 3 infrared(IR) images, separated by an hour, four times a day. It also produces visible(VIS) and water vapor(WV) image-based winds from half-hourly imagery four times a day. The derivation of wind from satellite imagery involves the identification of suitable cloud targets. tracking the targets on sequential images, associating a pressure height with the derived wind vector, and quality control. The aim of this research is to incorporate imagery from other available spectral channels and examine the error characteristics of winds derived from these images.
Equatorial Plasma Bubble (herafter, EPB) is a common feature in low-latitude F-region during the night time. Since EPB causes significant impacts on the satellite communication and navigation systems, its accurate forecast is highly demanded by the GNSS users. Thus, further understanding of these features and their configuration is a challenging issue in space weather studies. The day-to-day variability of the plasma bubble activity was investigated by analyzing the TIMED/GUVI, ROCSAT-1, DMSP, and CHAMP satellite data. The pre-reversal enhancement (PRE) is known as the most important single parameter for the onset of plasma bubbles but we do not know yet to what extent the day-to-day variability of the bubble activity can be attributed to the PRE. We obtained the magnitude of the PRE from ROCSAT-1 and the occurrence of bubbles in relation to the PRE was investigated by using the coincident observations of EPBs from TIMED/GUVI, DMSP, and CHAMP. By conducting one-to-one comparison of the PRE characteristics with the EPB occurrence we examined the role of the PRE in the onset of EPBs.

Climate change has caused changes in environmental factors that have a direct impact on agriculture such as temperature and precipitation. The meteorological disaster that has the greatest impact on agriculture is drought, and its forecasts are closely related to agricultural production and water supply. In the case of terrestrial data, the accuracy of the spatial map obtained by interpolating the each point data is lowered because it is based on the point observation. Therefore, acquisition of various meteorological data through satellite imagery can complement this terrestrial based drought monitoring. In this study, Evaporative Stress Index (ESI) was used as satellite data for drought determination. The ESI was developed by NASA and USDA, and is calculated through thermal observations of GOES satellites, MODIS, Landsat 5, 7 and 8. We will identify the difference between ESI and other satellite-based drought assessment indices (Vegetation Health Index, VHI, Leaf Area Index, LAI, Enhanced Vegetation Index, EVI), and use it to analyze the drought in South Korea, and examines the applicability of ESI as a new indicator of agricultural drought monitoring.
Spatial and temporal aspects of toxic dinoflagellate Cochlodinium.p blooms and consequences of physical features in complex coastal ecosystems, off the southern Korean coast, have been investigated using data obtained from SeaWiFS and AVHRR as well as in-situ observations. Hydrographic parameters measured using CTD sensors were used to elucidate physical factors affecting the spatial distribution and abundance of Cochlodinium.p blooms. The results show spatial and temporal variations of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and sea surface temperature (SST) and reveal significant information about Cochlodinium.p blooms and process underlying their evolution. Satellitederived Chl-a estimates appear to be potential in explicating the evolution, movement and distribution of Cochlodinium.p blooms in the enclosed bays of the South Sea. The existence of thromohaline waters offshore provide favorable conditions for the rapid growth and subsequent southward initiation of Cochlodinium.p blooms that are influenced to flow on the offshore branch (OB) during September. It was observed that there was a significant variation in the sun-induced chlorophyll-a fluorescence signal in the remote sensing fluorescence spectra and its high-intensity was recognized during the period of exponential growth and physical transport. Satellite-derived Chl-a concentration during September 1999 ranged between $360mg/m^3$ inside the Jin-hae and adjacent Bays and $1-6mg/m^3$ in offshore waters, with varying Cochlodinium.p abundances 1500 to 26000 cells $ml^{-1}.$ The closely spaced CTD surveys and satellite-derived SST give a complete overview on the initiation of Cochlodinium.p blooms in hydrodynamically active regions of the offshore southern East Sea by the influence of Tsushima Warm Current (TWC).

Satellites have been valuable tool for global/regional scale atmospheric environment monitoring as well as emission source detection. In this study, we present the results of application of satellite remote sensing data for air quality forecast in Seoul metropolitan area. AOT (Aerosol Optical Thickness) data from TERRA/MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectre-radiometer) satellite were compared to ground based $PM_{10}$ mass concentrations, and used to estimate the possibility of the aerosol forecasting in Seoul metropolitan area. Although correlation coefficient (${\sim}0.37$) between MODIS AOT products and surface $PM_{10}$ concentration data was relatively low, there was good correlation between MODIS AOT and surface PM concentration under certain atmospheric conditions, which supports the feasibility of using the high-resolution MODIS AOT for air quality forecasting. The MODIS AOT data with trajectory forecasts also can provide information on aerosol concentration trend. The success rate of the 24 hour aerosol concentration trend forecast result was about 75% in this study. Finally, application of satellite remote sensing data with ground-based air quality observations could provide promising results for air quality monitoring and more exact trend forecast methodology by high resolution satellite data and verification with long term measurement dataset.
Since aerosol has a relatively short duration and significant spatial variation, satellite observations become more important for the spatially and temporally continuous quantification of aerosol. However, optical remote sensing has the disadvantage that it cannot detect AOD (Aerosol Optical Depth) for the regions covered by clouds or the regions with extremely high concentrations. Such missing values can increase the data uncertainty in the analyses of the Earth's environment. This paper presents a spatial gap-filling framework using a univariate statistical method such as DCT-PLS (Discrete Cosine Transform-based Penalized Least Square Regression) and FMM (Fast Matching Method) inpainting. We conducted a feasibility test for the hourly AOD product from AHI (Advanced Himawari Imager) between January 1 and December 31, 2019, and compared the accuracy statistics of the two spatial gap-filling methods. When the null-pixel area is not very large (null-pixel ratio < 0.6), the validation statistics of DCT-PLS and FMM techniques showed high accuracy of CC=0.988 (MAE=0.020) and CC=0.980 (MAE=0.028), respectively. Together with the AI-based gap-filling method using extra explanatory variables, the DCT-PLS and FMM techniques can be tested for the low-resolution images from the AMI (Advanced Meteorological Imager) of GK2A (Geostationary Korea Multi-purpose Satellite 2A), GEMS (Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer) and GOCI2 (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) of GK2B (Geostationary Korea Multi-purpose Satellite 2B) and the high-resolution images from the CAS500 (Compact Advanced Satellite) series soon.

Korea Augmentation Satellite System (KASS) is a satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) that provides approach procedure with vertical guidance-I (APV-I) level corrections and integrity information to Korea territory. KASS is used to monitor navigation performance in real-time, and this paper introduces the design, implementation, and verification process of mission monitoring (MIMO) in KASS. MIMO was developed in compliance with the Minimum Operational Performance Standards of the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics for Global Positioning System (GPS)/SBAS airborne equipment. In this study, the MIMO system was verified by comparing and analyzing the outputs of reference tools. Additionally, the definition and derivation method of accuracy, integrity, continuity, and availability subject to MIMO were examined. The internal and external interfaces and functions were then designed and implemented. The GPS data pre-processing was minimized during the implementation to evaluate the navigation performance experienced by general users. Subsequently, tests and verification methods were used to compare the obtained results based on reference tools. The test was performed using the KASS dataset, which included GPS and SBAS observations. The decoding performance of the developed MIMO was identical to that of the reference tools. Additionally, the navigation performance was verified by confirming the similarity in trends. As MIMO is a component of KASS used for real-time monitoring of the navigation performance of SBAS, the KASS operator can identify whether an abnormality exists in the navigation performance in real-time. Moreover, the preliminary identification of the abnormal point during the post-processing of data can improve operational efficiency.
