This paper analyzes navigation performances of the Korean Positioning System (KPS) constellation with respect to the orbit parameters which fulfills the specification requirements. Specifically, the satellite configuration and navigation requirements of KPS are explained, and the daily mean horizontal dilution of precision (HDOP) and satellite visibility on KPS coverage are analyzed to confirm the adequate orbit parameters. However, due to orbital slot saturation, geostationary-orbit (GEO) satellites may not be allocated in the original orbit as specified in the KPS requirements. Therefore, in a spanned window of 4 degrees from the reference longitude the navigation performance of each GEO satellite orbit is investigated.

A part of the big differences between LEO(Low Earth Orbit) and GEO(Geostationary Earth Orbit) satellite is that transfer orbit is used or not or what tolerance of the position on the mission orbit is permitted. That is to say, the transfer orbit is not used and the constraint of orbit position is not adapted on LEO satellite. Whereas for GEO satellite case, the transfer orbit shall be used due to the very high altitude and the satellite shall be stayed in the station keeping box which is permitted on the mission orbit. These phases are functions for AOCS mission. The aim of this paper is to introduce the AOCS hardware configuration for COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite). The AOCS hardware of COMS consist of 3 Linear Analogue Sun Sensors (LIASS), 3 Bi-Axis Sun Sensors (BASS), 2 Infra-Red Earth Sensors (IRES), 3 Fiber Optical Gyroscopes (FOG), 5 momentum wheels and 14 thrusters. In this paper, each component is explained how to be used, how to locate and what relation between the AOCS algorithm and these components.

The currently developed propulsion system(PS) is composed of propellant tank, valves, thrusters, interconnecting line assembly and thermal hardwares to prevent propellant freezing in the space environment. Comprehensive engineering analyses in the structure, thermal, flow and plume fields are performed to evaluate main design parameters and to verify their suitabilities concurrently at the design phase. The integrated PS has undergone a series of acceptance tests to verify workmanship, performance, and functionality prior to spacecraft level integration. After all the processes of assembly, integration and test are completed, the PS is integrated with the satellite bus system successfully. At present, the severe environmental tests have been carried out to evaluate functionality performances of satellite bus system. This paper summarizes an overall development process of monopropellant propulsion system for the attitude and orbit control of LEO(Low Earth Orbit) observation satellite from the design engineering up to the integration and test.
The Electric Power Subsystem (EPS) is one of the most critical systems on any satellite because nearly every subsystem requires power. This makes the choice of power systems the most important task facing satellite designers. The main purpose of the Satellite EPS is to provide continuous, regulated and conditioned power to all the satellite subsystems. It has to withstand radiation, thermal cycling and vacuums in hostile space environments, as well as subsystem degradation over time. The EPS power characteristics are determined by both the parameters of the system itself and by the satellite orbit. After satellite separation from the launch vehicle (LV) to its orbit, in almost all situations, the satellite subsystems (attitude determination and control, communication and onboard computer and data handling (OBC&DH)), take their needed power from a storage battery (SB) and solar arrays (SA) besides the consumed power in the EPS management device. At this point (separation point, detumbling mode), the satellite's angular motion is high and the orientation of the solar arrays, with respect to the Sun, will change in a non-uniform way, so the amount of power generated by the solar arrays will be affected. The objective of this research is to select satellite EPS component types, to estimate solar array illumination parameters and to determine the efficiency of solar arrays during both detumbling and normal operation modes.
This study concerns about the orbit prediction and orbit determination of Korean future connumication satellite, called "Moogunghwa" , which will be motioned in the geo-stationary orbit. Perturbation effect on the satellite orbit due to nonspherical term, lunar and solar gravity, drag force of the atmospher, and solar radiation pressure was investigated. Cowell's method is used for orbit prediction. Orbit determination was performed by using Extended Kalman Filter which is suitable for real-time orbit determination. The result shows that the chacteristics of the satellite orbit has east-west and south-north drift. So the periodic control time and control value in the view of the periodic of error can be provided. The orbit determination demonstrated the effectiveness since the convergence performance on the positon and velocity error, and state error standard deviation is reasonable.

The use of GPS receiver at outer space becomes common in low earth orbit. The KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-1 (KOMPSAT-1) which was launched in December 1999 has used GPS receiver's navigation solution to perform the Orbit Determination (OD) in the ground. At the circumstance of using only one ground station, the Orbit Determination using GPS receiver is good method. Because the accuracy of navigation solution acquiring directly from GPS receiver is not enough in satellite application such as map generation, post-processing concepts such as the Precise Orbit Determination (POD) are applied to satellite data processing to improve satellite position accuracy. The POD uses GPS receiver's raw measurement data instead of GPS receiver's navigation solution. The KOrea Multi- Purpose SATellite-2 (KOMPSAT-2) system newly uses the POD technique for large scale map generation. The satellite was launched in the end of July 2006. The satellite sends high resolution images in panchromatic band and multi-spectral bands to the ground. The satellite system uses GPS receivers as source of time synchronization and command reference in the satellite, provider of navigation solution for the OD, and provider of raw measurement data for the POD. In this paper, mechanical configuration and operations of the GPS receiver will be presented. The GPS data characteristics of the satellite such as time synchronization, command reference, the OD using GPS receiver's navigation solution, and the POD using GPS receiver's raw measurement data will be presented and analyzed. The enhancement of performance compared with it of the previous satellite will also be analyzed.
Passive attitude stabilization method has been widely usde for attitude determination and control of cube satellite due to its advantage of system simplicity. The permanent magnet installed on the cube satellite passively controls the attitude of the satellite such that the satellite is aligned with the earth magnetic field. In this paper, on-orbit thermal behavior of the cube satellite with the permanent magnet attitude stabilization method has been investigated through on-orbit thermal analysis. THe orbit profile obtained from the aforementioned attitude control method has been reflected in the analysis. The analysis results indicate that the thermal design proposed in this study is effective for satisfying the temperature requirements of the commericial mission equipments.

Automation of the key flight dynamics operations for the geostationary orbit satellite mission is analyzed and designed. The automation includes satellite orbit determination, orbit prediction, event prediction, and fuel accounting. An object-oriented analysis and design methodology is used for design of the automation system. Automation scenarios are investigated first and then the scenarios are allocated to use cases. Sequences of the use cases are diagramed. Then software components and graphical user interfaces are designed for automation. The automation will be applied to the Communication, Ocean, and Meteorology Satellite (COMS) flight dynamics system for daily routine operations.
Various estimation methods based on Kalman filter have been applied to the real-time satellite orbit determination. The most popular method is the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF). The EKF is easy to implement and to use on orbit determination problem. However, the linearization process of the EKF can cause unstable solutions if the problem has the inaccurate reference orbit, sparse or insufficient observations. In this case, the UKF can be a good alternative because it does not contain linearization process. However, because both methods are based on Gaussian assumption, performance of estimation can become worse when the distribution of state parameters and process/measurement noise are non-Gaussian. In nonlinear/non-Gaussian problems the particle filter which is based on sequential Monte Carlo methods can guarantee more exact estimation results. This study develops and tests the particle filter for satellite orbit determination. The particle filter can be more effective methods for satellite orbit determination in nonlinear/non-Gaussian environment.
