  • This research is aimed at finding out the ecological change of Seunghwanglim through the examination of vegetational change of tree seedlings of old giant trees growing at Seunghwanglim [Seunghwang Forest designated as a Natural Monument No.93] after the installation of protective iron fence. The survey results are as follows: First, as a result of keeping out people by installing a protective iron fence in 1989, soil hardness of the plane forest was greatly improved except the area used as roads. The seedlings of the plane forest, whose damage index is 2,3,4, were found to have the highest 1,202 $individuals/400m^2$, and those of the plane forest, whose damage index is 1, were revealed to have 565 $individuals/400m^2$, and those of the slope forest were found to have 403 $individuals/400m^2$. The number of the young sapling[taller than 2 meters] individuals of the plane forest whose damage index is 1 was found to be the most $48/400m^2$, and that of the plane forest whose damage index is 2, 3, 4- was $31/400m^2$, and that of the slope forest proved to be $14/400m^2$. In the plane forest whose damage index is 2, 3, 4, the saplings of the Ulmus davidiana var. japonica and Acer triflorum are relatively much distributed, and in the plane forest whose damage index is 1, many saplings of the Prunus padus and Styrax obassia, were found to grow and in the slope forest, many saplings of the Acer pictum subsp. mono and Acer pseudo-sieboldianum. were found to grow. Many seedlings of Rubus spp. - R. oldhamii, R. coreanus and R. crataegifolius. - and Akebia quinata were growing vigorously on plane forest, but they might decrease in number with the increasing number of the tree saplings.

  • Profitability was analysed in the fields of various planting densities from 1,666 trees/10a to 4,166 with mulberry grafts or conventional saplings under the consideration of leaf yield and quality. Leaf yield per tree decreased with the higher planting densities. Seasonal and total leaf yield per area, however, increased by 20 to 63% as a mean for 3 years in the densities of 2,083~4,166 trees per 10a than in the conventional density of 1,666 trees per 10a. The increase in leaf yield per area was not so high in the densities over 2,083. Leaf yield in the sapling plots was a little higher than that in the graft plots. Topping of shoot tip affected neither on the branch length nor on yield. Yield was higher in the planting spacing with single raws than in that with double raws. Quality of leaves in the densities from 2,083 to 3,333 trees per 10a was relatively good judged based on the results of the pupation rate and cocoon yield and quality.

  • Regneration process of Abies koreana-Pinus koraiensis community consisted of a subalpione coniferous forest in Mt. Jiri, Korea, was studied in relation to age structure, especially to gap formation. The tall-tree layer (ca. 6.5m) is dominated by Abies koreana and Pinus koraiensis, while lower layer by the sapling and juveniles of A. koreana and Picea jezoensis below 2m tall. The ranges of DBH in A. koreana, P. koraiensis and P. jezonesis were 11.8cm~26.4m, 11.7cm~24.5 cm and 18.2cm~21.7 cm, respectively. The trees below 130 cm tall had contagious distribution, while tall and subtall trees had uniform distribution. The average tree ages of A. koreana, P. koraieniensis and P. jezoensis were 60~70 years, 70~80 years and 70~90 years, respectively. The saplings and juveniles below 20 years in tree ages were occupied over 80% of total trees. The coniferous trees in the gaps or around dead trees were composed of sapligs and juveniles which had emerged or invaded about 20 years before and after the gap formation. The Betula type regeneration of the coniferous forest took place in gaps which orginated from the failing down of a single or a few trees by longevity. Accordingly, it is clear that the subalpine coniferous forest composed of A. koreana of A. koreana, P. koraiensis and P. jezoensis in Mt. jiri was supporting by the regeneration pattern of Betula type.

  • Robinia pseudoacacia is one of most widely cultivated exotic species in Bulgaria. The total area of black locust plantations amounts to 2.9% of the total forest area of the country. 15.34% of the plantations are of management afforestations category, where the priority is given to timber production. They have been created on rich and moisture soils, which are the most appropriate for the species in order to achieve its biological potentials of high productivity. The rest of the available plantations in the country are planted on poorer and drier soils up to 600~800 m altitude. The high adaptive ability of the species to unsuitable environmental conditions as well as the high sprout potential was used for their creation. These stands are mainly done with the aim to protect and ameliorate damaged environments and production of small-size timber and fire woods. They are cultivated until 15-20 years and are revived by sprouts. Therefore the management goals searched, 45.69% of those forests are low productive and 38.97% with average productiveness. The present report deals with growth and productivity capacity of black locust plantations; production of sowing materials; production of reproductive and vegetative saplings for afforestation; the technological aspects of afforestation works; the management and use of black locust plantations as well as some more important diseases and pests affecting the species. The report is entirely based on Bulgarian scientific research works and experience with the Robinia preudoacacia. Recommendations for optimizing the use of species are given.

  • Much controversy has been generated over whether the ecological restoration project in Korea is faithful to the basic approach of ecological restoration compared to projects aimed at creating parks or green spaces. This study was aimed at understanding the level of awareness of practitioners in the planting design method, which is recognized as relatively important in landscape architecture and ecological restoration. The proficiency of practitioners in planting design techniques for ecological restoration projects was investigated and analyzed in seven areas: overall planting design awareness, plant species selection method, planting tree sizes, planting density, use of native species, vegetation climatic zone, soil environment, and weed control. There was no statistically significant difference between the group who thought they were experts in the field of ecological restoration and the group who thought they were experts in the field of parks and green spaces. Moreover, there was no statistically significant difference between the degree of work performance, that is, the group whose main industry was ecological restoration, the group that performed relatively more ecological restoration work, and the group that rarely performed it. Therefore, to apply desirable ecological restoration techniques in the future and to clearly differentiate between the approach in the field of parks and green spaces, the appropriate tree size or planting density selected in the ecological restoration planting design stage must be chosen. To this end, the awareness of expert groups must be improved and related laws, systems, and guidelines must be revised.

  • Quercus dentata (Thunb. ex Murray) is a major tree found in dry habitats such as limestone areas of Korea. In order to characterize the ecological traits of Q. dentata, we treated Q. dentata saplings under four gradient levels of major environment factors such as light, soil moisture and nutrients for 5 months in a glass house. We then measured and analyzed growth differences among them. Regarding light, aboveground, belowground and plant biomass were highest at a high gradient and lowest at a low one. The root/shoot ratio was highest at the highest light gradient. Regarding moisture, no measured items were significantly affected by the moisture gradient. Regarding nutrients, aboveground, belowground and plant biomass were the highest at a slightly high gradient and the lowest at a gradient lower or higher than this. The root/shoot ratio was not significantly affected by the nutrient gradient. From these results, it was shown that the growth of Q. dentata was more affected by light and nutrients in the environment than moisture.
