Affecting Factors Related to Oral Health Conditions of Workers (근로자의 상실치아 실태와 관련요인)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the health behavior and the oral health status of workers engaged in a manufacturing business, and to analyze the related factors that affect their number if teeth loss. References for the study involved the materials of 526 individuals whose occupational categories are of a manufacturing business, amongst the survey participants in seven city or gun (county) area including Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongju-si, Mungyeong-si, Chilgok-gun, Yecheon-gun and Sangju-gun for the Community Health Survey (CHS) conducted in 2008. The CHS 2008 was conducted for three months from September to November 2008, and the survey details utilized in the study included the number of loss of teeth and teeth-brushing frequency, which was a part of CHS questionnaires and also additionally included for the study. The analysis with respect to the number of teeth loss on sociodemographic factors, was found to be significantly related to the age, educational status, average monthly income and occupation (p<.01). In the $x^2$-test in terms of the oral health status and the number of teeth loss, it was found that the teeth-brushing after lunch (p<.05) and an experience in an oral examination were statistically significant factors (p<.01). According to the multiple-regression analysis with the number of teeth loss being a dependent variable, the age, educational status, marital status and subjective oral health status were the statistically significant (p<.01). In conclusion, it is important to provide education on the teeth-brushing subjected to workers engaged in a manufacturing business with many dental caries and low educational status, and to recommend a regular scaling as well as to establish policy for creating conditions upon an oral health check-up and a tooth scaling and thus allow the maintenance of an oral health.

Volatile Flavor Components of Wild Chopi (Zanthoxylum piperitum De Candolle) Leaf (야생 초피(Zanthoxylum piperitum De Candolle)잎의 향기성분)

  • Wild Chopi leaves were harvested near Chounghwa Mt. Sangju city in Kyungpook province. Chopi leaves were dried naturally and crushed with and without blanching. From mechanical analysis(GC). fifty five peaks were identified as volatile materials in no blanching leaf. Among the fifty five peaks, twenty three peaks were identified as hydrocarbones(dodecane, sabinene, myrcene etc.), ten peaks as alcohols (isobutylalcohol. cis-pentenol, 1-pentenol, 1-penten-3-ol etc.), seven peaks as aldehydes (3-methylbua-tanal, hexanal, 2,6-dimethyl hept-5-al etc.), four peaks as ketones(3-hydroxy-2-butanone, 2-nonanone, 2-undecanone, 2-tridecanone) and six peaks as esters ( cis-3-hexenyl acetate, linalyl acetate. citronellyl acetate, nervy acetate etc.). Other peaks were founded as 3-cyano-2,5-dimethylpyrazine, dimethyl sulfide, chloroform, 1,8 cineole. Thirty five peaks were identified as volatile materials in blanching leaf. Twenty peaks were identified as hydrocarbones(1,1-oxybis-ethane, $\alpha$-pinene, camphene. myrcene, $\beta$-phellan-drene, $\beta$-caryophyllene etc.), as alcohol(L-linalool, (-)-isopulgerol, $\alpha$-terpineol. citronellol etc.), as aldehydes(nonanal, citronellal), as ketones(2-undecanone, 2-tridecanone etc.) and as esteres(citronellyl acetate. cis-3-hexenyl acetate, neryl acetate etc.). Other peaks were found as 3-cyano-2,5-dimethyl-pyrazine. The amount of volatile materials such as $\alpha$-pinene, myrcene, $\beta$-phellanderene, L-linalool, citronellal, citronellyl acetate, $\beta$-caryophyllene were detected abundantly among the volatile materials.

Physiological Activities of Korean and Chinese Viola mandshurica Extracts (국내산과 중국산 자화지정(Viola mandshurica) 추출물의 생리활성)

  • This study was carried out to compare the physiological activities of the extracts from Korean and Chinese Viola mandshurica W. Baker. The water extract from leaves of Chinese V. mandshurica exhibited the highest extraction yields of 30.45 g/100 g and the highest content of total flavonoids as 102.30 mg/g. Also, its ethanol extract showed the best content of polyphenol compounds as 136.16 mg/g. The leaf extract of Korean V. mandshurica produced higher electron donating abilities (EDA) of 92.69% (KLW) and 93.61% (KLE) than the other fractions. The strongest SOD-like activity was shown in the ethanol extract from Korean leaves of 17.28% at the concentration of 1.0 mg/mL. The nitrite scavenging abilities (NSA) of the leaf extracts of V. mandshurica from China were intense over 50% at pH 1.2 and 3.0. In the results of inhibitory rates of xanthine oxidase (XO), both ethanol extracts from Korean and Chinese leaves were higher than the other fractions as 98.67% and 93.80% respectively. Effect of tyrosinase inhibition was the highest in the water extract (45.04%) of Chinese leaves, followed by its ethanol extract (31.36%). The results of EDA, SOD-like activity and XO inhibition of the leaf extracts from Korean V. mandshurica were higher than those of Chinese, on the other hand, determinations on total polyphenol contents, NSA and tyrosinase inhibition were higher in those of Chinese.

Compensation and Amendment of Highway Travel Demand Forecasting (고속도로 교통수요 보정모형에 관한 고찰)

  • In this study, a model of compensation and amendment of forecasted travel demand was developed to calculate the range of values depends on the changes in the risk factors, selecting factors that might affect traffic demand changes among risk factors. Selected factors are as follows: influenced area population, the number of registrated vehicle per person, ratio of service industry workers, and city intervals. Then this model is applied to six routes of expressway and the calculated value were compensated with error rate being reflected on each quartile value with respect to influenced area population (200,000 people standards). Result from appling developed model to Cheongwon-Sangju expressway suggests that the model could compensate the error rate by more than 50%, which in turn validate the effectiveness of the model developed. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been identified.

Health Behavior and Health Condition of the Rural Young-Old and the Rural Old-Old in an Agricultural District (농촌 전기노인과 후기노인의 건강행태와 건강상태)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to garner useful information through a comparative analysis of health behaviors and health states between the young-old and old-old elderly in a rural Korean area. Methods: We define the young-old elderly as those 65 to 74 years of age, and the old-old as those over 70. The survey was administered in October and November of 2009 at senior citizen centers in Sangju City, Kyongsangbuk-do, South Korea. The number of subjects surveyed approximated the demographics of the aged population of the administrative district of centers of 24 eup, myeon, and dong. Results: Compared with the young-old elderly, the old-old were vulnerable to population sociological characteristics. While there were many cases of contraction of diseases, only a small percentage of old-old elderly were engaged in regular exercise. In addition, the old-old elderly lagged behind the young-old in terms of physical activity, mental and oral health, hearing, and vision. Conclusions: The vulnerability of the old-old elderly in terms of physical and mental health needs to be acknowledged as various characteristics of the elderly that appears according an age group. A variety of disease prevention and health promotion programs that focus on the health behavior and status of the young-old and old-old elderly need to be developed and put into practice.

Analysis of Spatial Changes in the Forest Landscape of the Upper Reaches of Guem River Dam Basin according to Land Cover Change (토지피복변화에 따른 금강 상류 댐 유역 산림 경관의 구조적 변화 분석)

  • Forests within watersheds are essential in maintaining ecosystems and are the central infrastructure for constructing an ecological network system. However, due to indiscriminate development projects carried out over past decades, forest fragmentation and land use changes have accelerated, and their original functions have been lost. Since a forest's structural pattern directly impacts ecological processes and functions in understanding forest ecosystems, identifying and analyzing change patterns is essential. Therefore, this study analyzed structural changes in the forest landscape according to the time-series land cover changes using the FRAGSTATS model for the dam watershed of the Geum River upstream. Land cover changes in the dam watershed of the Geum River upstream through land cover change detection showed an increase of 33.12 square kilometers (0.62%) of forests and 67.26 square kilometers (1.26%) of urbanized dry areas and a decrease of 148.25 square kilometers (2.79%) in agricultural areas from the 1980s to the 2010s. The results of no-sampling forest landscape analysis within the watershed indicated landscape percentage (PLAND), area-weighted proximity index (CONTIG_AM), average central area (CORE_MN), and adjacency index (PLADJ) increased, and the number of patches (NP), landscape shape index (LSI), and cohesion index (COHESION) decreased. Identification of structural change patterns through a moving window analysis showed the forest landscape in Sangju City, Gyeongsangbuk Province, Boeun County in Chungcheongbuk Province, and Jinan Province in Jeollabuk Province was relatively well preserved, but fragmentation was ongoing at the border between Okcheon County in Chungcheongbuk Province, Yeongdong and Geumsan Counties in Chungcheongnam Province, and the forest landscape in areas adjacent to Muju and Jangsu Counties in Jeollabuk Province. The results indicate that it is necessary to establish afforestation projects for fragmented areas when preparing a future regional forest management strategy. This study derived areas where fragmentation of forest landscapes is expected and the results may be used as basic data for assessing the health of watershed forests and establishing management plans.
