  • Many of the bridge systems, including the girders and cross-beams, and concrete decks behave as the special othotropic plates. A method of calculating the natural frequency corresponding to the first mode of vibration of beam and tower structures with irregular cross-sections was developed and reported by D. H. Kim in 1974. Since 1989, The author has extended this method to Vibration analysis of two dimensional problems including composite laminates, and has reported at several conferenes. Frequently, the bridge floor panels are supported by girders and cross beams. Such panels as well as some of the building floor panels can be assumed as simple supported special orthotropic plates. In this paper, the result of application of simple method of vibration analysis developed by D. H. Kim, to the simply supported sandwich panels with point Mass/Masses is presented.

  • Sandwich structures, which are composed of a thick core between two faces, are commonly used in many engineering applications because they combine high stiffness and strength with low weight. Accordingly, the usage of sandwich structure is very widely applied to the aircraft, the automobile and marine industry, etc., because of these advantages. In this paper, we have investigated the buckling protection of an inner structure plate and the useful corrugated configuration for contact, and the fabrication method of the inner structure plate for large area using the continuous molding process. Also, we have guaranteed the accuracy of the molding process through the micro corrugated mold fabrication and secured the accuracy and analyzed aspect properties of the inner structure plate fabricated for a large area using the partial mold process.

  • In this paper, a refined higher-order shear deformation theory including the stretching effect is developed for the analysis of bending analysis of the simply supported functionally graded (FG) sandwich plates resting on elastic foundation. This theory has only five unknowns, which is even less than the other shear and normal deformation theories. The theory presented is variationally consistent, without the shear correction factor. The present one has a new displacement field which introduces undetermined integral variables. Equations of motion are obtained by utilizing the Hamilton's principles and solved via Navier's procedure. The convergence and the validation of the proposed theoretical numerical model are performed to demonstrate the efficacy of the model.

  • This paper experimentally investigates the characteristics of Al-honeycomb sandwich panels which are considered as a promising primary strength member of weight critical large structures. Some tests on the aluminum honeycomb panels subject to 3-point bending or uniaxial compression or crushing load are carried out. Based on the test results, linear elastic response, buckling/ultimate strength and crushing/energy absorption capacity are discussed. Some guidelines for design of aluminum honeycomb panels are given.

  • In this paper we developed Composite-Smart-Structures(CSS) using sandwich structure composed of Glass/Epoxy laminates and Nomex honeycomb and microstrip antenna. Transmission/reflection theory shows that antenna performances can be improved due to multiple reflection by Glass/Epoxy facesheet, and honeycomb is used for air gap between antenna and facesheet. Stacked radiating patches are used for the wideband. Facesheet and honeycomb thicknesses are selected considering both wideband and high gain. Measured electrical performances show that CSS has wide bandwidth over $10\%$ and higher gain by 3.5dBi than initially designed antenna, and no doubt it has excellent mechanical performances by sandwich effect given by composite laminates and honeycomb core. The CSS concept can be extended to give a useful guide for manufacturers of structural body panels as well as antenna designers, promising innovative future communication technology.

  • Composites are very useful material for light train carbody due to its high specific strength and lightweight characteristics. The composites, called 3-D board, are developed with a special stitching method. In this process, the glass fiber fabrics of skin material and foam core material are stitched together with glass fiber thread. The glass thread in Z-axis turns into FRP form. The conventional delamination problem can be solved with 3-D sandwich structure. In addition, with the lower density of foam, the weight of the panel and the operation expenses can be highly reduced. To evaluate the usefulness of the 3-D board, the double-deck light train carbody is studied. The stress analyses are carried out under various loads and boundary conditions with FEM Code, ANSYS. On comparing with the aluminum carbody, 3-D board carbody can be reduced by about 2 ton for the total weight of carbody.

  • In this paper, a comparative study of metallic and non-metallic stiffened plates under a lateral pressure load is performed using conventional statistically determinate and SQP(Sequential Quadratic Programming) optimisation approaches. Initially, a metallic flat-bar stiffened plate is exemplified from the superstructure of a marine vessel and, subsequently, its structural topology is varied as hat-section stiffened FRP(Fibre Reinforced Plastics) single skin plates and monocoque FRP sandwich plates having a PVC foam core. These proposed structural alternatives are analysed using elastic closed-form solutions and SQP optimisation method under stress and deflection limits obtained from practice to calculate and optimise geometry dimensions and weights. Results obtained from the comparative study provide useful information for marine designers especially at the preliminary design stage where various building materials and structural configurations are dealt with.

  • In this study, the structural design method for the modified long-endurance UAV is presented. Composite materials using room temperature curing method and wet lay up procedure is applied to all wing structures. The modified wing is composed of 3-piece component for improvement of ground handling. As the sandwich structure is efficient for light weight and high stiffness, all skin is used the sandwich consisting of glass/ epoxy fabric and balsa wood. The proof test is performed up to limit load corresponding to 4g load condition for the modified wing structure.

  • In part 1. optimal process parameters such as thickness of stopper and welding time are achieved to produce high strength ISB(Inner Structured and Bonded) panels. Developed process is different from the usual resistance welding process in the number of points welded at a time. In part 2, Numerical modeling for this new process is proposed and the variation of contact area with respect to the gap of electrodes is studied through FE analyses, Besides, it is tried to figure out the welding nugget formation and proper distance between welding points. FE analytic results show that inner structures are melted more than skin plate, and current distribution between points to be welded can be controlled by distance welding points. Comparison of some FE analytic results with corresponding experimental results could confirm the validity of the proposed numerical modeling.

  • In the present paper, the nonlocal strain gradient refined model is used to study the thermal stability of sandwich nanoplates integrated with piezoelectric layers for the first time. The influence of Kerr elastic foundation is also studied. The present model incorporates two small-scale coefficients to examine the size-dependent thermal stability response. Elastic properties of nanoplate made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) are supposed to vary through the thickness direction and are estimated employing a modified power-law rule in which the porosity with even type of distribution is approximated. The governing differential equations of embedded sandwich piezoelectric porous nanoplates under hygrothermal loading are derived through Hamilton's principle where the Galerkin method is applied to solve the stability problem of the nanoplates with simply-supported edges. It is indicated that the thermal stability characteristics of the porous nanoplates are obviously influenced by the porosity volume fraction and material variation, nonlocal parameter, strain gradient parameter, geometry of the nanoplate, external voltage, temperature and humidity variations, and elastic foundation parameters.
