  • The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the workability, compressive and flexural strength properties of rapid-set concrete with various mixture. The kinds of fine aggregate(river sand, sea sand, crushed sand), water-cement ratio(40%, 45%, 50%), sand-aggrega to ratio(33%, 36%, 39%) were chosen as the experimental parameters. Test variables are temperature of concrete, slump, air contents, compressive and flexural strength. The compressive and flexural strength for 3 hours and 6 hours were tested. As result, it was shown that temperature of concrete involved 45$^{\circ}C$, some time later decreased. The workability were decreasing in steps as the sand-aggregate ratio increased and crushed sand was the highest value. Higher compressive and flexural strength was shown following the order of river sand, sea sand, crushed sand regardless of sand-aggregate ratio. But the values of gap was just a little.

  • This paper investigated the engineering properties of cement mortar mixed with more than 2 kinds of sand. For fresh mortar properties, unit volume weight is constant regardless of mixing content and type of sand. An increase in contents of river and crushed sand resulted in an increase in flow, whereas an increase in recycled sand contents reduced flow. Gap between maximum flow in N3C0R0 and minimum flow in N0C0R3 exhibited about $12\%$. Compressive strength at 28 days ranged from 32 to 36 MPa in order for crushed sand, river sand and recycled sand. Mortar with mixed sand along with river sand and crushed sand showed compressive strength comparable to crushed sand. An increase of fraction of recycled sand in mixed sand resulted in a decrease in compressive strength. For drying shrinkage, N0C0R3 had the largest drying shrinkage among various mixture type. The combination of large contents of recycled sand and small contents of river and crushed sand had a large amount of drying shrinkage.

  • Recently, geofiber(polyester) reinforced soil was added on soil-seed mixture spray to control erosion and to improve vegetation growth on rocky slope sites. This research was conducted to compare vegetation effects and soil hardness on three types of soil-seed mixture spray on stone gabion river bank [A type : soil-seed mixture spray underlying 30cm thick sand with geofiber(geofiber reinforced soil system), B type : soil-seed mixture spray underlying 30cm thick sand without geofiber, C type : soil-seed mixture spray]. Evaluation were made concerning vegetation coverage, soil hardness and moisture content. The results of this study showed that A type system was effective for the growth of vegetation and soil hardness when compareed to B type and C type. A type and B type showed higher covering rate than C type on stone gabion river bank, and especially A type showed the highest covering rate. Soil hardness and water content were high on A type vegetation system compared to B type and C type. We noted that high soil hardness and high moisture content with geofiber(geofiber reinforced soil system) were effective both to control erosion from water current impact and to be high coverage and species of vegetation on stone gabion river bank.

  • The strength of granular mixtures can be controlled by the majority of the mixture, fine grains. However, in some cases, the small amount of gravel in the mixture may influence the strength of the mixture. In this study, the effect of some dispersed gravels on strength of sand is evaluated. Gravels are embedded in the middle of each cemented sand layer. The size and number of embedded gravels varies. After two days curing, a series of unconfined compression tests is performed on the cemented sand with dispersed gravels. In addition to that, a series of direct shear tests is also carried out on clean sand with gravels to evaluate its friction angle. For the specimens with the same ratio of gravel weight of 7% in which gravel size and number are different, an unconfined compressive strength(UCS) of a specimen with gravels decreases up to 15% compared to a specimen without gravel and then increases with increasing gravel number. For specimens embedded with the same size of gravel, UCS decreases and then increases as a number of gravel increases. As a number of gravel increases, a friction angle of clean sand with gravels decreases up to $5^{\circ}$ and then recovers up to that of a specimen without gravel.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the characteristics of waste foundry sand (WFS) and the asphalt mixture made of a foundry waste sand. To estimate the applicability of WFS, chemical and physical properties were measured by XRF(X-ray fluorescent), and SEM(Scanning electronic microfilm). To improve the stripping resistance of WFS asphalt mixture, anti-stripping agents (a hydrated lime and a liquid anti-stripping agent) were used. To improve tensile properties and durability of WFS asphalt concrete mixture, LDPE(low-density polyethylene) was used as an asphalt modifier Marshall mix design, indirect tensile strength, tensile strength ratio(TSR) after freezing and thawing, moisture susceptibility and wheel tracking tests were carried out to evaluate performance of WFS asphalt concrete. Comparing with conventional asphalt concrete, WFS asphalt concretes showed similar or the better qualify in mechanical properties, and satisfied all specification limits. Therefore, it Is concluded that waste foundry sand can be recycled as an asphalt pavement material.

  • This paper examines the incorporation of the crushed sand (CS) and desert sand (DS) in the formation of self compacting concrete (SCC). These sands have been substituted for the rolled sand (RS), which is currently the only sand used in concretes and which is likely to run out in our country. DS, which comes from the Tunisian Sahara in the south, is characterized by a tight distribution of grains size. CS, a by-product of careers containing a significant amount of fines up to 15%, is characterized by a spread out granulometry having a maximum diameter of around 5mm. These two sands are considered as aggregates for the SCC. This first part of the study consists in analyzing the influence of the type of sand on the parameters of composition of the SCC. These sands consist of several combinations of 3 sands (DS, CS and RS). The method of formulation of the adopted SCC is based on the filling of the granular void by the paste. The CS substitution to the RS made it possible, for all the proportions, to decrease the granular voids, to increase the compactness of the mixture and to decrease the water and adding fillers proportioning. These results were also obtained for a moderate substitution of DS/CS (< 40%) and a weak ratio of DS/RS (20%). For higher proportions, the addition of DS to CS or RS did not improve the physical characteristics of the SCC granular mixture.

  • Strength and deformation characteristics of oyster shell-sand mixtures were investigated to utilize waste oyster shell being treated as a waste material. Standard penetration test (SPT) is a common method to obtain in-situ strength in sand. However, in case of oyster shell-sand mixtures, there was no information between SPT N-value and internal friction angle of mixture soils. In this paper SPT experiments from several large scaled model chamber tests and large scaled direct shear tests were carried out with varying unit weight of oyster shell-sand mixtures. Appropriate correlations were in tile study observed among N-value, unit weight and internal friction angle, which make it possible to estimate in-situ strength from SPT and the coefficient of volume compressibility from the confined compression tests to compute the settlement of oyster shell-sand mixtures.

  • In this study sodium chloride solution is employed for chemicals, and several cylindrical triaxial tests are performed on the sand-bentonite mixtures saturated with sodium chloride solution. Deformation(elastic modulus, E) and strength(cohesion, c', and angle of friction, f') parameters are obtained from the triaxial tests as functions of confining pressure and sodium chloride solution concentrations. The results here indicate an increase in the value of effective cohesion with increase in the concentration of NaCl solution, which can be explained by using the Gouy-Chapman model. The value of the effective angle of shearing resistance does not show significant change with the increase in concentration of NaCl solution. The Young's modulus also increases with the increase in concentration of NaCl solution.

  • The amount used of aggregates for concrete is increasing rapidly since the mid-1980s in Korea. The natural gravels from river are already displaced with crushed stone, and use of crushed sand as a substitute of natural river sands, also, is getting increased day by day. This paper is presented for mixture of high strength concrete using crushed sands. Mixing design of concretes are various water-cement ratios(w/c) such as 25%, 40%, 55% and different replacement ratio of crushed sands to natural sands such as 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%. As a results, it has been shown that compressive strength of concretes with w/c lower than 40% and 25% is higher than $400kgf/cm^2$ and $600kgf/cm^2$ respectively.

  • Recently, the recycling of the by-products was attempted to various fields. One of the major industry, the copper manufacturing industry produced a lot slags. in this study, the copper smelting slag was used to use practically application for the aggregate of concrete. To find the optimum mixing ratio of mortar with the copper smelting slag as substitution for sand, the mixing ratio was increased 1:2 to 1:5 step by step and every mixture was contained 5 steps sand substitutive ratio. The substitutive ratio of sand was increased 25% st대 by step from 0% to 100%. The result of this study was shown as follows. 1. In the every mixture, as the substitutive ratio was increased, the flow was decrease 3.64% from 18cm, and the unit content weigth was increased 5.5% in average. 2. The property of the strength was judged that it was more affected W/C and mixing ratio than the copper smelting slag.
