I introduce the Flexible Dam Operation (FDO) and some of sediment control techniques In dams which are implemented as trials to avoid or reduce environmental impact of dams on the downstream reaches. The FDO is a dam management method to improve river environment in the downstream reaches by means of the flushing flow, the maintenance flow and so on utilizing a vacant portion of capacity for flood control without interrupting prime flood control function during the rainy/typhoon season. It Is suggested by the guideline of the FDO that EDO should be implemented regularly after the trial for about three years. The basic conception of the FDO is described here. The example of excavation of deposited sediments in check dams and placement of sand ana gravel immediately downstream of the dams and the example of coordinated sediment flushing are described as some of sediment control techniques in dams. Now they are at the stage of experiment and trial. Therefore, it is important to increase examples and establish the technical methodology and the environmental evaluation method for them.
A Lagrangian approach based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate large and/or sharp deformations and fragmentations of interfaces, including free surfaces, through tracing each particle with physical quantities. According to the concept of the particle-based CFD method, it is possible to apply it to both fluid particles and solid particles such as sand, gravel, and rock. However, the presence of more than two different phases in the same domain can make it complicated to calculate the interaction between different phases. In order to solve multiphase problems, particle interaction models for multiphase problems, including surface tension, buoyancy-correction, and interface boundary condition models, were newly adopted into the moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method. The newly developed MPS method was used to simulate a typical validation problem involving dam breaking. Because the soil and other particles, excluding the water, may have different viscosities, various viscosity coefficients were applied in the simulations for validation. The newly developed and validated MPS method was used to simulate the mobile beds induced by broken dam flows. The effects of the viscosity on soil particles were also investigated.
In order to use fundamental data for conservation of species diversity and stream health with dam development, fish investigation in up- and downstream of Pyeonglim Dam was seasonally conducted in 2007~2008. In addition, data of water qualities, investigated for environmental impact assessment, were used to determine a water quality standard level in Pyeonglim Stream, and it revealed that water environment condition was good in the stream. During the study period, a total number of fish caught from the 4 study sites was 5,449 representing 9 families 25 species, and there were 8 Korean endemic species (32.0%) including Rhodeus uyekii, Squalidus gracilis majimae, and Microphysogobio yaluensis. Two species of Zacco temminckii (37.5%) and Zacco platypus (26.3%) were dominant and subdominant in all sites. There were few individuals of the $2^{nd}$-class endangered species (Sand lamprey, Lampetra reissneri) and the introduced species (Bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus), found in the upstream of the dam. and further investigation for conservation of the endangered species and for prevention of the introduced species is needed in future. With fish fauna and multi-metric health assessment model in each sampling attempt, index of biotic integrity(IBI) was evaluated and it resulted mostly in good(26~35) and excellent(36~40) condition in all sites. The results indicate that it is very important to study not only environmental impact assessment with fish composition but also stream health assessment in order to conserve healthy aquatic ecosystem.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of prechlorination and algae growth on THMs generation. The sample water obtained from Paldang Dam which is a main source of raw water for the Seoul metropolitan area. THMs concentration in the sample water was investigated in water treatment process prechlorifiation, chemical coagulation, and sand filtration. And also, THMs concentration were analyzed in the water which cultured algae in laboratory. The results were as follows 1. The THMs concentration produced by prechlorination unit process were increased in control (not purified) but decreased in process of purification. 2. The THMs concertration can reduce by increasing the number of cleaning filters. 3. The main precursor in raw water for the THMs generation was supplied by algae growth. So as to reduce the THMs concentration in water supplying system, it is the best method to manage algae growth in water body of Paldang reservoir.
The number of researches on the mechanical properties of cemented sand and gravel (CSG) materials and the application of the CSG Dam has been increased. In order to explain the technical scheme of strength prediction model about the artificial neural network, we obtained the sample data by orthogonal test using the PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol) fiber, different amount of cementing materials and age, and established the efficient evaluation and prediction system. Combined with the analysis about the importance of influence factors, the prediction accuracy was above 95%. This provides the scientific theory for the further application of CSG, and will also be the foundation to apply the artificial neural network theory further in water conservancy project for the future.

The aim of this thesis, when water permeates dam, is to study the shape of seepage line and seepage quantity. As for the process, various sand model dams of same capacity were constructed in the water tank : they are a central, middle, inclined, up and down stream point of which is paralled, and filter-installed types. And the slope of seepage line and seepage quantity in these various models for experiment were measured, observed data were analyzed, and several formulas which already published were compared and examined. As for the shape of seepage line, the relation between upstream water level and exit: slope of seepage line, near the entrance and exit point, geometrically similar model, and the shape of seepage line filter-installed were examined. As regards to the seepage quantity, several formulas which already published and testing result values were compared and examined, and relation with the slope of seepage line, the seepage quantity, the slope of upstream point, and the upstream water level were mutually studied. Particulary, when horizontal filter was installed, propriety of the existing formulas for effective filter length w as examined, and the relative position of exit point in various. conditions was also studied.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term habitat morphological alteration resulting from a large dam and weirs in the Tamjin River. To achieve this, we carried out a hydrograph analysis and a substrate size distribution analysis. We also estimated the channel width, bar area and vegetation encroachment using aerial photographs taken before and after the construction of the dam and weirs. The result of the hydrological analysis showed that flooding downstream was greatly reduced with small peaks occurrence after the dam construction. Interestingly, normal hydrographs in the main channel appeared just after tributary conjunction. There was a similar pattern in the substrate size analysis. Despite coarsened substrate just downstream of the dam site, more sand appeared again after introduction of the tributary. However, there was an increase in the bar area downstream of the dam's channels with most bars covered with vegetation. The channel width increased at the upper area of weirs through impoundment, but decreased downstream because of vegetation encroachment. This study indicate that unregulated tributary plays an important role in restoring hydro-physical habitat conditions in mainstream channels below a large dam. However, numerous weirs could be a causal factor to accelerate habitat deterioration in the dam downstream channels.

The present paper illustrates the outcome of the monitoring of the consolidation behavior of a soft foundation soil under a large submerged sand embankment. Measurements of settlements and excess pore water pressures showed a good agreement with predictions evaluated using the large strain consolidation theory. Soft soil improvement by means of deep mixing has been optimized. Moreover, the principles and developments of underwater geosynthetics applications are discussed.
Numerical analysis was performed to investigate the effect of heavy metal contamination on neighboring environment in case a dam is constructed by using rockfill materials contaminated by heavy metals. The numerical simulation carried out in this research includes both subsurface flow and contaminant transport in the inside of the CFRD(Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam), using two commercial programs, SEEP2D and FEMWATER. The three representative cases of scenarios were chosen to consider a variety of cases occurring in a dam site; (1) Scenario 1 : no crack in the concrete face slab, (2) Scenario 2 : a crack In the upper part of face slab, and (3) Scenario 3 : a crack between plinth and face slab in the lower part of face slab. As a result of seepage analysis, the amount of seepage in scenario 2 was calculated as $14.31\sim14.924m^3/day$ per unit width, corresponding to the 1,000 times higher value than that in other scenarios. Also, in the simulation of contaminant transport by using FEMWATER, specified contaminant concentration of 13 ppb in main rockfill zone was set to consider continuous leakage from the rock materials. Through the analysis of contaminant transport, we found that elapsed times to take for the contaminant concentration of about 2 ppb to arrive at the end of a dam are as follows. Scenario 1 has the elapsed time of 55,000 years. In Scenario 2. it is 50 years. Finally, scenario 3 has 27,000 years. The rapid transport of the contaminant in scenario 2 was attributed to greater seepage flow by 500 times than other scenarios. Although, in case of upper crack in the face slab, it was identified that the contaminant might transport to the end of a dam within 100 years with about 2 ppb concentration, however, it happened that the contaminant was hardly transported out of the dam in other scenarios, which correspond to either no crack or a crack between plinth and face slab. In conclusion, the numerical analysis showed that the alternative usage of the contaminated sand and gravel as the dam embankment material can be one of the feasible methods with the assumption that the cracks in a face slab could be controlled adequately.
The Hoelyongpo in the Naeseong River as tributary basin of the Nakdong River is broadly well-known a tourist attraction, which is made of sandy beach, and is called "Island of Inland". But Construction of the Dam was planned at upstream of river. In other words, an influx of sediment is blocked from upstream of river. In this situation, through sediment discharge coming from tributary of the Naeseong river, the whether to go ahead of sand beach of the Hoelyongpo is analyzed by using 1-D and 2-D model. The sediment discharge is estimated through ratio raw with basin area, and the instream flow requirement of river coming from dam and the flow rate and sediment coming from tributary are inputted for model. The 1-D model uses HEC-6 and the 2-D model uses SMS(RMA2 and SED2D). The analysis using the HEC-6 is performed from cross section data 10 year ago to the present cross section. Consequently, Yang equation presenting similar result to the present cross section data is determined, using this, the prediction is conducted for the cross section after 20 years. The 2-D analysis is conducted for the present cross section data. The value of distinction between a deposition and erosion with the results presented in the 1, 2-D models is occur, however, the appearance between the deposition and the erosion is similar.
