From the 1997 to January, 2004, a groin 156m long was constructed at the mouth of the Heoya river-mouth as a protection and barrier. To understand the changes to Jinha beach from the blockade of the river mouth, several aerial photographs, etc., were compared, which showed that the changes were significant. Comparing these results to the state of the area before construction of the groin, the blockade of the river was relaxed, but the formation of the tombolo, in the middle groin area was accelerated and the total Jinha beach erosion and especially the erosion of the southern part of Jinha beach was developed. But according to statements by residents and some current documents, the blockade of the Heoya-river mouth is still underway at the surrounding areas of the groin and chronic dredged sand has been used for littoral nourishment at the northern part of the middle groin and on Jinha beach. The result of numerical simulation based on the present state shows that if this sort of dredging is stopped, the sand accumulation will progress near the river mouth groin and the existing tombolo at the middle groin will progress to the north and severe erosion will occur at the southern coastline near the middle groin and the farthest southern part of Jinha beach, and Jinha beach itself will experience a gradual erosion. The main reason for these erosions should be the typhoons that are happening during the summer season. To provide protection from these kinds of undesirable erosions, a total of 23 numerical simulations have been done. It has been shown that submerged breakwaters at the front area of the beach will be efficient to protect from main beach erosion, but there should be alternative proposals for the influence of the river mouth blockade.
The Doowoo-ri tidal flat in the southwestern Korean coast is a typical open-coast tidal flat which has no barriers in the offshore such as barrier island and sand bars. The difference of induced wave energy with seasons is affected directly on the distribution of surface sediment and the formation of sedimentary structures because the sedimentation by wind wave is relatively much important element in this open-coast tidal flat. This open-coast tidal flat can be classified into tidal beach, intertidal flat and lower mudflat according to the pattern of geomorphology and sediment type. The intertidal flat can be again divided into 3 types: sand flat, mixed flat and mud flat based on the primary sedimentary structure and sand/mud ratio. Doowoori tidal flat shows a seasonal change in the surface sedimentary facies based on sediment composition and primary sedimentary structure. The change is closely related to the direction and magnitude of monsoon wind and also to storm frequency. In winter and spring, when northwesterly wind is most dominant and strong and also storms are common, sand-flat facies is largely distributed on the intertidal flat, whereas mud-flat facies is most dominant during summer when weak southeasterly wind is common. In the fall season, mixed-flat facies is dominant on the flat. The Doowoori intertidal flat is covered by mud sediment which is ca. 20 cm in thickness in summer season. In winter season, surface sediment is changed from mud to sand because the summer mud is mostly eroded by strong wave action. Can-core peels in the intertidal flat show that parallel laminated mud or sand/mud and climbing ripple cross-laminated sandy silt are dominant on the upper intertidal flat $(0-1.3 {\cal}km)$ during summer season. On the other hand, on lower intertidal flat $(1.7-2.3 {\cal}km)$, dominant sedimentary facies is homogeneous mud. In winter, it is changed into parallel laminated and ripple cross-laminated sand facies.
An ecological study was conducted to determine the geographic distribution, community structure, and habitat characteristics of eelgrass, Zostera marina L. beds along the southern coast of Korea. Plants and sediment samples were collected during June 2000 and December 2000 on twenty-eight locations, including two Cheju Island stations, which were used to compare morphological characteristics with habitat types. Z. marina populations existed from the intertidal to subtidal zone, mainly in the bays along the coast and the island, the barrier reef, and the estuary where the water depth was 0.5${\sim}$8.0m. Salinity range in Z. marina beds ranged 18.2 to 34.5%$_o$. Sediments of Z. marina beds contained 49.7${\sim}$99.1% of sand and were classified into sand, muddy sand, and sandy mud. Mean grain size varied from 1.5 to 4.4 phi. Height of vegetation shoots varied from 54.7 to 171.4 cm, depending on water depth, location, substrata and habitat types. quantitative morphological features that enabled recognition of the two phonetic groups were short-narrow leaf type and long-broad leaf type. Statistical analysis indicated that biomass of individual plants and their quantitative morphological characteristics were significantly correlated.

Field observations were used to study the characteristics and influence of groundwater level fluctuations on vegetation development on the natural beach of a sandy barrier island, in the Nakdong River estuary. The spatial/temporal fluctuations of the groundwater level and the interactions with the external forces (weather, ocean wave and tide) were analyzed. The results indicated that when it rains the groundwater level rises. During summer, when precipitation intensity is greater than 20 mm/hour, it rose rapidly over 20 cm. Subsequently, it fell gradually during periods of no precipitation. Seasonal characteristics indicated that the groundwater level was high during the summer rainy season and tended to fall in the winter dry season. The time-averaged groundwater level, observed from the four observations over 3 years (2012-2014), was about 1.47 m, higher than mean sea level (M.S.L.). It was shown that the average annual groundwater level rises toward the land rather than showing intertidal patterns observation. Differences in the presence or absence of a coastal sand dunes affected the progress of vegetation. In other words, in environments of saltwater intrusion where the groundwater level varies, dependent on the distance from the shoreline and bottom slope, sand dunes can be provided to affect soil conditions and groundwater, so that vegetation can be grown reliably.

This study selected five observational stations in the normal direction of Jinu-do(island) shoreline and observed water temperature, electrical conductivity and pressure from March, 2012 to January, 2013(about 11 months) and attempted to see the variation characteristics of ground watertable. This study wants to know : 1) External environment force factors(tide, climate, wave etc.) affecting ground watertable variation through time series and correlation analysis. 2) Spatial variations of ground watertable and electrical conductivity change by storm event. First, we found that the station at the intertidal zone was strongly affected by wave and tide level and the stations at sand dune and vegetation zone was affected by precipitation and tide level through time series data and correlation analysis. Second, during the storm event, we found that ground watertable and electrical conductivity are stabilized at the start line of sand dune and vegetation zone and transition zone between freshwater layer and seawater layer exists in the experiment area and is about 50~70 m from coastline of the south side of Jinu-do(island).
This study was conducted to find the faunal composition and distribution patterns of macrobenthos where the sand tidal flat around barrier island at Nakdong River estuary in May, 2016 and 2017. The number of species ranged from 31 to 39, and density was from 789 to 1,644 ind.m-2 during the study period in the three tidal flats. The number of species and density were the highest in the tidal flat of Shinja-do and Jinwoo-do, respectively. The dominant species were Gammaridae unid. in amphipods of crustacea, Scoletoma heteropoda, Scoloplos armiger, Heteromastus filiformis, Prionospio japonica in polychaeta and Batillaria cumingii, Laternula marilina in mollusks from the three tidal flats. The proportion of carnivores such as crustacea and mollusks was higher in the upper part of the tidal flat, and polychaetes of deposit feeders, dominated in the middle and lower tidal flat. Overall, the intertidal macrobenthic communities in the study area showed a high proportion of carnivores. However, the sites where the mud content is high such as muddy sand sites, they showed a higher proportion of surface deposit feeders belonging to tube-builders which contribute to sediment stability. From this study, it seemed that the macrobenthic fauna of the sandy tidal flat at the Nakdong River estuary showed a similar fauna composition and zonal distribution patterns from those in other sandy tidal flats in Korea.

Geotextiles consist of three major types of geosynthetic material (woven, non-woven and composite) and the functions of geotextiles are separation, reinforcement, filtration, drainage and as a moisture barrier. Although the many research scholar and engineer developed and established the design criteria and construction methodology, sustainable research still needed for optimum design methodology to the complicate field conditions. In this study, in-situ rainfall test performed to develop suitable filter system for sea dyke upper slope filter layer. In-situ rainfall test conducted for seven different filter system and measured the infiltration flux and pore pressure at various filter layer. Based on the test results, the double layered geotextile filter and sand transition system is most suitable for sea dyke upper filter layer because which system is effective for drainage of infiltration flow and minimize the deformation of sea dyke cover stone.

Geotextiles form one of the two largest groups of geosynthetics and it is consisted two major types of synthetic material (Woven, Non-woven). The functions of geotextiles are separation, reinforcement, filtration, drainage and as a moisture barrier. Within these functions, however, there are a large number of applications or use areas. Although the many research scholar and engineer developed and established the design criteria and construction methodology of geosynthetics filter layer, because the lack of suitable design terminology and uncertainty of long term durability, sustainable research still needed for optimum design methodology to the complicate field conditions. Especially, more intensive research needed about under the cyclic flow condition and fine silty sand base material. In this paper, the filter model test performed under cyclic flow with various boundary conditions (period and frequency of cyclic flow, types of geosynthetic filter material, surcharge etc.).
Tidal asymmetry in the Keum River Estuary has been investigated from the observed tides. Despite strong frictional attenuation within the estuary, the $M_4$ tides reach significant amplitude, resulting in strong tidal distortion. The observed asymmetry over the area shows that generally more intense flood flows transport more sediment that do less intense ebb flows of longer duration. This causes filling of the estaury as evidenced by sand flats spreaded over the inner area. The spatial distribution of peak bottom stress associated with the dominant $M_2$ and $M_4$ tides calculated via two-dimensional numerical tidal model suggest that present tidal sedimentation regimemay be altered, sepecially in the approach channel to outer Kunsan Port and downstream part of the dike, due to the construction of barrier.
The simulation of water balance was conducted for suggested four alternative multi-layer cover design of near-surface radioactive waste disposal facility under domestic climate condition. The analysis was also conducted for the most favorable one out of four alternative cover design under conservative scenarios. Until 100 years after closure of disposal vault, the infiltration flux for the most favorable cover design was negligible even under doubling of the ambient precipitation condition. When the degradation of asphalt and geomembrane after 100 years of closure was considered, the infiltration flux significantly increased almost to the design criteria of cover system in I' Aube disposal facility. And it was found that the hydraulic conductivity of bentonite/sand as a bottom barrier should be no greater than 1$\times$10$^{-7}$ cm/sec recommended by U.S. EPA.
