Development of OCB mode with impulsive driving scheme for improving moving picture quality

  • In general, contrary to the CRTs with impulsive emission, liquid crystal displays have motion artifacts such as blurring. ghost image, decrease of dynamic CR(contrast ratio), and stroboscopic motion due to hold type driving method. In this paper, to improve motion picture quality of LCDs. impulsive driving method of black data insertion was applied to the OCB mode which is well known for its fast LC response time and wide viewing angle properties. Subject evaluation was carried out with CRT, TN, SIPS(Super IPS). and impulsive driving OCB. Moving picture image quality near CRT was obtained in impulsive OCB driving mode

  • We have developed technology to fabricate large-size active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays with good color purity. Using these innovations, we have developed a 40inch diagonal WXGA AMOLED full color display. Because the TFT circuitry occupies a large portion of the pixel structure, an efficient white emission OLED is essential to integrate the device onto the active matrix backplane. The development of these technologies enables OLED displays to fulfill the requirements for larger size applications such as HDTVs

  • We developed 4.8 inch WQVGA e-paper on plastic substrate using organic field effect transistors (OFETs). Polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) film was used as a flexible substrate and arrays of OFETs with bottom-gate, bottom-contact structure were fabricated on it. Lowtemperature curable organic gate insulating materials were employed and polymer semiconductor solutions were ink-jetted on arrays with high-resolution. At all steps, process temperature was limited below $130^{\circ}C$. Finally, we could drive flexible e-paper displays based on OFET arrays with the resolution of 100 dpi.

  • Last year, we introduced a TFT-LCD with RGBW color system. The primary advantage of the RGBW system is that its optical efficiency is at least 50% higher than the RGB system. However, it is not a simple task to incorporate the new color system into the infrastructure of the RGB system: the driving circuitry, fabrication of color filter, and color conversion. In this report, the practical hurdles are discussed and the solutions are presented.

  • This paper presents a high-speed pulse-based flip-flop with pseudo MUX-type scan compatible with the conventional master-slave flip-flop with MUX-type scan. The proposed flip-flop was implemented as the standard cell library using Samsung 130nm HS technology. The data-to-output delay and power-delay-product of the proposed flip-flop are reduced by up to 59% and 49%, respectively. By using this flop-flop, ARM11 softcore has achieved the maximum 1GHz operating speed.

  • For a large sized, ultra definition (UD) and high refresh rate for motion blur free AMLCD TVs, amorphous IGZO thin film transistor (TFT) are applied and investigated in terms of threshold voltage ($V_{th}$) shift influenced by active layer thickness uniformity, source drain etching technology, heat treatment and passivation condition. Optimizing above parameters, we fabricated the world's largest 15 inch XGA AMLCD successfully.

  • The world largest 21.3" LTPS LCD has been successfully developed using SLS crystallization technology. Integration of gate circuit, transmission gate and level shifter was successfully performed in a large area display. Uniform and high performance of high quality grains of SLS technology make it possible to realize a uniform large size LTPS TFT-LCD with half the number of data driver IC's that is typically used in a-Si LCD. High aperture ratio of 65 % was achieved using an organic inter insulating method which lead to a high brightness of 500 cd/$cm^2$.

  • A very high current efficiency of 28 cd/A for three-mode microcavity tandem WOLED was successfully demonstrated. The 101 % of NTSCu'v' ratio of this white OLED with LCD color filter was achieved. In addition to wide color gamut, the highest delta (u'v') of respective RGB colors among the viewing angles 0 and 60 degree is just 0.042 and that of white color is less than 0.02.
