The east coast of the Korean Peninsula is susceptible to fires because of the low rainfall in winter and spring, and large forest fires have occurred in this area. Lack of fresh water to combat fires has hampered efforts to prevent widespread forest fires in this region. Seawater has not been used as a suppressant because of possible detrimental effects of salt. We investigated the mobility of saline water in the forest soil and their effect on the microbial activity. Using a fire-fighting helicopter, seawater was sprayed over three plots (50 × 100 m) located on the eastern slope of the Baekdu mountain range in South Korea in April, 2011. We sampled the soil in April 4, May 20, and August 5 to determine the amount of salt that remained in the soil. The electrical conductivity value of the soil decreased to <400 μS/cm over a 1-month period. Approximately, four months after the application of seawater, the electrical conductivity value and Na+ content in all treatment plots did not significantly differ to those of the control plot, and total microbial activity also recovered to that of the control. Our results indicate that the amount of rainfall, soil physical-chemical properties, and topological factors may be a critical factor determining the mobility of saline water in forest soil.
This study is conducted with a view to make correct sexual differentiation by the utilization of discriminant functions. For that purpose were randomly sampled out 148 young adults testes, comprising 67 males and 81 females, ranging from 15 through 18 years fo age. Based on the values made available from the measurement of 6 items corresponding to the maxillary cast models, a statistical analysis was made to abstract feasible discriminant functions. The results findings are as follows: 1. The mean value by sex indicates, in all items, higher one in male group than in female group. 2. Through the measurement were defined as singnificant items in sexual differentiation the bucco-lingual dimensions of canine, 1st-molar, 2nd molar, and 1st bimolat width. 3. Derived from the value from measurement items were discriminant functions with the intention of applying them to sexual differentiation, as follows: 1) Y=-25.4112+0.7513BL3+0.3298BL4-0.2854BL5+0.7350BL6-0.3482BL7+0.2893AW (as tested by Method I) 2)Y=-25.0628+0.7737BL3+0.7468BL6-0.3885BL5+0.2951AW(as tested by Method II) BL3 : Bucco-lingual dimension of upper canine BL4 : Bucco-lingual dimension of upper first prmolar BL5 : Bucco-lingual dimension of upper second premolar BL5 : Bucco-lingual dimension of upper first molar BL6 : Bucco-lingual dimension of upper second molar AW : Upper first bimolar width 4. Sexual defferentiation in terms of descriminant functions represented a probility of 74.6%.
To estimate dry deposition flux of 12 elements in aerosols, aerosol particles were sampled by a low-pressure impactor(LPI) and a dust jar. The concentrations of 12 elements in aerosol particle and dry deposition were analyzed by a PIXE analysis using as a 2.0 MeV-proton beam. The mean dry deposition velocities of 12 elements were estimated by ranges of 0.74∼2.62 cm/sec. The results showed that the highest value was 3.26 cm/sec for Ca and the lowest value 0.74 cm/sec for Fe. The dry deposition flux for elements was calculated as a function of particle size by 1-step method and 12-step method. In this work, dry deposition velocities were computed with the two existing models; the coarse-particle fraction(4∼30 mm diameter) using the dry deposition velocity model of the Noll and Fang(1998) and the fine-particle fraction (0.05∼4mm diameter) using the Shemel and Hodgson(1980) model. The ratios of the mean calculated/measured fluxes were 3.59 for 1-step method and 0.60 for 12-step method respectively.
Purpose: This study examines construction core plans for the users of vertical-typed general hospitals to effectivly use the flow line. Methods: The study sampled representative 9 hospitals, calculated the depth value through Convex Map of Space Syntax and Justified Graph according to the determination of form of construction cire, and analyzed its functional connectivity. Results: The analysis of the connectivity between operation core part and emergency part of core space with high importance in the hospitals showed that the types of hospital and hospital have the lowest depth value in the spatial phase diagram, where central treatment part and outpatient part are arranged well vertically. Elevators for patients at these hospitals are close to operation and emergency parts actually separated from the elevators for passengers. For shortening of flow line of patients and private movement environment, however, it is desirable to arrange the elevators for patients to be adjacent to the operation parts and to arrange the emergent patient entrances more effectively to separate them from the flow line of visitors and guardians. Implications: Consideration should be taken into account for the effective flow line design. This study hopefully may serve as a stepping stone for the standard design of horizontal/vertical flow line.
For the cassion type of breakwater under the condition of large wave loads, stability about lateral movement of breakwater was investigated by performing centrifuge model experiments. Prototype of breakwater was modelled by scaling down to centrifuge model and the soft ground reinforced with grouting was also reconstructed in the centrifuge model experiments. Sandy ground beneath breakwater was prepared with a soil sampled in field so that identical value of internal friction angle could be obtained. Centrifuge model experiments were carried out to reconstruct the construction sequence in field. Lateral static wave load was applied to the model caisson after the final stage of construction sequence was rebuilt and the measured lateral movement of caisson was compared with allowable value by the code to assess the stability about lateral movement of the breakwater.
Recently, the traffic noise around residences and schools has become a serious social problem with the increase of the amount of transportation. This study was performed to investigate the sound proof efficiency of windows for traffic noise. The results were as follows 1) The traffic noise in 19 sites among 22 sampling sites was higher value than 65 dB(A) being roadside environment standard level in the daytime when all windows were opened, while the noise in 22 sampling sites was transmitted below standard level when all windows were closed. 2) The transmission loss of sound level at single window and double windows were 10~25 dB(A) and 11~29 dB(A) respectively. 3) The transmission loss of sound level at sampled school with sound proof pannel was 7~8 dB (A), which was lower 2~7 dB(A) than the theoretical value of the influence assessment . 4) The construction cost of double windows was lower 28% even if include the cost of setting up air conditioner for the summer season and the power consuming cost for its operation than that of sound proof pannel for traffic noise. 5) The effect of transmission loss of windows was more influenced by airtight than materials of windows.
Spent compost wheat straw is an available by-product from edible mushroom production, which constitutes a potential pollutant and is cost effective for disposal. This study was conducted to determine the nutritive value as ruminant feed of spent wheat straw compost from Agaricus bisporus mushroom production. The compost was provided from a mushroom farm, the casing soil was removed from the whole compost, and then it was sun dried and sampled for chemical analysis. An experiment was conducted, in which four wheat straw-based diets comprising control (I), 10% spent straw (II), 20% spent straw (III) and 30% spent straw (IV) were tested in a cross-over design using 8 sheep. Dry matter intake (DMI) was 74.0, 73.8, 70.2 and 57.1 and organic matter intake (OMI) was 62.7, 63.4, 58.0 and 44.4 g per kg $BW^{0.75}$ for diets I, II, III and IV, respectively, which, were significantly (p<0.05) lower for diet IV. Digestible OMI was respectively 33.1, 32.6, 30.6 and, 20.2 g per kg $BW^{0.75}$ on the four diets which were significantly (p<0.05) different between the treatments. Inclusion of spent compost straw up to 20% of the diet did not affect the digestibility of DM, OM, CF, ADF and NDF, but the diet containing 30% compost straw had statistically (p<0.05) lower digestibilities. Nitrogen balance was also significantly (p<0.05) different between the treatments.
The effects of various natural antioxidant sources on oxidation of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) and fish diet during storage was determined. Juvenile fish were distributed among 18 flow-through tanks (40 fish per tank). Six experimental diets were prepared in triplicate: control (CT), antitox (AT), green tea extract (GE), fig extract (FE), Haeroc product (HP) and by-product of green tea (BG). The experimental diets were stored at two temperatures: room temperature ($26.8^{\circ}C$) for 14 days and frozen ($-30^{\circ}C$) for 16 weeks. Thirty fish were sampled from each tank at the end of the 8-week feeding trial. Whole bodies of fish were homogenized and stored in a home freezer ($-9.6^{\circ}C$) for 24 weeks. Acid values (AVs) and peroxide values (POVs) of the diets and frozen fish during storage were monitored. AVs of the experimental diets tended to increase with the storage period except for that of the HP diet at room temperature. POVs from FE, CT, and BG diets peaked at day 7 and then decreased through the remainder of the experiment. AVs of the experimental diets and fish increased with time at $-30^{\circ}C$ and $-9.6^{\circ}C$. Results of this study show that by-products of green tea and Haeroc product seem to have potential as antioxidants in fish feed to inhibit oxidation of both the feed and fish during storage.
The undisturbed specimens used in this research were sampled in the field by the sequential sampling method. In addition, four testing methods were applied to identify for the characteristics and classification of weathered strata. N-value by standard penetration test was obtained from in the field and then analyzed using normalization method. Other methods such as X-ray grain size distribution, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy(XRF), and fall cone test were carried out in the lab. These analyzed results indicate that distribution of particle, composition of minerals are changed in accordance with the degree of weathering, unusual strata and depth. Consequently, the weathered strata can be extensively separated into two parts according to the test results and each part was shown different in the strata characteristics. It can be prospected that mechanical characteristics should be different, even though mechanical tests were not applied. Furthermore, these results not only make up for the error by one testing method but also contribute more effectively and economically to the design and the construction.
