Estuarine wetland, where freshwater meets saltwater, is a transitional ecosystem that is valuable ecologically for a variety of reasons, such as feeding and breeding sites for birds, fish, and wildlife. However, research on the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of estuarine wetlands in Korea is rare. As a fundamental basis for wetland conservation, this study quantified the wetlands in three major estuaries, and evaluated the temporal dynamics of the wetlands since the 1910s. In particular, this study classified the wetland types into mud flat, sand, and emergent-plant types, and estimated the change of each wetland type, using topographic maps produced in the 1910s, 1970s, and 2000s. The wetlands in both the Han and Youngsan River estuaries have declined since the 1910s, but the rate of wetland decline was relatively low before the 1970s, compared to that since the 1970s. The impact of human activities, such as the Youngsan Watershed Comprehensive Development Project and the construction of estuary barrages, has disrupted the estuary cycles and destroyed huge amounts of wetland in the Youngsan estuary. By contrast, estuarine wetlands have been preserved in the small Gahwa estuary, and provide a variety of habitats for plants and wildlife. A special management strategy for wetlands should be established as soon as possible.
Fresh water injection test in a fractured bedrock aquifer was applied as an efficient approach to lower saline concentrations in the saltwater-freshwater transition zone formed by seawater intrusion in a coastal area. The methodology and effectiveness of fresh water injection for hydraulically controlling seawater intrusion is overwhelmingly site dependent, and there is an urgent need to characterize the permeable fractures or unconsolidated porous formations which can allow for seawater flow and transport. Considering aquifer characteristics, injection and monitoring boreholes were optimally designed and completed to inject fresh water through sand layer and fractured bedrock, respectively. We devised and used the injection system using double packer for easy field operation and maintenance. Overall fracture distribution was systematically identified from borehole image logs, and the section of fresh water injection was decided from injection test and monitoring. With fresh water injection, the fluid electrical conductivity of the monitoring well started to be lowered by the inflow of fresh water at the specific depth. And this inflow leaded to the replacement of the fluid in the upper parts of the borehole with fresh water. Furthermore, the injection effect lasted more than several months, which means that fresh water injection may contribute to the mitigation of seawater intrusion in a coastal area.
The Youngsan River estuary was physically changed by the construction of a sea embankment at near the mouth of estuary. Weirs were also constructed recently in the freshwater zone and it was reported that algal blooms occur more frequently. The freshwater introduced into saltwater zone from sluice gates of the embankment affects water quality but it has not been addressed that how the freshwater inputs influence the health of marine ecosystem. In this study, we used the data of water properties and phytoplankton communities collected at three stations for 4 days including before the freshwater discharge, during the discharge and after 1 and 2 days of discharge events. WQI(water quality index), TRIX (trophic status index) and P-IBI(phytoplankton index of biotic integrity) were used to evaluate the ecosystem health and long-term data were also utilized to determine the criteria for P-IBI. The results showed that grades of the ecosystem health assessed by the indices were low at the station near the gates and increased as downstream. However, the temporal pattern of grades was different depending on methods. Grades of WQI and TRIX decreased during the discharge and restored after the discharge whereas the grades of P-IBI decreased slightly even after the discharge. This suggests that P-IBI is more applicable to estuarine systems where experience extreme change of water properties than WQI and TRIX since P-IBI includes phytoplankton that can respond quickly to the change.
To select some salt tolerant pasture species for grassland establishment on the west coastal saline land in Korea, this work was carried out from March to October in 1976 with 5 pasture seeds mainly were introduced from Australia. On the soil salt content was 0.4%, all seeds germination were failure, but all species were survived on the 0.2% salt content land. The yield of forage were much better from Kikuyu grass and Pearl millet but poor from other species. The Meadow grass could be used for protect soil erosion by lot of tillers. By the result from this experiment, only Kikuyu grass and Pearl millet were possible to use for forage crops. But to continue this work, it is suggested to introduced more effective species such like Saltwater couch, Saltshore ryegrass, Puccinella, Salt bush, Blue buch, Samphire and so on.

The Saemangeum Reservoir was constructed in 2006 as a part of Saemangeum reclamation project in which desalination has been also carried out. The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for predicting changes in fish distribution in the Saemangeum area with respect to the desalination processand to identify current status of fish distribution along with salinity levels. Fish sampling and measurement of salinity were conducted 4 times from February to October in 2012 at 10 sites within the Saemangeum Reservoir. A total of 71 species classified into 34 families were confirmed, and dominant and subdominant species were Thryssa kammalensis (16.1%) and Konosirus punctatus (12.8%), respectively. Saltwater fishes were still dominant at the Saemangeum Reservoir. Study sites were classified into four groups (A=St. 1, 6; B=St. 2, 3, 7, 8; C=St. 4, 9, 10; D=St. 5) by Bray-Curtis cluster analysis. Species composition of each group was closely related with salinity level: group A corresponding to 0.2 psu, B to 14.2 psu, C to 19.5 psu, and D to 23.5 psu.

Groundwater level changes in coastal aquifers occur due to oceanic tides, where the properties of oceanic tides can be applied to estimate hyadraulic parameters. Hydraulic parameters of coastal aquifers located in eastern part of Jeju island were estimated using the tidal response technique. Groundwater level data from a saltwater intrusion monitoring well system was used which showed tidal effects from 3 to 5 km. The hydraulic gradient was assessed by utilizing the filtering method from 71 consecutive hourly water-level observations. Calculated hydraulic diffusivity ranged from 2.94${\times}10^7m^2d^{-1}$ to 4.36${\times}10^7m^2d^{-1}$ . The hydraulic gradient of the coastal aquifer area was found to be ~$10^{-4}$, whereas the gradient of the area between wells Handong-1 and 2 was found to be ~$10^{-6}$, which is very low comparatively. Analysis of groundwater monitoring data showed that groundwater levels are periodically higher near coastal areas compared to that of inner land areas due to oceanic tide influences. When assessing groundwater flow direction in coastal aquifers it is important to consider tidal fluctuation.
The purpose of this study was to obtain a large amount of saline groundwater around coastal aquaculture farms. Thus, we have proposed a method for evaluating the potential amount of saline groundwater resources through the combined analysis of geophysical methods. Refraction seismic survey and electrical resistivity survey were conducted in the vicinity of fish farm at Hadong, Gyeongnam Province. As the result, the velocity of layer in the range of 900 ~ 2,400 m/s was found to be saltwater aquifer with high water content. Geological drilling investigation and analysis of soil samples also showed that the soil at study area was the same as the texture of sandy loam layer in agricultural radial collector wells installed by KRC (Korea Rural Community Corporation). Futhermore, the study area turned out to be quite possible to develop saline groundwater from the coastal shallow aquifer. Therefore, parallel analysis of refraction seismic surveys and electrical resistivity surveys at coastal area are expected to be very useful for the detection of the aquifer composed of sand and gravel layers with high porosity in sandy sedimentary layers along the coastal area.

The production of plum jangachi requires the cleaning of plums, immersion in saltwater, separation of seed and pulp, removal of impurities, and addition of sugar. In most farms, the separation of plum seed and pulp is carried out manually, requiring considerable labor, which is why plum jangachi is expensive. To solve this problem, this study designed and manufactured automatic, semi-automatic plum seed and pulp separators. During the design process, the characteristics were compared, and the machine power was determined through on-site test after manufacture. As a result, automatic machines used plums 180° arrayed and six reverse-edged blades, semi-automated plums 180° arrayed, and six blades, each with a 68% and 57% pulp recovery rate and a machine power of 80 kg/h and 62 kg/h respectively. Overall, the mechanization of plum processed food will reduce labor and increase the market value of plums compared to the previous method.

This study has been executed to understand the additional and removal processes of nutrients in the Saemangeum Salt-water Lake, and discussed with other monthly-collected environmental parameters such as water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids, and Chl-a from 2008 to 2010. $NO_3$-N, TP, $PO_4$-P, and DISi showed the removal processes along with the salinity gradients at the surface water of the lake, whereas $NO_2$-N, $NH_4$-N, and Chl-a showed addition trend. In the bottom water all water quality parameters except $NO_3$-N appeared addition processes indicating evidence of continuous nutrients suppliance into the bottom layer. The mixing modelling approach revealed that the biogeochemical processes in the lake consume $NO_3$-N and consequently added $NH_4$-N and $PO_4$-P to the bottom water during the summer seasons. The $NH_4$-N and $PO_4$-P appeared strong increase at the bottom water of the river-side of the lake and strong concentration gradient difference of dissolved oxygen also appeared in the same time. DISi exhibited continuous seasonal supply from spring to summer. Internal addition of $NH_4$-N and $PO_4$-P in the river-side of the lake were much higher than the dike-side, while the increase of DISi showed similar level both the dike and river sides. The temporal distribution of benthic flux for DISi indicates that addition of nutrients in the bottom water was strongly affected by other sources, for example, submarine ground-water discharge (SGD) through bottom sediment.

To investigate the possible use of plants for landscaping in reclaimed soil, a planting pilot system experiment was performed over the course of four years in reclaimed dredging area with four species: Alnus firma, Alnus hirsuta, Pinus thunbergii, and Pyrachantha angustifolia for 4 years. The physicochemical characteristics of the tested soil showed that it was sandy through coming from a reclaimed dredging area. The average pH of the tested soil was 7.16(slight alkali), and electric conductivity(EC) was relatively low, $294{\mu}S/cm$, even though it came from a saltwater area. To test the effect of planting density vs. phytomass by plant specie from a planting basin, the experiment was designed using four plant species with high and low planting densities over 4 years. The planting conditions of the growth of landscape tree species exhibited growth height as follows: A. hirsuta, A. firma, P. thunbergii, and P. angustifolia, whill the DBH followed the order of A. hirsuta, A. firma, and P. thunbergii. The total phytomass of each plant was higher at low density planting areas than high density planting area in terms of total phytomass production and growth distribution in the reclaimed dredging area. Total phytomass per unit area increased as follows: A. hirsuta, A. firma, P. thunbergii, and P. angustifolia. The total phytomass per each tested plant was 2 times higher in low density planting areas than high density planting areas. Total phytomass per unit area, however, was similar or slighty higher in high density planting areas compared to low density areas. Among the tested plants, A. hirsuta showed the highest phytomass, implying that A. hirsuta adapted very well to the reclaimed area and has the capability of a fast growth, nitrogen fixation tree, and utilizing insoluble nutrients through inoculated root nodule bacteria. The yield of phytomass per individual in low density Alnus species was greater than that of the high density. However, those per unit areas had no difference in the density-dependent planting. The ratio of belowground to aboveground was $0.21{\sim}0.26$. Thus, it could be concluded that the Alnus species are potential candidates for ornamental tree species in reclaimed dredging areas. This study offers baseline data for the use of ornamental tree species in reclaimed dredging areas. Additional research is required for different ornamental species in order to increase phytomass of a planting conditions based on reclaimed dredging areas.
