Background and objective: Calcium chloride (CaCl2) and sodium chloride (NaCl) are commonly used as a deicing agent in South Korea and penetrate the soil on the roadside, causing damage to plants. This study was conducted to investigate the salinity reduction effect of Pennisetum alopecuroides and the chemical characteristics of soil leachate. Methods: The plants were treated with five different concentrations of CaCl2 (0, 1, 2, 5, and 10g·L-1) and were grouped into the Cont., C1, C2, C5, and C10 groups. CaCl2 of 200 m·L-1 was sprayed to each plant once every two weeks. The growth of P. alopecuroides (plant height, leaf length, leaf width and the number of leaves) was measured. The level of EC and pH, and exchangeable cations (K+, Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+) in the leachate of soil was monitored. Results: The pH of soil leachate decreased as the CaCl2 concentration increased, and the EC increased significantly. The content of K+ did not change significantly until the concentration of CaCl2 reached 5 g·L-1, but the content of Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+ significantly increased. The plant height, leaf length, and leaf width of P. alopecuroides showed the highest value in CaCl2 1 g·L-1 followed by CaCl2 2 g·L-1 and the control group. Root fresh weight was the highest in CaCl2 2 g·L-1. On the other hand, there was no change in the shoot fresh weight, dry weight and root dry weight, and P. alopecuroides growth inhibition at the concentration of 5 g·L-1 or higher in the plant height and leaf length. Conclusion: P. alopecuroides is relatively highly salt-tolerant and can improve the salt damaged soil by lowering the content of the salt-based exchangeable K+ ions.
Lactobacilli, the dominant species of microorganisms in the vaginal flora of healthy women, play important roles to prevent bacterial vaginosis and other sexually transmitted diseases. In this study, we carried out studies on stress adaptation prior to various stress treatment. We found that heat or salt adapted KLB46 showed higher cell viability than non adapted upon heat stress at $60^{\circ}C$ for 20 min. When chloramphenicol was added during the adaptation process, heat tolerance was abolished. This result suggested that de novo protein synthesis was essential during adaptation.
We studied the resistance of Cenococcum geophilum and Suillus granulatus isolates to NaCl during growth under axenic culture conditions. C. geophilum isolates displayed variations in NaCl resistance; mycelial growth of most isolates was inhibited above 200mM. All isolates of S. granulatus were tolerant to high NaCl content.
The effects of nacl concentration, temperatura, light and growth regulator(GA3, kinetin) on the tuber germination of s. maritimus were investigated. The germination percentage increased with decreasing nacl, showing salt tolerance through time, and with increasing temperature untile 20~30oC light / dark (12/12 hr) of optimal temperature. The multiplication of nacl and temperature on germination percentage and velocity, increased significantly in higher temperature than lower temperature in saline. The germination percentage showed high value in dark condition than in light condition which is the charracteristics of underground organ. and ga3 act as germination stimulator to overcome the inhibitory effect of nacl. The effect of ga3 showed significant differances on tubers of s. maritimus of germination but that of kinetin had a litter sffects on germination. Factors of nacl and temperature interacted significantly and the effects of nacl on germination percentage and velocity depended on temperature condition.
The Nongkwang variety was sown directly in the field by the three methods of dibbling, drill seeding and broad-casting in non-, low- and high-salty areas, and compared with the growth of transplanted rice in each areas. The yield of rough rice was increased remarkably by direct sowing when compared with that produced by transplanting inboth salty areas, but in non-salty area, the former was decreased significantly. There was no significant difference in the yields of rough rice resulting from three seedling methods of direct sowing in each area. The direct sowing method was predominated in number of panicle, weight of panicle, ratio of matured grains, milling recovery percentage, and straw weight in both salty areas, and dicreased in panicle weight and ratio of matured grain in nonsalty area.
Plants have evolved to adapt to abiotic stresses, such as salt, cold, and drought stress. In this study, we conducted an in-depth analysis of drought resistance mechanisms by constructing a gene co-expression network in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis L.). This drought stress co-expression network has 1,560 nodes, 4,731 edges, and 79 connected components. Based on genes that showed significant co-expression in the network, drought tolerance was associated with the induction of reactive oxygen species removal by raffinose family oligosaccharides and inositol metabolism. This network could be a useful tool for predicting the functions of genes involved in drought stress resistance in Chinese cabbage.
