  • A single specimen (91.5 cm standard length) of the salmonid species, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum, 1792) was collected on April 19, 2022 in Sokcho-si, Gangwon-do, Korea. O. tshawytscha has the following morphological characteristics: base of lower jaw teeth is black, black spots are scattered on the dorsal section of body, and the edge of caudal fin is black. Although the species is morphologically similar to Oncorhynchus kisutch, O. tshawytscha differs from it in having black spots on the caudal fin. Molecular analysis results based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences showed that our specimen perfectly matched with the COI sequences of O. tshawytscha registered at the NCBI. Therefore, we suggest the new Korean name 'Wang-yeon-eo' for O. tshawytscha.

  • An investigation of the karyotypes of two species of the genus Brachymystax (B. lenok and B. tumensis) has been done for the Russia Primorye rivers running to the East Sea basin, and others belonging to Amur basin. Based on the analysis of two species chromosome characteristics, combined with original and literary data, four cytotypes have been described. One of these cytotypes (Cytotype I: 2n=90, NF=110-118) was the most common. This common cytotype belongs to B. tumensis from the rivers of the East Sea basin and B. lenok from the rivers of the Amur basin, i.e. extends to the zones of allopatry. In the rivers of the Amur river basin, in the zone of the sympatric habitat of two species, each taxon has karyotypes with different chromosome numbers, B. tumensis (2n=92) and B. lenok (2n=90). Because of the ability to determine a number of the chromosome arms for these two species, additional cytotype have been identified for B. tumensis: Cytotype II with 2n=92, NF=110-124 in the rivers basins of the Yellow sea and Amur river and for B. lenok three cytotypes: Cytotype I: 2n=90, NF=110 in the Amur river basin; Cytotype III with 2n=90, NF=106-126 in the Amur river basin and Cytotypes IV with 2n=92, NF=102 in the Baikal lake.

  • Distribution status, habitat characteristics, and extinction threat evaluation of the endangered species, Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis were investigated in 2015 and 2019. Historical distribution reports of B. l. tsinlingensis were divided into before 1990, 1997~2006, 2000~2011, and 2010~2019. Among the 150 sampling sites investigated during the study period, number of individuals of B. l. tsinlingensis were collected 542 individuals from 67 sites. The streams inhabited of B. l. tsinlingensis were Naerincheon (11 stations), Odaecheon (11 stations), Bukcheon (10 stations), Bangtaecheon (8 stations), Songjeongricheon (4 stations), Suipcheon (3 stations), Inbukcheon (3 stations), Hyeondongcheon (3 stations) etc. The main habitat of B. l. tsinlingensis was upstream of the river with a high altitude of more than 400 m, 4~20 m water flow width, 1~2 m water depth, and high ratio (70~80%) boulder bottoms. The main reasons for the decline in population size were assumed as river works, construction of reservoirs and bridges, discharge of contaminated water into the river, the inflow of summer vacationers, and weir. Compared to our results there exists evidence that states a 20.7% reduction in occupancy within 10 years, in a small appearance range (7,732 km2) and occupancy area (268 km2), number of disconnected locations (15 locations), and a decline in habitat quality. Therefore, B. l. tsinlingensis is now considered as Near Threatened (NT) based on the results (Near meets VU A2acd, B1b(i,ii,iii)+B2b(i,ii,iii)) of IUCN Red List categories and criteria.

  • The morphological characteristics of chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta, masou salmon. Oncorhynchus masou and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss in Korea were studied from 1989 to 1990. It was found that 13 factors of the female and 11 factors of the male in body form, number of pyloric ceaca and gill rakers has significant specific differences. There were some differences among species in the ratios of body depth, caudal peduncle depth, dorsal fin length and anal fin length to standard length (PBL), and snout length, eye diameter, upper jaw length, and cheek to head length. In the ratio of head length to fork length of the male, chum salmon showed the highest(24.7%) value and rainbow trout the lowest(21.6%). No difference was found in the female. It was proved that number of vertebrae, gill rakers, pyloric ceaca and lateral line scales were useful taxonomical characteristics of the salmon species. In particular, the ratio of eye diameter (ED) to head length (HL) appeared to be a new taxonomic criterion for the salmons in Korean waters.

  • Sexual dimorphism of the matured chum salmon, Onchorhynchus keta, have been studied based on biometrical measurements and osteological characters. Male chum salmon has an elongated and hooked upper jaw and canine-like teeth on the upper and lower jaw. The ratios of snout length (SnL) and upper jaw length (UJ) to head length of male were larger than those of the female, whereas eye diameter (ED) and postorbital part of head (CK) of the male were smaller than those of the female's. The ratios of body depth, caudal peduncle depth, anal fin length and adipose fin length to the standard length (PBL) of the male were also larger than those of the female. On sexual dimolrphism was detected in number of fin rays, gill rakers and pyloric ceaca, where as number of lateral line scales and caudal vertebrae of the female was larger than those of the male. Glossohyal and vomer bones has no sexual difference. The ratio of width to length of supraethmoid bone of the male was larger than that of the female. The ratio of frontal part to posterior part of parasphenoid bone of the male was smaller than that of the female.

  • Matured adults of chum salmon were collected from Namdae-chun River, Yangyand-gun, Kangwon-do, Korea in december of 1989 and 1990. Artificial insemination was made in the field. Hatching and neasing were cassied out in laboratories of the Yangyand Fisheries Institute and Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute : Ossification of bones of alevin, fry and smolt were investigated : 1. The newly hatched alevins, 1.80 to 2.56mm in total length, were ossified partly on parasphenoid, maxillary, dentary and opercle bones. 2. The alevin stage, the visceral bones connected with feeding and respiratory function were ossified earlier than cranium and vertebra. At swim up stage, the fry attained 3 to 4cm in total length, most of bones except cranium were ossified. 3. Teeth on the jaw bones, palatine, vomer, upper and lower pharyngeal bones were increased conspicuously when the body length were ranged from 3 to 4cm. 4. Caudal fin of hatched larvae had already seventeen occified rays and developed earlier than any other fins.

  • This study compared the meat quality of sea rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss frame muscle (S-FR-TY) and fillet (S-FI-TY) with the frame muscle of freshwater rainbow trout (F-FR). There was a difference of < 1% in the proximate composition of S-FR-TY vs. S-FI-TY, and of S-FR-TY vs. F-FR. The Hunter a value of F-FR-TY was lower compared with that of F-FR cultured in Jecheon (F-FR-JC), but higher than that of F-FR cultured in Pyeongtaek (F-FR-PT). However, no difference in the Hunter a value of S-FR-TY compared with any other F-FR was observed. The odor intensity of S-FR-TY was lower compared with that of F-FR, while the taste of S-FR-TY was milder than that of S-FI-TY, but stronger than that of F-FR. Although its total amino acid content was lower, the essential amino acid content of S-FR-TY was higher compared with S-FI-TY; the potassium content of S-FR-TY was also significantly greater. S-FR-TY contained high levels of nutritional and functional components, such as anserine, lysine, threonine, and eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid. These results suggest that S-FR-TY could be used as a resource of canned food or fish jerky for children.
