오리에서 발생한 바이러스성 간염과 살모넬라균증의 혼합감염 (Concurrent Occurrence of Duck Viral Hepatitis and Salmonellosis in Ducklings)

  • Ducklings collected from three farms, having history of rapid onset and spread of nerve signs including kick spasmodically with legs and opisthotonos, were pathologically, barteriologically, virologically examined. Grossly, multiple petechial to ecchymotic hemorrhages were detected in the swollen liver. Histopathologically, diffuse coagulative necrosis of hepatocytes was characteristic in acute cases. Chronic cases revealed marked bile duct hyperplasia rather than hepatocyte necrosis. Some of these cases exhibited multiple granulomas consisting of macrophages, heterophil, fibrin and necrotic cell debri. Filtered homogenate of livers sampled from ducklings caused embryo death with marked hemorrhage and swollen of liver after inoculation into chorioallantoic membrane. Three strains of Salmonella app.,S montevideo, S hadar, and S give, which were biochemically and serologically identified, weir isolated from ducklings of three farms, respectively. From these results, these ducklings were concurrently infected with duck hepatitis virus and Salmonella spp.

대전지역 양계 농가의 추백리 항체 조사 (Study on the seroprevalence of Salmonella Pullorum in boiler farms in Daejeon area)

  • In order to investigate the seroprevalence of Salmonella Pullorum in boilers reared in Daejeon area, 509 samples were collected from 10 boiler farms randomly selected from 38. The survey was carried out during 6 months from April to October in 2007. Out of 509 chickens, 35 (6.9%) were seropositive and average titer was $2^{4.8}$. The seroprevalence by district was 5.5% (5/90) in Dong-gu, 4.1 % (4/96) in Seo-gu, 7.9% (24/303) in Yuseong-gu, 10.0% (2/20) in Daedeok-gu.

Detection of virulence, specific genes and antibiotic resistance of isolated Salmonella spp. strains from rabbits infected with salmonellosis

  • Salmonella spp. are pathogens involved in most salmonellosis in rabbits. This study examined Salmonella disease in rabbits raised in Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam. Two hundred and 56 rectal swabs of rabbits were taken, and a carrier rate of 33.98% was found. In addition, all the isolated Salmonella spp. strains were 100% motile; positive for H2S, catalase, Voges Proskauer, coagulase, citrate, maltose, and dextrose; and negative for indole, methyl red, urease, oxidase, sucrose, and lactose. The Kirby-Bauer method showed that these Salmonella strains were susceptible to doxycycline (93.2%), tetracycline (84.1%), and levofloxacin (65.9%). On the other hand, they were highly resistant to streptomycin (95.5%), ampicillin (93.2%), colistin (40.9%), and gentamicin (34.1%). Furthermore, polymerase chain reaction used to screen for virulence and specific genes of Salmonella strains showed that all Salmonella strains isolated carried InvA, fimA, and Stn.

Risk Assessment for Salmonellosis in Chicken in South Korea: The Effect of Salmonella Concentration in Chicken at Retail

  • Salmonellosis caused by chicken consumption has been a critical issue in food safety worldwide, including in Korea. The probability of illness from consumption of chicken was simulated in study, based on the recipe of Dakgalbi, a commonly eaten chicken dish in Korea. Additionally, the processing stage at slaughterhouses to decrease Salmonella concentration in broilers was modeled to explore its effect on the likelihood of illness. A Monte Carlo simulation model was created using @RISK. Prevalence of Salmonella in chickens at the retail stage was found to be predominantly important in determining the probability of illness. Other than the prevalence, cooking temperature was found to have the largest impact on the probability of illness. The results also demonstrated that, although chlorination is a powerful tool for decreasing the Salmonella concentration in chicken, this effect did not last long and was negated by the following stages. This study analyzes the effects of variables of the retail-to-table pathway on the likelihood of salmonellosis in broiler consumption, and also evaluates the processing step used to decrease the contamination level of Salmonella in broilers at slaughterhouses. According to the results, we suggest that methods to decrease the contamination level of Salmonella such as chlorination had little effect on decreasing the probability of illness. Overall, these results suggest that preventing contamination of broiler with Salmonella must be a top priority and that methods to reduce the concentration of Salmonella in broilers at slaughterhouses hardly contribute to safe consumption of Salmonella-contaminated chicken.

도축 타조에서 닭 및 돼지 질병에 대한 혈청학적 조사 (Serological survey of diseases to poultry and swine in slaughtered ostriches)

  • As all other intensively farmed domestic species, most mortality in ostriches is closely to rearing conditions. While ostriches is also highly sensitive to stress, species-specific infectious disease play only a minor role. But investigation of ostrich's disease is not peformed almost in Korea. The study was performed to investigate the titers of antibody for Newcastle disease(ND), Infectious bronchitis(IB), Egg drop syndrome '76(EDS), Avian influenza(AI), salmonellosis, Mycoplasma gallisepticum infection(MG), Mycoplasma synoviae infection(MS), Infectious bursal disease(IBD), Brucellosis, Toxoplasmosis, Japanese encephalitis(JE), Porcine parvovirus infection, Encephalomyocarditis and Porcine reproductive respiratory syndrome (PRRS). The results obtained in the 62 ostrich sera slaughtered in Gyeongbuk province were summarized as follows: The average of antibody positive rates to ND, IB, EDS, AI(H9Nl), JE, Porcine parvovirus infection and Encephalomyocarditis by HI test were $75.8\%,\;100\%,\;0\%,\;0\%,\;51.6\%,\;50\%\;and\;56.5\%$ respectively. The antibody positive rates to salmonellosis, MG, MS by plate agglutination test were $12.9\%,\;25.8\%,\;and\;0\%$ respectively. Antibodies to disease agent such as IBD and AI by agar gel precipitation(AGP) test, Brucellosis by tube agglutination, toxoplasmosis by latex agglutination test and PRRS by IFA were all negative.

애완동물을 통해 전파된 것으로 의심되는 비장티푸스성 살모넬라 균혈증 2례 (Two Children with Nontyphoidal Salmonellosis Assumed by Pets)

  • 비장티푸스성 살모넬라균은 그람 음성 간균으로, 인체감염 시 위장관염부터 발열, 균혈증 등의 전신성 증상을 보일 수 있다. 이들의 감염은 주로 음식물을 매개로 이루어지나 애완용 파충류, 양서류, 어류 등을 통한 전파 역시 가능한 것으로 알려져 있다. 하지만 알려진 바에 비해 국내에서 애완용 파충류 및 어류를 통한 살모넬라 감염의 보고는 없는 상황이다. 이에 저자들은 세브란스병원에 발열을 주소로 내원하여 살모넬라 균혈증을 진단받은 2명의 환아를 조사하여 이들의 병력 상 애완용 거북이 및 열대어와의 접촉을 통한 살모넬라 감염의 가능성이 있음을 확인하였다. 최근 애완용 파충류 및 어류의 사육이 증가하고 있는 상황에서 살모넬라 감염을 예방하기 위한 노력이 필요하며, 특히 살모넬라 감염에 의하여 심각한 합병증을 유발할 위험성이 높은 5세 미만의 소아에서는 애완용 파충류 및 어류와의 접촉이 이루어지지 않도록 하는 것이 중요할 것으로 판단되어 이를 증례를 통하여 보고한다.

난백 유래 라이소자임의 마우스 살모넬라증에 대한 항균 및 치료 효과 (Evaluation of antibacterial and therapeutic effects of egg-white lysozyme against Salmonella Typhimurium in ICR mice infected with Salmonella Typhimurium)

  • Salmonellosis is a major bacterial zoonosis that causes self-limited enteritis in animals and foodborne disease and typhoid fever in humans. Recently, multi-drug-resistant strains of Salmonella spp. have increased and caused more serious problems in public health. The present study investigated the antibacterial effects of egg-white lysozyme (EWL) against Salmonella (S.) Typhimurium and the therapeutic effects of EWL for murine salmonellosis. Evaluation of the antibacterial effects of EWL against S. Typhimurium revealed a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of EWL of 6.25 and $300{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. In the bacterial growth inhibition test, EWL at 300 (p < 0.05) and $600{\mu}g/mL$ (p < 0.01) significantly inhibited the growth of S. Typhimurium at 4 h post-incubation. EWL administration at MIC (LYS-1), MBC (LYS-2) and $2{\times}MBC$ (LYS-3) for 14 days resulted in mortality of mice infected with S. Typhimurium of 70, 40 and 10%, respectively, while that of control mice (CON) was 90%. Counts of S. Typhimurium in murine spleens were significantly lower in LYS-2 and LYS-3 than CON (p < 0.05). The results of this study indicate that EWL has the potential for treatment of ICR mice infected with S. Typhimurium.

Evaluation of Antibacterial Effects of a Combination of Coptidis Rhizoma, Lonicerae Flos, Paeonia Japonica Extracts, and Dioctahedral Smectite Against Salmonella Typhimurium in Murine Salmonellosis

  • 본 연구는 황련, 금은화, 그리고 백작약 혼합분말(1:1:1)의 메탄올 추출물(CLP1000)과, 이에 dioctahedral smectite를 혼합한 합제 (CLPS1000)의 살모넬라에 대한 항균효과를 평가하기 위해 수행되었다. CLP1000와 CLPS1000는, 0. 5mg/ml 농도에서 S. typhimurium에 대한 항균효과를 보이지 않았으나, 1.0 mg/ml의 농도에서는 S. typhimurium에 대한 항균활성이 관찰되었다. BALB/c 마우스를 이용한 살모넬라 감염시험에서 Smectite, CLP1000 그리고 CLPS1000을 각각 10 mg/ml 농도로 12일 동안 투여한 결과, 사망률이 각각 90%, 90% 그리고 70%을 보여, CLPS1000이 마우스 살모넬라증에 강력한 효과를 갖고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

이유자돈에서 유기산제의 S. Typhimurium에 대한 효과 (Effects of organic acids on prevention against S. Typhimurium in weaning pigs)

  • Salmonella (S.) Typhimurium infection in pigs is a major source of human foodborne salmonellosis. Recently, the swine industry in Korea has been suffered from salmonellosis causing severe economic loss to farms. Organic acids have antibacterial activity which prevents bacteria from multiplying by reducing the pH in the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of the present study is to evaluate whether $Salstop^{(R)}$ mixed with organic acids is able to have influence on growth performance and whether it prevents against S. Typhimurium in weaning pigs. Four experimental treatments were examined: general diet added with 0.3% of $Salstop^{(R)}$ after S. Typhimurium ($1.0{\times}10^{10}CFU/ml$) challenge, group A; commercial feed after Salmonella ($1.0{\times}10^{10}CFU/ml$) challenge, group B; commercial feed and $Salstop^{(R)}$, group C; commercial feed, Group D. At the end of the study, no significant differences in daily body weight gain and feed intake were observed between groups treated with $Salstop^{(R)}$ and groups treated without, whereas feed conversion ratio (FCR) tended to be improved in groups treated with $Salstop^{(R)}$ between days 1 to 14. Serological and microbiological evolution of the infection were examined by ELISA and microbiological culture from serums and fecal samples, respectively. In groups that challenged by S. Typhimuriums, the group without $Salstop^{(R)}$ showed higher prevalence and bacterial shedding compared to the groups treated with $Salstop^{(R)}$. Our results suggest that the administration of $Salstop^{(R)}$ could be used to promote feed efficiency and to reduce the prevalence of salmonellosis in weaners.
