  • Leukocyte in blood smear image provides significant information to doctors for diagnosis of patient health status. Therefore, it is necessary step to separate leukocyte from blood smear image among various blood cells for early disease prediction. In this paper, we present a saliency map and stepwise region merging based leukocyte segmentation method. Since leukocyte region has salient color and texture, we create a saliency map using these feature map. Saliency map is used for sub-image separation. Then, clustering is performed on each sub-image using mean-shift. After mean-shift is applied, stepwise region-merging is applied to particle clusters to obtain final leukocyte nucleus. The experimental results show that our system can indeed improve segmentation performance compared to previous researches with average accuracy rate of 71%.

  • Over the past decades, a variety of spatial saliency methods have been introduced. Recently, motion saliency has gained much interests, where motion data estimated from an image sequence are utilized. In general, motion saliency requires reliable motion data as well as image segmentation for producing satisfactory saliency map which poses difficulty in most natural images. To overcome this, we propose a motion-based saliency generation that enhances the spatial saliency based on the combination of spatial and motion saliencies as well as motion complexity without the consideration of complex motion classification and image segmentation. Further, an affinity model is integrated for the purpose of connecting close-by pixels with different colors and obtaining a similar saliency. In experiment, we performed the proposed method on eleven test sets. From the objective performance evaluation, we validated that the proposed method produces better result than spatial saliency based on objective evaluation as well as ROC test.

  • A new intelligent stereo vision sensor system was studied for the motion and depth control of unmanned vehicles. A new bottom-up saliency map model for the human-like active stereo vision system based on biological visual process was developed to select a target object. If the left and right cameras successfully find the same target object, the implemented active vision system with two cameras focuses on a landmark and can detect the depth and the direction information. By using this information, the unmanned vehicle can approach to the target autonomously. A number of tests for the proposed bottom-up saliency map were performed, and their results were presented.

  • Image segmentation is widely used in the pre-processing stage of image analysis and, therefore, the accuracy of image segmentation is important for performance of an image-based analysis system. An efficient image segmentation method is proposed, including a filtering process for super-pixels, improved saliency map information, and a merge process. The proposed algorithm removes areas that are not equal or of small size based on comparison of the area of smoothed superpixels in order to maintain generation of a similar size super pixel area. In addition, application of a bilateral filter to an existing saliency map that represents human visual attention allows improvement of separation between objects and background. Finally, a segmented result is obtained based on the suggested merging process without any prior knowledge or information. Performance of the proposed algorithm is verified experimentally.

  • We propose a new saccadic eye movement system with visual selective attention. Saliency map models generate the scan pathways in a natural scene, of which the output makes an attended location. Saccadic eye movement model is used for producing the target trajectories to move the attended locations very rapidly. To categorize human saccadic eye movement, saccadic eye movement model was divided into three parts, each of which was then individually modeled using different neural networks to reflect a principal functionality of brain structures related with the saccadic eye movement in our brain. Based on the proposed saliency map models and the saccadic eye movement model, an active vision system using a CCD type camera and BLDC motor was developed and demonstrated with experimental results.

  • Image saliency detection is the basis of perceptual image processing, which is significant to subsequent image processing methods. Most saliency detection methods can detect only a single object with a high-contrast background, but they have no effect on the extraction of a salient object from images with complex low-contrast backgrounds. With the prior knowledge, this paper proposes a method for detecting salient objects by combining the boundary contrast map and the geodesics-like maps. This method can highlight the foreground uniformly and extract the salient objects efficiently in images with low-contrast backgrounds. The classical receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve, which compares the salient map with the ground truth map, does not reflect the human perception. An ROC curve with distance (distance receiver operating characteristic, DROC) is proposed in this paper, which takes the ROC curve closer to the human subjective perception. Experiments on three benchmark datasets and three low-contrast image datasets, with four evaluation methods including DROC, show that on comparing the eight state-of-the-art approaches, the proposed approach performs well.

  • In computer vision, salient object is important to extract the useful information of foreground. With active contour analysis acting as the core in this paper, we propose a bottom-up saliency detection algorithm combining with the Bayesian model and the global color distribution. Under the supports of active contour model, a more accurate foreground can be obtained as a foundation for the Bayesian model and the global color distribution. Furthermore, we establish a contour-based selection mechanism to optimize the global-color distribution, which is an effective revising approach for the Bayesian model as well. To obtain an excellent object contour, we firstly intensify the object region in the source gray-scale image by a seed-based method. The final saliency map can be detected after weighting the color distribution to the Bayesian saliency map, after both of the two components are available. The contribution of this paper is that, comparing the Harris-based convex hull algorithm, the active contour can extract a more accurate and non-convex foreground. Moreover, the global color distribution can solve the saliency-scattered drawback of Bayesian model, by the mutual complementation. According to the detected results, the final saliency maps generated with considering the global color distribution and active contour are much-improved.

  • Extracting key visual information from images containing natural scene is a challenging task and an important step for the visually impaired to recognize information based on tactile graphics. In this study, a novel method is proposed for extracting salient regions based on global contrast enhancement and saliency cuts in order to improve the process of recognizing images for the visually impaired. To accomplish this, an image enhancement technique is applied to natural scene images, and a saliency map is acquired to measure the color contrast of homogeneous regions against other areas of the image. The saliency maps also help automatic salient region extraction, referred to as saliency cuts, and assist in obtaining a binary mask of high quality. Finally, outer boundaries and inner edges are detected in images with natural scene to identify edges that are visually significant. Experimental results indicate that the method we propose in this paper extracts salient objects effectively and achieves remarkable performance compared to conventional methods. Our method offers benefits in extracting salient objects and generating simple but important edges from images containing natural scene and for providing information to the visually impaired.
