From Salix maximowiczii of the Korean Salix, morphological and palynological characters were investigated by stereoscopic, light, and scanning electron microscopes. Also, this study was eonducted to investigate the effect of meteorological factors on the disjunct distribution in Salix maximowiczii forests grown within the restricted region. 1. Morphological characters of S. maximowiczii clarified with the descriptions and figures. 2. The palynological description was made to the S. maximowiczii and identified distinctly species. 3. S. maximowiczii is distributed only in Baekdam and Hangyeryong valley of Mt. Sorak in Kangwon-do, and valley of height region in Kyeongseong-gun (Hamgyongbuk-do), Sinhueng-gun, and Pungsan-gun (Hamgyongnam-do) in North Korea. 4. Water factors was better than temperature factors in the influence of meteorological factors for disjunct distribution. 5. These ecological and taxonomical informations could be used in practical application for silvicultural prescription, such as erosion control forest, timber production, and development of green area in river bank.
Host plants of Ectinohoplia rufipes (Mitschulsky) were investigated in golf courses in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi. Ten plant species in 7 families were observed to be fed on from golf courses. Thus, total number of host plants of Ectinohoplia rufipes were 94 species in 30 families. Rhododendron indicum and Rhododendron japonicum for. flavum in Ericaceae, Euonymus alata for. ciliato-dentatus in Celastraceae, Ulmus davidiana for. suberosa in Ulmaceae, Malus pumila var. dulcissima and Malus baccata in Rosaceae, Weigela florida for. subricdor in Caprifoliaceae, Betula platyphylla var. japonica in Betulaceae, Salix purpurea var. japonica in Salicaceae, and Quercus palustris in Fagaceae were newly listed host plants of Ectinohoplia rufipes in golf courses. Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Malus pumila var. dulcissima and Quercus palustris were heavily damaged host plants of Ectinohoplia rufipes.

Oxidative stress caused by the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is known as an etiology of neurodegenerative diseases. Populus tomentiglandulosa (PT), a member of the Salicaceae family, is widely grown in Korea and has been reported to exert protective effects on cerebral ischemia by attenuating of oxidative stress and neuronal damage. In the present study, we investigated the antioxidant activity and neuroprotective effects of an ethanol extract and four fractions [n-butanol, ethyl acetate (EtOAc), chloroform, and n-hexane] of PT under in vitro and cellular systems. The extract and four fractions of PT showed 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), •OH, and O2- radical scavenging activities in a dose-dependent manner. In particular, the EtOAc fraction of PT had the strongest DPPH, •OH, and O2- radical scavenging activities among the extract and other fractions. Therefore, we further investigated the neuroprotective effect of the EtOAc fraction of PT against oxidative stress in H2O2-induced SH-SY5Y cells. Treatment with H2O2 significantly decreased cell viability and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and it also increased the ROS levels compared to the normal group. However, treatment with the EtOAc fraction of PT significantly increased cell viability. Moreover, the EtOAc fraction of PT-treated group significantly suppressed ROS production and LDH release compared to the H2O2-induced control group. In conclusion, our findings indicated that PT had in vitro antioxidant activity and neuroprotective effects against oxidative stress. Therefore, PT could be used as a natural agent for protection against oxidative stress.
The present study was conducted during the period July 18-August 11, 1981, at the four industrial complexes(Pohang, Ulsan, Onsan, and Yeochon) using the naked eye method. The study included the survey of plant species growing within a 2km from the area of pollution source, selection of plants tolerant to air pollution and effects of pollution on their growth. The results obtained are as follows; 1) Vascular plants surveyed as to industrial complexes consist of 90 families, 6 subfamilies, 213 genera and 290 species. Major plant families and species for each area are as follows: 1) Pohang area: 54 families, 102 genera and 126 species Leguminosae(16) Graminae(11), Compositae(9) Rosaceae(9) 2) Ulsan area: 61 families, 131 genera, and 158 species Compositae(17) Gramineae(16) Leguminosae(15) Rosaceae(9) Polygonaceae(9) Solanaceae(6) 3) Onsan area: 46 families, 98 genera, and 158 species Compositae(12) Gramineae(12) Leguminosae(12) Rosaceae(6) Polygonaceae(6) 4) Yeochon: 71 families, 150 genera, and 188 species Rosaceae(15) Leguminosae(15) Compositae(14) Graminese(14) Polygonaceae(8) Salicaceae(6) 2. Table 1 shows tolerant plants to air pollution in this study. 3. The following plants may be recommended as planting species at the industrial complex area. Leguminosae: Amorpha fruticosa L. Lespedeza bicolor Turcz. Lespedeza maximowiczii Schneider Robinia pseudoacacia L. Sophora japonica L. Fagaceae: Quercus acutissima Carr. Quercus serrata Thunb. Quercus variabilis Bl. Salicaceae: Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee Salix Pseudo-lasiogyne Leveille Oleaceae: Ligustrum japonicum Thunb. Ligustrum obtusifolumn S. et Z. Betulaceae: Alnus hirsuta (Space) Ruprecht Celastraceae: Euonymus japonicus thunb. Cparifolicceae: Viburnum awabucki K. Koch. Pinaceae: Cedrus deodara Loundon.
Based on the analysis of ecomorphological characters for 84 tree and shrub species, climax indices were estimated so as to interpret the position of the successional sere for the species in the natural deciduous forest. Nineteen ecomorphological characters, considered to be associated with successional gradient in the forest, were selected for the study. One of 2 to 4 steps per character for each species was given on a standardized scale of increasing climaxness, and the index was computed by percent of the sum of the scoring values for total score. Calculated mean value of 54.2 for all indices. Carpinus laxiflora had the highest index value of 83.3, and Populus davidiana recorded the lowest of 18.8. The most climax group, greater than 70 of the index, contained only 9 species, intermediate group, between 40 to 70 of the index, had 58 species, and the most pioneer group, less than 40 of the index comprised 17 species. The result has noticed that the large number of species would take advantage of most diverse resource and niche in the intermediate stage of the sere in the forest. The three components, i.e., light absorption, reproduction, and wood quality were used as axes for a 3-dimensional projection of the relative position for 44 species by principal component analysis. Along the similar ecomorphological characters, four recognized species group were classified by cluster analysis. The distribution pattern of plant families on the index gradient showed that the Betulaceae and Aceraceae had the widest seral amplitude, and the Salicaceae was a family typified as pioneer. There were no families specializing entirely with climax niche.
Taxonomic distribution of ecto- and endomycorrhizae among woody species growing in Korea was studied and their distribution was compared with foreign literature, Most of root samples were collected from Central Branch Station of forest Research Institute in Gwangneung, Gyonggido. A total of 32 families, 63 genera, 102 species were examined. Ectomycorrhizae were observed in the following 13 general of Pinaceae (Pinus Larix, Picea, Abies), Salicaceae (Populus, salix), Betulace (Alnus, Betula, Carpinus, Corpylus), Fagaceae(Quercus, Casianea), and Tiliaceae (Tilia), Endomycorrhizae (vesicular-arbuscular) were observed in Populus and the rest of the 49 genera. Rhus was the only genus which did not have either ecto- or endomycorrhizae, while foreign literature listed following genera having both mycorrhizal types: Juniperus, Cupressus, Populus, Salix, Juglans, Alnus, Ulmus, Malus, Pyrus, and Tilia. Juniperus, Ulmus, Pyrus, and Acer which were reported to have facultative ectomycorrhizae were free of ectomycorrhizae, Some morphological characteristics of endomycorrhizae are shown in photogrphs and discussed.
These studies were carried out to identify anatomical characteristics of ray parenchyma of xylem tissue of trunk in 6 species of Populus and 5 species of Salix which were grown in Korea. The results of these experiments were summarized as follows: In the type of ray parenchyma, Populus had uniseriate homogeneous ray tissue and Sahx had uniseriate heterogeneous ray tissue. Upright ray cells among uniseriate heterogeneous ray tissue in Salix were subdivided into rectangular type and square type. The minimum and maximum length of procumbent ray cells of Populus ranged $26.84-212.28{\mu}$ and those of Salix were $46.36-170.80{\mu}$. However rectangular type of upright ray cell n Salix were $26.84-70.76{\mu}$ and square type were $17.08-43.92{\mu}$. The minimum and maximum width of procumbent ray cells of Populus ranged $12.20-24.40{\mu}$ but those of Salix were $12.20-26.84{\mu}$. However, rectangular type of upright ray cell in Salix were $9.76-41.48{\mu}$ and square type were $19.52-46.36{\mu}$. The height of ray parenchyma of Populus in tangential section ranged $65.88-414.80{\mu}$ but Salix were $65.88-439.20{\mu}$. Ray parenchyma width of Populus ranged $4.88-24.40{\mu}$ but those of Salix were $7.32-21.96{\mu}$. The number of ray parenchyma cells of Populus in tangential section were 3-26 cell, but Salix were 2-21 cells.
