  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the cause of the continous increase of Sagittaria trifolia dominance and it's effective control methods in the paddy rice fields. Early physilogical response of S. trifolia caused by sulfonylurea three herbicides resulted in growth cessation. However, the growth-ceased plant regrew after the certain period of time. Pyrazolate{4-[2, 4-dichloro benzoyl]-1, 3-dimethylpyrazol-5-yl-ptoluene sulphonate} could control S. trifolia until 6-7 leaf stages. The herbicidal activity of S. trifolia by pyrazolate was not related to the size of tuber and the amount of carbohydrate consumption in the tuber. The production of S. trifolia tubers inhibited more than 95% by the systematic treatment of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl{Ethyl-5-(4, 6-dimethoxy pyrimidin-2-yl carbomoyl sulfamoyl)-2-chloro-2', 6'-diethyl acetanilide}, cinosulfuron and pyrazolate after the first treatment of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl and pyrazolate.

  • Since sulfonylurea (SU) herbicide-resistant Monochoria korsakowii in Seosan reclaimed land in 1998 was reported first, herbicide-resistant weed species and their area of occurrence have been steadily increasing. In recent years, Sagittaria trifolia resistant to SU herbicides has been reported in Gimhae, Gyeongnam province. While collecting S. trifolia for constructing barcode database of major weeds we were suspicious by the continuous variation in the leave morphology of the species. In order to identify the S. trifolia from S. aginash we barcoded the species collected from domestic using ITS and compared the sequence variation with the ITS sequences of S. aginash downloaded from NCBI. As a result, it was found that the plants collected from the domestic did not have any variation among individuals although they showed wide morphological variation. On the other hand, interspecific variation between S. trifolia and S. aginash was 4.6%. Plants that are difficult to identify using morphological characters can be identified quickly and accurately using the barcode technique. Herbicide-resistant weeds may require different management practices depending on the species even in the same genus. Domestic herbicide-resistant weeds are steadily increasing. Therefore, accurate identification of these species must be preceded for effective weed control.

  • Four methods of vegetation analysis were compared to determine the most suitable method to use in transplanted rice. The highest number of weed species, 14 was obtained with the list quadrat method while the least number, 8 was obtained with the line intercept method. The clip quadrat method tended to overestimate weed species with a low moisture content such as Sagittaria trifolia L. and Ludwigia prostrata Roxb while for the list quadrat method, weed species with a high moisture content such as Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. and Monochoria vaginalis (Burm. f) Pres 1 were overestimated. With the line intercept method, weed species having conspicuous leaf blades such as S. trifolia and Potamogeton distinctus Benn. were dominant. Of the methods tested, the line intercept method was the least desirable because it accounted for the least number of weed species. Any of the others could be use for vegetation analysis without any significant problems arising. However, preference was given to the point quadrat method because of the ease of measurement. It was also less tedious and less time consuming than the other methods.

  • To study ecological characteristics of Sagitiaria pygmaea and Sagittaria trifolia occurring in Korea their propagules were collected from 3 locations (Sagittaria pygmaea: Chuncheon, Suweon, Milyang; Sagittaria trifolia: Suweon, Iri, Jeonju) in 1981, cultured and replanted 4 times (May 20, June 5, June 20, July 5) in 1982. Sagitraria pygmaea from Suweon flowered earlier than those from Chuncheon and Milyang in the plants planted on May 20, but this was reversed in another planting dates. Three storied inflorescence was observed newly in Sagittaria pygmaea. Sagittaria pygmaea from Iri and Jeonju had more number of tillers, but less number of tubers per tiller than those from Suweon. Sagittaria rrifolia from Chuncheon flowered earlier than those from Suweon and Milyang. Sagirtaria trifolia from Milyang was narrower in the upper leaf width and less in the number of tubers per plant than those from Chuncheon and Suweon. Each of local collections may be regarded as different ecotype based on the above differences.

  • The experiments were conducted to identify the herbicidal effect of 2,4-D{ (2,4-dichlorophenoxy) acetic acid}, 2,4-D ethylester {ethyl 2,4- dichlorophenoxy acetate} and bentazon{3- isopropyl-1H-2,1,3- benzothiazin- 4-(3H)one 2,2-dioxide} on Sagittaria trifolia. Both 2,4-D and 2,4-D ethylester could completely control S. trifolia when applied before 80 days after transplanting of the tubers (DAT), but the weeding effect by bentazone decreased when applied after 60 DAT. 2,4-D and 2,4-D ethylester were effectively translocated from the treated parts to growing point. They killed S. trifolia completely when applied at 80 DAT under 3cm standing water depths, but the controlling effect by bentazone decreased at deeper than 1cm standing water depth. Formation of S. trifolia tuber was effectively suppressed with 2,4-D at 7g ai/10a and 2,4-D ethylester at 6g ai/10a when applied 60 DAT.

  • This study was conducted to predict the rice yield loss and to determine the economic threshold levels for direct-seeding flooded rice cultivation from competition to the most serious weeds, Sagittaria trifolia L. and Bidens frondosa L. The rice yield loss models of S. trifolia and B. frondosa were predicted as Y = 497.0/(1+0.003760x), $R^2$=0.869 and Y = 486.0/(1+0.007612x), $R^2$ = 0.887, respectively. In comparison of the competitiveness represented by parameter ${\beta}$, it was 0.003760 in S. trifolia and 0.007612 in B. frondosa, respectively. Economic thresholds calculated using Cousens' equation was negatively related with the competitiveness of weed. The economic thresholds of S. trifolia and B. frondosa were 7.6 and 3.9 plants per $m^2$, respectively.

  • The experiment was carried out to obtain the basic information of weed control in lowland rice field in Gyeongbug province. The results were as follows : In weed distribution on life cycle, annual weed was occupied by 56.5% and perennials were 43.5%, respectively. In morphological distribution of weeds, grass weed was 25.2%, sedges was 12.3% and broad leaf weeds was 62.5%. In particular, weed occurrence of grass weed was much more increased than that of 1971 and 1981 year. Dominant weed species was Echinochloa crusgralli, Sagittaria trifolia, Eleocharis kuroguwai and Monochoria vaginalis in plain land, mid alpine area, and cold salty wind area. Dominant weeds was approximately similar occurrence in normal soil and poorly drained soil Gelds, but sandy soil field was not. Echinochloa crusgalli was dominant in hand transplanting and direct seeding on dry paddy field. Meanwhile, in machine transplanting, Sagittaria trifolia and Ludwigia prostrate were dominant, and occurrence of Echinochloa crusgalli was increased to delaying transplanting. As a result, major dominant weed was Echinochloa crusgalli, Sagittaria trifolia, Ludwigia prostrate, Eleocharis kuroguwai, and Monochoria vaginalis in terms of predominance.

  • A new disease of arrowhead (Sagittaria trifolia L.)caused by Plectosporium tabacinum was observed at Yusung area in Korea. Infection occurred on the petioles, leaves, and seeds of young and old arrowhead plants. Small and brown spots developed on the infected areas initially, which later coalesced to form large dead areas resulting in the complete blight of the host plant. Inoculation of arrowhead seedlings by conidial suspension induced typical disease symptoms found in naturally infected plants. The new name for the disease 'arrowhead blight' is suggested. The pathogenic fungus was identified as Plectosporium tabacinum and its morphological and cultural characteristics are described.

  • The nationwide weed survey was conducted in lowland rice fields over whole country of Korea in 1992 in order to determine a change of weed community and to identify a major dominant weed species and/or problem weed. Based on morphological characteristics of weeds, population ratio of broad leaf weed was 42.6%, grasses weed-9.0%, sedges-33.4% and others were 15.0%. Annual weed was 33.4% while perennial weed was 66.6% in terms of life cycle of weeds. Meanwhile, there was different weed occurrence as affected by planting method of the rice plant. In hand transplanted paddy fields predominant weed species was Sagittaria trifolia L., Monochoria vaginalis Presl., and Aneilema japonica Kunth. In machine transplanted rice fields of infant and young rice seedling Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi. and S. trifolia L. were more predominant. There was high occurrence of M. vaginalis, Echinochloa crus-galli L., and Leesia japonica Makino in water seeding while E. crus-galli and Cyperus serotinus Rottb. were predominant weed species in dry seeded rice. Monoculture of the rice plant would cause to high occurrence of E. kuroguwai, S. trifolia, M. vaginalis, E. crus-galli, and Sagittaria pygmaea Miq and there was higher population of S. trifolia, S. pygmaea, M. vaginalis, E crus-galli, and E. kuroguwai in double cropping system based on rice culture. In particular, there was high different weed occurrence under different transplanting times. E. kuroguwai, S. trifolia, S. pygmaea, M. vaginalis, and C. serotinus were higher population at the transplanting of 25 May and S. trifolia, E crus-galli, C. serotinus, and M. vaginalis at 10 June and S. pygmaea, E. kuroguwai, M. vaginalis, S. trifolia, and E. crusgalli at 25 June in Korea, respectively. Autumn tillage in terms of tillage time would cause more predominant weed species such as S. trifolia, E. kuroguwai, M. vaginalis, and S. pygmaea while spring tillage was higher population of E. kuroguwai, S. trifolia, E. crusgalli, M. vaginalis, and S. pygmaea. In plain area of paddy field there was higher occurrence of E. kuroguwai, S. trifolia, M. vaginalis, E. crus-galli, and S. pygmaea and in mid-mountainous area S. trifolia, E. kuroguwai, M. vaginalis, E. crus-galli, and Ludwigia prostrate Roxb. while in mountainous area S. trifolia, M. vaginalis, Potamogeton distinctus Ben., E. kuroguwai, and E. crus-galli were. In 1992 the most ten predominant weed species at the rice field of Korea based on summed dominant ratio(SDR) were E. kuroguwai > S. trifolia > E. crus-galli > M. vaginalis > S. pygmaea > C. serotinus > L. prostrate > P. distinctus > A. japonica > Scirpus juncoides Roxb.
