This study suggests a generalized availability and safety evaluation model to evaluate the influences to the system's fault tolerant capabilities depending on automatic fault detection function such as the automatic periodic testings. The conventional evaluation model of automatic fault detection function deals only with the self diagnostics, and supposes that the fault detection coverage of self diagnostics is always constant. But all of the fault detection methods could be degraded. For example, the periodic surveillance test has the potential human errors or test equipment errors, the self diagnostics has the potential degradation of built-in logics, and the automatic periodic testing has the potential degradation of automatic test facilities. The suggested evaluation models have incorporated the loss or erroneous behaviors of the automatic fault detection methods. The availability and the safety of each module of the safety grade platform have been evaluated as they were applied the automatic periodic test methodology and the fault tolerant evaluation models. The availability and safety of the safety grade platform were improved when applied the automatic periodic testing. Especially the fault tolerant capability of the processor module with a weak self-diagnostics and the process parameter input modules were dramatically improved compared to the conventional cases. In addition, as a result of the safety evaluation of the digital reactor protection system, the system safety of the digital parts was improved about 4 times compared to the conventional cases.
This paper is a technical review of the research and development results of the Korea Nuclear Instrumentation and Control System (KNICS) project and Nu-Tech 2012 program. In these projects man-machine interface system architecture, two digital platforms, and several control and protection systems were developed. One platform is a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) for a digital safety system and another platform is a Distributed Control System (DCS) for a non-safety control system. With the safety-grade platform PLC, a reactor protection system, an engineered safety feature-component control system, and reactor core protection system were developed. A power control system was developed based on the DCS. A logic alarm cause tracking system was developed as a man-machine interface for APR1400. Also, Integrated Performance Validation Facility (IPVF) was developed for the evaluation of the function and performance of developed I&C systems. The safety-grade platform PLC and the digital safety system obtained approval for the topical report from the Korean regulatory body in February of 2009. A utility and vendor company will determine the suitability of the KNICS and Nu- Tech 2012 products to apply them to the planned nuclear power plants.

To support the expansion of the autonomous robot market, the establishment of evaluation standards of the robot performance are essential. In this paper, to venture the standardization of the performance evaluation of the autonomous robot, the authors take the autonomous cleaning robot(ACR) as the initial stepping stone. Recently, the ACR has been being developed and marketed actively in many countries including Korea and it believes to be the fore-runner among various types of autonomous robot products. Standards of the performance evaluation for the ACR could be easily modified and applied to other autonomous robots. This paper formulates and suggests a group of standards for the performance evaluation based on a evaluation platform for the ACR. The newly developed performance evaluation platform has been designed to include all the important aspects of living environments in reality. In the platform the performance of the ACR is measured in terms of mobility, cleaning performance, avoidance of obstruction(safety), and operation noise. A few commercially available ACR products are collected and tested in the evaluation platform and compared against the performance evaluation standards formulated.
In this study, damage resulting from internal flaws was investigated by finite element analysis for the safety evaluation of a non-destructive testing platform for hydrogen pressure vessels. A specimen was modeled and calculated using finite element analysis to determine material properties in accordance with the parameters of the composite material in order to assess the safety of the Type 4 hydrogen pressure vessel. Through this, flaws in the hydrogen pressure vessel were modeled, and test conditions were provided in accordance with rules to look into whether there was safety. Delamination, foreign object, and vertical cracks were modeled for internal flaws, and damage was examined in accordance with failure criteria. As the delamination defect approached the interior of the hydrogen pressure tank, it became more likely to cause damage. Additionally, as the crack depth grew in the case of vertical cracks, the likelihood of crack propagation rose. On the other hand, it was anticipated that the foreign item defect would suffer more damage from the outside in. A non-destructive testing platform will be used to assess the safety of fuel cell vehicles that are already in operation in future research.

The results from the research show that the analysed connector design (Rigid Pontoon Connector) provides a highly efficient and practical solution to facilitate connection of stable floating platform.
Dweller's safety is one of the most important factors for the evaluation of building performance. The process of conventional safety design which is normally performed by the codes and designer's experiences is not enough to check the whole possibilities of unexpected accidents in the built environment. It means that the dwellers might be always exposed by the dangerous situation which should have been removed in the architectural design process. In order to solve this problem, this study intends to introduce a rule-based performance evaluation technology based on BIM(Building Information Modeling). The proposed technology focuses on the real time evaluation of dweller's safety in the ordinary life in the designed building alternatives and uses a commercial BIM tool as a design and evaluation platform.
The purpose of this study were to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of the portable slipmeters with respect to actual slipping and to compare their output with those of force platform. The selected slipmeters were commonly used devices for slipperiness measurement in situ floors. Their output quantity represented force (BOT-3000), loss of energy(British pendulum striker) and angle of inclination(English XL). The validity of these devices was studied with respect to actual slipping using a force platform. The precision of these devices was also evaluated with force platform. Based on dynamics of human subject behavior when slipping during normal walking, the all devices tested in this study showed poor performances: low built up ratio, low normal pressure, and long contact time prior to slip. Nevertheless, their results reasonably correlated with those calculated from the ground reaction forces generated by the operation of the selected slipmeters on the force platform although the absolute values of COF from these three devices could be quite different. Also the results showed good repeatability under the some test conditions.
We have evaluated the structural stability of a platform screen door due to train wind pressure. The platform screen door was installed at the ground and underground station and had 65 meters in length. Also, the platform screen door was a safety device because it was placed between the train and the platform. The finite element analysis was used to calculate the stresses and deflections of platform screen door caused by wind pressure using ANSYS 10.0. Quasi-static analysis was introduced to save calculating time and check quickly structural performances when compared to those of transient analysis. The results show that structural stability of the platform screen door under train wind pressure is proven and quasi-static analysis can quickly check the structural integrity of platform screen door.

The collapse of bridges can cause massive casualties and economic losses. Therefore, it is thus essential to evaluate the structural safety of bridges. For this task, structural reliability analysis, considering various bridge-related uncertainty factors, is often used. This paper proposes a new computational platform to perform structural reliability analysis for bridges and evaluate their structural safety under various loading conditions. For this purpose, a software package of reliability analysis, Finite Element Reliability Using MATLAB (FERUM), was integrated with MIDAS/CIVIL, which is a widely-used commercial software package specialized for bridges. Furthermore, a graphical user interface (GUI) control module has been added to FERUM to overcome the limitations of software operation. In this study, the proposed platform was applied to a simple frame structure, and the analysis results of the FORM (First-Order Reliability Method) and MCS (Monte Carlo simulation), which are representative reliability analysis methods, were compared. The proposed platform was verified by confirming that the calculated failure probability difference was less than 5%. In addition, the structural safety of a pre-stressed concrete (PSC) bridge was evaluated considering the KL-510 vehicle model. The proposed new structural reliability analysis platform is expected to enable an effective reliability-based safety evaluation of bridges.
