  • Over the last few decades, many researches have been conducted in order to find solution to the problem of corrosion in steel reinforced concrete. As a result, methods such as the use of stainless steel bars, epoxy coatings, and concrete additives, etc., have been tried. While effective in some situations, such remedies may still be unable to completely eliminate the problems of steel corrosion. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) elements are appealing as reinforcement due to some material properties such as high tensile strength, low density, and noncorrosive. However, due to the generally lower modulus of elasticity of FRP in comparison with the steel and the linear behavior of FRP, certain aspects of the structural behavior of RC members reinforced with FRP may be substantially different from similar elements reinforced with steel reinforcement. This paper presents the flexural behavior of one-way concrete slabs reinforced with FRP bars. They were simply supported and tested in the laboratory under static loading conditions to investigate their crack pattern and width, deflections, strains and mode of failure. The experimental results shows that behavior of the FRP reinforced slabs was bilinearly elastic until failure. Also, the results show that the FRP overreinforced concrete beams in this study can be safe for design in terms of deformability.

  • At the initial stage of the underground reservoir design one should thoroughly consider surface and subsurface hydrology, hydrogeologic characteristics of aquifer system, and the function of cut - off wall because it is linked to the effective management. In this study, three dimensional finite difference model was applied to analyse the function of Ian underground reservoir at Kyungbuk Province. The steady and unsteady state conditions after construction of the underground dam were simulated through the model, and from these results the groundwater budget and the safe yield were determined. The model simulation indicates the infiltration of irrigation water to be one of the major factors of seasonal fluctuation of groundwater level. The recharge rates of irrigation water were estimated as 4.3mm/d during May and June, and 1.7mm/d during July and Agust. Groundwater recharge from the watershed area estimated to about $0.04m^3/s$, almost consistent through the year. In 1984, groundwater discharge through the transverse section of the dam was $0.002m^3/s$ and the optimum yield for two momths(July and Aguest)was $254000m^3$, however, the discharge became $0.013m^3/s$ in1993, implying the failure of cut -off function. without appropaiate of the cut - off wall, optiumum yield during the irrigaton period would be $93, 000m^3$.

  • In this study, a piezoelectric smart sensor that can be embedded inside of concrete structures is developed to investigate the early stage of concrete curing. A waterproof coating is used to protect the piezoelectric sensor from moistures of concrete mixture. Also, a mortar case is utilized to encapsulate the sensor to protect it from impact loads. To estimate the strength of concrete, a self-sense guided-wave actuated sensing technique is applied. In the guided wave, its velocity is varied according to the mechanical properties of concrete such as modulus of elasticity. Because modulus of elasticity directly affects the strength of concrete, the guidedwave's velocity also affects the concrete strength development. To verify the feasibility of using the proposed approach, the smart sensor was embedded into a 100MPa concrete cylinder and the self-sense guided wave is continuously measured throughout the curing process. The measurements showed that the propagation time (TOF) of the measured guided waves gradually decreased as the curing age increased. Especially, at the early age of the curing process, the variation of the TOF was very significant. Furthermore, the results showed that there is a linear relationship between the TOF of the self-sense guided waves and the strength of concrete existed. It is safe to conclude that the proposed approach can be used very effectively in monitoring of the strength development of high strength concrete structures.

  • I-D-F curves were induced by Box-Cox transformation using rainfall data from five major cities in Korea: Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Gwangju, as well as from Sancheong (South Gyeongsang province) and Yeongcheon (North Gyeongsang province) stations. The practicality of the Box-Cox transformation is more scalable than the traditional method of frequency analysis in terms of applicability because it is available even if the analysis data are insufficient to perform general frequency analysis and do not produce an appropriate probability density function. For the case in which rainfall data for the entire period (10-1440 minutes) and short-term period (20, 30, 40, 50 minutes) at the foregoing 7 stations are omitted, there was a relative error of -23.0 % to 14.7 % at a duration of 10 to 60 minutes below the 100-year frequency. Accordingly, rainfall analysis requires inducing I-D-F curves, including for the short term (20, 30, 40, 50 minutes), and if rainfall data are omitted for the short term (20, 30, 40, 50 minutes), it is necessary to increase the existing margin rate depending on the point in order to ensure the safe design of small-scale hydraulic structures.

  • The purpose of this work is to gain a better understanding of the interrelationships between geological structures and slope failure in sedimentary rocks. In the studied slopes, construction-related slope failure could only be observed on the south-dipping slopes. This indicates that slope stability may be dependent on the angular relationships between the dip direction of bedding and the orientation of the slope. Slope failure continued, post-construction, around large fault zones in the studied outcrop; these fault damage zones are, however, not easily recognized in the field. Here we suggest a new method that uses accumulated fracture density to precisely identify fault damage zones. Multiple-faced slopes are now increasingly being exposed during large-scale construction projects in South Korea. This multiple-faced slope analysis indicates that the stability of a slope should be evaluated by identifying domains, through the analysis of possible slopes and their angular relationships with bedding and other discontinuities, prior to construction. Therefore, careful consideration of geological structures such as bedding and other discontinuities, and their angular relationships during the design of cuttings through sedimentary rocks, will increase the efficiency of construction and enable the safe construction of more stable slopes that will retain their stability after construction.

  • Using driving simulation, this study investigated the effects of driver's trust in the adaptive cruise control (ACC) system and road density on driver's workload and situation awareness. The drivers were allocated into one of four experimental conditions manipulated by ACC system trust level (trust-increased vs. trust-decreased) and road congestion (high vs. low). The workload and situational awareness of the participants were measured as dependent variables. The results showed followings. First, trust-decreased group for the ACC system had significantly lower trust scores for the system in all of the measurement items, including reducing the driving load and securing safe driving due to the use of this system, than the trust-increased group. Second, the trust-decreased group showed a slower reaction time in the secondary tasks and higher subjective workload than trust-increased group. Third, in contrast, the situational awareness for the driving situation was significantly higher in the trust-decreased group than trust-increased group. The results of this study showed that the driver's trust in the ACC system can affect the various information processing performed while driving. Also, these results suggest that trust in the user's system should be considered as an important variable in the design of an automated driving assistance system.

  • Purpose Iodine (I-131) is one of the most widely used radioactive isotopes for therapeutic in the field of nuclear medicine. Therapeutic I-131 capsule is made out of lead to shield high energy radiation. Accurate dosimetry is necessarily required to perform safe and effective work for relative workers. The Monte Carlo method is known as a method to predict the absorbed dose distribution most accurately in radiation therapy and many researchers constantly attempt to apply this method to the dose calculation of radiotherapy recently. This paper aims to calculate distance dependent and activity dependent therapeutic I-131 capsule using GEANT4. Materials and Methods Therapeutic capsules was implemented on the basis of the design drawings. The simulated dose was determined by generating of gamma rays of energy to more than 364 keV. The simulated dose from the capsule at the distance of 10 cm and 100 cm was measured and calculated in the model of water phantom. The simulated dose were separately calculated for each position of each detector. Results According to the domestic regulation on radiation safety, the dose at 10 cm and 100 cm away from the surface of therapeutic I-131 capsule should not exceed 2.0 mSv/h and 0.02 mSv/h, respectively. The simulated doses turned out to be less than the limit, satisfying the domestic regulation. Conclusion These simulation results may serve as useful data in the prediction of hands dose absorbed by I-131 capsule handling. GEANT4 is considered that it will be effectively used in order to check the radiation dose.

  • The strength safety of high pressure gas cylinder has been analyzed by using a finite element method. In this study, the internal gas pressures of a steel bombe include a service charging pressure of $9kg/cm^2$, high limit charging pressure of $18.6kg/cm^2$, high limit of safety valve operation pressure $24.5kg/cm^2$, and hydraulic testing pressure of $34.5kg/cm^2$. The computed FEM results indicate that the strength safety for a service charging pressure of $9kg/cm^2$ and high limit charging pressure of $18.6kg/cm^2$ is safe because the stress of a gas cylinder is within yield strength of steel. But the stress for a hydraulic testing pressure of $34.5kg/cm^2$ sufficiently exceeds the yield strength and remains under the tensile strength. If the hydraulic testing pressures frequently apply to the gas cylinder, the bombe may be fractured because a fatigue residual stress is accumulated on the lower round end plate due to a plastic deformation. The computed results show that the concentrated force in which is applied on a skirt zone does not affect to the lower round end plate, and the most weak zone of a bombe is a middle part of a lower round end plate between a bombe body and a skirt for a gas pressure. Thus, the FEM results show that the profile of a lower round end plate is an important design parameter of a high pressure gas cylinder.

  • To construct buildings on limited land, the size of the building is important. The development process needs to be minimized because determining the size of a structurally safe building at the planning stage incurs considerable time and cost. This study proposes the Limit Slenderness Ratio Approximation Equation. This study examined an outrigger structure system among several systems proposed for controlling the lateral displacement in tall buildings. This study compared the Limit Slenderness Ratio Approximation Equation with the approximate equation by changing the variables of the building model, and examined the size of the building using the approximate Equation. As an analysis program, the MAIDAS architectural structural analysis program was used to conduct model-specific analysis. The appropriate scale of the building to minimize the error between the approximate value calculated by the Limit Slenderness Ratio Approximation Equation and the analysis result of the structural analysis program is as follows. As the number of outrigger installation increases, the error can be reduced; the ratio of the cores is reasonable, from 20% to 30%, and the arrangement of the column is suitable only for the outer column without an internal column.

  • The Korean Peninsula is no longer safe from volcanic disasters. Therefore, the Korean government has been developing a spatial information-based system implementation technology since 2014. VDRS (Volcanic Disaster Response System), which is the result of the technology, was implemented in 2016 as Phase I. Since then, phase II implementation technology has been developed for an advanced system reflecting the user's requirements. To advance the system, redesign architecture is essential. This paper examined the redesign application architecture for an advanced VDRS. First, existing application architecture, which was implemented in phase I, was analyzed. Second, the user's requirements for advanced VDRS were analyzed. The analyzed user's requirements were categorized as a transforming service oriented to a business-oriented architecture, improving accuracy, and expanding the spatial range and target disaster. Third, application architecture was redesigned based on gap analysis between the existing architecture and user's requirements. The results of the proposed redesign architecture are presented as the application system structure and description of the application function based on owner's point of view in the enterprise architecture. The results of this paper can be used to derive the application module design and provide a detailed description of the application module based on the designer's point of view. Further research focused on structuring the HW/SW architecture will be required for system implementation.
