  • About 50% of the population and 75% of the properties concentrate on the flood plain in Japan. The rivers have intimate relationship with our lives. Those conditions have been seen after modern river improvement projects that began about a century ago. The technology which was introduced from foreign countries was improved in conformity with geographical features and the climate condition of our nation, and has redeveloped as a Japanese original technology. In 1940's, Japan had serious natural disasters that were caused by large- scale typhoons. Those typhoons wiped out everything completely. Even though the government realized the importance of flood control and management after those natural disasters, civil work still aimed to economic development. Those construction works have become the one of factors for concentrating population and degrading natural environment in urban areas. Deterioration of river environment has become serious issue in urban development and main cause of pollution. The approaches for environmental restorations which were started about 30 years ago aimed to harmonize with nature environment and cities and human lives. There have been going on many projects called 'river environmental improvement projects', the 'nature friendly river works' and 'natural restoration projects.' The society has tried to find a way to live in harmony with nature. As for societies symbiotic with habitats will form the safe country in the history and the spectacle. Such as the symbiotic of the river or the basin where discharge, water quality, nature, the history, landscape, the local society and also for culture were built in is achieved. Examples of working, applied to restoration technologies and the one to describe the mechanism construction are been shown in the paper. Furthermore, write for an international spread of the river technology of Japan to attempt.

  • This study aims to interpret the location of 4 traditional settlements in the Youngnam district of Korea in view of geomorphology. For this study, GIS techniques were used to analyse quantitatively the degree of slope, slope aspect and the relation with river/stream of these regions. Yugok is located on pediment in the valley basin. Cheonjeon is located in the end part of the hill. Hahoe is located on the convex natural levee of the flood plain. Yangdong is located on a hillside. Houses are mostly distributed with south, southeast, and southwest aspect, but in Hahoe face all sides. Also, the settlements are located on average $10{\sim}20m$ above river bed. This indicates a safe height above river bed for avoiding an flood damage. These results imply that the location of the traditional settlement is based on a scientific logic and rationale. It is thus argued that the settlements satisfy exellent geomorphic conditions from the perspective of modern theories of residential location.

  • This study aims at analysis and application of PMP(Probable Maximum Precipitation) for the determination of design of major hydraulic structures. PMP was estimated by hydro-meteorolgical method and envelope curve method. PMF(Probable Maximum Flood) was then estimated from this PMP by synthetic unit hydrograph method and chow method. From the comparison of three methods for PMP estimation of magnitude of PMP in order of statistical, hydro-meteorlogical, envelope curve method. Amon PMP results estimated by each method it is believed that the hydro-meteorological method gave the best proper value in comparison with historical maximum rainfall because of this method reflected upon all meteorological factor. From the comparison of PMP with probable rainfall and flood, it was shown that estimated value by statistical method and hydro-metelogical method were nearly equivalent to the value of return period 200 to 500 year. It was found that PMF estimated from would be more safe for the design of major hydraulic structures in the consinderation.

  • There are many water treatment plants built over couple of decade ago in Korea. For most of those plants, they are required a countermeasure to cope with the deterioration caused from the superannuated facilities and the objective materials change of water treatment from inorganic particles like clay to algae particles due to eutrophication of lake and reservoir. A series of field and laboratory experiments was performed to investigate the feasibility of DAF hybrid process and the variation of particle characteristics by applying the additional DAF unit in conventional water treatment processes. On the basis of this experiments, the DAF was effective as an additive process in filtration basin (DAF-CSF combination processes). Using DAF-CSF combination process, the efficiency of stable particle removal can be achieved to produce the safe drinking water.

  • In this study, chlorine modeling technique based on fuzzy system is proposed to reduce the carcinogenic substance and decide the optimal chlorine injection rate, which is affected by chlorine evaporation rate in sedimentation basin according to detention time, weather and water quality. The additional chlorine meter is installed in the inlet part of sedimentation to reduce the feedback time and implement cascade control, which leads to maintaining the residual chlorine concentration decided by fuzzy rule. It helps to take a preemptive action about long time delay, the characteristics of the disinfection process, and reduce the variation of residual chlorine rate by 7.3 times and the chlorine consumption by 40,000 dollars. It made a significant contribution to supply hygienically safe drinking water.

  • FPSO model tests of mooring line failure were carried out in the ocean basin at KRISO. The characteristics of the motions and mooring lines were investigated. The FPSO ship was moored using an internal turret and catenary mooring. The test model was 1/60 scale. The mooring lines were designed to satisfy the characteristics of the original mooring lines using the truncation method. The experiments were conducted under various environments: a safe wave, current and wind condition; single broken mooring line condition; and transient mode condition. The moment of the break was determined based on experimental test results. The results showed that the FPSO behavior and mooring line tensions were acceptable under the failure condition.

  • This study is to observe the effects of nursing care according to change of position for comfort during labor and safe delivery of newborn infants and perturbment women. Fifty antepartal primipara with labor pain who were admitted to the delivery room of H University Medical Center from September 1, 1976 to November 15, 1976 (Estimate Delivery Confinement) were selected for this investigation. Among the 50 parturiencys, the experimental group (28 primipara) were placed in 30 degree upright sitting position and the control group (22 primipara) were placed in the supine position. following placement, both groups were observed. The summarized findings of the study were as follows; 1. There was a noticeably significant difference in the duration of the first stage of labor (defined as 4 cm. dilatation of the cervical os with the fetal presenting part engaged to full or 10 cm. dilatation) , between the two groups. For women in the 30 degree upright sitting position, the first stage of labor was close to 33.66 minutes shorter. than for the women in the supine position. (t : 32.79, D.F : 48, p<0.0,i) 2. Although slight differences were observed between the Apgar Scores of the newborn infants of primipara in the two groups, these were not significant. The mean Apgar Score among the newborn infants of primipara in the 30 degree upright sitting position was 9.64 compared with 9.04 for the newborn infants of primipara in the supine position, a difference of 0.6. (x$^2$= 2.44, D.F : 2, p〉0.05) 3. There was a significant difference in the conformability of the perturbment women between the two groups because the shortened duration of the first stage and the high level of comfort score calculated for six factors (body activity, serving bed pan, serving kidney basin, pushing, deep breathing and perturbment women's feelings), that affect nursing care.

  • Efforts to employ smart home sensors to monitor the indoor activities of elderly single residents have been made to assess the feasibility of a safe and healthy lifestyle. However, the bathroom remains an area of blind spot. In this study, we have developed and evaluated a new edge computer device that can automatically detect water usage activities in the bathroom and record the activity log on a cloud server. Three kinds of sound as flushing, showering, and washing using wash basin generated during water usage were recorded and cut into 1-second scenes. These sound clips were then converted into a 2-dimensional image using MEL-spectrogram. Sound data augmentation techniques were adopted to obtain better learning effect from smaller number of data sets. These techniques, some of which are applied in time domain and others in frequency domain, increased the number of training data set by 30 times. A deep learning model, called CRNN, combining Convolutional Neural Network and Recurrent Neural Network was employed. The edge device was implemented using Raspberry Pi 4 and was equipped with a condenser microphone and amplifier to run the pre-trained model in real-time. The detected activities were recorded as text-based activity logs on a Firebase server. Performance was evaluated in two bathrooms for the three water usage activities, resulting in an accuracy of 96.1% and 88.2%, and F1 Score of 96.1% and 87.8%, respectively. Most of the classification errors were observed in the water sound from washing. In conclusion, this system demonstrates the potential for use in recording the activities as a lifelog of elderly single residents to a cloud server over the long-term.

  • If there is no choice but to be urbanized, we should examine how human interference has had influences on the area to keep the river environment safe and stable. This study is aimed at finding improvement by examining the effect of human interference in Gapcheon river in Daejeon, which is developing fast. Distinctive features of human interference in Gapcheon river are followings. First, middle and upper reaches of Gapcheon river are being maintained and restored focusing on flood control but are scheduled to develop city and channel. Second, the rear area of middle and lower reaches of Gapcheon river is already developed into an urban district and solidified into artificial stream for leisure activities installing the artificial structure for fun. Third, lower reaches of Gapcheon river are in an unstable condition because of straightening waterway and developing rear area of river. Up to now, geographical features and bio-diversity of Gapcheon river has been ruined by the artificial management of river centered for technical engineering. From now on, followings should be considered for management of urban river. First, it is focused on maintaining eco system by itself than usage for human. Second, natural features of rear area of river should be taken into consideration and should be preserved before developing urban city and hills, back marsh, channel deposit and swamp to directly have an influence on river.

  • Recently, the overseas construction market has been actively promoted for about 10 years, and overseas dam construction has been continuously performed. For the economic and safe construction of the dam, it is important to prepare the main dam construction plan considering the design frequency of the diversion tunnel and the cofferdam. In this respect, the prediction of river level during the rainy season is significant. Since most of the overseas dam construction sites are located in areas with poor infrastructure, the most efficient and economic method to predict the water level in dam construction is to use the upstream water level. In this study, a linear regression model, which is one of the simplest statistical methods, was proposed and examined to predict the downstream level from the upstream level. The Pyeongchang River basin, which has the characteristics of the upper stream (mountain stream), was selected as the target site and the observed water level in Pyeongchang and Panwoon gaging station were used. A regression equation was developed using the water level data set from August 22th to 27th, 2017, and its applicability was tested using the water level data set from August 28th to September 1st, 2018. The dependent variable was selected as the "level difference between two stations," and the independent variable was selected as "the level of water level in Pyeongchang station two hours ago" and the "water level change rate in Pyeongchang station (m/hr)". In addition, the accuracy of the developed equation was checked by using the regression statistics of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Adjusted Coefficient of Determination (ACD), and Nach Sutcliffe efficiency Coefficient (NSEC). As a result, the statistical value of the linear regression model was very high, so the downstream water level prediction using the upstream water level was examined in a highly reliable way. In addition, the results of the application of the water level change rate (m/hr) to the regression equation show that although the increase of the statistical value is not large, it is effective to reduce the water level error in the rapid level rise section. Accordingly, this is a significant advantage in estimating the evacuation water level during main dam construction to secure safety in construction site.
