Monitoring of heavy metals, bisphenol A and phenol migrated from food packages for delivery

  • Food delivery is gaining popularity due to changes in lifestyle and dietary patterns. However, packages used to delivery food may contain contaminants including heavy metals, or additives added during manufacturing process which may migrate into food during processing and transportation. In this study, a total of 58 food packages for delivery were collected and tested for migration of heavy metals (lead, cadmium and arsenic), bisphenol A and phenol into food simulants. The method was validated by evaluating linearity of calibration curve, limit of detection, limit of quantification, recovery and precision. Result of heavy metal migration showed that lead was the most frequently migrated metal and the highest concentration was detected in a polypropylene sample. Although there are no specific migration limits for bisphenol A and phenol in packaging materials tested in this study, migrations of bisphenol A and phenol were detected in some packages. This may due to contamination or additives added during manufacture of packages. Risk (%) was calculated to analyze the risk associated with the migration of heavy metals, bisphenol A and phenol, and was always below 1 %. These results showed that food packages for delivery are safe in terms of heavy metals, bisphenol A and phenol migration.

Running safety of metro train over a high-pier bridge subjected to fluctuating crosswind in mountain city

  • Due to the rugged terrain, metro lines in mountain city across numerous wide rivers and deep valleys, resulting in instability of high-pier bridge and insecurity of metro train subjected to fluctuating crosswind. To ensure the safe operation in metro lines in mountain cities, running safety of the metro train over the high-pier bridge under crosswind is analyzed in this paper. Firstly, the dynamic model of the wind-train-bridge (WTB) system is built, in which the speed-up effect of crosswind is fully considered. On the basis of time domain analysis, the basic characteristics of the WTB system with high-pier are analyzed. Afterwards, the dynamic responses varies with train speed and wind speed are calculated, and the safety zone of metro train over a high-pier bridge subjected to fluctuating crosswind in mountain city is determined. The results indicate that, fluctuating crosswind triggers drastic vibration to the metro train and high-pier bridges, which in turn causes running instability of the train. For this reason, the corresponding safety zone for metro train running on the high-pier is proposed, and the metro traffic on the high-pier bridge should be closed as the mean wind speed of standard height reaches 9 m/s (15.6 m/s for the train).

Lesson for New Urbanism from the Traditional Space in East Asia

  • Industrialization has accelerated the expansion of mobility to the urban areas, land use for function of residence and consumption. With the urbanization, the management and distribution of the physical space of the city and rational design have also become major issues. Rapid and widespread urbanization has consistently accumulated problems of natural, physical, environmental, and psychological circumstances, and most of urban areas have begun to focus on restoring an efficient, safe and healthy urban environment to improve of the quality of life since the latter half of the 20th century, New-Urbanism is a new urban development paradigm that resembles the practical implications of a shared economy for social, economic and environmental cost reduction.. The geographical significance of the sharing city's concept of the alleys is to revitalize sustainable cities while restoring the attractive elements of the city. This study examines the lessons of New-Urbanism in those traditional urban space comparing with each East Asia's cities such as golmok (alley or backlane) in Seoul, Huton in Beijing, Lilong in Shanghai, and Roji in Japan. This study diagnoses whether main principals of New-Urbanism such as development of good community and walkable pedestrian route, restoration of regional identity and sense of the place, and mitigation of climate change strategy can be practiced in the community of alley as well.

Neuromodulation of the median nerve in carpal tunnel syndrome, a single-blind, randomized controlled study

  • Background: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of pulsed radiofrequency applied using transcutaneous electrodes in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Methods: After randomization, the patients received two cycles of noninvasive pulsed radiofrequency (NiPRF), once weekly, or splinting (the control group) for three months. Clinical evaluations were recorded at baseline and weeks 4 and 8. The Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire (BCTQ) was used to determine the functional status and symptom severity. Results: Sixty-two patients were followed up for three months. There was no difference between the groups in the BCTQ scores before and after treatment. The NiPRF group found a significant difference between the BCTQ measurements at all time intervals (paired sample t-test; P < 0.001). In the splint group, there was a significant difference only between the basal-1st month and basal-3rd month (paired samples t-test; P < 0.001). The main effect of the time variable was statistically significant (ANOVA; P < 0.001), but the group variable was not. There was no correlation between the BCTQ results measured at any time and the electroneuromyelogragphy findings in either group. Conclusions: NiPRF effectively improves symptoms and functionality in patients with CTS for up to 3 months. Thus, NiPRF can be considered an easy, safe, and useful alternative treatment modality for CTS.

시내버스 준공영제 시행에 따른 시내버스 운전자의 운전태도 변화에 근거한 교통사고 저감대책 방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Measures on the Decrease of the Traffic Accidents Based on the Attitude Changes of Intra-City Bus Drivers Following the Implementation Semi-Public Management System of Intra-City Bus)

  • 본 연구는 부산광역시 시내버스 준공영제 시행에 따른 시내버스 교통사고 발생 유형 및 시내버스 운전자의 운전태도 변화 경향을 분석하고 이를 토대로 하여 교통사고 저감대책을 고찰한 바 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 시내버스 준공영제 시행 전 후와 시행 후 시간이 경과함에 따른 교통사고는 전반적으로 감소하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 시내버스 준공영제 시행 전 후 시내버스 운전자의 교통법규 위반과 교통사고 감소에 가장 많은 영향을 끼친 요인으로는 안전운전 의무 불이행 위반 감소와 고용 안정으로 나타났다. 셋째, PROXSCAL 분석 결과에 따른 교통사고 저감대책을 마련, 제시할 수 있었다.

시민보호를 위한 생활안전 마을지도 설계에 관한 연구 (A study on the Safe-Life Village Design for the Citizen Security)

  • 본 연구에서는 시민의 안전을 확보하고, 이를 통한 지역경제 활성화에 기여하며, 시민의 복지환경인 안전복지와 사회복지 환경을 개선 등을 이루기 위하여 마을의 안전을 확보하기 위한 시범마을로 서울시 서대문구 북가좌2동을 선정하고, 이 마을에서 2011년부터 사건사고와 재해재난 등이 발생할 수 있는 요인인 차도, 인도, 학교내, 놀이터, 공연장, 휴식장소, 건축물 등 다양한 사회적 변화 시설물에 대한 위험요인을 발굴하고 이를 개선한 내용을 재해경감 교육과 훈련 목적으로 한 곳에 정리하여 생활안전 마을지도를 설계하였다. 3년간 지속적으로 안전모니터링에 의하여 위험요소 발굴 및 개선활동을 한 결과, 2011년부터 마을의 사망자가 2010년 시민 34,000여 명 중 151명 사망자에서 128명으로 23명이 감소하였으며, 이는 한국의 평균 사건사고 사망자 비율인 12.8%인 인구대비 18명으로부터 5명이 더 추가로 감소되었다. 재해에 강한 도시를 만들고, 안전모델 마을을 방문하기 원하는 사람들을 돕기 위하여 탐방로지도와 10대 생활안전 요인들을 제시하였다.

스마트 안전도시 조성을 위한 도로망 특성과 범죄발생 멀티에이전트(Multi-Agent) 시뮬레이션 (Road Networks and Crime Occurrence Multi-Agent Simulation for Smart Safe City)

  • 본 연구는 범죄로부터 안전한 생활환경 조성을 위해 도로망의 형태도 범죄발생에 영향을 미칠 것이라는 가정하에 공간구문론(Space Syntax)을 활용하여 사례지역을 대상으로 실증 분석하였다. 즉 도로별로 통합도, 통제도, 연결도를 공간구문론으로 계산하고, 각 도로별 실제 범죄발생 건수와 상관성을 분석하였다. 다음으로 분석결과를 일반화할 수 있는지를 확인하기 위해 멀티에이전트모형(Multi-Agent Model)을 개발하여 컴퓨터상의 가상공간에서 시나리오를 설정하고 시뮬레이션 하였다. 그 결과 도로망의 통합도가 범죄발생과 가장 연관성이 높은 것으로 분석되었으며, 가상공간 시뮬레이션 결과에도 통합도가 가장 영향을 많이 주는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 멀티에이전트 시뮬레이션에서 실험공간 규모나 에이전트 행동의 프로그래밍에 한계가 있었지만 현실 데이터와 가상공간 시뮬레이션에 의해 도로망 체계와 범죄발생간의 관계를 규명하였다는데 의의가 있다. 또한 본 연구에서 개발된 시뮬레이션 플랫폼은 다양한 실험이 가능하므로 경찰력이나 방범시설의 배치 등 보다 현실적인 문제에 대한 해결방안 모색과 스마트 안전도시를 앞당기는데 기여할 것이다.

시내버스 이용자의 서비스만족 영향요인에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Factors Affecting to Service Satisfaction of Intra-city Bus Users)

  • 부산시는 2007년 시내버스 준공영제 시행 이후 버스 서비스 향상을 통한 이용활성화를 도모하고자 노력하고 있다. 이를 위해 시내버스 이용자를 대상으로 서비스 만족에 영향을 미치는 주된 요인을 살펴보고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 시내버스 서비스 20개 항목을 기본적 서비스, 안전운행, 노선정보, 쾌적도, 청결도 및 편의시설의 상위 6개 영향요인으로 구분하고, 각 세부 서비스에 대한 선호의식을 분석하였다. 그리고 시내버스 이용자의 일반적 특성(성별, 연령), 교통 행동(이용횟수, 탑승시간)과 교통환경(기온, 강수)에 따른 다양한 조건에서의 버스 서비스 만족 영향을 도출하였다. 이 연구결과는 기후변화에 대비하는 버스 정책과 버스 이용활성화를 위한 운영계획 수립 시 중요한 의사결정 기초자료로 활용될 것이다.

지방중소도시 활성화를 위한 공공영역 환경 개선방안 연구 -경상남도 거창군을 대상으로- (A Study on the Improvement of the Public Environment for Activation in Local Small or Medium-sized City -Focused on the Geochang-Gun, Gyeongnam Province-)

  • Recently, the central and local government support various improvement projects on existing public buildings and areas. Improving public use and environment of these areas is adequate because financial condition of local city is not enough to build new infrastructures. As one of the projects, Geochang-Eup(Geochang-Gun, Gyeongnam Province) is selected as the project site since most of the public buildings and areas of the city are located close each other in downtown but not streamlined in function and use nor easily accessible. The purpose of this study is to analyze the causes of decline in local city and to present strategies to vitalize the city through improving environment of public areas. And we analyzed the problems by discussion with local officer, field investigation on the site and paper survey. The analysis shows that public infrastructures are grouped by function: administration, education, life support, culture, health, etc, but not well-connected, easily accessible, adequately located, various in use nor enough in quantity. This study summarized the problems into five categories: Access&Linkage, Safe&Comfort, Identity&Image, Usage&Activity and Ownership&Management and proposes strategy in three phases. The first phase is to improve functions and design of public places per each area: more consistent design on public buildings, better civil facilities and better accessibility to public areas. The second is to vitalize of the areas and to improve efficiency in use through linking each other physically and sharing uses. The third is to encourage citizen's participation and by developing civil programs to streamline public areas each other.

Interoperative Radiotherapy of Seventy-two Cases of Early Breast Cancer Patients During Breast-conserving Surgery

  • Objective: To evaluate interoperative radiotherapy after breast conservative surgery in early breast cancer patients in terms of postoperative complications, cosmetic outcome and recurrence events. Methods: From June 2007 to Dec 2011, 143 early breast cancer patients received breast conservative surgery. Seventy-two (study group) received interoperative radiotherapy, compared with 71 patients (control group) given routine radiotherapy. Postoperative complications were evaluated 1 month after surgery; cosmetic outcome was evaluated 1 year postoperatively; recurrence and death events were followed up. Results: The average wound healing time was 13~22 d in the study group and 9~14 d in the control group. In the study group, 2 patients developed lyponecrosis, 16 patients showed wound edema while no such side effects were found in the control group. No infection or hematomas were found in either group. In the study group (59 cases), overall cosmetic outcome in 53 patients was graded as excellent or good, and in 6 as fair or poor. Meanwhile in the control group (56 cases), 42 patients were graded as excellent or good, and 14 as fair or poor (P=0.032). After a follow-up from 3 to 54 months (median: 32 months), two patients (2.78%) in study group developed local relapses, one of them (1.39%) died, 2 patients (2.78%) developed bone metastases. In control group, one patient (1.41%) developed local relapse, 2 patients (2.82%) developed bone metastases, and no one died. Conclusion: Intraoperative radiotherapy is safe and reliable with good cosmetic outcome.
