Occurrence of scarabs at sweet persimmon (Diospyros kaki var. Fuyu) orchards was investigated by mercury light traps every one week interval in several areas in Gyeongnam province including, Jinju, Sacheon, Sancheong, and Gimhae, from April to September in 2000 and 2001. In addition, damage of persimmon by scarabs was observed every ten days interval at three orchards in Jinju and at one in Gimhae from late May to late October. Although sixteen species of 12 genera were attracted to the traps, species and number of catches were different according to orchards and years. Holotrichia morosa was most dominant in Jinju, Sacheon, and Sancheong. Total number of scarabs attracted to the traps was highest at the orchard surrounded by chestnut orchards in Sancheong. Fruits of sweet persimmon were not damaged by scarabs at the studied orchards. However, leaves and calyxes were slightly damaged by Adoretus tenuimaculatus. Maximum average numbers of the damaged leaves and calyxes throughout the year by A. tenuimaculatus were 0.33 leaves from 10 new shoots and 0.07 calyxes from 15 fruits. Gametis jucunda and Popillia mutans damaged flowers and calyxes. Maximum average numbers of damaged flowers and calyxes by these 2 species were the same as 0.03 from 15 flowers and 15 calyxes, respectively. These levels of damage suggest that the scarabs are not economically injurious to sweet persimmon fruits in Korea.

The freshwater lakes located at the fringe of urban cities are a habitat for diverse organisms. However, they are facing severe danger of environment deterioration and water pollution caused by reckless development of the area. In this study, an ecological management plan was suggested to promote the biodiversity through appointing management area based on the research and analysis data of flora and fauna as well as maintain biodiversity and harmonize utilization of freshwater lakes such as Duryang Reservoir at Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do. Base on the data of ecological research and analysis, this study conducted research on biotope assessment, wild life habitat assessment and presence of protected species. As a result, the ecosystem conservation area including multi-layer structured natural forests, waterside and wetland that are home to various species and the edge area with high habitat diversity were recognized as highly preservable regions. Management areas were ecologically disturbed region, highly polluted commercial district and damaged waterside caused by fishing. Proactive management must be implemented through vegetation management such as vegetation transition and shrub planting as well as establishing pollutant management system. The deterioration of waterside and forest vegetation of freshwater lake has a direct influence on biodiversity and water quality. Therefore, the conservation area and development area should be totally separated from each other, and the development area must be restored and managed strictly.
Agamermis unka, a mermithid parasite of brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, is the most important natural enemy of BPH and white-backed planthopper (WBPH), Sogatella furcifera in Korea. Distribution of A. unka was investigated in Korean rice fields from 1992 to 1998 and in 2001. Overwintering population of A. unka in Gosung, Namhae, and Tongyoung from 1992 to 1998 was different depending on locality and year. In the survey of A. tanka distribution in the spring of 2001, A. unka was found only at Jangheung and Haenam in Jeonnam province and Namhae, Jinju, Sancheong, Sacheon, Gosung, Tongyoung, Uiryeong, Changwon, Gimhae, and the experimental field of Gyeongsangnamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services at Jinju in Gyeongnam province out of 30 observed regions in 5 provinces. The number of A. unka was 1,045/㎥ at Namhae, 947/㎥ at the experimental field of Gyeongsangnamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services, and 395/㎥ at Gosung. Density of A. unka at the rice paddies of Gyeongnam province after harvest in 2001 was higher at the rice fields of Namhae, Gosung, and the experimental field of Gyeongsangnamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services. Although density of A. unka was higher in the pesticide-untreated plots than fungicide-treated or insecticide-treated plots of forecasting paddies, there were no significant differences. After rice harvest A. unka was found from the forecasting paddies of Gosung, Jinju, Namhae and Sacheon out of 19 observed localities in Gyeongnam province.

Bacterial canker caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) occurred at 202 kiwifruit orchards for the survey period of 2013-2016, of which Psa biovar 2 (Psa2) and Psa biovar 3 (Psa3) were detected at 73 and 129 kiwifruit orchards, respectively. The number of kiwifruit orchards infected by Psa3 in 2016 increased nearly two times compared to 2015. Psa3 was detected from all the kiwifruit cultivars except some kiwiberry cultivars growing in Korea. Yellow-fleshed cultivars Hort16A and Jecy-gold and red-fleshed cultivar Hongyang were highly susceptible to Psa3. Our epidemiological and random amplification of polymorphic DNA analyses indicated that the first Psa3 incidence on Hongyang orchard in Sacheon, Gyoungnam might result from an introduction of Psa3-contaminated pollens from China for artificial pollination in 2014 and recent outbreaks of Psa3 in Sacheon and Goseong, Gyoungnam in 2016 might be due to rapid spread of bacterial canker by secondary infection of Psa3 from Hongyang orchard to neighboring Jecy-gold and Hayward orchards.

A new virus-like disease of tomato showing chlorotic spots, malformation and necrosis on leaves, and chlorotic blotching, rings, and necrosis on fruits was observed around Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea in 2004. Host range analysis could not differentiate 4 field isolates collected from tomatoes showing different symptoms but identified them as Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV). TBSV-tsf2 isolate induced symptoms in indicator plants similar to those caused by the TBSV-C, -S and -Nf. As the isolate could not systemically infect Chenopodium quinoa, the isolate might belong to the previously described TBSV-S isolate. TBSV-tsf2 isolate caused similar cytological alterations that were similar to that generally caused by previously reported TBSV isolates. TBSV-tsf2 isolate, however, could be considered to belong to new strain of TBSV because masses of small electron-dense patches that were not observed from the previously described TBSV. The complete nucleotide sequences of the genomic RNA of 4739 nt excluding non-translated sequences at both termini have been determined and compared to sequences of other TBSV strains. The complete nucleotide sequence identity among TBSV isolates was 98.9% to 99.7%, and to the other tombusviruses ranged from 80.8% to 94.9%. Comparison of the amino acid sequences all five ORFs with those of other TBSV strains shows a similar genomic organization, and high percentage of amino acid sequence homology with TBSV-Nf than TBSV-S isolate. Since the TBSV symptoms were only observed in Sacheon fields where imported seeds from Japan were planted, the TBSV incidence probably caused by the planting contaminated tomato seeds and thus require more through quarantine procedure to prevent settlement of TBSV in Korea. Altogether, these results support that the Korean isolate of TBSV infecting tomato might be new strain.
This study was carried out to identify the ecological characters easily changeable with the conditions of temperature and day-length and to ascertain the managable means which can optimize the barley plants to secure the maximae yield and early heading under controlled condition. Yield and yield components were greatly varied with temperature. Especially, effective tiller formation and grain filling of sub-tillers were more favorably affected by thermal treatment than those of main tiller. In thermic response, 'Kangbori' was less susceptible than others, while 'Sacheon #6' showed particular susceptability. The varietal differences of photoperiodic response were recognized on all investigated traits and their degree of response were similar to those with temperature. Among varieties, 'Kangbori' was comparably sensitive on several characters while 'Sacheon #6' displaying low light-sensitivity. The turning point at which heading might be radically stimulated was estimated as about 10.5 hour day-length in 3 tested varieties and above 18 hours of irradiance was considered ineffective for more rapid heading. The condition under which barley varieties may obtain maximal yield and resonably early heading was 15$^{\circ}C$ in temperature and 12 to 15 hours of day-length, regardless of varieties. of day-length, regardless of varieties.

In this study, we have estimated the storm surge heights using numerical modeling on coastal area, and then evaluated the vulnerability index by applying the vulnerability assessment techniques. Surge modelling for 27 typhoons affected from 2000 to 2014 were simulated by applying the ADCIRC model. The results of validation and verification was in significant agreement as compared with observations for the top 6 ranking typhoons affected. As results, the storm surge heights in Jinhae Bay, Sacheon Bay, Gwangyang Bay, Cheonsu Bay and Gyeonggi Bay were higher than other inner coastal areas, then storm surge vulnerability assessment was performed using a standardization, normalization and gradation of storm surge heights. According to results of storm surge vulnerability assessment, index of Jinhae Bay, Sacheon Bay, Gwangyang Bay etc. are estimated to be vulnerable(4~5) because of the characteristics of storm surge such as inner bay are vulnerable compared with exposed to the open sea areas. However, index in the inner bay of western Jeonnam are not vulnerable(1~3) relatively. It may not appear the typhoons affected significantly for the past 15 years. So, the long-term vulnerability assessment with the sensitivity of geomorphology are necessary to reduce the uncertainty.

The purpose of the study is to enhance the teaching competence for pre-service elementary teacher by using DGE in order to enhance SMK and PCK for them. To do this, we investigated the initial SMK and PCK for 23 pre-service elementary teachers, the reality of implementation activity of DGE and the change of SMK and PCK after quest activity by DGE. As results, 3 pre-service elementary teachers made errors which are misunderstanding a general angle as special angle, an excessive jump of logic and a circulation logic in the aspect of an initial SMK. In the aspect of contents of PCK, most of pre-service elementary teachers proposed teaching focused on the character using in the problem solving. And most of pre-service elementary teachers proposed teaching methods which are based on explanation, measurement and material manipulation. The reality of implementation activity of DGE was classified 4 cases which are a difficulty in understanding the concept of dynamics and embodying in DGE, an obsession about construction of $75^{\circ}$ and generalization, a difficulty in interpreting 'folding activity' mathematically and a good implementation activity. After quest activity by DGE, the case which is misunderstanding a general angle as special angle could be improved, but the others are not. And after quest activity by DGE, most of pre-service elementary teachers still proposed teaching focused on the character using in the problem solving in the aspect of contents of PCK, and some of pre-service elementary teachers added only teaching methods which are involving visual confirmation by GSP. From these results, we could extract some pedagogical implications helping pre-service teachers to reinforce SMK and PCK by DGE.

The study was conducted to investigate the correlation analysis between fruit quality and climatic parameters in grapevines. 'Campbell Early', one of the major grape cultivars, occupies more than 70% of cultivated areas in Korea. Recent research results have shown that the movement of cultivation area of fruit production resulted from the temperature increase. In this study, we investigated the relationship between fruit quality and climatic conditions in 13 major 'Campbell Early' grape producing areas (i.e., Sacheon, Jinju, Naju, Dangjin, Cheonan, Gimcheon, Yeongdong, Okcheon, Sangju, Suwon, Yeongju, Gangneung, Chuncheon, and Yanggu). The earliest and latest full blooming days of grapevines were ovserved on May 25 in Sacheon area and on June 7 in Yanggu area, respectively. At least 90 days are required for grapes to mature enough for the production of highquality fruits. The southern areas with less than 90 days of maturity period had difficulty in the production of good fruit. However, the areas with longer maturity period of 100 to 110 days produced grapes with with high sugar content and good coloring. The fruit qualities of 'Campbell Early' grapes are more closely related with temperature than other climatic factors. High temperature resulted in fruits with high acidity and delayed the coloration of the fruit skin in the southern area. The fruit skin was thin in the southern area and inclined to be thicker in the northern areas. Therefore, grape should be cultivated in regions with long maturity period to have high quality.
More than 3,000 landslides were occurred by torrential rains in Gangneung area due to the typhoon Rusa in 2002. In order to analyze the landslide origin and its geometric characteristics, 1,365 landslide data were collected from the field survey of Sacheon, Jumunjin, and Yeongok areas in which the intensive landslides took place. The average landslide size in the study area was composed of 10m width, 30m length, and $21^{\circ}{\sim}35^{\circ}$ slope angle, and the plane view of landslides A-type (i.e. wide shape of lower part) that contains approximately 50.5% of the landslides commonly occurred. In particular the area of Sacheon heavily damaged by mountain fires had more occurrence of landslides than other areas. The landslides of uniform tendency of slope direction were examined resulted from the contribution of topographic characteristics due to the weathering and wind direction during heavy rainfalls. In order to analyze the direction of joint, 249 orientation data were collected from the study area. The window method was employed to determine the characteristics of joint density in 51 locations of the study area. The results showed that many landslides occurred in the areas of joint density with the range of $0.05{\sim}0.1$.
