Objectives : Saam acupuncture is one of the indigenous therapeutic modalities in traditional Korean medicine. In this study, the neuroprotective effect of Saam acupuncture of kidney tonification was investigated using 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated mice. Methods : Twelve-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were intraperitoneally administered with 30 mg/kg of MPTP at 24-h intervals for 5 days and acupuncture stimulation at LU8, KI7, SP3 and KI3 was performed once a day for 12 days from the first MPTP injection. The pole test and the rotarod test were performed to evaluate motor function, and dopaminergic neuronal survival in the substantia nigra (SN) and striatum was evaluated using tyrosine-hydroxylase immunohistochemistry. Results : MPTP administration caused behavioral impairment and dopaminergic neuronal death in the nigrostriatal pathway. Whereas the Saam acupuncture treatment alleviated the MPTP-induced motor dysfunction and dopaminergic neuronal death in the SN and striatum. Conclusions : Saam acupuncture of kidney tonification can alleviate the MPTP-induced motor dysfunction and dopaminergic neuronal death in the nigrostriatal pathway, suggesting a possible role for acupuncture in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Objectives : Saam acupuncture initiated by Saamdoin is traditional and originative method, which is characterized by applying the five phases theory and mother-child reinforcement-reduction principle to the selection of acupoints and needling manipulation. Our study was aimed to summarize and assess the use of acupoint SP3(Taebaek) in Saam acupuncture treatment and to further understand Saam acupuncture in an aspect of the combination of acupoints. Methods : We searched the data based on "(Do Hae Kyo Kam) Sa-Ahm's acupuncture method" for SP3 used and acupoint combination including SP3. We performed frequency analysis, network analysis, and cluster analysis for quantitative aspect. To understand clinical implication of SP3 with another acupoint, qualitative and descriptive methods were also carried out. Results and Conclusions : In our study, SP3 was frequently used for tonification of lung, spleen, heart, and kidney meridian and sedation of kidney, heart, and lung meridian. For this, many acupoints such as LU8, LU9, KI3, HT8, KI7, LU10 and LR1 were used with SP3. The combination of SP3 and other acupoints were used to treat stroke, common cold, and pain conditions including headache, low back pain, respiratory disease as well as gastroenteric troubles including stomachache, indigestion, vomiting, and constipation. To further understand Saam acupuncture, an understanding of the five transport points based on five elements characters, pathological changes (deficiency and excess) of viscera and bowels, and concept of source point should be preceded.

Oral leukoplakia is the most common premalignant lesion of the oral mucosa. This case report presents the effect of acupuncture on Oral leukoplakia. The 67 years old male patient who has suffered for 2 years was treated with Right side Saam acupucture Damjeonggyeok(BL66, GB43, LI1, GB44) without other treatment. Acupuncture was performed for 15 minutes. The effect of acupuncture was evaluated as photographic change and visual analog scale(VAS) of subjective symptoms in oral cavity. After 87th acupunture treatment during 226 days, Leukoplakias were decreased at the right side of ventral tongue and the left border of the tongue and the lower lip. Furthermore, ulcer, erosion at the left border of the tongue were disappeared and VAS of Burning pain in the tongue decreased from 8 to 2. Although acupuncture is unusual treatment for Oral Leukoplakia, this case report suggested the effectiveness of using Damjeonggyeok on Oral Leukoplakia according to Saam acupuncture method.

Objectives : This study is to report one case of the patient who has exotropia caused by unilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia due to pontine infarction, which is a rare disease so there has few research about the effect of acupuncture therapy on it, treated with the SAAM(舍巖) Acupuncture Sojangjeonggyeok(小湯正洛) Methods & Results : In the point of differentiation of Syndrome, these subjects were diagnosed as deficiency of Yin and blood(陰血不足). We treated her with SAAM Acupuncture Sojangjeonggyeok(小湯正洛), herb medication(淸肝湯, 六味地黃湯), and the symptoms were resolved clearly by above treatment during about a week. Conclusion : This case shows proper oriental medical treatment based on the exact differentiation of symptoms has good effect on this disease as one of conservative therapies.

Objectives : This study was aimed to investigate current status researches and to provide source in setting development strategy on Liver-tonification acupuncture(LTA) and Liver-sedation acupuncture(LSA). Methods : We searched databases of Pubmed, KISS, OASIS, Google scholar and CNKI up to February 2017. We included articles that using LTA or LSA as main treatment, using the partial acupoints combination of LTA or LSA, or using each acupoint of LTA or LSA. We analyzed disease, details of acupuncture and control treatment and clinical outcomes from included studies. Results and Conclusions : Among the included clinical studies, case report was the most used methodology. LTA used to treat obesity, myopia, bartholinitis, tinnitus, hiccup and sleep disorder, prostate cancer and tremor. LSA used to treat panic disorder, gastroesophageal reflux disease and irritable bowl syndrome, herpes zoster and neuralgia. Obesity and tremor were the most studied diseases using LTA or LSA. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis was the only disease which LTA or LSA have no therapeutic effect. Each acupoints was not used as a meaning of Saam acupuncture but as affiliated meridian acupoint. Since animal researches were not fully conducted, mechanism of LTA and LSA was hard to be proved. Thus, more clinical studies and basic animal research are needed.

Saam acupuncture has an evident principles of prescription based on acupuncture tonification and purgation of Nan-gyeong but many prescriptions of Saam acupuncture are not typical patterns. Therefore it is difficult to understand principles of those prescriptions. Understanding the principles of any prescription means understanding the physiology and pathology of that prescription and it have an important role in selecting the best prescription and taking the most effective treatment. This paper studies principles of prescriptions of the king fire and the premier fire. The theoretical authorities of analysis are Nan-gyeong, works of Joo dan-gye and Li dong-won and Uihakimmun. The damage of fire to mentality is very intensive and severe. The prescriptions of the king fire and premier fire have a good effect on diseases by fire. The fire of human body are two types, the king fire and the premier fire but the water of human body is only one and then inferior to fire. The fire superior to the water is unstable and the fire influences rapidly and intensively on four elements, wood, earth, metal, water. So the control of the water is the key to treat the disease by fire. Considering the attack and the treatment of disease, heart and liver are attacked with a disease by fire in its early stage and kidney and lung are the key to treatment. Consequently the pathology of the disease by fire is corresponding to the theory- Yang Sufficient, Yin Deficient- of Joo dan-gye. It seems that the theory of Joo dan-gye influenced on the medical theory of Saam Acupuncture. On that account I believe that the study of medical theories of the Geum and Won Dynasty that various medical theories appeared is very available.

This case is to report the effect of renal function of chronic kidney disease(CKD) caused by IgA nephropathy. A 37-year-old man visited a Korean medicine hospital, who has been diagnosed with end stage renal disease(ESRD), 5 stage of CKD, caused by IgA nephropathy, has had no improvement of western medical treatment, and wanted to be treated using Korean medicine before renal transplantation. The decrease of creatinine value, the increase of glomerular filtration rate(GFR), and the decrease of CKD stage (5 to 4) was observed after combination treatment of Ikkigeonbiisuhwalhyeoltang and saam acupuncture was applied. This case report is suggested that combination treatment of acupuncture and herbal medicine could be effective to renal function of CKD in spite of a single case.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report clinical effect of oriental medical for a not improved ITP patient, who developed complication from DVT, after intravenous immunoglobulin treatment. Methods : The patient was treated using Saam acupuncture, herbal medication, moxibustion and physical treatment. And we measured of systemic symptoms and platelet counts. Results : After treatment, systemic symptoms and platelet counts were improved in case. Conclusions : Oriental medical treatment showed significant effect on ITP patient that not improved platelet counts after intravenous immunoglobulin treatment.

Objectives : This survey was accomplished to find out how Korean medical doctors take acupuncture prescriptions for knee osteoarthritis in real clinical practice. Methods : The survey questions were developed by the consensus from 4 professors and 10 residents who major in acupuncture & moxibustion for developing clinical trial protocol on individualized acupuncture treatment for knee osteoarthritis. The questionnaires were distributed via e-mail to 3,306 members of Korea Oriental Medical Association from March 15th to March 23rd in 2005.84 members completed answers, and the computerized data were analyzed by ISP statistical program. Results : 1. 68 out of 84 Korean medical doctors used pattern diagnosis. 2. 61 out of 84 Korean medical doctors used both local and remote points, 20 doctors remote points only, and 3 doctors local acupuncture points only. 3. In case of doctors who use remote acupuncture points only, the acupuncture prescription principle was Saam or five element acupuncture (66%), along the meridian pathway (14%), Eight constitutional acupuncture (11%), Taegeuk acupuncture (2%), and miscellaneous (18%). Conclusion : In our e-mail survey, Korean medical doctors who experienced more than 10 year practice answered that they use five element acupuncture or Saam acupuncture according to meridian pathway theory as the most common principle of their acupuncture treatment prescription.

Background : Eye diseases refer to a wide range of disconveniences from conjunctivitis, pterygium, glaucoma to even blindness. Acupuncture has been widely used in Korea throughout the history and provides an efficient method in the treatment of them. Objectives : Establish a distinctive and efficient acupuncture method for the treatment of eye diseases based in literature research. Method : We reviewed four Korean medical literature, "Guide to Swollen Sore Treatment[治腫指南]", "Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine[東醫寶鑑]", "Experiential Prescriptions of Acupuncture and Moxibustion[鍼灸經驗方]", and "Essential Rhymes on Acupuncture and Moxibustion by Master Saam[舍岩鍼法]", and analyzed the therapeutic characteristics in the treatment of eye diseases. Result : 1. According to "Guide to Swollen Sore Treatment[治腫指南]", various methods were applied in the treatment of eye diseases. We can cite salt water washing method after needling, pricking bloodletting method using three-edged needle, surgery method using bent needle and lance needle, or sore treatment using sliced bean-curd and ground Aristolochiae Fructus among others. Acupuncture points like GV20[百會], BL1[睛明], EX-HN5[太陽], GB20[風池], GV24[神庭], GB1[瞳子髎], and GB15[臨泣] were mostly needled. 2. In "Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine[東醫寶鑑]", pricking bloodletting method were most frequently used in comparison to single acupuncture or moxibustion methods. Applied points were GV20[百會], BL1[睛明], LI4[合谷], EX-HN5[太陽], GB37[光明], BL18[肝兪], GB20[風池], BL2[攢竹], GB1[瞳子髎], and ST36[三里]. Also selections of adjacent points were considered important. 3. In respect to treatment methods "Experiential Prescriptions of Acupuncture and Moxibustion [鍼灸經驗方]" has some similarity to "Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine[東醫寶鑑]" as pricking bloodletting method were mostly used. Also focused on normal Qi flow through meridian. Points like BL18[肝兪], BL1[睛明], LU5[尺澤], EX-HN5[太陽], LI4[合谷] were used. 4. "Essential Rhymes on Acupuncture and Moxibustion by Master Saam[校勘舍岩道人鍼法]" considered visceral pattern identification method fundamental in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. Specifically, Liver, Heart, Stomach, Lung, Kidney identification methods are presented. Combined both corresponding and connecting meridians supplementation and draining methods according to mother-child relation. Also Saam master's own experiential prescriptions are noted. Conclusions : After previous study on stroke, we could also find various efficient methods according to eye diseases, through literature research of korean medical classics. This study will concurrently result in establishing distinctive therapeutic method characteristic of Korea.
