Discriminative Power Feature Selection Method for Motor Imagery EEG Classification in Brain Computer Interface Systems

  • Motor imagery classification in electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) systems is an important research area. To simplify the complexity of the classification, selected power bands and electrode channels have been widely used to extract and select features from raw EEG signals, but there is still a loss in classification accuracy in the state-of- the-art approaches. To solve this problem, we propose a discriminative feature extraction algorithm based on power bands with principle component analysis (PCA). First, the raw EEG signals from the motor cortex area were filtered using a bandpass filter with ${\mu}$ and ${\beta}$ bands. This research considered the power bands within a 0.4 second epoch to select the optimal feature space region. Next, the total feature dimensions were reduced by PCA and transformed into a final feature vector set. The selected features were classified by applying a support vector machine (SVM). The proposed method was compared with a state-of-art power band feature and shown to improve classification accuracy.

  • This paper propose a framework for human body parts in RGB-D image. We conduct tasks of obtaining person area, finding candidate areas and local detection in order to detect hand, foot and head which have features of long accumulative geodesic distance. A person area is obtained with background subtraction and noise removal by using depth image which is robust to illumination change. Finding candidate areas performs construction of graph model which allows us to measure accumulative geodesic distance for the candidates. Instead of raw depth map, our approach constructs graph model with segmented regions by quadtree structure to improve searching time for the candidates. Local detection uses HOG based SVM for each parts, and head is detected for the first time. To minimize false detections for hand and foot parts, the candidates are classified with upper or lower body using the head position and properties of geodesic distance. Then, detect hand and foot with the local detectors. We evaluate our algorithm with datasets collected Kinect v2 sensor, and our approach shows good performance for head, hand and foot detection.

Optimal Hyper Analytic Wavelet Transform for Glaucoma Detection in Fundal Retinal Images

  • Glaucoma is one of the most common causes of blindness which is caused by increase of fluid pressure in the eye which damages the optic nerve and eventually causing vision loss. An automated technique to diagnose glaucoma disease can reduce the physicians’ effort in screening of Glaucoma in a person through the fundal retinal images. In this paper, optimal hyper analytic wavelet transform for Glaucoma detection technique from fundal retinal images is proposed. The optimal coefficients for transformation process are found out using the hybrid GSO-Cuckoo search algorithm. This technique consists of pre-processing module, optimal transformation module, feature extraction module and classification module. The implementation is carried out with MATLAB and the evaluation metrics employed are accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. Comparative analysis is carried out by comparing the hybrid GSO with the conventional GSO. The results reported in our paper show that the proposed technique has performed well and has achieved good evaluation metric values. Two 10- fold cross validated test runs are performed, yielding an average fitness of 91.13% and 96.2% accuracy with CGD-BPN (Conjugate Gradient Descent- Back Propagation Network) and Support Vector Machines (SVM) respectively. The techniques also gives high sensitivity and specificity values. The attained high evaluation metric values show the efficiency of detecting Glaucoma by the proposed technique.

  • This paper proposes a speed-sensorless induction motor control system using a rotor speed compensation. To explain the proposed system, this paper describes an induction motor model in the synchronous reference frame for the vector control. The rotor flux is estimated by the rotor flux observer using the reduced-dimensional state estimator technique. The estimated rotor speed is directly obtained from the electrical frequency, the slip frequency, and the rotor speed compensation with the estimated q-axis rotor flux. The error of the rotor time constant is indirectly reflected in the rotor speed compensation using the compensation of the flux error angle. To precisely estimate the rotor flux, the actual value of the stator resistance, whose actual variation is reflected, is derived. An implementation of pulse-width modulation (PWM) pulses using an effective space vector modulation (SVM) is briefly mentioned. For fast calculation and improved performance of the proposed algorithm, all control functions are implemented in software using a digital signal processor (DSP) with its environmental circuits. Also, it is shown through experimental results that the proposed system gives good performance for the speed-sensorless induction motor control.

Development of a sdms (Self-diagnostic monitoring system) with prognostics for a reciprocating pump system

  • In this paper, we consider a SDMS (Self-Diagnostic Monitoring System) for a reciprocating pump for the purpose of not only diagnosis but also prognosis. We have replaced a multi class estimator that selects only the most probable one with a multi label estimator such that we are able to see the state of each of the components. We have introduced a measure called certainty so that we are able to represent the symptom and its state. We have built a flow loop for a reciprocating pump system and presented some results. With these changes, we are not only able to detect both the dominant symptom as well as others but also to monitor how the degree of severity of each component changes. About the dominant ones, we found that the overall recognition rate of our algorithm is about 99.7% which is slightly better than that of the former SDMS. Also, we are able to see the trend and to make a base to find prognostics to estimate the remaining useful life. With this we hope that we have gone one step closer to the final goal of prognosis of SDMS.

  • Nuclear infrastructure systems play an important role in national security. The functions and missions of nuclear infrastructure systems are vital to government, businesses, society and citizen's lives. It is crucial to design nuclear infrastructure for scalability, reliability and robustness. To do this, we can use machine learning, which is a state of the art technology used in various fields ranging from voice recognition, Internet of Things (IoT) device management and autonomous vehicles. In this paper, we propose to design and develop a machine learning algorithm to perform predictive maintenance of nuclear infrastructure. Support vector machine and logistic regression algorithms will be used to perform the prediction. These machine learning techniques have been used to explore and compare rare events that could occur in nuclear infrastructure. As per our literature review, support vector machines provide better performance metrics. In this paper, we have performed parameter optimization for both algorithms mentioned. Existing research has been done in conditions with a great volume of data, but this paper presents a novel approach to correlate nuclear infrastructure data samples where the density of probability is very low. This paper also identifies the respective motivations and distinguishes between benefits and drawbacks of the selected machine learning algorithms.

  • 본 연구는 GIS 진단신뢰성 향상기술 개발을 목적으로, 16개의 인위적 결함을 이용하여 부분방전 신호를 발생시키고 검출하여 그 패턴인식 확률을 높이기 위하여 신경망에 Genetic Algorithm (GA) 을 적용하였다. 이를 위하여 다음과 같은 5가지 서로 다른 신경망 모델을 선택하였다: Back Propagation (BP), Jordan-Elman Network (JEN), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Self-Organizing Feature Map (SOFM) 및 Support Vector Machine (SVM). 이와 같이 선택된 모델에 동일한 데이터를 학습 시키고 패턴인식 확률을 비교 및 분석하였다. 실험 결과에 의하면, BP의 인식률이 가장 높고 다음으로 JEN의 인식률이 높이 나타났으며, 후자의 경우 모든 결함에 대하여 정확한 패턴분류를 한 반면에 전자의 경우 1.8% 의 분류 오차가 발생하였다. 따라서 인식률이 높은 신경망이 더 정확한 패턴분류를 보장하지 못한다는 실험적 결과를 고려 할 때, 인식률이 높은 두 개의 모델을 선정하여 각각의 출력에 일정한 가중치를 주고 합산하여 새로운 출력을 얻는 방법을 제안한다.

Real-time seismic structural response prediction system based on support vector machine

  • Floor acceleration plays a major role in the seismic design of nonstructural components and equipment supported by structures. Large floor acceleration may cause structural damage to or even collapse of buildings. For precision instruments in high-tech factories, even small floor accelerations can cause considerable damage in this study. Six P-wave parameters, namely the peak measurement of acceleration, peak measurement of velocity, peak measurement of displacement, effective predominant period, integral of squared velocity, and cumulative absolute velocity, were estimated from the first 3 s of a vertical ground acceleration time history. Subsequently, a new predictive algorithm was developed, which utilizes the aforementioned parameters with the floor height and fundamental period of the structure as the new inputs of a support vector regression model. Representative earthquakes, which were recorded by the Structure Strong Earthquake Monitoring System of the Central Weather Bureau in Taiwan from 1992 to 2016, were used to construct the support vector regression model for predicting the peak floor acceleration (PFA) of each floor. The results indicated that the accuracy of the predicted PFA, which was defined as a PFA within a one-level difference from the measured PFA on Taiwan's seismic intensity scale, was 96.96%. The proposed system can be integrated into the existing earthquake early warning system to provide complete protection to life and the economy.

  • For the fault diagnosis of power transformer, we develop a diagnosis algorithm based on support vector machine. The proposed fault diagnosis system consists of data acquisition, fault/normal diagnosis, and identification of fault. In data acquisition part, concentrated gases are extracted from transformer for data gas analysis. In fault/normal diagnosis part, KEPCO based decision rule is performed to separate normal state from fault types. The determination of fault type is executed by multi-class SVM in identification part. As the simulation results to verify the effectiveness, the proposed method showed more improved classification results than conventional methods.

Neuronal Spike Train Decoding Methods for the Brain-Machine Interface Using Nonlinear Mapping (비선형매핑 기반 뇌-기계 인터페이스를 위한 신경신호 spike train 디코딩 방법)

  • Brain-machine interface (BMI) based on neuronal spike trains is regarded as one of the most promising means to restore basic body functions of severely paralyzed patients. The spike train decoding algorithm, which extracts underlying information of neuronal signals, is essential for the BMI. Previous studies report that a linear filter is effective for this purpose and there is no noteworthy gain from the use of nonlinear mapping algorithms, in spite of the fact that neuronal encoding process is obviously nonlinear. We designed several decoding algorithms based on the linear filter, and two nonlinear mapping algorithms using multilayer perceptron (MLP) and support vector machine regression (SVR), and show that the nonlinear algorithms are superior in general. The MLP often showed unsatisfactory performance especially when it is carelessly trained. The nonlinear SVR showed the highest performance. This may be due to the superiority of the SVR in training and generalization. The advantage of using nonlinear algorithms were more profound for the cases when there are false-positive/negative errors in spike trains.
