Statistical Analysis of Operating Parameters on Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (고도처리 하수처리장 운전조건의 통계분석)

  • Statistical analysis between operating parameters and effluent quality on advanced wastewater treatment plant was performed. Through factor analysis four factors derived varimax rotation were selected each plant. Four components explained $80\%,\;82\%$ of the total variance of the process, respectively. The components on MLE plant were identified in the following order: 1) HRT increase and BOD load decrease by influent decrease, 2) Biomass, 3) SVI increase by internal return increase, 4) Microbial diversity by SRT increase. On $A_2O$ plant, we defined them as follows: factor 1, high MLSS by return rate increase, HRT increase by influent decrease; factor 2, biomass; factor 3, BOD of influent; factor 4 was relate to DO.

  • A fuzzy expert system for prediction and mitigation of sludge bulking was developed for an activated sludge process which treats waste water from a food industry. The developed system is able not only to infer the degree of progress of sludge bulking but also to generate remedial operation guides which may be sent to the local controllers as remote set points. One of the important consequences through this study is the BI (Bulking Index) inferred by the bulking prediction expert system was found to have a close correlation with the SVI (Sludge Volume Index) which is a practical measure of degree of bulking but needs tedious chores for its measurement.

Effects of Landfill Leachate on the Treatment of Municipal Wastewater (매립지 침출수가 도시하수처리에 미치는 영향)

  • A bench-scale continuous activated sludge system was operated in order to study the effects of solid waste landfill leachate on municipal wastewater treatment. The leachate sample was collected from Nanjido landfill. During the 7 weeks of operational period, the leachate content in the influent fed to the system was increased stepwise from 3% to 5% and 7%. The solids retention time was the major process control parameter, and it was 10 days. With the municipal wastewater alone, COD removal was 75%. The removal percents, however, decreased to 60% and 45% when the leachate content was 3% and 7%, respectively. For the wastewater spiked with the leachate, the sludge production was higher than for the municipal wastewater alone. Sludge settleability determined by SVI deteriorated with the increase of leachate content. The specific oxygen uptake rate, however, was measured higher as leachate content increased.

Evaluating Two Types of Rectangular Secondary Clarifier Performance at Biological Nutrient Removal Facilities (생물학적 고도처리공법에 적용된 두 형태의 장방형 이차침전지 성능 파악)

  • There are two types of rectangular secondary clarifier at biological nutrient removal (BNR) facility to settle MLSS; conventional activated sludge secondary clarifier and Gould Type I clarifier. In this study, the performances of two types at respective biological nutrient removal facility are compared using weekly operational data. Surface Overflow Rate (SOR), Surface Loading Rate (SLR), Sludge Volume Index (SVI), secondary effluent SS concentration are studied. It has found that Gould Type I has 3.5 times less average secondary effluent SS concentration that is 2.4 mg/L than that of conventional activated sludge secondary clarifier. Both SOR and SLR have shown little effect on secondary effluent SS concentrations at Gould Type I clarifier in contrary that SOR affects the secondary effluent SS concentrations at conventional activated sludge rectangular secondary clarifier. From this study, it is recommended that Gould Type I must be considered for secondary clarifier when BNR plant is designed.

Biological Treatment of Livestock Wastewater using Aerobic Granular Sludge (호기성 그래뉼 슬러지를 이용한 축산폐수의 생물학적 처리에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the treatment of livestock wastewater using an aerobic granular sludge based sequencing batch reactor was investigated. The reactor operation was carried out by general injection and split injection methods. The average removal efficiency of organic matter after the adaptation period was 71.5 and 87.4%, respectively. Some untreated organic matter was attributed to recalcitrant organic matter. The average removal efficiency of total nitrogen was 65.6 and 88.4%, respectively. These results indicate that the denitrification reaction by split injection was carried out smoothly. As for the solids, the ratio of aerobic granular sludge/mixed liquor suspended solid can be determined as the main factor of the process operation, and the ratio increased gradually and finally reached 86.0%. Correspondingly, the sludge volume index (SVI) was also improved, reaching 54 mL/g at the end of operation, and it is believed that the application of a short settling time contributed to the improvement of settleability.

Treatment of Wastewater from Agricultural Industrial Complex by Combination of Electrochemical and Activated Sludge Process Systems (전기화학적 방법과 활성오니 공정의 병합에 의한 농공단지폐수 처리)

  • The effects of HRT and effluent time on removals of pollutants in the electrochemical pilot were investigated. COD removal after 8 hour electrochemical reaction time in HRT 30 and 60 minutes were higher than that of 15 minute HRT. Turbidity removal was 90% or greater regardless of conditions during effluent time. Removals of T-N and T-P during effluent time in HRT 30 and 60 minutes were $71{\sim}74%$ and $85{\sim}98%$, respectively. To evaluate the combination of activated sludge process and continuous electrochemical as pretreatment, the removal efficiencies of pollutants was investigated. In two treatment processes of a single activated sludge system and a electrolysis pilot plus activated sludge systems, SVI and MLSS during effluent time were kept with $82{\sim}112$ and $1,230{\sim}1,750$ mg/L, respectively. COD removal was approximately 90% at early effluent time for both treatment systems, but COD removal in a single activated sludge was slightly decreased as effluent time went by, compared with the single activated sludge COD removal was slightly increased in the early stage of the electrolysis plus activated sludge system. Turbidity removal during effluent time was higher than 95% for both treatment systems. T-N removals during effluent time in a single activated sludge system and a electrolysis pilot plus activated sludge systems were $62{\sim}74%$ and $72{\sim}86%$, respectively. T-P removal in a electrolysis pilot plus activated sludge systems was increased by 9% at early effluent time and 15% after 72 hours of effluent time in compared with a single activated sludge system.

Sedimentation and EPS Production by the Change of Dissolved Oxygen Concentration for the Aeration Tank to treat Wastewater with Bacillus sp. (바실러스 미생물을 이용한 하수처리에서 포기조의 DO농도 변화에 따른 EPS 물질생성과 슬러지 침강성에 관한 연구)

  • The factors affecting on sludge sedimentation are reported as F/M ratio, ingredient, composition of influent substrate, dissolved oxygen concentration, temperature, pH, filamentous bacteria and SRT. Aeration tank applying Bacillus sp. has an important role for maintaining the dominant microorganism species to make steady progress for spore growth affecting sedimentation. This research aims to investigate the affecting factor for the sedimentation in B3 system and RABC system with aeration tank applying tapered aeration. Extracellular polymeric substances(EPS), protein and carbohydrate can be produced for the extreme condition, that is down to 0.2 mg/L of dissolved oxygen in the aeration tank. This research found out the relation between the sedimentation and the EPS production, especially the ratio of protein/carbohydrate. The spore of Bacillus sp. was formed at the low DO then microorganisms produced EPS. The results showed that the production of EPS was 109.95 mgEPS/gSS at 1.6 mg/L of DO, however it was 131.77 mgEPS/gSS at 0.5 mg/L of DO. The sedimentation was affected by protein content in EPS and the ratio of protein and carbohydrate. The settleability of sludge was not affected by the ratio of protein/carbohydrate in B3 process, meanwhile settleability was affected by the ratio of it in RABC process, respectively.

Effect of Priming Treatments on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Sorbus alnifolia (Priming 처리가 팥배나무의 종자 발아 및 유묘 생장에 미치는 영향)

  • Seed priming is a useful technique for rapid and uniform seed germination as well as early seedling establishment. This experiment was conducted to find out the optimum condition for Sorbus alnifolia seed priming with four concentrations of four reagents in germination property and seedling growth performance. The results are summarized as follows: Percent germination (PG) varied 2.67% to 24.67%, and S. alnifolia seeds had the highest PG in the treatment that were primed in 100mM $KNO_3$ solution for 2 days. Mean germination time was the shortest in 200 mM $KNO_3$ solution for 2 days. Seed priming with $KNO_3$ solutions increased germination speed (GS) and germination performance index (GPI) compared with non-primed seeds. Especially seed primed with 100 mM $KNO_3$ solution for 2 days showed the highest GS and GPI. The highest relative growth rate (RGR) and seedling vigor index (SVI) was significantly (p<0.05) different from the control and other treatments, respectively. RGR of height (0.0071) and root collar diameter (0.0141) of seedling from primed seeds were the highest in 400 mM NaCl solution for 2 days. The highest SVI (5.43) was observed in the seedlings from seeds primed in 100 mM $KNO_3$ solution for 2 days. Consequently, the optimum reagent and concentration were $KNO_3$ and 100 mM for the effective germination and seedling growth in S. alnifolia

A Study on High Strength Nitrogen Wastewater Treatment and Sludge Granulation Characteristics in a Pilot-scale Air-lift Sequencing Batch Reactor (파일럿 규모의 공기 유동 연속회분반응기에서 고농도 질소제거 및 슬러지 그래뉼화 특성 연구)

  • Selective nitrification and granulation have been carried out in a pilot scale air-lift sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for stable and economical nitrogen removal from wastewater. The SBR showed about 100% nitrification efficiency up to 1.0 kg ${NH_4}^+-N/m^3{\cdot}d$, about 90% efficiency at 1.0-2.0 kg ${NH_4}^+-N/m^3{\cdot}d$, and it was less than 90% when the load was higher than 2.0 kg ${NH_4}^+-N/m^3{\cdot}d$. Nitrite accumulation was induced by selective inhibition of nitrite oxidizing bacteria by free ammonia inhibition and dissolved oxygen limitation. For the purpose, high nitrite ratio (> 0.95) was obtained by keeping the pH higher than 8.0 and dissolved oxygen lower than 1.5 mg/L. In addition, sludge granulation was achieved by keeping reactor settling time to 5 minutes to wash out poor settling sludge and to promote the growth of granulation sludge. The operation accelerated sludge granulation and the sludge volume index (SVI) decreased and stably maintained to less than 75 in 60 days.

Characteristics of wastewater treatment of sewage mixed with industrial wastewater (공장폐수가 혼합된 하수처리장의 하수처리 특성)

  • In this study, characteristics of wastewater treatment of sewage intermittently mixed with industrial wastewater is examined by investigating the operational status of each unit operation and measuring water quality. The bioreactor operating condition was measured for MLSS concentration 2,000~3,000 mg/L, HRT 5.3~16.3 hour, SRT 2.8~66.6 day, and SVI frequently showed the value above 200 which was higher than the optimal range of 50~150. It is thought that the sludge is not in suitable condition for sedimentation caused by the incoming industrial wastewater. When industrial wastewater is come into the system, MLDO inside of bioreactor rapidly increased, rate of nitrification is steeply decreased, and Pin floc. is spilled in the secondary clarifier. In the observance of microorganism showed that various bacterial floc. and ciliata were found as well as actinomycetes and filamentous bacteria(Sphaeotilus) which is known to cause bulking. Efficiency of each unit operation was fairly good in average. However, efficiency of the bioreactor treatment showed high fluctuation by unstable operating condition by intermittently incoming industrial wastewater.
