Analysis of Relationship Between Injection Dose and Exposure Dose in PET/CT Scan: Initial Study (PET/CT에서 방사성 의약품 주입량이 방사선 피폭에 미치는 영향분석: 초기연구)

  • The $^{18}F$-FDG is one of the widely used isotopes for PET/CT scans. Dose amount injected to the patient depends on the characteristics of PET/CT systems. Obviously, the technologists who contact with patients would be exposed as well. In this study, we evaluated the exposed dose of the technologist who works on the PET/CT scanner. The exposed dose were measured every month with the TLDs from 6 technologists. Each technologist is shift-worker who manages 3 different PET/CT systems(Scanner 1(S1): 0.15 mCi/kg, Scanner 2(S2): 0.17 mCi/kg, Scanner 3(S3): 0.12 mCi/kg). The average exposed doses of technologists for each PET/CT system were measured as 0.76 mSv for S1, 0.93 mSv for S2 and 0.47 mSv for S3. The maximum dose was 1.12 mSv and minimum was 0.42 mSv. The results showed that there was a correlation between exposed dose and PET/CT system(p<0.005). Less injected dose for patient occurs less exposed dose for technologist. Various studies for the low dose PET/CT system are required for not only the patient but also the technologist.

  • The volatility in the financial data is usually measured by conditional variance. Two main streams for gauging conditional variance are stochastic volatility (SV) model and autoregressive type approach (GARCH). This article is conducting comparative study between SV and GARCH through the Korean Stock Prices Index (KOSPI) data. It is seen that SV model is slightly better than GARCH(1,1) in analyzing KOSPI data.

Evaluation on the Radiological Shielding Design of a Hot Cell Facility (핫셀시설의 방사선 안전성 평가)

  • The hot cell facility for research activities related to the lithium reduction of spent fuel, which is designed to permit safe handling of source materials with radioactivity levels up to 1,385 TBq, is planned to be built. To meet this goal, the facility is designed to keep gamma and neutron radiation lower than the recommended dose-rate in normally occupied areas. The calculations peformed with QAD-CGGP and MCNP-4C are used to evaluate the proposed engineering design concepts that would provide acceptable dose-rates during a normal operation in hot cell facility. The maximum effective gamma dose-rates on the surfaces of the facility at operation area and at service area calculated by QAD-CGGP are estimated to be $2.10{\times}10^{-3}, 2.97{\times}10^{-3} and 1.01{\times}10{-1}$ mSv/h, respectively. And those calculated by MCNP-4C are $1.60{\times}10^{-3}, 2.99{\times}10^{-3} and 7.88{\times}10^{-2}$ mSv/h, respectively, The dose-rates contributed by neutrons are one order of magnitude less than that of gamma sources. Therefore, it is confirmed that the radiological design for hot cell facility satisfies the Korean criterion of 0.01 mSv/h for the operation area and 0.15 mSv/h for the service (maintenance) area.

Evaluation of Influence of Anesthetics on Canine Stroke Volume and Feasibility of ACT Using Echocardiography (개에서 심초음파 검사시 마취제가 일회심박출량에 미치는 영향과 ACT법의 적용가능성 평가)

  • Stroke volume (SV) is an important parameter for monitoring of a critically ill animal and is echocardiographically measured using the modified Simpson's method, automated contour tracking (ACT) method and left ventricular outflow method. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of anesthesia (isoflurane) on the SV during echocardiographic examination and to evaluate the feasibility of ACT method for measuring the stroke volume without anesthesia (conscious state). Ten clinically healthy adult Beagle dogs (3 male and 7 female, weighing 6.6-10.8 kg, aged 2-3 years old) were enrolled. Our study found that the dogs anesthetized have a significantly lower SV, compared to the SV of dogs unanesthetized, regardless of methods measuring SV. In addition, in the dogs without anesthesia, the SV measured by ACT method was significantly lower than the other two methods. This result implies that the anesthesia may significantly lower the SV. Thus, the measurement of SV under anesthesia may not be adequate in veterinary field. Furthermore because the ACT method measured SV significantly lower than other two methods, this method may be inappropriate for measuring SV in even conscious dogs.

Dose analysis of nearby residents and workers due to the emission accident of gaseous radioactive material at the spent resin mixture treatment facility

  • The dose from a possible accident at a microwave-based spent resin mixture treatment facility that was to be installed and operated at the Wolsong nuclear power plant was analyzed to evaluate the radiological safety prior to its installation and operation. The dose to which workers and nearby residents are likely to be exposed was calculated based on the atmospheric dispersion and deposition factors using the XOQDOQ code. The highest atmospheric dispersion factors were 1.349E-05 s/m3 (workers) and 1.534E-06 s/m3 (residents). The highest doses due to emissions from the mock-up tank before operation were 1.91E-06 mSv (workers) and 1.78E-07 mSv (residents). Even after 3 h of operation, emissions from the mock-up tank had the greatest impact ranging from 4.63E-08 to 1.24E-06 mSv (workers) and 2.74E-10 to 1.16E-07 mSv (residents), respectively. The doses were 7.09E-09-4.55E-07 mSv and 4.18E-11-4.25E-08 mSv at 4-5 h of operation, and the maximum doses after operation reached 5.69E-07 mSv and 5.31E-08 mSv for the workers and residents, respectively. Even at the exclusion area boundary (EAB), 4.76E-08-9.51E-07 mSv (annual dose:9.52E-05–1.90E-03 mSv/y) was below the dose limit of the EAB, and the safety of the facility installation inside the NPP was confirmed.

How Effective Are Radiation Reducing Gloves in C-arm Fluoroscopy-guided Pain Interventions?

  • Background: The physician's hands are close to the X-ray field in C-arm fluoroscopy-guided pain interventions. We prospectively investigated the radiation attenuation of Proguard RR-2 gloves. Methods: In 100 cases, the effective doses (EDs) of two dosimeters without a radiation-reducing glove were collected. EDs from the two dosimeters-one dosimeter wrapped with a glove and the other dosimeter without a glove-were also measured at the side of the table (Group 1, 140 cases) and at a location 20 cm away from the side of the table (Group 2, 120 cases). Mean differences such as age, height, weight, radiation absorbed dose (RAD), exposure time, ED, and ratio of EDs were analyzed. Results: In the EDs of two dosimeters without gloves, there were no significant differences ($39.0{\pm}36.3{\mu}Sv$ vs. $38.8{\pm}36.4{\mu}Sv$) (P = 0.578). The RAD ($192.0{\pm}182.0radcm^2$) in Group 2 was higher than that ($132.3{\pm}103.5radcm^2$) in Group 1 (P = 0.002). The ED ($33.3{\pm}30.9{\mu}Sv$) of the dosimeter without a glove in Group 1 was higher than that ($12.3{\pm}8.8{\mu}Sv$) in Group 2 (P < 0.001). The ED ($24.4{\pm}22.4{\mu}Sv$) of the dosimeter wrapped with a glove in Group 1 was higher than that ($9.2{\pm}6.8{\mu}Sv$) in Group 2 (P < 0.001). No significant differences were noted in the ratio of EDs ($73.5{\pm}6.7%$ vs. $74.2{\pm}9.3%$, P = 0.469) between Group 1 and Group 2. Conclusions: Proguard RR-2 gloves have a radiation attenuation effect of 25.8-26.5%. The radiation attenuation is not significantly different by intensity of scatter radiation or the different RADs of C-arm fluoroscopy.

  • In the process of photon treatments, linear accelerators with energies higher than 10 MV produce neutrons through the (${\gamma}$, n) interactions with the composite materials of the linac head md these materials further produce the induced radiations. We investigate the possible risks from these induced radiations especially in the wedge filters to the radiation workers. Wedge filters are used to modify the isodose profiles in the radiation treatment using the linear accelerator and always be handled by the radiation workers. For the background radiation, we measured the radiation in both the waiting room and the outside of the building for two hospitals, S and H. The results of S hospital were $0.11\;{\mu}Sv/hr$ and $0.10\;{\mu}Sv/hr$ for waiting room and outside respectively, and in the case of H hospital, they were $0.12\;{\mu}Sv/hr$ and $0.11\;{\mu}Sv/hr$. Using a survey meter, we measured the radiation from wedge filters inserted in 10 MV and 15 MV Siemens linear accelerators. The time series measurements were done in ${\sim}1$ minutes after exposure of 5 Gy of monitor units for the field size of $25{\times}25cm^2$. The starting value of 10 MV machine was about $3.26\;{\mu}Sv/hr$, which was three times higher than that of 10 MV. The measured radiation was from $^{28}Al$ and $^{53}Fe$ with a half life of 3.5 min. If the treatment patients are $20{\sim}50$ per day and the number of process of wedge filter change per patient is one or two, the annual dose equivalent is $0.08{\sim}0.4\;mSv$ for 10 MV, and $0.27{\sim}1.36\;mSv$ for 15 MV, which are in the range of dose equivalent limits of radiation workers.

Monthly Variation of Water Mass Distribution and Current in the Cheju Strait

  • The monthly observations of hydrography in the Cheju Strait from September 1995 to June 1998 show that the Cheju Strait is occupied mostly by Tsushima Current Water in winter and coastal waters in summer. In summer, the Yangtze Coastal Water appears in the upper layer and cold water in the lower layer. Especially, the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water appears in August 1997, and the clockwise flow of warm water along the northwestern coasts of Cheju Island is disturbed by an eastward expansion of the cold water from the northwest. The cold water expansion seems to be partly associated with strong southeasterly winds. Current measurements in the Cheju Strait suggest that there exists steady eastward barotropic component of about 5 cm/sec, which corresponds to 0.2 Sv barotropic transport in the Cheju Strait. Geostropic transport (baroclinic component) ranges from 0.1 Sv in winter to 0.4 Sv in summer. By adding the barotrophic component of 0.2 Sv, the total transport varies from 0.3 Sv to 0.6 Sv, which is consistent with previous estimations. The transport increase in summer seems to be caused by the expansion of coastal water to the Cheju Strait.

Characteristics of GMR-SV Sensor for Measurement of Mineral Contents in Edible Water

  • The mineral dissolution sensor system using GMR-SV and glass/Mg(200 nm) was prepared and characterized. The magnetic field sensitivity of GMR-SV to microscopic magnetic variation was about 0.8%/Oe. The change that occurs when Mg-film dissolves in water, the solubility of water, which is one of the basic properties of mineral water, was sensed by measuring the subtle variation of an electric current. In the case of edible water with Mg mineral added, bubbles were generated on the surface of the Mg film in the first 45 minutes, and the number of drops that were dissolved more rapidly than with the tap and DI waters later reduced to zero. For the edible water samples that each had different mineral Mg concentrations, the Mg solubility speed significantly differed. After injecting Mg film into the edible water, the magnetoresistance of the output GMR-SV signal decreased from a maximum of $45.4\;{\Omega}$ to a minimum of $43.6\;{\Omega}$. The measurement time was within 1 min, giving the rate of change ${\Delta}R/{\Delta}t=0.18\;{\Omega}/s$. This measurement system can be applied to develop a mineral Mg solubility GMR-SV sensor that can be used to sense the change from edible water to reduced alkali.

Fast Sequential Probability Ratio Test Method to Obtain Consistent Results in Speaker Verification (화자확인에서 일정한 결과를 얻기 위한 빠른 순시 확률비 테스트 방법)

  • A new version of sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) which has been investigated in utterance-length control is proposed to obtain uniform response results in speaker verification (SV). Although SPRTs can obtain fast responses in SV tests, differences in the performance may occur depending on the compositions of consonants and vowels in the sentences used. In this paper, a fast sequential probability ratio test (FSPRT) method that shows consistent performances at all times regardless of the compositions of vocalized sentences for SV will be proposed. In generating frames, the FSPRT will first conduct SV test processes with only generated frames without any overlapping and if the results do not satisfy discrimination criteria, the FSPRT will sequentially use frames applied with overlapping. With the progress of processes as such, the test will not be affected by the compositions of sentences for SV and thus fast response outcomes and even consistent performances can be obtained. Experimental results show that the FSPRT has better performance to the SPRT method while requiring less complexity with equal error rates (EER).
