An experimental study on fatigue performance of cryogenic metallic materials for IMO type B tank

  • Three materials SUS304, 9% Ni steel and Al 5083-O alloy, which are considered possible candidate for International Maritime Organization (IMO) type B Cargo Containment System, were studied. Monotonic tensile, fatigue, fatigue crack growth rate and Crack Tip Opening Displacement tests were carried out at room, intermediate low ($-100^{\circ}C$) and cryogenic ($-163^{\circ}C$) temperatures. The initial yield and tensile strengths of all materials tended to increase with decreasing temperature, whereas the change in elastic modulus was not as remarkable. The largest and smallest improvement ratio of the initial yield strengths due to a temperature reduction were observed in the SUS304 and Al 5083-O alloy, respectively. The fatigue strengths of the three materials increased with decreasing temperature. The largest increase in fatigue strength was observed in the Al 5083-O alloy, whereas the 9% Ni steel sample showed the smallest increase. In the fatigue crack growth rate test, SUS304 and Al 5083-O alloy showed a decrease in the crack propagation rate, due to decrease in temperature, but no visible improvement in da/dN was observed in the case of 9% Ni steel. In the Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) test, CTOD values were converted to critical crack length for the comparison with different thickness specimens. The critical crack length tended to decrease in the case of SUS304 and increase for the Al 5083-O alloy with decreasing temperature. In case of 9% Ni steel, change of critical crack length was not observed due to temperature decrease. In addition, the changing material properties according to the temperature of the LNG tank were analyzed according to the international code for the construction and equipment of ships carrying liquefied gases in bulk (IGC code) and the rules of classifications.

고인장 합금재를 활용한 철근콘크리트 기둥의 내진보강공법 개발에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on the Development of a Seismic Reinforcement Method for Reinforced Concrete Columns using High-tensile Alloy Materials)

  • 연구목적: 본 연구에서는고인장 합금재를 활용하여 기존 철근콘크리트 기둥의 내진성능 향상이 가능한 새로운 형식의 볼트 체결식 내진보강재를 개발하고자 한다. 연구방법: 고인장 합금재인 SUS304 및 일반 구조용 강재인 SS275를 이용하여 T형 단면 강판을 제작하고 이를 SCM435의 고장력 볼트로 체결한 내진보강재 실험체를 제작하여 휨 실험을 통해 재료적 특성이 내진 보강성능에 미치는 영향에 대해 비교 분석한다. 연구결과: SUS304를 사용한 실험체가 7% 높은 최대 강도와 22% 높은 항복 강도를 보이며, 360MPa 더 높은 압축응력을 나타낸다. 또한 중립축의 변화도 더 미소하여 더 우수한 내력을 가진 것으로 판단된다. 결론: 동일한 단면에서 SUS304를 사용한 내진보강재가 휨 강도, 항복강도, 인장강도, 중립축 변화, 연성능력 측면에서 더 우수한 것으로 판단되며 추후 연구에서 철근콘크리트 기둥 실물 실험체에 적용함으로써 기둥-보강재간 일체 거동에 대한 실험이 필요하다고 사료된다.

SUS304합금의 마찰접합특성 평가 (Evaluation of the Friction Welding Properties on SUS304 Alloy)

  • The friction welding characteristics of stainless steels, mainly used in energy and chemical plant industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high strength, was evaluated in this study. Friction welding was introduced and conducted at a rotation speed of 2,000 RPM, friction pressure of 30 MPa, burn-off length of 5 mm and upset pressure of 110 ~ 200 MPa on rod typed specimens. The grain boundary characteristics distributions such a grain size, shape, misorientation angle and kernel average misorientation of the welds were clarified by electron backscattering diffraction method. The application of friction welding on SUS304 alloy resulted in a significant refinement of the grain size in the weld zone (5.11 mm) compared to that of the base material (48.09 mm). The mechanical properties of the welds, on the other hand, appeared to be relatively low or similar to those of the base material, which were mainly caused by dislocation density in the initial material and grain refinement in the welds.

수중 충격파를 이용한 스테인레스 스틸과 마그네슘합금의 폭발용접에 관한 연구 (Underwater Explosive Welding of Stainless Steel and Magnesium Alloy)

  • 마그네슘 합금은 경량화 재료로서 많은 주목을 받고 있으나, 스테인레스 스틸과의 접합이 어려운 문제점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 수중충격파를 이용하여 스테인레스 스틸(SUS304)과 마그네슘 합금(AZ31)의 폭발용접을 수행하고 접합특성에 관한 분석을 수행하였다. SUS304의 두께는 0.5 mm와 1 mm를 사용하였으며, 폭약과 재료의 이격거리는 45 mm, 폭약의 설치경사는 $20^{\circ}$로 하여 실험한 결과, 두 재료의 접합면에서 중간층(resolidified interlayer)이 형성되었다. 중간층의 형성을 억제하기 위하여 폭약과 재료의 거리를 60 mm로 증가시켰으며 폭약의 경사는 $30^{\circ}$으로 변경하여 폭발용접실험을 수행하였다. 그 결과, 폭약과 재료 사이의 간격과 경사각이 증가함에 따라 중간층이 나타나지 않는 경향을 보였다. 이 중간층에 대하여 EPMA분석한 결과, 중간층은 두 금속의 재료가 혼합되어 있는 것으로 확인 되었으며, 경도는 두 금속의 평균 경도에 해당 됨이 확인 되었다.

Buckling and postbuckling behavior of solid superelastic shape memory alloy shafts

  • Observing the unique stress-strain curves of the superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) in tension and compression, the primary intention of this study is to investigate the behavior of the shafts made of the same material, under torsional loading-unloading cycles for large angle of twist. Experiments have been performed for the superelastic SMA shafts with different unsupported lengths and angles of twist and the results are compared with those of stainless steel (SUS304) shafts under similar test conditions. As expected for the superelastic SMA, the residual strains are small enough after each cycle and consequently, the hysteresis under loading-reverse loading is much narrower than that for the SUS304. For large angle of twists, the torsional strength of the superelastic SMA increases nonlinearly and exceeds that of SUS304. Most interestingly, the slender solid superelastic SMA shafts are found to buckle when acted upon torsion for large angle of twist.

중금속 창연산화납계 저온유리 분말을 이용한 세라믹스/금속의 접합거동 (Joining Behavior of Ceramics to Metal by Using Lead-bismate Heavy Metal Glass Frit)

  • The joining behavior of forsterite ceramics to SUS304 alloy using $8PbO-78Bi_2O_3-8B_2O_3-4ZnO-2SiO_2$ (wt%) system glass frit was investigated. The contact angle was smaller than $90^{\circ}$ at a temperature of $460^{\circ}C$. Redox reaction at the interface between forsterite and SUS304 was found to appear when the electrons in the metal part moved toward the glass part and the oxygen ions in glass moved to the metal side. The decrease of the surface tension due to the PbO solubility on the forsterite side contributed to the better wetting behavior at low temperature.

탄소강과 스테인리스강의 진공브레이징에 관한 연구 (A study on the vacuum brazing of carbon steels to a stainless steel)

  • 본 연구에서는 위의 두번째 연구동향과 맥락을 같이하는 것으로서 스테인리스 강(SUS304)에 대한 진공브레이징 연구 및 탄소강의 진공 브레이징에 대한 연구결과들 을 토대로 하여 SUS304와 탄소강과의 진공브레이징 현상을 연구하였는데 특히 모재의 탄소함유량, 브레이징시간 및 접합부 틈새(joint clearance)등에 따라 접합부에 나타 나는 여러 금속학적 현상의 규명 및 접합강도(joint strength)에 대해 변수들이 미치 는 영향을 연구 하였다.

SUS304L 튜브의 U-Bending 성형공정에 관한 해석적·실험적 연구 (Numerical and Experimental Study of U-Bending of SUS304L Heat Transfer Tubes)

  • As a major type of heat exchanger, the steam generator (SG) produces steam from heat energy of a nuclear power plant reactor. The steam produced by the steam generator flows into a turbine, and plays an important role in electric power generation. The heat transfer tubes in the steam generator consist of approximately 10,000 U-shaped tubes, which perform a structural role and act as thermal boundaries. The heat transfer tubes conduct the thermal energy between the primary coolant (about $320^{\circ}C$, $157kgf/cm^2$) obtained from the reactor and the secondary coolant (about $260^{\circ}C$, $60kgf/cm^2$) as part of the secondary system. Recently, the heat transfer tubes in the steam generator of the pressurized water reactor (PWR) are primarily produced from Alloy 600 and Alloy 690 seamless tubes. As a pilot study to find process parameters for the cold U-bending process using rotary draw bending, numerical and experimental investigations were conducted to produce U-shaped tubes from long straight SUS304L seamless tubes. 3D finite element simulations were run using ABAQUS Explicit with consideration of the elastic recovery. The process parameters studied were the angular speed, the operation period and the bending angle. Experimental verifications were conducted to insure the suitability of the final U-shaped configurations with respect to both ovality and wall thickness.
