The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of STS (Science, Technology and Society) instruction on 5th graders learning motivation and scientific attitudes, using ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) strategies. A total of 53 fifth grade students were sampled from an elementary school, and were assigned to the experimental and the control groups. For four weeks, the experimental group was treated with STS instruction using ARCS strategies while the control group was treated with traditional instruction. The result of this study showed that STS instruction using ARCS strategies was more effective in the development of students' learning motivation and scientific attitudes.
The purpose of this study was to test effect of STS instruction using the subject matter of marine life on middle school students' perception of ocean. The objects of 156 students were sampled from the 1st grade of a middle school and were divided into an experimental group and a control group. 79 students of the control group were treated with traditional instruction, while 77 students of the experimental group were treated with STS instruction materials. All of the students took test of perception of ocean before and after the instructions. The perception of ocean was divided into four categories; value of sea, development of marine resources, research and conservation of sea, and perception of sea-related vocation. The results of the pretest and the posttest indicated that the perception of ocean of the experimental group was statistically significantly higher than that of the control group. Specially in categories of the value of sea and the research and conservation of sea, the scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of STS program in Earth Science instruction on science-related attitude and scientific achievement of high school students. The students were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was taught by the STS program and the control group was taught by the conventional lecture. The science-related attitudes have been improved in the experimental group more positively than in the control group. The experimental group showed a higher improvement in scientific achievements than the control group.
This study is intended to examine an effectiveness of STS module concerning food waste, 'Even if food waste is the money, would you throw it away', in the areas of affective domains related to science and attitudes towards environmental problems. For this study, one group of 142 seventh graders attending 'L' middle school in Iksan city, Jeonrabukdo received 8 class hours with this module. Their affective domains related to science and attitudes towards environmental problems were measured by pre- and post-test design in a single group. In addition, their views on STS instruction was also analyzed. Results are as follows. Students in the transition period who had been taught with this module showed that they had a statistically significant effectiveness in interests related to science, scientific attitudes and execution towards environmental problems(p<.05). Students taught with this module had a positive views on the STS instructional methods or contents. It was also shown that their recognition or behavior towards environmental problems have been changed positively.
This study was intended to develop the STS module regarding conservation of water resources, called "A Project for the Conservation of Water Resources". Since each theme consisted of 2 subject activities, they had total 8 subject activities. Developed STS module was applied to 113 male students of 11th grader of D High School in Incheon. After they received 8 periods of the developed STS module, the environmental sensitivity and environmental conservation behavior and the interest of the affective domains related to science were determined. Results were as follows; Four themes of this module were 'What are the water resources?', 'What is a main cause for the water pollution?', 'A drinking water? or non-drinking water?' and 'Making UCC for the water resources'. Since each theme consisted of 2 subject activities, they were for total 8 periods. Developed STS module was found to be appropriate for the STS and they could be applied to the classroom easily. Students who were instructed according to the developed STS module showed that there was a statistically significant enhancement in the environmental sensitivity and environmental conservation behavior and in the area of interest of the affective domains related to science. Students who were instructed according to the developed STS module showed positive responses to the instructional methods by STS. Based on students' interview, they revealed that they were impressed with the hands-on activities and the process of subject activities. Instruction with STS module seemed to be more appropriate way of teaching compared to the traditional way of teaching. However, it will be necessary to develop more modules or programs which could be linked from the elementary school level to the high school level and to use them consistently in order to maximize their effects.

This study investigates student achievement and science-related attitudes on STS hypothetical deductive instruction strategy in the water section of high school chemistry. Two 11th grade co-ed high school classes participated in the study; one control group and one treatment group. After being taught for 10 class periods during the second semester. ANCOVA analysis revealled no significant difference (p>.05) between two groups' achievement tests. However, analysis by ANCOVA did show that the scores for science-related attitudes in the treatment group were significantly higher than those of the control group (p<.05). In particular, the scores of science learning contents and science value about science-related attitude were significantly higher in the treatment group.

The purpose of this research was to determine whether the present Korean teacher education programs for secondary science teachers are effective in improving the teacher conceptions of constructivism and STS. It is because the current Korean National Science Curriculum is consistent with both ideas as reforms. The teacher education programs sampled in the research included pre-service programs and two types of in-service programs. These two were the Qualifying In-service Program and the Iowa Korean Science Teachers Workshop. The Iowa Program was considered as an experimental program emphasized the constructivist perspective. Specially designed questionnaires for identifying teacher conceptions before and after the programs were administered. The conceptions about constructivism and STS improved as a result of the instruction in both of the pre-service and in-service teacher education programs. The pre-service program was more effective than the in-service programs in improving the teacher conceptions of both constructivism and STS. The Qualifying Inservice program was less effective than Iowa Korean Science Teachers Workshop. It was necessary for inservice programs for Korean secondary science teachers to be more emphasized on constructivism and STS. Iowa Korean Science Teachers Workshop provided a possible example to design a new special in-service program focused on constructivist perspectives as a way of aligning the Korean National Science Curriculum more quickly with recommended teaching practices in Korean schools.

The main purposes of this study is to develop a web-based STS biology instruction program (WB-STS) for the scientifically gifted students. The specific main research questions were as follows; 1. How can the WB-STS for biology education be developed and what are the primary components involved in it? 2. Is there any proper validity for developed the WB-STS in biology education? To solve the above mentioned problems, several procedures were applied. First, in order to develop WB-STS for the scientifically gifted students, NCISE, Renzulli' s Enrichment Triad Model and the Iowa Chautauqua program's main characteristics were analyzed systematically and the principles and general process for constructing WB-STS were examined. Additionally, the needs of students and the goals of Biology education were identified thoroughly. And then all these ideas were embodied in an agenda for constructing WB-STS. Second, to analyse the validity and utility of developing WB-STS, a questionnaire was developed and submitted to seven specialists and a group of twenty students who would participate in the experiment later. The main results of study are summarized below: First, WB-STS appeared to be successfully constructed based on Renzulli' s Enrichment Triad Model and the Iowa Chautauqua program. Its main features are that it was made emphasizing a learner-centered approach and constructive learning. It is composed of five steps: Scientific theme selection -${\rightarrow}$Exploration ${\rightarrow}$ Concept & Principle Check ${\rightarrow}$ Finding Solution ${\rightarrow}$ Action. Second, seven specialists and a group of students assessed the developed WB-STS's validity and utility with a questionnaire, the results appeared satisfactory. Students showed high interest in WB-STS and gave a positive evaluation of WB-STS.
In this study, we applied the elementary performance assessment instrument on 575 theme in science instruction which it had been developed on the previous study. Sixty-seven elementary students participated in this study and were assigned into two groups: One was assigned to an experimental group since they were taught with the instrument (N=32) and the other was assigned to the comparison group since they followed teachers guide of 7th Korean National Curriculum (N=35). Prior to and after teaching, tests on the science attitude, science process skill, and science knowledge domains were administrated. The results were analyzed quantitatively. Further, we also investigated students recognition about the instrument and the science class qualitatively according to the instrument. The results showed that there were statistically significant improvements on science process skills and aspects of the understanding of science knowledge. Many students were aware of them positively as well. However, a few problems, including too many amounts of writing and difficulties in communication with one another, were appeared.
The effects of education utilizing history of science on science achievement and attitudes of the ninth grade students were investigated according to their achievement level, along with the development of teaching and ;earning materials. A total of 144 ninth grade students were divided into the experiment and control group. Instructing students using history of science was performed in the experiment group, while conventional instruction was used in the control group. The scores of both pre-test and post-test were estimated by ANCOVA. Instructions applying history of science were more effective in increasing the students' science achievement and attitude than conventional instructions. In particular, the former enhanced the achievements of the upper-level students, more than it did for the middle and lower-level students. In addition, using history of science showed a better effect on higher and middle-level students, in improving their attitudes toward science, than it did for lower-level students. This study suggests that the instruction utilizing history of science should be designed based on the students' achievement level, and that various teaching and learning materials related to the instruction were helpful.
