The topography is recognized as an important factor in determining the streamflow response of watershed to precipitation. In watershed analysis, stream networks are very important parameters. Each DEM grid size and flowaccumulation threshold value of drainage accumulation matrix have influence on stream networks extracted by using grid DEM. Therefore, stream networks extracted from DEM varies with each DEM grid size and flowaccumulation threshold value. Generally, small threshold values will generate more detailed stream network with higher drainage density High threshold values will generate coarser stream networks. In this paper, total stream length in the study area was used to calculate the flowaccumulation threshold value by each DEM grid size. Stream network was derived by each DEM grid size, which is applied flowaccumulation threshold value. Regression equation was derived by correlation between flowaccumulation threshold value and each DEM grid size.
Flow resistance in a natural stream is caused by complex factors, such as the grains on the bed, vegetation, and bed-form, reach profile. Flow resistance in a generally stable gravel bed stream is due to protrudent grains from bed. Therefore, the flow resistance can be calculated by equivalent roughness in gravel bed stream, but estimation of equivalent roughness is difficult because nonuniform size and irregular arrangement of distributed grain on natural stream bed. In previous study, equivalent roughness is empirically estimated using characteristic grain size. However, application of empirical equation have uncertainty in stream that stream bed characteristic differs. In this study, we developed a model using an analytical method considering grain diameter distribution characteristics of grains on the bed and also taking into account flow resistance acting on each grain. Also, the model consider the protrusion height of grain.

This paper proposes variable stream and sample size(VSSS) group control charts in which both the number of streams selected for sampling and sample size from each of the selected streams are allowed to vary based on the values of the preceding sample statistics. The proposed charts select a small portion of streams and take samples of size n = 1 if both the largest and smallest of sample means fall between the lower and upper threshold limits, and select a large portion of streams and take samples of size n > 1 otherwise. A Markov chain approach is used to derive the formulas for evaluating the performances of the proposed charts. Numerical comparisons are made between the VSSS and fixed stream and sample size(FSSS) group control charts.
Sediments and river waters form the channel of Hwasun-cheon were studied in sedimentological size and geochemical analyses of metallic elements for the purposes of identification of depositional environments and geochemical characteristics. The sizes of sediments are assigned to pebble to coarse sand in mean size and polymodal in distribution. And the sediments are poorly to very poorly sorted and positively skewed. According to the grain size distributions of the sediments, the Hwasun-cheon belongs to gravel-bed river on the basis of the grain size distribution of the sediments. The behaviors of metallic elements in the sediments mainly depend on not grain size distribution but the geology connected with geomorphological reliefs near the stream. Contamination indices(CI) of Zn, Cu and Pb are 2.83 to 6.96 with average 4.31 in the sediments. Hwasun-cheon is assigned to general stream type in accordance with water quality of physical factors and chemical characteristics by Piper's diagram. Though meaningful values of BOD, T-N, T-P were locally depicted near Masan-ri, Hwasun-eup and Jiseok-cheon areas, artificial metal concentration do not represent in the most area of the stream. Sediments and river water are considered that the relatively more or less high metallic contents in the stream are originated from coal mine and urban area.
A molel study was conducted to determine the optimal sample size for the analysis of the aquatic insect community in a stream reach of the Pangtae Creek, Kangwon-do in October 1995 and may 1996. The results showed that the required minimum sample size varied and depended on the purposes of the community analysis. Acoording to the Species: Area Curve method, at least 16 Surber samplings ($30{\times}30cm$) were required in a stream reach in each spring and fall survey. The species diversity index did not vary significantly as the sample size increased. Based on the coefficient of variation analysis, the minimum sample sizes of 10 were required in order to compare seasonal differences of the community in the study area. Considering the static community structure of aquatic insects, including both species numbers and individual numbers of aquatic insects, 11 and 7 samplings were optimal sizes for the fall and spring survey, respectively. We concluded that 12 Surber samplings from 3 riffle-pool sequences (4 samplings at each riffle-pool sequence) would be required in a stream reach (length 1 km) to obtain reliable as well as cost efficient data. Our model showed that the optimal sample size should be determined by interactions between minimum sample size, the degree of data reliability, and cost efficiency.

When a fuel was injected with opening the intake valve of a port fuel injection engine, the spray atomization and flow characteristics in the intake port have a strong influence on the mixture formation of a combustion chamber. Thus , this study was to clarify the spray flow characteristics of the air-assist gasoline spray with fine dropkets across the suction air stream in model intake port. For the simulated opening intake valve in port, suction air stream was varied to 10m/s ∼30m/s. And fuel pressur ewas fixed to 300kPa, but air assist pressure was varied to 0∼25kPa for a vairable spray conditions. Spray flow trajectory was investigated by means of laser sheet visualization and the measurements of droplet sizes and velocities were made by PDPA system. Measured droplets within the spray flow field were subdivided into five size groups and then, the flow characteristics of droplet size groups were investigated to the spray across a suction air stream.
Recently, GIS(Geographic Information System) is used to extract various hydrological factors from DEM(Digital Elevation Model) in river basin. Therefore, this study aims at the determination of river fractal dimension using DEM. In this paper, the main-stream length in river basin was grid-analyzed for each scale(1/5,000, 1/25,000, 1/50,000) and each cell size(5m$\times$5m, l0m$\times$l0m, 20m$\times$20m, 30m$\times$30m, 40m$\times$40m, 50m$\times$50m, 60m$\times$60m, 70m$\times$70m, 80m$\times$80m, 90m$\times$90m, 100m$\times$l00m, 120m$\times$120m, 150m$\times$150m) using GIS. Also, fractal dimension was derived by analyzing correlation among main-stream lengths, scale, and cell size which were calculated here. The result of calculating fractal dimension for each cell size shows that the fractal dimension on the main-stream length is 1.028.
The purpose of this study was, as a preliminary step for understanding the whole aspects of the impacts of a weir on the ecosystems in upper and lower streams, to find out the impacts of the weirs with and without a fish-way. A survey on the aquatic ecosystem of upper and lower streams of weirs in Ham-an Stream was carried out from June to October, 2006. Results of the investigation showed that some meaningful effects on the ecosystems had occurred by the weirs. The fish fauna in upper stream of the weir with a fish-way appeared to include 3 families, 8 species, and 184 individuals, while that in the lower stream of the weir appeared to include 5 families, 14 species, and 664 individuals. The fish fauna in the upper stream of the weir without a fish-way appeared to include 3 families, 9 species, 107 individuals, while that in the lower stream of the weir appeared to include 9 families, 19 species, 520 individuals, disclosing that, no matter with or without a fish-way, fish fauna species diversity and size of population were more abundant and bigger in the lower stream than in the upper stream, but that difference of fish fauna species diversities between upper and lower streams of the weirs appeared to be bigger for the weir with a fish-way than for the weir without a fish-way. Benthos species diversity and size of population were found to be more abundant and bigger in lower stream than in upper stream, and in wet season than in dry season.
The purpose of this study is to identify the type and characteristics of the domestic natural streams in order to establish a basis for stream restoration and evaluation. To this end, 95 domestic natural stream areas, which have various natural environments, were selected except for the province of island and then the characteristics of natural environment, hydromorpholoy, plant and vegetation were investigated and analyzed in each stream area. As a result, 95 stream areas were classified into total 24 types according to 3 criteria such as stream size (4 types), altitude (3 types), bed material (5 types). Depending on altitude class that is the environmental factor showing the highest correlation with each stream types, the emergence of vegetation and plant, 24 stream types were reclassified into 3 types such as lowland (altitude less than 200m), mountain (altitude from 200m to 500m), highland (altitude more than 500m), and hydromorpholoy, plant and vegetation characteristics of each stream type were compared. First, when compared to the mountain and highland streams, the typical features of lowland streams were as follows: Stream size was large but bed material size was small and there were many valley forms where flood plane were developed well. In addition, the more large stream size was, the more cross-section width variability, bars and sinuosity were in good conditions. In lowland stream, representative vegetation community was Salix koreensis community. On the other hand, when compared to the lowland streams, the typical features of mountain and highland streams were as follows: Stream size was small but bed material was coarse-grained and its size was large. Mountain and highland streams valley form where flood plane was not developed well was narrow, and sinuosity and bars development were weak. Representative vegetation communities of mountain streams were Quercus serrata -, Quercus variabilis -, Styrax japonica community and representative vegetation communities of highland streams were Pinus densiflora -, Quercus mongolica -, Fraxinus rhynchophylla community.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between physical stream characteristics and bed materials in natural rivers. Accordingly, four natural rivers were selected reference streams, they were Nam river, Sumjin River, Naesung River and Han River. Grain size distributions of bed materials were gravels, cobbles and boulders in Han river and Nam river, were sand, gravels, cobbles and boulders in Sumjin river and were sand in Naesung river. Four reference streams were divided into each two reference reaches (straight and bend) by plan and profile characteristics of naturally meandering stream. Therefore various reference reaches were chosen in the aspect of physical stream characteristics and grain size distributions. The results investigated and analyzed are as follows. The streams that grain sizes distributions of river bed materials were coarse were stable because they had variety of bed slope without sediment deposition, and then the riffles frequency and the physical characteristics were various. Also, velocitydepth regime were various in four kinds, and the response parts for water level change were small, so that channel flow status were stable and excellent condition. On the other hand, sand river that grain sizes distributions of river bed materials were fine had not the variety of parameters as velocity-depth regimes, sediment deposition, channel flow status and riffles frequency, so that the physical stream characteristics were not various.
