Strain interaction of steel stirrup and EB-FRP web strip in shear-strengthened semi-deep concrete beams

  • Conventional reinforced concrete design codes assume ideal strain evolution in semi-deep beams with externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (EB-FRP) web strips. However, there is a strain interaction between internal stirrups and web strips, leading to a notable difference between code-based and experimental shear strengths. Current study provides an experiment-verified detailed numerical framework to assess the potential strain interaction under quasi-static monotonic load. Based on the observations, steel stirrups are effective only for low EB-FRP amounts and the over-strengthening of semi-deep beams prevents the stirrups from yielding, reducing its shear strength contribution. A notable difference is detected between the code-based and the study-based EB-FRP strain values, which is a function of the normalized FRP stress parameter. Semi-analytical relations are proposed to estimate the effective strain and stress of the components considering the potential strain interaction. For the sake of simplification, a linearized correction factor is proposed for the EB-FRP web strip strain, assuming its restraining effect as constant for all steel stirrup amounts.

  • Industrial strain improvement is concerned with developing or modifying microorganisms used in production of commercially important fermentation products. The aim is to reduce the production cost by improving productivity of a strain and manipulating specific characteristics such as the ability to utilize cheaper raw materials or resist bacteriophages. The traditional empirical approach to strain improvement is mutation combined with selection and breeding techniques. It is still used by us to improve the productivity of organisms in amino acids, organic acids and enzymes production. The breeding of high L-lysine-producing strain Au112 is one of the outstanding examples of this approach. It is a homoserine auxotroph with AEC, TA double metabolic analogue resistant markers. The yield reaches 100 g/l. Besides, the citric acid-producing organism Aspergillus niger, Co827, its productivity reaches the advanced level in the world, is also the result of a series mutations especially with $^60Co{\gamma}$-radiation. The thermostable .alpha.-amylase producing strain A 4041 is the third example. By combining physical and chemical mutations, the strain A 4041 becomes an asporogenous, catabolite derepressed mutant with rifamycin resistant and methionine, arginine auxotroph markers. The .alpha.-amylase activity reaches 200 units/ml. The fourth successful example of mutation in strain improvement is the glucoamylase-producing strain Aspergillus niger SP56, its enzyme activity is 20,000 units/ml, 4 times of that of the parental strain UV-11. Recently, recombinant DNA approach provides a worthwhile alternative strategy to industrial strain improvement. This technique had been used by us to increase the thermostable .alpha.-amylase production and on some genetic researches.

응력이력과 시간이력에 따른 과압밀점토의 응력-변형-변형률 속도 (Stress-Strain-Strain Rate of Overconsolidated Clay Dependent on Stress and Time History)

  • 과압밀점토의 응력-변형 거동에 중요한 영향을 미치는 변형률 속도에 관하여 다루었다. 본 연구에서는 응력경로 회전각, 과압밀비 그리고 접근길이를 포함한 응력이력과 재하속도 이력 및 재하속도를 포함한 시간이력을 변화시켜 압밀-배수 응력경로 삼축 실험을 수행하였다. 실험 결과 모든 영향인자에 대하여 시간이 증가할수록 변형률 속도 역시 증가하였다. 또한, 회전각의 정의에 따라 상이한 변형률 속도의 값을 보였고, 과압밀비와 재하속도가 증가할수록 변형률 속도 역시 증가하였다. 응력이력에서는 응력-변형 거동과 변형률 속도간의 상관성이 존재하였지만 시간이력에서는 응력-변형-변형률 속도의 상관성을 보이지 않았다.

Amoeba proteus xD Strain의 변이주 특이성 단백질의 운영 (The Fate of Strain-Specific Protein in xD Strain of Amoeba proteus)

  • 이차원 전긱영동법에 의하여 A. proteus의 tD strain과 tD strain이 박테리아와 공생에 의해 유도된 xD strain의 단백질 양성을 비교하였다. Silver stain에 의해 비교 가능한 200여개의 주요 단백질 가운데 tD strain에서 분자량 45,000, 동전점 5.9의 특이성 단백질이, xD strain의 세포액과 공생낭에서는 분자량 29,000, 동전점 5.5의 공생 특이성 단백질이 탐지되었다. 공생 특이성 단백질은 아메바 고은 배양 및 실험 공생 아메바를 이용한 실험 결과 박테리아와 직접 연관 되어 있었다. 탐지된 두 특이성 단백질에 대하여 종전의 세포 핵 이식 및 배양 실험을 통해서 얻어진 결과에 비추어 이들 단백질 상호 연관 및 세포내의 기능에 관하여 논의하였다.

웨어러블 텍스타일 스트레인 센서 리뷰 (Wearable Textile Strain Sensors)

  • This paper provides a review of wearable textile strain sensors that can measure the deformation of the body surface according to the movements of the wearer. In previous studies, the requirements of textile strain sensors, materials and fabrication methods, as well as the principle of the strain sensing according to sensor structures were understood; furthermore, the factors that affect the sensing performance were critically reviewed and application studies were examined. Textile strain sensors should be able to show piezoresistive effects with consistent resistance-extension in response to the extensional deformations that are repeated when they are worn. Textile strain sensors with piezoresistivity are typically made using conductive yarn knit structures or carbon-based fillers or conducting polymer filler composite materials. For the accuracy and reliability of textile strain sensors, fabrication technologies that would minimize deformation hysteresis should be developed and processes to complement and analyze sensing results based on accurate understanding of the sensors' resistance-strain behavior are necessary. Since light-weighted, flexible, and highly elastic textile strain sensors can be worn by users without any inconvenience so that to enable the users to continuously collect data related to body movements, textile strain sensors are expected to become the core of human interface technologies with a wide range of applications in diverse areas.

  • This paper is concerned with the thermo-mechanical behavior and temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity of steel sheet for an auto-body. In order to Identify the temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity of SPRC35R and SPRC45E, uniaxial tension tests are performed with the variation of the strain rates from 0.001/sec to 200/sec, and the variation of environmental temperatures from $-40^{\circ}C\;to\;200^{\circ}C$. The thermo-mechanical response at the quasi-static state is obtained with the static tensile test and at the intermediate strain rate is from the high speed tensile test. The experimental results show that the strain rate sensitivity increases at low temperature and it decreases at high temperature. It means that as the strain rate getting increasing, the variation of flow stress is more sensitive on the temperature. The results also indicates that the material properties of SPRC35R is more depend on the changes of strain rates and temperature than those of SPRC45E.

  • This paper is concerned with the thermo-mechanical behavior including temperature dependent strain-rate sensitivity of steel sheet for an auto-body. In order to identify the temperature dependent strain-rate sensitivity of SPRC35R and SPRC45E, uniaxial tension tests are performed with the variation of the strain-rates from 0.001 /sec to 200 /sec at environmental temperatures varied from $-40^{\circ}C\;to\;200^{\circ}C$. The thermo-mechanical response at the quasi-static state is obtained with the static tensile test and at the intermediate strain-rate is from the high speed tensile test. Experimental results show that the strain-rate sensitivity increases at low temperature. It represents that as the strain-rate increases, the variation of flow stress becomes sensitive on the temperature.   • This paper is concerned with the empirical flow stress constitutive equation of steel sheets for an auto-body with the variation of temperature and strain rate. In order to represent the strain rate and temperature dependent behavior of the flow stress at the intermediate strain rates accurately, an empirical hardening equation is suggested by modifying the well-known Khan-Huang-Liang model. The temperature and strain rate dependent sensitivity of the flow stress at the intermediate strain rate is considered in the hardening equation by coupling the strain, the strain rate and the temperature. The hardening equation suggested gives good correlation with experimental results at various intermediate strain rates and temperatures. In order to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the suggested model quantitatively, the standard deviation of the fitted result from the experimental one is compared with those of the other two well-known empirical constitutive models such as the Johnson-Cook and the Khan-Huang-Liang models. The comparison demonstrates that the suggested model gives relatively well description of experimental results at various strain rates and temperatures.

  • FBG sensor의 다중 측정성을 이용하여 모르타르 시편의 열 변형률과 온도 변화를 동시에 측정하였다. 또한, 광섬유 격자 센서를 이용하여, 열 변화에 따른 모르타르 시편의 내부 온도 구배를 측정하였다. 열 변형률을 기존 strain gauge와 함께 측정하였을 때, strain gauge는 섭씨 60도 이상의 온도에서 오차를 보이는 반면, FBG 센서는 안정된 측정값을 나타냈다. FBG 온도 sensor로 측정한 온도 변화량은 thermocouple로 측정한 값과 비교하였으며, 선형적인 대응관계를 보였다.

Eighteen unreported radiation-resistant bacterial species isolated from Korea in 2018

  • In 2018, as a subset study to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, a total of 18 unreported bacterial strains were discovered. From the high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>98.8%) and formation of a robust phylogenetic clade, it was determined that each strain belonged an independent and predefined bacterial species. There were no official report that these 18 species were previously described in Korea; therefore, one strain of Williamsia, one strain of Rhodococcus, three strains of Microbacterium, three strains of Agromyces, one strain of Arthrobacter, one strain of Paeniglutamicibacter, one strain of Pseudarthrobacter, one strain of Nocardioides, one strain of Fibrella, one strain of Hymenobacter, one strain of Deinococcus, two strains of Fictibacillus, and one strain of Paenibacillus are described as unreported bacterial species in Korea. Gram reaction, basic biochemical characteristics, and colony and cell morphologies are described in the species description section.
