  • In this study, we evaluated the anti-cancer effect of extracts of leaves (ST-L) and branches (ST-B) from Sageretia theezans in human colorectal cancer cells. ST-L and ST-B significantly inhibited the proliferation of human colorectal cancer cells, SW480. ST-L and ST-B decreased cyclin D1 protein level through the induction of cyclin D1 proteasomal degradation via $GSK3{\beta}$-dependent threonine-286 phosphorylation of cyclin D1. In addition, ST-L and ST-B increased HO-1 protein through p38, ROS and $GSK3{\beta}$-dependent Nrf2 activation. These findings suggest that ST-L and ST-B may have great potential for the development of anti-cancer drug to treat human colorectal cancer.

  • Stent thrombosis after successful drug-eluting stent(DES) implantation has been reported in around 1% of patients in clinical trials. However, the increased risk of ST associated with DES remains a matter of concern. From 1 June 2003 to 30 June 2013, we investigated clinical characteristics, in-hospital outcomes in 10,273 patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention in the Heart Center of CNUH. Overall incidence of ST was 1.30% (134 patients). The incidence of ST according to the stent generations and the timing of ST (n=total, early vs. late vs. very late) were 0.79% (n=81, 26 vs. 12 vs. 43) in first-generation, 0.38% (n=39, 21 vs. 9 vs. 9) in second-generation and 0.14% (n=14, 8 vs 3 vs. 3) in third-generation, (p=0.70). The mortality from ST was significantly higher in early ST group compared to the late and very late ST groups (18.2% vs. 8.3% vs. 3.6%, p=0.042). Overall incidence of ST after DES implantation was 1.30% (134 patients). The in-hospital mortality was significantly higher in early ST group compared to the late and very late ST groups.

  • This study was carried out to get the basic data for safflower cultivation according to sowing date by growth analysis for 2 years form 2003 to 2004 at Institute of natural product in Uiseong, G.B.A.R.E.S.. Safflower(Cheongsoo cultivar) was seeded at March 1st, April 1st, May 1st, and July 1st in field. The necessary date for germination was 24 days, when safflower was seeded at March 1st, but it was 8 days which sowed at April 1st and when the seed was sowed at high temperature period, the necessary date for germination was getting short. The necessary date for flowering was the same trend as germination; it took 104 days at March 1st, 79 days at April 1st, 65 days at May 1st, and 58 days at July 1st sowing treatment. The safflower growth was the most vigor when it was sowed at March 1st. T/R(Top/Root) ratio was gently increased during growing season, but when the seed was sowed at July 1 st, it was low compare to sowing at March 1st and April 1st. RGR(Relative growth rate) was the highest during shoot growth stage, but it was rapidly decreased after flowering. CGR(Crop growth rate) was increased at branching stage, and the increasing velocity was slightly decreased just before flowering, and it was increased again at flowering and at this stage, CGR was the highest, and then it did not increased. NAR(Net assimilation rate) was the highest at shoot growth stage during growing season, and was the highest which was sowed at March 1st.

  • In order to estimate the characteristics of the growth and composition of phytoplankton according to the available nutrients, we added nitrate (0, 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, $100{\mu}M$) and phosphate (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, $10{\mu}M$) to field samples in a eutrophic site (St. 1) and an oligotrophic site (St. 22) in 2010 as well as a eutrophic site (St. 1, 5), a mesotrophic site (St. 19), and an oligotrophic site (St. 22) in 2011 at Jinhae Bay, Korea. The phytoplankton growth in the areas with additional nitrates and phosphates on St. 1 were significantly different from the control (One-way ANOVA:P<0.01). The dominant species at St. 1 in 2010 were Heterocapsa triquetra and Pseudo-nitzchia spp., to which nitrate and phosphate were added, respectively. The dominant species at St. 22 in 2010 differed between treatment conditions as follows: nitrate treatment Chaetoceros spp. (${\leq}10{\mu}M$), Thalassiosira spp. ($20{\mu}M$), and Pseudo-nitzchia spp.(${\geq}50{\mu}M$) for nitrate treatment; Cylindrotheca spp. ($2{\mu}M$) and Pseudo-nitzchia spp. ($5{\mu}M$) for phosphate treatment. Phytoplankton growth in 2011 according to the added nutrient were significantly different with treatment concentrations (One-way ANOVA: P<0.01). Moreover, the beginning of exponential growth in phytoplanktons was different between the eutro-mesotrophic sites (St. 1, 5, and 19) and the oligotrophic sites (St. 22) on day 2 and day 6 respectively. This implies that phytoplankton growth in the low nutrient condition may be retarded. The dominant species at St. 1 were Eucampia spp. and Chaetoceros spp. in the low nutrient treatment compared to Skeletonema spp., and Thalassiosira spp in the high nutrient treatment. The dominant species at St. 5 and St. 19 were mostly Skeletonema spp. and Chaetoceros spp. However, the dominant species at St. 22 was Thalassiosira spp.. The results of this study showed that phytoplankton growth and composition were different in areas with different nutrient characteristics resulting from the additional nutrients. Therefore, the nutrients additional algal assay could be indirectly explained why the biomass and composition of phytoplankton in Jinhae Bay has shown spatial differences.

  • In this study, we evaluated the anti-inflammatory effect of extracts of leaves (ST-L) and branches (ST-B) from Sageretia theezans in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. ST-L and ST-B significantly inhibited the production of the pro-inflammatory mediators such as NO, iNOS, COX-2, $IL-1{\beta}$ and IL-6 in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. ST-L and ST-B blocked LPS-induced degradation of $I{\kappa}B-{\alpha}$ and nuclear accumulation of p65, which resulted to the inhibition of $NF-{\kappa}B$ activation in RAW264.7 cells. ST-L and ST-B also attenuated the phosphorylation of ERK1/2, p38 and JNK in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. In addition, ST-L and ST-B increased HO-1 expression in RAW264.7 cells, and the inhibition of HO-1 by ZnPP reduced the inhibitory effect of ST-L and ST-B against LPS-induced NO production in RAW264.7 cells. Inhibition of p38 activation and ROS elimination attenuated HO-1 expression by ST-L and ST-B, and ROS elimination inhibited p38 activation induced by ST-L and ST-B. ST-L and ST-B dramatically induced nuclear accumulation of Nrf2, but this was significantly reversed by the inhibition of p38 activation and ROS elimination. Collectively, our results suggest that ST-L and ST-B exerts potential anti-inflammatory activity by suppressing $NF-{\kappa}B$ and MAPK signaling activation, and activating HO-1 expression through the nuclear accumulation of Nrf2 via ROS-dependent p38 activation. These findings suggest that ST-L and ST-B may have great potential for the development of anti-inflammatory drug to treat acute and chronic inflammatory disorders.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to observe the effects of acupuncture at right Nae-jong$(ST_{44})$ on the temperature and humidity changes of Sa-baek$(ST_2)$ area according to the meridian and Keo-ja(巨刺) of oriental medicine's theory. Methods : A clinical study was done on 13 females who didn't have my disease. We used LT-8B to observe the effects of acupuncture at right Nae-jong$(ST_{44})$ on the temperature and humidity changes of Sa-baek$(ST_2)$ area. Skin temperature and humidity on right and left Sa-baek$(ST_2)$ were measured by LT-8B at 1 minute before acupuncture stimulation, 1 minute and 2 minutes after acupuncture stimulation of right Nae-jong$(ST_{44})$. Results : 1. After inserting the needle at the right Nae-jong$(ST_{44})$ point, the temperature at the left Sa-baek$(ST_2)$ area rised from $31.60{\pm}1.13^{\circ}C$ 1 minute before to $32.24{\pm}1.19^{\circ}C$ 1 minute after the insertion and to $32.34{\pm}1.23^{\circ}C$ 2 minutes after insertion, what means an elevation by (P<0.05) between the temperature before and 2 minutes after the insertion and still an elevation by (P<0.01) between 1 minute and 2 minutes after insertion. The humidity at the same area decreased by (P<0.01) between 1 minute and 2 minutes after insertion. 2.After stimulating the right Nae-jong$(ST_{44})$ point the temperature change at the right Sa-baek$(ST_2)$ area between before and after the insertion was unremarkable, however the temperature rised by (P<0.05) between 1 minute and 2 minutes after insertion and the humidity decreased by (P<0.05) between 1 minute and 2 minutes after stimulation. 3. Comparing the temperature change between 1 minute and 2 minutes after stimulating the right Nae-jong$(ST_{44})$ point, we could find a significant difference by (P<0.05) at both Sa-baek$(ST_2)$ areas. Concerning the humidity change, there were some average differences but too small for statistic significance.
