  • In order to investigate characteristics of surface fatigue crack propagation from a pit shaped surface defect which frequently exists around welded joints, SS400 steel with thickness of 12mm, which has been generally used for structure members, was welded with submerged-arc butt type and machined for both surface. An initial surface defect of pit shape with the aspect ratio of 2 was made on the specimen. The initial defect was located at 5 different zones over the weldment : weld metal zone, boundary between weld metal and HAZ, HAZ, boundary between HAZ and base metal. Characteristics of surface fatigue crack propagation from the defect on each region under the same loading condition were investigated and compared.

  • Some mechanical properties of the submerged arc-welded(SAW) zone between different kinds of metal (SS400+SB450) are investigated and compared with that between same kinds of metal (SS400+SS400 and SB450+SB450). The analysis of the chemical components and observation of the micro-structure by SEM of the weld zone are also carried out. And the effect of the stress relief annealing is examined by comparing tensile strength, elongation, toughness add hardness of SAW specimens before and after the heat treatment.

  • Hot-rolled steel plates of SPHC and SS400 were oxidized at 600, 750 and $900^{\circ}C$ for 2hr in air. With an increase in oxidation temperature, their oxidation rates increased, being accompanied with formation of pores and cracks in the thickened oxide scales that were non-adherent. The SPHC steels that were manufactured by either the arc furnace or the blast furnace displayed similar oxidation rates, indicating that their oxidation rates were insensitive to the manufacturing processes. The medium-carbon SS400 steel displayed a little faster oxidation rates than the low-carbon SS400 steel, indicating that the carbon content did not significantly influence the oxidation rates.

  • In this study, to confirm the effect of alloying elements on the phase transformation and conditions of the friction stir process, we processed two materials, SS400 and SM45C steels, by a friction stir process (FSP) under various conditions. We analyzed the mechanical properties and microstructure of the friction stir processed zone of SS400 and SM45C steels processed under 400RPM - 100mm/min conditions. We detected no macro (tunnel defect) or micro (void, micro crack) defects in the specimens. The grain refinement in the specimens occurred by dynamic recrystallization and stirring. The microstructure at the friction stir processed zone of the SS400 specimen consisted of an ${\alpha}$-phase. On the other hand, the microstructure at the friction stir processed zone of the SM45 specimen consisted of an ${\alpha}$-phase, $Fe_3C$ and martensite due to a high cooling rate and high carbon content. Furthermore, the hardness and impact absorption energy of the friction stir processed zone were higher than those of base metals. The hardness and impact absorption energy of FSPed SM45C were higher than that of FSPed SS400. Our results confirmed the effect of alloying elements on the phase transformation and mechanical properties of the friction stir processed zone.

  • The present paper describes an experimental study on the corrosive behaviour of Rolling stock structures. It is important to predict corrosive behaviour of rolling stock structures for safe service and to know relation between corrosion and fatigue life. This paper practiced electrochemical corrosion test of SS400 and SM490A. This study will examine the corrosive properties and differences of SS400 and SM490A from measuring corrosion potential and corrosion current density.

  • Building destruction can be occurred by decreasing of structural stability and deformation according to fire. Especially, a structural behavior of beam can be shown a slightly difference by beam types. In this paper, an evaluation of the structural stability of beam made of ordinary structural steel designed by fixed and simple boundary condition was done by an analytic method using mechanical properties of SS 400 and an heat transfer theory.
