A comparison was made between the chlorophyll a and suspended solid (SS) retrievals from OSMI and SeaWiFS sensor to chlorophyll a and SS values determined with the standard method during the NFRDI's research cruises. The percentage of organic and inorganic materials from the SS was calculated to study the contribution of turbid water in the northern part of the East China Sea. The open sea waters in the Kuroshio regions of the East China Sea showed relatively higher concentration of volatile SS. However, towards the northwestern part of the East China Sea, the situation became much more optically different with the non-volatile SS from the Yangtze river and the sea bottom sources in the sea in winter and spring seasons. Furthermore, in order to indirectly detect low salinity water with high turbidity, which related to the Yangtze river using remote sensed data from the satellites, a comparison between the results of the band ratio(nLw 490nm/nLw 555nm) of SeaWiFS (OSMI) and the distribution of low salinity around the Jeju Island was presented.
The purpose of this study is to reprocess Waste-LCD(Liquid Crystal Display), to widely increase specific surface-area by foaming agent in the process of reprocessing and to use as a substrate of water treatment which is increased the ability of biological treatment, as well as to control non-point source pollutants produced by surface run off during rainfall with using this substrate, and to improve water quality of public watershed as developing substrate for water treatment to be able to purify second treated water which is exhausted at the wastewater treatment plant. The average removal efficiency of Waste-LCD that using the foaming technology was SS 71.2%, BOD 55.7%, COD 58.4%, T-N 29.5% and T-P was 50.3%. Almost Media, early stage showed low removal efficiency of SS and BOD. However, it became high when the microorganism adhered the Media. The variation of SS removal efficiency was high by inflow concentration of SS. The reason for the Media 4 showed high SS removal efficiency is that it has wide specific surface-area, and also it has a pore. All in all, it shows floating matter treatment ability not only inside but it also works outside of the substrate.

Absorption coefficient per mass unit of particles, specific absorption coefficient, is one of main parameters in developing algorithms for ocean color remote sensing. Specific absorption coefficient of chlorophyll (a$^*_{ph}$) and suspended sediment (SS) were analyzed by "wet filter technique" and "Kishino method" for data sets observed in the Yellow and Mediterranean Seas. A new data-recovering method for the filter technique was also developed using spectrum slopes. This method recovered the baseline of spectrum that was often missed in the Kishino method. High a$^*_{ph}$($\lambda$) values in the oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea and low values in the Yellow Sea were observed, spanning over the range of 0.02 to 0.12 $m^2$/mg, at the chlorophyll maximum absorption wavelength 440nm. The empirical relationship between a$^*_{ph}$ and chlorophyll concentration was found to fit a power function, which was slightly different from that proposed by Bricaud et ai. (1995). Absorption specific coefficients for suspended sediment (a$^*_{SS}$) didn't show any relationship with concentrations of suspended sediment. However, the average value of a$^*_{SS}$ at 440nm was close to the specific absorption coefficient of soil (loess) measured by Ahn (1990). The more-pronounced variability of a$^*_{SS}$ than a$^*_{ph}$ perhaps can explain more wide range of size-distribution for SS, which were determined by their specific gravity and agitation of water mass in the sea surface.
Oriental melon has been increased in production amount, but its processed food was not made in spite of the fact that shelf-life of the fresh fruit is short. This study was carried out to develop a dried product with no use sulfur treatment. Fresh melons were peeled, cut into 6 pieces, and soaked to the following pretreatments soaking in sugar syrup(SS), sodium chloride(SC), ascorbic acid(AA) and sodium polyphosphate(SP). After preatreatments the melon pieces were dried by hot air drying at 5$0^{\circ}C$ for 9 and 12 hours, and the dried melons were air blown at $25^{\circ}C$ for 1 day. The dried samples were evaluated for moisture content, texture, rotor, and sensory quality. The moisture content of dried melons soaked in SS and SC were lower than those that were soaked in AA and SP after hot air drying. The melons dried for 12 hours were high in hardness, gumminess, chewness and adhesiveness and excellent in sensory evaluation compared to 9 hours. The "L" value of SS was higher and the "a" value was lower in Hunter color. And SS treatment inhibited browning of the dried melon and improved sensory characteristics in color, flavor, texture and taste. Sucrose concentration had no significant effect on color, hardness and sensory score in banal product. The combination of SS with SP represented a highly effective antibrowning treatment for the dried melon and the product was kept in good color for 3 months at room temperature.at room temperature.
This study was conducted to investigate chemical properties, quality stability and utilization of approved sardine surimi(ASS) which is developed our laboratory. The product yield of the ASS was about 3 times higher than that of usual sardine surimi(SS). The proper addition concentration of sodium bicarbonate was 0.1% for the neutralization of the ASS. The content of salt soluble protein nitrogen in the ASS was about the half of that in the SS, while the content of water soluble protein nitrogen was 2.4 times higher in ASS. The total amount of free amino acids in the ASS was about 11 times higher than that of the SS. Predominant free amino acids in the ASS were histidine, taurine, glutamic acid and alanine, and those four amino acids occupied 94% of total amount of free amino acids. During cold storage at 21oC for 6 months, the quality of ASS was more stable than that of SS in judging from changes of water soluble and salt soluble protein nitrogen, AV and POV. Quality of fish burger, fish sausage and fried fish paste processed in accordance with commercial processing preparation using the ASS or SS exclusively and mixtures which other white meat fish surimi(alaska pollack, hair tail and sole) were proportionallly added to each of two types of sardine meat were evaluated. In case of fish burger, the product processed from the ASS only were superior.
A comparison was made between the chlorophyll $\alpha$ and suspended solid (SS) retrievals from OSMI and SeaWiFS sensor to chlorophyll $\alpha$ and SS values determined with the standard method during the NFRDI's research cruises. Furthermore, in order to indirectly detect low salinity water with high turbidity, which related to the Yangtze river using remote sensed data from the satellites, a comparison between the results of the band ratio(nLw 490nm/nLw 555nm) of SeaWiFS(OSMI) and the distribution of low salinity around the Jeju Island was presented.
To investigate the effect of seaweed (SW) addition on anaerobic co-digestion of food waste (FW) and sewage sludge (SS), batch experiments were conducted at various substrate concentrations (2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0 g volatile solids (VS)/L) and mixing ratios ((FW or SS):SW = 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100 on a VS basis). The effect of SW addition on FW digestion was negligible at low substrate concentration, while it was substantial at high substrate concentrations by balancing the rate of acidogenesis and methanogenesis. At 10 g VS/L, $CH_4$ production yield was increased from 103 to $350mL\;CH_4/g$ VS by SW addition (FW:SW = 75:25). On the other hand, SW addition to SS enhanced the digestion performance at all substrate concentrations, by providing easily biodegradable organics, which promoted the hydrolysis of SS. $k_{hyd}$ (hydrolysis constant) value was increased from 0.19 to $0.28d^{-1}$ by SW addition. The calculation showed that the synergistic $CH_4$ production increment by co-digesting with SW accounted for up to 24% and 20% of total amount of $CH_4$ production in digesting FW and SS, respectively.
A Sustainable Structured wetland Biotop (SSB) system was constructed on the floodplain of Kyungan stream in December, 2006. It purifies polluted water of Keumeo stream which flows into the stream. Water were sampled once a month at inlet and outlet from December, 2007 to December, 2008. $BOD_5$, SS, T-N and T-P were analyzed. Plant and fish species of the system were monitored twice during the period. Average influent and effluent BOD5 concentration was 6.2 and 2.2 mg/L, respectively and BOD5 removal was 50.8%. SS concentration of influent and effluent was averaged 10.1mg/L and 1.5mg/L, respectively and SS abatement amounted to 77.0%. Average influent and effluent T-N concentration was 4.9mg/L and 2.9 mg/L, respectively and T-N retention was 50.8%. T-P concentration of influent and effluent was averaged 0.386mg/L and 0.107mg/L, respectively and T-P removal amounted to 77.0%. Twenty two plant species were naturally introduced into the system, however, they didn't make up a significant portion of the plant populations compared with the planted species. Dominant plant species were in the following order; Phragmites communis > Typha latifolia > Iris pseudoacorus > Persicaria thunbergii. Five families and 15 species of fish were observed in the system including Chinese minnow (Moroco oxycephalus) which inhabits in clean water. Six more fish species were monitored in the system compared with ones living in Kyungan stream. Amphibia and reptiles accounted for 11 species of 4 orders and 7 families including Korean Salamander (Hynobius leechi) which also lives in cleanwater.
A Sustainable Structured wetland Biotop (SSB) system was planned, designed, and finally constructed, and maintained in the An-teo Reservoir ecological park, which is the habitat of the endangered Gold-spotted Pond Frog. The system purifies polluted water of An-teo Reservoir which flows from up to bottom within the system. Water was sampled once a month at the inlet and at the outlet from December, 2009 to August, 2010. BOD5, SS, T-N and T-P were analyzed. Average influent and effluent BOD5 concentration was 2.9 and 1.0 mg/L, respectively, and BOD5 removal was 67%. SS concentration of influent and effluent averaged 18.1 mg/L and 2.5 mg/L, respectively, and SS abatement amounted to 86%. Average influent and effluent T-N concentration was 0.426 mg/L and 0.147 mg/L, respectively, and T-N retention was 66%. T-P concentration of influent and effluent averaged 0.071 mg/L and 0.022 mg/L, respectively, and T-P removal amounted to 68%. Plant and frog species of the system were monitored during the period. Amphibia and reptiles provided 7 species and 4 families including the Endangered Gold-Spotted Pond Frog (Rana chosenica ) which also lives in the system. Twenty-six plant species were naturally introduced into the system, however, they didn't make up a significant portion of the plant populations compared with the planted species. The endangered plants, Bladderwort (Utricularia vulgaris var. japonica ) and Euryale ferox were observed in An-teo Reservoir as well as in the system.
In this study, ozone was adopted for the reduction and stabilization of waste sludge from the municipal sewage treatment plant. The waste sludge used in the experiments was primary sludge, excess sludge and a mixture of the two. The sludge cells and flocs were disrupted by ozonation resulting in the reduction of TSS and VSS concentrations. In the case of the primary sludge with a concentration of 20 gTS/L, the TSS and VSS concentrations were reduced 28%, 33% and the TCOD concentration was reduced 20% respectively. The consumption of ozone was $0.18gO_3/gSS$. In the case of the excess sludge with a concentration of 7.5 gTS/L, the TSS and VSS concentrations were reduced 37%, 41%, and the TCOD concentration was reduced 19% respectively. The consumption of ozone was $0.33gO_3/gSS$. In the case of the mixed sludge of 9.3 gTS/L, the TSS and VSS concentrations were reduced by 45%, 53%, and the TCOD was reduced 26% respectively. The desirable consumption of ozone was $0.27gO_3/gSS$. As ozonation proceeded, the level of SCOD increased due to the release of intracellular materials. However TCOD was reduced due to mineralization resulting from the transformation of organic materials to inorganic materials.
