  • In this paper, we describe a case study of the film 'Sector 7' which was produced by technologies applied fluid simulation. For the CG scenes in the movie which include highly detailed fluid motions, we used smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH) technique to express subtle movements of seawater from a crashed huge tank, and used hybrid simulation method of particles and levelsets to describe bursting water from a submarine's broken canopy. We also used detonation shock dynamics(DSD) technique for detailed flame simulations to produce a burning monster, the film"s main character. At this point, the divergence-free vortex particle method was applied to conserve the incompressible property of fluids. In addition, we used an upsampling method to achieve more efficient video production. Consequently, we could produce the high-quality visual effects by using the domestic technologies.

  • The paper involves the study on the elastic and elasto-plastic stress wave propagation in the 1-D and 2-D solid media. The Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics equations governing the elastic and elasto-plastic large deformation dynamic response of solid structures are presented. The proposed additional stress points are introduced in the formulation to mitigate the tensile instability inherent in the SPH approach. Both incremental rate approach and leap-frog algorithm for time integration are introduced and the new solution algorithm is developed and implemented. Two examples on stress wave propagation in aluminium bar and 2-D elasto-plastic steel plate are included. Results from the proposed SPH approach are compared with available analytical values and finite element solutions. The comparison illustrates that the stress wave propagation problems can be effectively solved by the proposed SPH method. The study shows that the SPH simulation is a reliable and robust tool and can be used with confidence to treat transient dynamics such as linear and non-linear transient stress wave propagation problems.

  • In this paper, we have implemented soil simulation using fluid simulation technology. A widely used NVIDIA FleX was used to represent the soil generated by excavation work. FleX is a particle-based physics simulation library that combines SPH (Smoothed-particle hydrodynamics) and Position Based Dynamics techniques. However, since the soil has not only fluid properties but also non-fluid properties, it is difficult to simulate with the functions provided by conventional FleX. In this study, we added a technique to simulate non-fluid behavior using existing Flex. This can lead to effective results improvement at low cost.

  • Nonlinear shoaling characteristics over surf zone are numerically investigated based on spatially averaged NavierStokes equation. We also test the validity of gradient model for turbulent stresses due to wave breaking using the data acquainted during SUPERTANK LABORATORY DATA COLLECTION PROJECT(Krauss et al., 1992). It turns out that the characteristics length scale of breaking induced current is not negligible, which firmly stands against ever popular gradient model, ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model, but favors Large Eddy Simulation with finer grid. Based on these observations, we model the residual stress of spatially averaged NavierStokes equation after Lagrangian Dynamic Smagorinsky(Meneveau et al., 1996). We numerically integrate newly proposed wave equations using SPH with Gaussian kernel function. Severely deformed water surface profile, free falling water particle, queuing splash after landing of water particle on the free surface and wave finger due to structured vortex on rear side of wave crest(Narayanaswamy and Dalrymple, 2002) are successfully duplicated in the numerical simulation of wave propagation over uniform slope beach, which so far have been regarded very difficult features to mimic in the computational fluid mechanics.

  • We have implemented the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) into the cosmological N-body simulation code. The pre-initial particle distribution is set to follow the glacial conditions and the initial temperature of hydro particles is calculated based on the adiabatic process in the expanding backgrounds. Typical adiabatic SPH equations are adopted and, additionally, non-adiabatic processes such as heating/cooling and supernova explosion are added. We study the effect of star formation criteria on the global star formation rate and compare it with the observations.

  • This paper proposes a novel acceleration method for particle based large scale fluid simulation. Traditional particle-based fluid simulation has been implemented by interacting with physical quantities of neighbor particles through the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics(SPH) technique[1]. SPH method has the characteristic that there is no visible change compared to the computation amount in a part where the particle movement is small, such as a calm surface or inter-fluid. This becomes more prominent as the number of particles increases. Previous work has attempted to reduce the amount of spare computation by adaptively dividing each part of the fluid. In this paper, we propose a technique to calculate the motion of the entire particles by using the physical quantities of the near sampled particles by sampling the particles inside the fluid at regular intervals and using them as reference points of the fluid motion. We propose a technique to adaptively generate a triangle map based on the position of the sampled particles in order to efficiently search for nearby particles, and we have been able to interpolate the physical quantities of particles using the barycentric coordinate system. The proposed acceleration technique does not perform any additional correction for two classes of fluid particles. Our technique shows a large improvement in speed as the number of particles increases. The proposed technique also does not interfere with the fine movement of the fluid surface particles.

  • Interaction between fluid and a rigid object is frequently observed in everyday life. However, it is difficult to simulate their interaction as the medium and the object have different representations. One of the challenging issues arises especially in handling deformation of the object visually as well as rendering haptic feedback. In this paper, we propose a real-time simulation technique for multimodal interaction between particle-based fluids and soluble solids. We have developed the dissolution behavior model of solids, which is discretized based on the idea of smoothed particle hydrodynamics, and the changes in physical properties accompanying dissolution is immediately reflected to the object. The user is allowed to intervene in the simulation environment anytime by manipulating the solid object, where both visual and haptic feedback are delivered to the user on the fly. For immersive visualization, we also adopt the screen space fluid rendering technique which can balance realism and performance.

  • Submersed rock-berm structures are frequently used for protection of underwater lifelines such as pipelines and power cables. During the service life, the rock-berm structure can experience several accidental loads such as anchor collision. The consequences can be severe with a certain level of frequency; hence, the structural responses should be carefully understood for implementing a proper structural health monitoring method. However, no study has been made to quantify the structural responses because it is hard to deal with the individual behavior of each rock. Therefore, this study presents a collision analysis of the submersed rock-berm structure using a finite element software package by facilitating the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The analysis results were compared with those obtained from the Lagrange method. Moreover, two types of anchors (stock anchor and stockless anchor), three collision points and two different drop velocities (terminal velocity of each anchor and 5 m/s) were selected to investigate the changes in the responses. Finally, the effect of these parameters (analysis method, anchor type, collision point and drop velocity) on the analysis results was studied. Accordingly, the effectiveness of the SPH method is verified, a safe rock-berm height (over 1 m) is proposed, and a gauge point (0.5 m above the seabed) is suggested for a structural health monitoring implementation.

  • The buoy of the wave energy converter moves by direct contact with the fluid. In order to design a buoy by using the numerical method, it is necessary to analyze not only the contact with the fluid but also the exact behavior of the fluid. In this paper, differences between weakly compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (WCSPH) and incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ISPH) are compared and analyzed for two-dimensional dam breaking simulation. ABAQUS, which is a commercial analysis program, is used for WCSPH analysis. A laboratory code is developed for ISPH analysis. The surface shape, the velocity, and the pressure pattern of the fluid are compared. The results of the laboratory code show the similar tendencies with those of ABAQUS, and there is a little difference in the pressure result.
